The Riddle of the Sands: A Record of Secret Service Recently Achieved【電子書籍】[ Erskine Childers ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

I HAVE read of men who, when forced by their calling to live for long periods in utter solitudeーsave for a few black facesーhave made it a rule to dress regularly for dinner in order to maintain their self-respect and prevent a relapse into barbarism. It was in some such spirit, with an added touch of self-consciousness, that, at seven o'clock in the evening of September 23 in a recent year, I was making my evening toilet in my chambers in Pall Mall. I thought the date and the place justified the parallel; to my advantage even; for the obscure Burmese administrator might well be a man of blunted sensibilities and coarse fibre, and at least he is alone with nature, while Iーwell, a young man of condition and fashion, who knows the right people, belongs to the right clubs, has a safe, possibly a brilliant, future in the Foreign Officeーmay be excused for a sense of complacent martyrdom, when, with his keen appreciation of the social calendar, he is doomed to the outer solitude of London in September. I say 'martyrdom', but in fact the case was infinitely worse. For to feel oneself a martyr, as everybody knows, is a pleasurable thing, and the true tragedy of my position was that I had passed that stage. I had enjoyed what sweets it had to offer in ever dwindling degree since the middle of August, when ties were still fresh and sympathy abundant. I had been conscious that I was missed at Morven Lodge party. Lady Ashleigh herself had said so in the kindest possible manner, when she wrote to acknowledge the letter in which I explained, with an effectively austere reserve of language, that circumstances compelled me to remain at my office. 'We know how busy you must be just now', she wrote, 'and I do hope you won't overwork; we shall all miss you very much.' Friend after friend 'got away' to sport and fresh air, with promises to write and chaffing condolences, and as each deserted the sinking ship, I took a grim delight in my misery, positively almost enjoying the first week or two after my world had been finally dissipated to the four bracing winds of heaven. I began to take a spurious interest in the remaining five millions, and wrote several clever letters in a vein of cheap satire, indirectly suggesting the pathos of my position, but indicating that I was broad-minded enough to find intellectual entertainment in the scenes, persons, and habits of London in the dead season. I even did rational things at the instigation of others. For, though I should have liked total isolation best, I, of course, found that there was a sediment of unfortunates like myself, who, unlike me, viewed the situation in a most prosaic light. There were river excursions, and so on, after office-hours; but I dislike the river at any time for its noisy vulgarity, and most of all at this season. So I dropped out of the fresh air brigade and declined Hーー's offer to share a riverside cottage and run up to town in the mornings. I did spend one or two week-ends with the Catesbys in Kent; but I was not inconsolable when they let their house and went abroad, for I found that such partial compensations did not suit me. Neither did the taste for satirical observation last. A passing thirst, which I dare say many have shared, for adventures of the fascinating kind described in the New Arabian Nights led me on a few evenings into some shady haunts in Soho and farther eastward; but was finally quenched one sultry Saturday night after an hour's immersion in the reeking atmosphere of a low music-hall in Ratcliffe Highway, where I sat next a portly female who suffered from the heat, and at frequent intervals refreshed herself and an infant from a bottle of tepid stout.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 640円

MI9 A History of the Secret Service for Escape and Evasion in World War Two【電子書籍】[ Helen Fry ]

A thrilling history of MI9ーthe WWII organization that engineered the escape of Allied forces from behind enemy lines

“A fitting tribute to the hundreds of men and women who risked their lives in assisting Allied escapees.”ーGiles Milton, Sunday Times (London)

“A masterful retelling with a fascinating cast of characters straight out of a John le Carr? thriller.”ーMark Felton, author of Castle of the Eagles

When Allied fighters were trapped behind enemy lines, one branch of military intelligence helped them escape: MI9. The organization set up clandestine routes that zig-zagged across Nazi-occupied Europe, enabling soldiers and airmen to make their way home. Secret agents and resistance fighters risked their lives and those of their families to hide the men.

Drawing on declassified files and eye-witness testimonies from across Europe and the United States, Helen Fry provides a significant reassessment of MI9’s wartime role. Central to its success were figures such as Airey Neave, Jimmy Langley, Sam Derry, and Mary Lindellーone of only a few women parachuted into enemy territory for MI9. This astonishing account combines escape and evasion tales with the previously untold stories behind the establishment of MI9ーand reveals how the organization saved thousands of lives.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 2,991円

Monster In The Dark Book 2 of 'The Mustela Secret Service'【電子書籍】[ C.J. Darling ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

The ferrets' Human pets have gone away for Christmas, and they're having fun playing. Suddenly they see a horrible ugly face in the window. It's a monsterand it's trying to get into their house!

Goliath might be the biggest ferret in the Mustela Secret Service, but he's really just a frightened baby. How can he protect old Nova and his friends? Somehow he has to be brave and strong!

~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
It was a monster! A gigantic ugly face was staring into the room. It had little black eyes, a big black nose, and strange little ears that flopped down on either side of its head. Its whole face was a mass of floppy brown and white wrinkles. Sharp white teeth pointed in all directions as it pushed its nose against the clear window glass.
Suddenly it threw its head back and howled again. It was a sad, lonely sound that sent the ferrets into a panic. Taz threw himself on top of Nova to protect her. Maggie and Zephyr dashed to the other end of their cage so fast that they fell down the ramp, and tumbled over each other. Goliath let out a single shrill scream, but he was too scared to move.
Down at the bottom of the cage, the older ferrets shivered and hid under their blankets. Zephyr finally stopped tumbling when she landed right on top of old Gonzo. Maggie fell against her, and poor Gonzo yelled at both of them to Get Off!
"Let me see." Nova was buried under Taz, who was shaking so hard that the entire cage was swaying. "Taz, get off me!"
Taz didn't move. "It's gone now! Where did it go?"
"Taz!" Nova tried to wiggle free, then reached over and bit his foot hard. "Off!"
"Ouch!" Taz jumped, and Nova crawled out from under him. "Nova, that hurt!"
"I couldn't breathe." Nova rubbed her whiskers against his sore foot in apology. "You're heavy."
"I'm sorry, Nova. I don't mean to be."
She nudged him in the ribs, and smiled up at him. "You can't help being big. It means you're healthy."
Poor Goliath was still standing frozen, staring at the window with huge eyes. "Wh-where did it go?"
Nova climbed up onto his shoulders so she could see the window better. The monster's big nose had left a wet smudge on the glass, but Taz was right. The monster was gone.
"I don't know. But it's gone now, Goliath." Gently she rubbed at his trembling ears with her nose. "You're safe. Nothing can get into the house unless Mom Human or Dad Human let it in."
"They'll never let a monster into the house." Maggie had climbed back up to the top level. Goliath got scared so easily that sometimes she got mad at him. But this time, she had been scared, too. So she didn't laugh at him, or make fun of him. "They'll never do anything that might hurt us."
"That's right." Zephyr was just behind her. "They take good care of us." She rubbed against Goliath, and felt him relax. "We're all safe as long as we stay inside the house."
Taz was still staring at the window, but his fur had calmed down again. "You've been outside without a Human guard, Zephyr. What do you think it was?"
Zephyr loved to talk about the time she'd snuck out of the house, and had romped all around the farm for two whole days before Dad Human had finally caught her in the barn and brought her back into the house. "There are lots of wild animals outside," she told him with big, serious eyes. "I've never seen anything like that before. It was too ugly to be a farm animal, so it must have been something wild."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 363円
Spies in the Promised Land: Isser Harel and the Israeli Secret Service【電子書籍】[ Michael Bar-Zohar ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
For 15 years the name of Isser Harel, the man in charge of all the intelligence branches of Israel, was top secret in Israel. Even when he resigned from office in March 1963 his name and picture remained undisclosed. Only in 1965, when he was appointed special adviser on intelligence and security to Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, were his name and picture revealed. But most of his past feats were still kept secret, even when stories about underground activities, the capture of a spy, or a mission abroad were disclosed. Alan Dulles, head of the CIA, declared at the time, “the Israeli services are the best in the world”. For what operations did the Israeli services deserve such credit? What was their modus operandi? How had they been established and developed? How did they conceive rules of ethics and morality? These questions and many more are answered in this book, which reveals the life story and operations of Isser Harel, whom David Ben-Gurion called “the guardian of Israel’s secrets and honor”.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,334円
British Secret Service During the Great War【電子書籍】[ Nicholas Everitt ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
There is something so mysterious and thrilling about Secret Service that the subject must inevitably appeal to the public, and especially to the more imaginative section of it. Secret Service is the theme of Mr. Nicholas Everitt's book, in which he describes the exciting adventures that he met with whilst in quest of information of use to his country during the Great War. In carrying out his task he proved himself to be a keen observer and a man of resource. His experience gives point to the old saying that a man's ability is shewn less in never getting into a scrape, for humanum est errare, than in knowing how to get out of one! There is perhaps no vocation in which it is easier to get into a tight corner and more difficult to get out again than in the Secret Service, where the sword of Damocles often hangs over one's head. Besides giving an account of his adventures, Mr. Everitt devotes no small part of his work to criticism of the Foreign Office and its overseas branchesーthe Diplomatic and Consular Services. He draws attention to what he conceives to be their defects and suggests how they might be remedied. While not concurring with everything said by the in regard to politics and politicians, I am sufficiently in agreement with the main features of his book to recommend it to the British Public, because I believe that publicity is the most potent instrument of Reform.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 640円
The Secret Service of Angels【電子書籍】[ Mary 'Fig' Stearne ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
Have you ever heard the expression, "What you don't know can't hurt you."
Well, this story is more like "what you can't see won't hurt you," or can it?
All around us, there is another dimension that no human can see or feel, except to those whom are chosen. They will team up with the Secret Service of Angels, and one of the chosen ones is trying to solve an eight-year-old mystery.
Maria's grandparents were presumably killed by what was called an act of nature. She will be accompanied by a friend from her adolescent years, Robert McDaniel, who will make their journey together complete and unforgettable. Maria Thomson will discover that her grandfather's stories were not just stories but facts about a secret life he and her grandmother shared.
Tobit, Maria's grandfather, was in the military, and he also was a CID (Criminal Investigation Command) agent. But there was a special agency within the agency that very few knew about. Now after eight years, Lieutenant Maria Thompson and Corporal Robert McDaniel both in the Marine Corps will be involved in a battle that no human could ever prepare themselves for.
Maria and Robert will devote themselves to a mystery they were destined to solve. On Maria's grandparents Sarah and Tobit Wright's estate, they will find a box that holds visions that must not get into the enemy's hands. And this enemy is the prince of darkness--the one whom some say does not exist. And that is what he wants the world to believe. His ancient fallen angels will bring all their evil powers to stop Maria and Robert. The angels of the Lord will also do what they were created for: to weed the fields of the world and bring home the good seeds--the children of the kingdom. Just like the parable of the weeds in the field.
The Explanation of the Parable of the Weeds
Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." He said in reply, "He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned [up] with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear. (Matthew 13:36-43)
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,134円
Cheating Death:Three-Time Presidential Secret Service Agent Lives to Tell You How【電子書籍】[ Kenneth M. Valentine ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
“Everyone, and I mean everyone, will give you advice on which way to go with your life. Friends, acquaintances, classmates, teammates, your friends’ friends, family, teachers, counselors, and neighbors will nose into your business. They will want to help you with everything from how to dress, to how to act. They will tell you what and where to eat, where to go and what to do. Before you know it, your whole life will be planned out for you, by someone else. If you are susceptible to influencers, choose your influences wisely.
“Not all advisors, or advice, is equal. In fact, some of the advice coming your way courtesy of well-meaning friends or family may be downright awful. Truly wise and useful advice will come from very few. The world will give you the same crummy advice it gives everyone. “Get fame. Pursue fortune. More is better!” The world consistently perpetuates the lie, that fame and fortune will make you happy.
“The world lies. Fame and fortune will not fill the void in our heart that was designed to be occupied by Christ. Only God can fill that God-shaped space within us. The world keeps trying, and people keep following the siren-song down the wide path to happy destruction.
“Happy is hard to define. I have determined that Happy is an elusive place. All of the world’s unfulfilled and dissatisfied people will call you to the same wide path, life-plan they followedーand expect a different result? I challenge you to take the narrow road. I urge you to trust in the Lord in all your decision making.”
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,504円
Jimmy Torrance, football player, boxer, socialite, athlete and all-around Big Man On Campus, is nearly kicked out of university, but upon pleading for a second chance, he is granted one and successfully graduates. Spurning an offer from his father to come work for the family business, he determines to make something of himself first, and repairs to Chicago. However, nothing comes of his many attempts to find work, and he despairs. Friendship with a pickpocket known as "The Lizard" cheers him up and he reapplies himself, finally finding work in a department store. He also makes the acquaintance of a young lady of quality, one Elizabeth Compton. Torrance gains (and loses) a number of jobs in rapid succession, including ladies' hosiery clerk, waiter, boxer, and milkman, chancing to meet Elizabeth and her friend Harriet Holden in most of these occupations. During his stint as a waiter, he also wins the friendship of a prostitute with a heart of gold named Edith (Little Eva).
Elizabeth's father runs a factory and is worried that he is losing money. He advertises for an "efficiency expert" to come help him turn things around. Edith sees the ad and encourages Torrance to apply, writing him fraudulent letters of recommendation to assist him. Torrance does indeed get the job, where he immediately begins to improve things while simultaneously beginning to suspect that someone at the factory is stealing. Elizabeth's fianc? Harold Bince, the factory's assistant manager ? who is himself the embezzler in question, due to large gambling debts ? tries to get Torrance fired, an effort in which Elizabeth herself eagerly assists.
Torrance figures out the truth and has Mr. Compton engage an outside firm of accountants to prove his case, not wanting to deliver the bad news himself. In desperation, Bince tries to get rid of Torrance, leading up to a violent climax in which Elizabeth's father is murdered and Torrance is framed. The Lizard and Little Eva work to get him off, an effort that finally succeeds when The Lizard takes the stand and proves Torrance could not have committed the murder. Bince, who has persuaded Elizabeth to marry him, is exposed and commits suicide. A sadder and wiser Elizabeth asks Torrance to take over as manager of the factory.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,067円
My Secret Service: Vienna, Sophia, Constantinople, Nish, Belgrade, Asia Minor【電子書籍】[ The Man Who Dined with The Kaiser ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
I am not a spy, that I wish to make abundantly clear; I am a journalist, and I love my profession. Equally well I love adventure and sport, the greatest sport in the world, in which the stake is the player’s life. “Were you ever afraid?” a young and charming English girl recently asked me. “Afraid!” I replied. “Listen! Imagine yourself with two maps next to your skin, each marked with German submarine bases, military works, and the like. Then you are interrogated by half-a-dozen German Secret Service officers. The least hesitation, the slightest faltering in a reply and, at a motion of the hand two German soldiers take you into an adjoining room, strip you, andーten minutes later you are dead.” The girl blushed: in my earnestness I had forgotten. Yes! I have been afraid many times; yet, with the gambler’s instinct, I have continued the game which, sooner or later, will probably end in a little episode in which the protagonists will be myself and a firing partyーsomewhere in the enemy country. I am a citizen of a neutral country. Those in high places whom it concerns know all about me, have seen my passports, examined what remains of my ticket on the Balkan Express with its perforation “18ー1ー16,” and can testify from the chain of documents I possess, from which not a link is missing, that I have actually been where I say I have. When war broke out I found myself in England, and I immediately saw in the terrible struggle great possibilities for myself. I am twenty-six years of age and speak, besides my native tongue, English, German, French and Flemish. I had lived in England before the war broke out, and have learned to love it second only to my own country. I was anxious to help in the great struggle, and I determined to try and find out as much as I could about the great German War-Machine. For twelve months I have been engaged upon this interesting task, visiting Frankfurt, Hanau, Neuwied, Essen (and other cities in Germany), Vienna, Buda Pesth, Bucharest, Sofia, Constantinople, Brasso, Rustchouk, Adrianople, Nish, Belgrade, Konia (Asia Minor), etc. Incidentally, I have proved that the German spy system is not so perfect as it is considered by many in this country. In all I have paid three visits to the enemy countries, each time using the same name, but following a different trade or profession. First I was a workman, and crossed the frontier in shamelessly shabby clothes and with very little impedimenta in the way of luggage. I professed to be a steel-driller, having had a very slight experience in that occupation, obtained for the purpose of my visit. In this guise I penetrated the German Holy of Holies, the famous Krupp factories at Essen. Here for some days I worked, until it was discovered what an execrably bad workman I was. Summary and ignominious dismissal followed, but never did a man take his dismissal less to heart than I. I had gathered some interesting and valuable information, and had seen many remarkable things. This was in March, 1915, although the account was not published until February, 1916, as the Censor prohibited my story appearing in the press, no doubt for very good reasons.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 640円
The World's Greatest Military Spies and Secret Service Agents【電子書籍】[ George Barton ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
(Excerpt): "The romance of war in its most thrilling form is exemplified in this narrative of the adventures of "The World's Greatest Military Spies and Secret Service Agents." Much has been published upon the subject of espionage, and the memoirs and secret histories of the courts of Europe give us instances of men and women who have gained favor and money, if not honor and glory, by selling back-stairs gossip concerning their fellow creatures; but the aim of the present work has been rather to relate the big exploits of those who faced great personal danger and risked their lives for the sake of flag and country."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 240円
