Forbidden Fashions Invisible Luxuries in Early Venetian Convents【電子書籍】[ Isabella Campagnol Fabretti ]

Form-fitting dresses, silk veils, earrings, furs, high-heeled shoes, make-up, and dyed, flowing hair. It is difficult for a contemporary person to reconcile these elegant clothes and accessories with the image of cloistered nuns. For many of the some thousand nuns in early modern Venice, however, these fashions were the norm. Often locked in convents without any religious callingーsimply to save their parents the expense of their dowryーthese involuntary nuns relied on the symbolic meaning of secular clothes, fabrics, and colors to rebel against the rules and prescriptions of conventual life and to define roles and social status inside monastic society.Calling upon mountains of archival documents, most of which have never been seen in print, Forbidden Fashions is the first book to focus specifically upon the dress of nuns in Venetian convents and offers new perspective on the intersection of dress and the city’s social and economic history.

This adaptation of Carlo Goldoni's 18th-century comedy The Venetian Twins quickly earned a reputation as one of the most boisterous, vibrant and irreverent works of Australian musical theatre following its initial season at the Sydney Opera House for the Nimrod Theatre Company in 1979. Rooted firmly in Commedia dell'arte yet unashamedly influenced by Kurt Weill, Donizetti and countless others in between, The Venetian Twins is an inspired piece of mayhem and musical pastiche.

Antonio Gardano, Venetian Music Printer, 1538-1569 A Descriptive Bibliography and Historical Study, 1550-1559【電子書籍】[ Mary Lewis ]

Antonio Gardano's publications are among the most important sources of 16th-century music. The second volume describes the output of this leading Italian music press in its cultural, bibliographical, and musical context. The first part of the book consists of an overview of Gardano's repertory from the fifties and the cultural and musical milieu in which he worked. It includes discussions of the continuing popularity of his earlier repertory, the music of the younger generation introduced in the fifties, the music of the composers around San Marco, and genres such as the multi-movement madrigal, the canzoni villanesche, instrumental works, and new anthologies. Also discussed are the dating of some undated editions, unconfirmed and doubtful prints, and ordering within the editions. A chapter on binder's copies describes groups of editions bound together by their early owners and serves as a valuable index to the tastes of the collectors. The catalog section covers all Gardano's known publications of the fifties, and provides full titles, bibliographical information, contents with concordant sources for each piece, and locations of individual copies with notes on their bindings, owners' marks, annotations, and other significant characteristics. The catalog is indexed by composer, first line, and short title, and includes a list of primary and secondary sources consulted.

Villa and Palace in the Venetian Renaissance The Palladian House Between Country and City【電子書籍】[ Johanna D. Heinrichs ]

Designed by Andrea Palladio, the Villa Pisani at Montagnana was the country residence of a Venetian nobleman, Francesco Pisani. Unusually, its design combines features of both villa and palace architecture, and it challenges the conventional view of a villa as subsidiary to the urban palace, the true seat of an elite family. In this book, Johanna D. Heinrichs offers the first comprehensive study of the Villa Pisani, providing a critical analysis of Palladio's hybrid design, the villa's original setting and uses, and the preoccupations of its patron. Heinrichs argues that the Villa Pisani served as the owner's principal residence. She also shows how a microhistorical approach can provide new insights about a familiar Renaissance building type and about the theory and practice of a canonical architect. Based on scrutiny of original documents and visual sources, Heinrichs's study is supported by a rich illustration program composed of photographs, plans, maps, and digital reconstructions.

Venetian Music in the Age of Vivaldi【電子書籍】[ Michael Talbot ]

This book contains sixteen essays on Venetian music in its last great period, stretching from the second half of the 17th century to the fall of the Republic in 1797. Two essays deal with musical institutions (academies and conservatories), nine with the life and works of Antonio Vivaldi, and five with contemporaries of Vivaldi active in Venice (Albinoni, Marcello, Vinaccesi). A substantial supplementary chapter updates, and where necessary revises, the facts and arguments of the original essays, which collectively date from the years 1973-1995. All the essays are written in English, but many originally appeared in Italian journals and conference proceedings that are hard for English-speaking readers to obtain. The volume is carefully indexed, enabling the reader easily to make connections between the essays.

Balkan Wars Habsburg Croatia, Ottoman Bosnia, and Venetian Dalmatia, 1499?1617【電子書籍】[ James D. Tracy ]

Distinguished scholar James D. Tracy shows how the Ottoman advance across Europe stalled in the western Balkans, where three great powers confronted one another in three adjoining provinces: Habsburg Croatia, Ottoman Bosnia, and Venetian Dalmatia. Until about 1580, Bosnia was a platform for Ottoman expansion, and Croatia steadily lost territory, while Venice focused on protecting the Dalmatian harbors vital for its trade with the Ottoman east. But as Habsburg-Austrian elites coalesced behind military reforms, they stabilized Croatia’s frontier, while Bosnia shifted its attention to trade, and Habsburg raiders crossing Dalmatia heightened tensions with Venice. The period ended with a long inconclusive war between Habsburgs and Ottomans, and a brief inconclusive war between Austria and Venice. Based on rich primary research and a masterful synthesis of key studies, this book is the first English-language history of the early modern Western Balkans. More broadly, it brings out how the Ottomans and their European rivals conducted their wars in fundamentally different ways. A sultan’s commands were not negotiable, and Ottoman generals were held to a time-tested strategy for conquest. Habsburg sovereigns had to bargain with their elites, and it took elaborate processes of consultation to rally provincial estates behind common goals. In the end, government-by-consensus was able to withstand government-by-command.

A History of the Venetian Republic【電子書籍】[ W. Carew Hazlitt ]

The ancient Italian province of Venetia is of interest to us in the present inquiry as the source to which the first Venetians looked as the home of their fathers or of their own youth. It was a region of Northern Italy, which extended from the foot of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea; but its boundaries seem to have undergone changes. After its subjugation by the Romans, Venetia was considered as forming part of Cisalpine Gaul. The people are described as a commercial, rather than a warlike, community; and it is a curious circumstance that they displayed in their dress, like their insular descendants, a predilection for black. An immense amount of confusion has arisen in the accounts of this country and its inhabitants by a failure to discriminate with proper care between the Veneti of America and their Adriatic namesakes. The former were remarkable for their proficiency in martial pursuits and their brave resistance to the Roman legions and navy; yet it is at the same time questionable whether the trade in amber conducted by Greeks and Phoenicians between Western Europe and the Baltic does not really belong to the Transalpine Veneti, who are also more likely to be the people among whom Herodotus relates that it was a custom to sell their marriageable daughters by auction...

This fictional short story offers readers a chance to sit in child's favorite place for just a moment. It is the sacred, secret place of a young girl suffering from obvious physical challenges who is contemplating her value in her small world. While in her favorite place--on the grassy slope of the town's cemetery--the ground's caretaker decides that today, of all the days he has seen her, he is going to reach out to her. He too suffers from disabilities due to an accident that took place on the Island of Murano, Italy while watching his Great Grandfather, a glassblower, masterfully create a beautiful Venetian glass vase. Beside the girl, readers listen as the ground's keeper attempts to share a story that he heard repeated on the evenings he was alone and healing from his life-altering accident, as told to him with only slight variations. And in the process, he helps her realize that she is more precious to the Lord than a Venetian Vase. This short story is written to inspire readers to contemplate their value as individual's despite the value assigned to them by the world. A Venetian Affair A true story of impossible love in the eighteenth century (Text Only)【電子書籍】[ Andrea di Robilant ]

The true story of forbidden love in eighteenth-century Venice between an Italian noble and the brilliant, illegitimate daughter of an English baronet.

In 1754 Andrea Memmo, the dashing and gifted scion of a distinguished catholic family, fell in love with illegitimate English beauty, Giustiniana Wynne. This match went against every convention of their day; it was an 'impossible love'.

The lovers chased each other through peeling palazzos, ballrooms, salons, theatres and gambling dens, rubbing shoulders with legendary figures such as Canaletto and their friend, Casanova. Increasingly desperate, they decided Giustiniana should marry to conceal their relationship. A summer passed in flirting with the English Consul, Joseph Smith, but he soon saw through the deception and the affair became public.

The consequences were disastrous. Casanova was imprisoned for his 'pernicious' influence. Disgraced, Giustiniana left for Paris, where she launched herself into society in the hunt for a new husband. Her love for Memmo had lingering consequences that were to break this match, and she left again for London, hoping to build a new life, but a different fate lay in store…

Andrea di Robilant is Andrea Memmo’s great great great grandson. The idea to write A Venetian Affair was planted when his father discovered Andrea's letters to Giustiniana mouldering in the attic of the family's crumbling Venetian palazzo. His father's violent murder inspired di Robilant to fulfil his father's dream to write about the lovers, and this fascinating, romantic tale is the result of di Robilant’s dedication and passion.

Note that it has not been possible to include the same picture content that appeared in the original print version.

Early Life Narratives Venetian, Ionian, British and Spartan Origins【電子書籍】[ Joan Markessini ]

Early Life Narratives: Venetian, Ionian, British and Spartan Origins

By: Joan Markessini

These narratives spell the lives of my parents and grandparents: All were children when they departed their homelands, three of the four came alone and one was a babe in the arms of a solitary fragile young mother. Their origins, journeys, hardships, loves, and triumphs as they voyaged from one continent to another are in part memoir, in part biographies laced to historical facts.

One could simply view the subject starkly as a small set of case studies dealing with immigration and its effects upon the spirit and lives of people who undertake it. That view would be true as far as it goes.

But the narratives embraced here attempt to delve deeper. They are given as delineations that might enable others to visualize the stories of their ancestors and thereby loom their own immigration histories from the threads of their forbearers' lives.

Upon the basic facts and events of those lives, held firm, are images and reflections interlaced to create the patterns of an emergent design. Together, this warp and woof represents the substance, the fabric, of lives created in a new world.

Mirrors of Heaven or Worldly Theaters? Venetian Nunneries and Their Music【電子書籍】[ Jonathan E. Glixon ]

Mirrors of Heaven or Worldly Theaters? Venetian Nunneries and Their Music explores the dynamic role of music performance and patronage in the convents of Venice and its lagoon from the sixteenth century to the fall of Venice around 1800. Examining sacred music performed by the nuns themselves and by professional musicians they employed, author Jonathan E. Glixon considers the nuns as collective patrons, of both musical performances by professionals in their external churches-primarily for the annual feast of the patron saint, a notable attraction for both Venetians and foreign visitors-and of musical instruments, namely organs and bells. The book explores the rituals and accompanying music for the transitions in a nun's life, most importantly the ceremonies through which she moved from the outside world to the cloister, as well as liturgical music within the cloister, performed by the nuns themselves, from chant to simple polyphony, and the rare occasions where more elaborate music can be documented. Also considered are the teaching of music to both nuns and girls resident in convents as boarding students, and entertainment-musical and theatrical-by and for the nuns. Mirrors of Heaven, the first large-scale study of its kind, contains richly detailed appendices featuring a calendar of musical events at Venetian nunneries, details on nunnery organs, lists of teachers, and inventories of musical and ceremonial books, both manuscript and printed. A companion website supplements the book's musical examples with editions of complete musical works, which are brought to life with accompanying audio files.

The Stones of Venice Study of Venetian Architecture【電子書籍】[ John Ruskin ]

In "The Stones of Venice," John Ruskin embarks on a profound exploration of the architectural grandeur and aesthetic philosophies embedded within the gothic structures of Venice. Through meticulous descriptions and detailed analyses, Ruskin crafts a rich narrative that marries art and moral philosophy, arguing for a deeper appreciation of craftsmanship and the intrinsic value of beauty in society. His literary style is characterized by lyrical prose interwoven with historical references and socio-political critique, situating the work within the broader Victorian discourse on industrialization and its impact on artistry and culture. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a leading art critic, social thinker, and advocate for the Arts and Crafts movement, influenced by his formative years steeped in the beauty of nature and architecture. His extensive travels across Europe and his deep convictions about the decline of moral integrity in art fueled his desire to engage with and preserve the artistic heritage of the past, particularly in the face of rapid industrialization. This background inspired him to examine Venice, a city emblematic of artistic richness and cultural decay. "The Stones of Venice" is a must-read for anyone interested in art history, architecture, or the interplay between ethics and aesthetics. Ruskin's insights resonate powerfully today, inviting readers to reconsider the significance of beauty in our increasingly mechanized world, making it a timeless and essential work.

Venetian Born is a story about friendshipーan unlikely friendship between two very different boys with very similar names; Piero Caesar Alberti, raised on a Lido farm before being moved to a backwater port town to work at an inn, and Giulio Caesar Alberti, born into the second highest class of Venezia and in training at the Ducal Palace to be a Secretary-Ambassador if not Secretary to the Ten like his father. These were real characters, in the flesh, ones who did exist in that exact time, and lived, studied, or worked in those exact places the author, Andy Burtis, describes: He knows, for he has stayed in the same inn at Malamocco that Piero worked in before sailing off to Holland and America in his second and third books of the trilogy of these characters’ Bildungsroman.

His researchers, one a Ph.D in Venetian History from Princeton, the other from Padova who specializes in the Alberti families of Venice, have brought life from the archives like sculptors working on solid stone. On his part, he stayed enough ahead of them to lead their research, mostly with what he found in Alan Hinds voluminous ‘Calendar of State Papers’ related to Venetian Affairs, where he found mention of Giulio’s family situation at the time of Giulio’s father’s imprisonment. Imagine his excitement at hearing from his researchers that they found what he was hoping for from what he had learned about the character of Giulio’s fatherーthat Andrea Alberti was framed by the same witnesses as a famous noble of the time. In fact, Giulio's father was exonerated of treason just after the famous ambassador, the Cavaliere Antonio Foscarini, in 1623. Truth indeed, can not only embellish, but actually trump fiction. And it can be something to look forward to.

Now add to this the charm of Venice itself where all this plays out, which can never be just a background but cries out like the stones, like this novel's children, to be seen and heard, and appreciated: The Grand Canal as negotiated by Giulio’s family gondolier, Romano, The Ducal Palace with all its secret chambers and gilded halls and staircases, salons great as the Consiglio Maggiore Giulio attends and as small as that where Fiamo gives his testimony at the trial of the Doge Mocenigo's son for murdering Cecco's only daughter who was picking berries to take him. Laugh at the farcical attempt of Giulio to take notes of all that was deliberated at the Senate as part of his secretarial training.

Indeed, intrigue veritably oozes out of walls studded with the lion’s heads that hear every word. Imagine the sunrise on the lagoon that Piero would see on his way to work in his Uncle Giobbo's produce boat. Imagine the immense Arsenale from the vantage point of a nine-year-old Piero who has decided to become the ships carpenter and caulker. Picture the Rialto where Giobbo drops off the Lido's produce before going up to the Basilica San Marco's rafters to hear the great Monteverdi conduct his practice sessions and aping those melodies on his violin.

Thumb through the pages to find pictures of the palazzi of Venice like the medieval castle converted into the Fondaco dei Turchi where Giulio does the books for his nefarious uncle to learn the Eastern Trade, and meets the wild-eyed Turkish boy dubbed ‘Ji’ for the Jihadi he always talks about back home in his ‘Islambol.’ And of course, there are always the dungeons where the beloved members of each boy’s family wind up, and where Piero runs messages to and from those waiting so anxiously to hear some news, any news…. Finally, discover the value of Venice to the world, its character so often marginalized to stories of romance and masquerade. Learn what made it not just an oligarchy but a republic strong enough to inspire countries like England, Holland, France, even America with its freedoms, longevity, and industry.

History of the Venetian Republic【電子書籍】[ W.

The former were remarkable for their proficiency in martial pursuits and their brave resistance to the Roman legions and navy; yet it is at the same time questionable whether the trade in amber conducted by Greeks and Phoenicians between Western Europe and the Baltic does not really belong to the Transalpine Veneti, who are also more likely to be the people among whom Herodotus relates that it was a custom to sell their marriageable daughters by auction.
There seems to be some plausibility in the suggestion that a colony passing in the course of migration from their native soil to Asia Minor, proceeded thence, in process of time, to Northern Italy, on the shores of which they formed numerous settlements. These colonists were called Tyrrhenians or Etruscans; they became the founders, at successive periods, of Spina at the mouth of the Po, and Hadria or Hatria in its vicinity, both of which attained the highest degree of commercial prosperity. No vestiges of the former are now visible, though the name may seem to have survived in the islet of Spinalunga, a later alluvial formation. The gradual deposits of nature have had the effect of removing Hadria to a distance of more than fourteen miles from that sea on which it once stood, and which still bears its nameーthe Hadria iracunda of Horace. Nor has the decline been recent; for even in the time of the Romans these places presented little more than the shadow of their pristine greatness...
