Black Africans in the British Imagination English Narratives of the Early Atlantic World【電子書籍】[ Cassander L. Smith ]

As Spain and England vied for dominance of the Atlantic world during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, mounting political and religious tensions between the two empires raised a troubling specter for contemporary British writers attempting to justify early English imperial efforts. Specifically, these writers focused on encounters with black Africans throughout the Atlantic world, attempting to use these points of contact to articulate and defend England’s global ambitions. In Black Africans in the British Imagination, Cassander L. Smith investigates how the physical presence of black Africans both enabled and disrupted English literary responses to Spanish imperialism. By examining the extent to which this population helped to shape early English narratives, from political pamphlets to travelogues, Smith offers new perspectives on the literary, social, and political impact of black Africans in the early Atlantic world.

With detailed analysis of the earliest English-language accounts from the Atlantic world, including writings by Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Ralegh, and Richard Ligon, Smith approaches contact narratives from the perspective of black Africans, recovering figures often relegated to the margins. This interdisciplinary study explores understandings of race and cross-cultural interaction and revises notions of whiteness, blackness, and indigeneity. Smith reveals the extent to which contact with black Africans impeded English efforts to stigmatize the Spanish empire as villainous and to malign Spain’s administration of its colonies. In addition, her study illustrates how black presences influenced the narrative choices of European (and later Euro-American) writers, providing a more nuanced understanding of black Africans’ role in contemporary literary productions of the region.

Being Nuclear Africans and the Global Uranium Trade【電子書籍】[ Gabrielle Hecht ]

The hidden history of African uranium and what it meansーfor a state, an object, an industry, a workplaceーto be “nuclear.”

Uranium from Africa has long been a major source of fuel for nuclear power and atomic weapons, including the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In 2003, after the infamous “yellow cake from Niger,” Africa suddenly became notorious as a source of uranium, a component of nuclear weapons. But did that admit Niger, or any of Africa's other uranium-producing countries, to the select society of nuclear states? Does uranium itself count as a nuclear thing? In this book, Gabrielle Hecht lucidly probes the question of what it means for somethingーa state, an object, an industry, a workplaceーto be “nuclear.”

Hecht shows that questions about being nuclearーa state that she calls “nuclearity”ーlie at the heart of today's global nuclear order and the relationships between “developing nations” (often former colonies) and “nuclear powers” (often former colonizers). Hecht enters African nuclear worlds, focusing on miners and the occupational hazard of radiation exposure. Could a mine be a nuclear workplace if (as in some South African mines) its radiation levels went undetected and unmeasured? With this book, Hecht is the first to put Africa in the nuclear world, and the nuclear world in Africa. By doing so, she remakes our understanding of the nuclear age.

Etuk has been indefatigable in his profound determination for African revolution as admonished not only in this piece but also in his other works.
Adams O. Adah, Founder of Impart Africa, author of Service

As Africa begins her journey into the twenty-fi rst century, the citizens ask: how can we survive? In Listen Africans! A Revolution is Coming, author Emma Samuel Etuk addresses the question of revolutiona fundamental change to the basic fabric of societyand its historical manifestations.

Through thorough research, Etuk presents strong arguments about the need for change in the social, political, economic, and religious life of Africans. He contends that an array of issues has brought the continent to this point, including broken promises by administrators and governments; poverty and widespread hunger; angry youth and unemployment; official corruption, insensitivity, and kleptocracy; tyranny, despotism, and dictatorships; state-sponsored terrorism; infrastructural decay; and environmental pollution. As Etuk uses these examples and makes a call for a revolution, he provides a backdrop by discussing the following:

Origin of revolutions Necessity for an African revolution Theological basis for a revolution Five kinds of revolutions Lessons learned from the six major revolutions of the past Preparation for a revolution

Etuk maintains that change is necessary in life and that it is up to the Africans to decide what kind of revolution they should adopt in order to affect change on their continent.

The Evolution of Africans in North America The Three Phases of Permanent Perpetual Slavery【電子書籍】[ Archie J. Williams ]

Perspectives: The Evolution of Africans in North America The Three Phases of Permanent Perpetual Slavery uses history from a quasi-clinical perspective. Although this book is not intended as a purely scientifically qualified approach it nevertheless uses elements by observing patterns of events shaping socio-environmental conditions impacting on a targeted group. Breaking the evolutional changes into phases should help to structure a view of the symptoms presented at this point in time. From that you can begin to diagnosis the pathology resulting from the long-term traumatic events. For that reason this book will observe the Peculiar closed system of slavery institutionalized in Colonial America and extending into the core foundation of the American Society as it is today. Hopefully this crude analysis using the three phases of perpetual slavery will bring some understanding of the present day functioning of the identified group, African Americans, and will assist with predicting what path for treatment would most impact the greatest healing.

Africans in the Old South Mapping Exceptional Lives across the Atlantic World【電子書籍】[ Randy J. Sparks ]

The Atlantic slave trade was the largest forced migration in history, and its toll in lives damaged or destroyed is incalculable. Most of those stories are lost to history, making the few that can be reconstructed critical to understanding the trade in all its breadth and variety. Randy J. Sparks examines the experiences of a range of West Africans who lived in the American South between 1740 and 1860. Their stories highlight the diversity of struggles that confronted every African who arrived on American shores.

The subjects of Africans in the Old South include Elizabeth Cleveland Hardcastle, the mixed-race daughter of an African slave-trading family who invested in South Carolina rice plantations and slaves, passed as white, and integrated herself into the Lowcountry planter elite; Robert Johnson, kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Georgia, who later learned English, won his freedom, and joined the abolition movement in the North; Dimmock Charlton, who bought his freedom after being illegally enslaved in Savannah; and a group of unidentified Africans who were picked up by a British ship in the Caribbean, escaped in Mobile’s port, and were recaptured and eventually returned to their homeland.

These exceptional lives challenge long-held assumptions about how the slave trade operated and who was involved. The African Atlantic was a complex world characterized by constant movement, intricate hierarchies, and shifting identities. Not all Africans who crossed the Atlantic were enslaved, nor was the voyage always one-way.

Africans are not Blameless【電子書籍】[ Bello Gusau ]

The book is about Africa, its past, present and likely future scenario. It is challenging the old dogma that claimed African’s backwardness is primarily caused by external forces, notably slavers and colonialists. On closer look, 40 to 50 years of Independence supposed to produce some positive changes to Africa and its people in terms of development. This happened in Asia and not in Africa. Why? The book makes an in-depth analytical study of Africa and unreservedly argues that African leaders and its people must accept share of the blames. Thus the title of the book AFRICANS ARE NOT BLAMELESS. The book also comes up with solutions that will help Africa tackle problems bedeviling the continent, such as bad governance, poverty, education, diseases etc. The book is made up of thirteen chapters, consisted of 440 pages and about 82,473 words.

Recent Happenings
Increasingly the content of this book is gradually revealing itself with some predictive consistencies. The Cote d’ Ivoire saga where Laurel Gbagbo constitutes a nuisance to the Continent, the Ghaddafi sad end, the continues coups and counter coups in countries like Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Guinea Conakry , religious fundamentalism in Nigeria that is becoming senseless and bloody , political upheavals in Kenya, Democratic republic of Congo and the breakage of Sudan into two countries. All these events happened in a relatively short period of time. The inability of Africans to look in-wards made reforms and corrections extremely difficult. African leaders still glorify powers akin to emperors of the middle ages. The scramble for the African riches is reaching its nadirs. Oil and natural resources are being discovered in sub-Saharan countries not by the countries themselves but by the new emerging economies in Asia and Latin America. Niger, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, Chad, Ghana, Mauritania etc have found oil in their territories. Wealth based on natural resources is a lazy way to reaches, as finitely as the new wealth so also the destabilizing aspects of easy money in African polity.

We are All Africans Here Race, Mobilities and West Africans in Europe【電子書籍】[ Krist?n Loftsd?ttir ]

Europe is often described as "flooded" by migrants or by Muslim "others," with Western African men especially portrayed as a security risk. At the same time the intensified mobility of privileged people in the Global North is celebrated as creating an increasingly cosmopolitan world. This book looks critically at racialization of mobility in Europe, anchoring the discussion in the aspiration of precarious migrants from Niger in Belgium and Italy. The book contextualizes their experiences within the ongoing securitization of mobility in their home country and the persistent denial of racism and colonialism that seeks to portray the innocence of Europe.

Africa and China How Africans and Their Governments are Shaping Relations with China【

The China-Africa relationship has so far largely been depicted as one in which the Chinese state and Chinese entrepreneurs control the agenda, with Africans and their governments as passive actors exercising little or no agency. This volume examines the African side of the relation, to show how African state and non-state actors increasingly influence the China-Africa partnership and, in so doing, begin to shape their economic and political futures.

The influx of public and private sector Chinese actors across the African continent has led to a rise of opportunities and challenges, which the volume sets out to examine. With case studies from Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Zambia, and across the technology, natural resource, manufacturing, and financial sectors, it shows not only how African realities shape Chinese actions, but also how African governments and entrepreneurs are learning to leverage their competitive advantages and to negotiate the growing Chinese presence across the continent.

Diverse Pathways Race and the Incorporation of Black, White, and Arab-Origin Africans in the United States【電子書籍】[ Kevin J. A. Thomas ]

Africans are among the fastest-growing immigrant groups in the United States. Although they are racially and ethnically diverse, few studies have examined how these differences affect their patterns of incorporation into society. This book is the first to highlight the role of race and ethnicity, Arab ethnicity in particular, in shaping the experiences of African immigrants. It demonstrates that American conceptions of race result in significant inequalities in the ways in which African immigrants are socially integrated. Thomas argues that suggestions that Black Africans are model-minorities who have overcome the barriers of race are misleading, showing that Black and Arab-ethnicity Africans systematically experience less favorable socioeconomic outcomes than their White African counterparts. Overall, the book makes three critical arguments. First, historical and contemporary constructions of race have important implications for understanding the dynamics of African immigration and settlement in the United States. Second, there are significant racial inequalities in the social and economic incorporation of contemporary African immigrants. Finally, Arab ethnicity has additional implications for understanding intra-racial disparities in incorporation among contemporary African immigrants. In general, these arguments are foundational for understanding the diversity of African immigrant experiences.

The Rescue of Jerusalem The Alliance Between Hebrews and Africans in 701 BC【電子書籍】[ Henry Aubin ]

In 701 BC, the powerful Assyrian army laid siege to Jerusalem, threatening the Hebrew kingdom with destruction. What saved the City of David? The Bible credits divine intervention. Modern scholars have long speculated that a plague spread through the ranks of the Assyrian soldiers, forcing them to withdraw.

Now, in this ground-breaking account, award-winning author Henry Aubin argues that it was the Kushites, the black Africans who formed Egypt’s 25th dynasty, who saved Jerusalem, the birthplace of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In his powerful, wide-ranging analysis, Aubin shows how Western scholarship turned its back on the theory of black African involvement.

The account of the long-forgotten African and Hebrew alliance that rescued Jerusalem will change the face of Jewish and African history and contribute to a fresh understanding of our world today.

Africans in East Anglia, 1467-1833【電子書籍】[ Richard C. Maguire ]

This book examines the population of Africans in Norfolk and Suffolk from 1467, the date of the first documented reference to an African in the region, to 1833, when Parliament voted to abolish slavery in the British Empire. It uncovers the complexity of these Africans' historical experience, considering the interaction of local custom, class structure, tradition, memory, and the gradual impact of the Atlantic slaving economy.

Richard C. Maguire proposes that the initial regional response to arriving Africans during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was not defined exclusively by ideas relating to skin colour, but rather by local understandings of religious status, class position, ideas about freedom and bondage, and immediate local circumstances. Arriving Africans were able to join the region's working population through baptism, marriage, parenthood, and work.

This manner of response to Africans was challenged as local merchants and gentry begin doing business with the slaving economy from the mid-seventeenth century onwards. Although the racialised ideas underpinning Atlantic slavery changed the social circumstances of Africans in the region, the book suggests that they did not completely displace older, more inclusive, ideas in working communities.

NewAfricanLeaders interprets the heritage and history of the African community in Birmingham, United Kingdom, exploring both individual and collective achievements and contributions to the recent history of the city. Ebot Ashu researches the stories of Africans in Birmingham and provides in this volume a unique record of why they or their parents came to the United Kingdom, their experiences when they arrived, their subsequent experience of settlement and integration, as well as their achievements and contributions within their adopted society. It focuses on the entire African Diaspora in Birmingham and beyond. The content of this anthology is strongly international in that, while it may publish empirical research and scholarship undertaken in specific local contexts, it considers issues and themes of interest that transcend any single geographic setting. The anthology, therefore, offers an impressive collection of archival material and learning resources for this and future generations, and also serves as a testament to the increasingly diverse heritage that UK society has drawn from many different ethnic and linguistic groups, cultures and religions. In this regard this volume will be of interest to students at school and university, to their teachers and to academics as well as practitioners and policy makers in social science.

Africans and Native Americans The Language of Race and the Evolution of Red-Black Peoples【電子書籍】[ Jack D. Forbes ]

Jack D. Forbes's monumental Africans and Native Americans has become a canonical text in the study of relations between the two groups. Forbes explores key issues relating to the evolution of racial terminology and European colonialists' perceptions of color, analyzing the development of color classification systems and the specific evolution of key terms such as black, mulatto, and mestizo--terms that no longer carry their original meanings. Forbes also presents strong evidence that Native American and African contacts began in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.

‘Malleable at the European Will’: British Discourse on Slavery (1784?1824) and the Image of Africans【電子書籍】[ Helmut Meier ]

Helmut Meier‘s study of pro- and anti-slavery texts from 1784?1825 focuses on understanding the distinct image of Africans in the British debate on the slave trade and slavery as such. Starting from the premise that, at the threshold from the early to the late modern period, the distinct image of Africans as slaves was instrumental in universalizing a Eurocentric concept of capitalist wage labor both at the colonial centres and margins, Meier argues that, by portraying African slaves as suffering wretches, especially anti-slavery texts created colonial Others in an indistinct zone between inclusion and exclusion from humanity. The discourse on slavery thus constructs African slaves as mimetic Others which could subsequently become the objects of a discourse of colonial reform and ‘betterment’.

The Africans Late State Matters【電子書籍】[ Bernard Benson Sarfo ]

The Africa Politics has hindered the development of the nation. African's lack of understanding of politics and its importance. Politics accepts people's opinions and the rule of many. Some African's politicians are fraudulent. They don't care about the business of politics; they only concern themselves with their personal interests. This stifles the nation's development. I see them as ‘eaters' and ‘wasters' rather than ‘farmers'.

Everyone born into this world has a language heritage; it is without your decision, just as you do not decide where you want to be born. You can study, speak, and write somebody’s language, but you should not rule your home or nation by the language your forebears do not understand. If you do so, you have sold your dignity to dishonour your mother tongue.

The doom of African’s as continent today lies in the use of the strange language to rule our nations. Our development is pivoted on the language our mothers understand. The language we use is the knowledge we have, and the knowledge we have stands on the language we use. We understand implicitly by our native language.

The Virtues and the Greatness of the Ancestors of the Africans in the Diaspora【電子書籍】[ Prince Joseph Olusoji Agunloye ]

Every immigrant did not come voluntarily to America. In 1619, a year before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the first shipload of twenty Africans arrived at Jamestown, Virginia. For more than two hundred years, these Africans were brought against their will from the coastal countries of West Africa. These forced immigrants were prevented from preserving their history and culture. And this is why so many African Americans, Jamaicans, Haitians, Trinidadians, and all the black people whose ancestors migrated from Africa against their will to the Western world beginning from the fifteenth century do not know their history beyond slavery. The results of this forced migration and lack of knowledge of true history have shown themselves in epidemic levels of individual low self-esteem, lack of trust, team work, group self-confidence, black on black crimes heavy school drop-outs and low graduation rates among the Africans in the Diaspora, to mention a few. The virtues and the greatness of the ancestors, which present in colorful pictures the customs and occupations of the ancestors of the Africans in the Diaspora, and traces their true history to the periods when they were kings, chiefs, and nobles in West Africa, is written to build the self-esteem of their descendants, in the kindergarten, grades one, two, three and four as well as teach and reinforce their social and academic skills. It is written to correct at an early age, the negative information that limits their origin in life to former plantation slaves and make them grow with the beliefs that the stars of greatness are also in their DNA and within their reach, as it is often believed and assumed by the European children in their various classes and schools. The facts contained in the story book are contributions from the interviews granted by some Professors of African, and African American history, Oral and Palace historians from Africa, African elders over one hundred, and from my previous documentary, From Palace to Plantation to Glory.

The Empire of Progress West Africans, Indians, and Britons at the British Empire Exhibition, 1924?25【電子書籍】[ D. Stephen ]

This much-needed study of the British Empire Exhibition reveals durable, persistent connections between empire and domestic society in Britain during the interwar years. It demonstrates that the Exhibition was a marker of how by 1924, imperial relations were increasingly likely to be shaped by forces located on the colonial periphery.
