The Roots of Pope Francis's Social and Political Thought From Argentina to the Vatican【電子書籍】[ Thomas R. Rourke ]

In The Roots of Pope Francis’s Social and Political Thought Thomas R. Rourke traces the development of Pope Francis’s thinking from his time as a Jesuit provincial through today. Meticulously researched, the book draws on decades of previously untranslated writings from Father Jorge Bergoglio, SJ, who went on to become archbishop and cardinal; this volume also references his recent writings as pope.

The book explores the deepest roots of Pope Francis’s thinking, beginning with the experience of the Jesuit missions in Argentina (1500s ? 1700s), showing how both the success and tragedy of the missions profoundly formed his social and political views. Subsequent chapters explore influences from the Second Vatican Council through today regarding culture, politics, and economics. In Pope Francis’s understanding, there is a perpetual tension between the attempts to redeem the social order through the Gospel and the never-ending attempts to dominate peoples and their lands through a variety of imperial projects that come from the powerful. What emerges is a profoundly Christian approach to the social, political, and economic problems of our time. The Pope is portrayed as an original thinker, independent of ideological currents, rooted in the Gospels and the tradition of Catholic social thought. In a time of division and violence, the writings of Pope Francis often point to the path of peace and justice.

Science Fiction in Argentina Technologies of the Text in a Material Multiverse【電子書籍】[ Joanna Page ]

It has become something of a critical commonplace to claim that science fiction does not actually exist in Argentina. This book puts that claim to rest by identifying and analyzing a rich body of work that fits squarely in the genre. Joanna Page explores a range of texts stretching from 1875 to the present day and across a variety of media-literature, cinema, theatre, and comics-and studies the particular inflection many common discourses of science fiction (e.g., abuse of technology by authoritarian regimes, apocalyptic visions of environmental catastrophe) receive in the Argentine context. A central aim is to historicize these texts, showing how they register and rework the contexts of their production, particularly the hallmarks of modernity as a social and cultural force in Argentina. Another aim, held in tension with the first, is to respond to an important critique of historicism that unfolds in these texts. They frequently unpick the chronology of modernity, challenging the linear, universalizing models of development that underpin historicist accounts. They therefore demand a more nuanced set of readings that work to supplement, revise, and enrich the historicist perspective.

Foreign and Domestic Investment in Argentina The Politics of Privatized Infrastructure【電子書籍】[ Alison E. Post ]

Political economy scholarship suggests that private sector investment, and thus economic growth, is more likely to occur when formal institutions allow states to provide investors with credible commitments to protect property rights. This book argues that this maxim does not hold for infrastructure privatization programs. Rather, differences in firm organizational structure better explain the viability of privatization contracts in weak institutional environments. Domestic investors - or, if contracts are granted subnationally, domestic investors with diverse holdings in their contract jurisdiction - work most effectively in the volatile economic and political environments of the developing world. They are able to negotiate mutually beneficial adaptations to their contracts with host governments because cross-sector diversification provides them with informal contractual supports. The book finds strong empirical support for this argument through an analysis of fourteen water and sanitation privatization contracts in Argentina and a statistical analysis of sector trends in developing countries.

British-Owned Railways in Argentina Their Effect on the Growth of Economic Nationalism, 1854-1948【電子書籍】[ Winthrop R. Wright ]

During the nineteenth century, British-owned railways grew under the protection of an Argentine ruling elite that considered railways both instruments and symbols of progress. Under this program of support for foreign enterprise, Argentina had by 1914 built the largest railway network in Latin America.

During the first decades of the twentieth century, the railways were successful in following a policy of calculated disregard for Argentine interests in general. However, following the end of World War I, the British economic empire began to decline and Argentine economic nationalism grew. A number of popularistic political movements incorporated economic nationalism into their platforms, and even among the ruling elite there were signs of increasing nationalistic sentiment.

Although most studies of economic nationalism have emphasized the importance of the middle-class Radical party in the rise of xenophobia, Winthrop R. Wright's study shows that antiforeign economic nationalism was not entirely a reaction to the conservative elite. Between 1932 and 1938 the nationalistic programs of General Agustin Justo's governmentーbasically a conservative regimeーled the British interests to decide to sell their holdings. The British govemment had arrived at a position of supporting the economic withdrawal of the large British-owned firms long before Juan D. Per?n appeared on the political scene.

Per?n combined traditional Argentine economic nationalism with his own scheme to gain power over all elements in Argentina. His solution to the railway problem, although more dramatically executed, did not differ greatly from that of the conservative Justo. Per?n purchased the railways outright in 1947?1948, but his use of nationalism was in reality covering his own inability to outbargain Britain and the United States following the conclusion of World War II.

Tourism in Northeastern Argentina The Intersection of Human and Indigenous Rights with the Environment【電子書籍】[ Penny Seymoure ]

Ecotourism is often promoted as a way to visit a unique area of spectacular beauty. While tourists travel to these destinations to view environmental wonders, they seldom consider the effects of their visit on the indigenous people or on the location itself. Tourism in Northeastern Argentina: The Intersection of Human and Indigenous Rights with the Environment, an edited collection by Penny Seymoure and Jeffrey L. Roberg, examines the impact of tourism on indigenous and local populations, and the environment they live in, specifically in several locations in the northeast of Argentina.
Several of the chapters examine the lives and problems of the Mbya Guaran? people, an indigenous culture that has been attempting to survive in the rainforest of Misiones Province. In recent years, the loss of traditional lands, some of which was taken for tourist hotels, has led the Mbya to engage in tourism, with both positive and negative changes to their culture. Most of the tourists who interact with the Mbya come to the area to see the beautiful Iguazu National Park and Waterfalls, and stay in the nearby city of Puerto Iguazu. The waterfalls now draw over one million visitors a year.
The authors of this volume further explore how, while Puerto Iguazu has been engaged in mass tourism for many years, the nearby small town of Colonia Carlos Pelligrini has struggled to keep its younger tourism industry modest due, in part, to its location near pristine wetlands. This town faces a number of challenges that must be addressed soon to protect both the surrounding wetlands and the town itself.
Tourism in Northeastern Argentina explores all of these issues, and more, in the context of human and indigenous rights and the protection of the environment.

Workers Go Shopping in Argentina The Rise of Popular Consumer Culture【電子書籍】[ Natalia Milanesio ]

In 1951 an Argentine newspaper announced that the standard of living of workers in Argentina was “the highest in the world.” More than half a century later, Argentines still look back to the mid-twentieth century as the “golden years of Peronism,” a time when working people, who had struggled to make ends meet a few years earlier, could now buy ready-made clothing, radios, and even big-ticket items like refrigerators. Milanesio explores this period marked by populist politics, industrialization, and a fairer distribution of the national income by analyzing the relations among consumers, consumer goods, manufacturers, advertising agents, and Juan Domingo Per?n’s government (1946?1955).

Combining theories from the anthropology of consumption, cultural studies, and gender studies with the methodologies of social, cultural, and oral histories, Milanesio shows the exceptional cultural and social visibility of low-income consumers in postwar Argentina along with their unprecedented economic and political influence. Her study reveals the scope of the remarkable transformations fueled by the new market by examining the language and aesthetics of advertisement, the rise of middle- and upper-class anxieties, and the profound changes in gender expectations.

Mendoza, Argentina Travel Guide - What To See & Do【電子書籍】[ Kenneth Humphrey ]

Our illustrated travel guide will take you to Mendoza, Argentina.

Mendoza is a city in western Argentina, in the desert Cuyo region. Mendoza is the center of the Argentinian wine industry, for which it is world renowned. It is also near the Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of the Himalayas. Mendoza is the capital of the province of Mendoza.

Although it is situated in an extremely dry desert region, Mendoza has an extensive artificial irrigation system, which allows for greenery throughout the city as well as the growth of the grapes used to make its famous wines. Most streets have irrigation channels on either side, with bridges for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. These are periodically flooded with water diverted from the river. The trees and the wide avenues give the city a beautiful ambience, a change from much of the bare feel of many Argentine cities.

Finding Internet access when out and about can be problematic so carry your mobile guidebook in the palm of your hand.
