The Agincourt Campaign of 1415 The Retinues of the Dukes of Clarence and Gloucester【電子書籍】[ Dr Michael P. Warner ]
|

King Henry V's brothers, Thomas, duke of Clarence, and Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, recruited the two largest retinues of the famous army of 1415, whose service culminated in victory at Agincourt. At the heart of this book are case studies of these two retinues, the personnel of which have never been the subject of close scrutiny before. These retinues were made up of, respectively, 960 and 800 men, most of whose names are known from their complete surviving muster rolls. Using this crucial information, and by employing information from a wide range of sources, from official Chancery and Exchequer records to manorial accounts and personal the lives of many of these men can be reconstructed.
One central theme of this book is concerned with the men themselves, and considers issues such as where they came from in 1415, their previous military, career and personal experiences, and whether they had pre-existing ties with either their ducal commander, sub-retinue captain or comrades. It charts the experience of the retinues from before the campaign (the mustering of the army), during the campaign (the siege of Harfleur and the Battle of Agincourt) and after the campaign (the future careers of some men and the influence the campaign had on the ducal affinities). It also considers wider historiographical issues relating to the "dynamics of recruitment", military professionalism, careerism, the changing socio-economic standing of those undertaking military service in the early fifteenth century, and the size and willingness to engage in martial activity of the English military community.

The epic battle immortalized by William Shakespeare in his classic Henry V is the background for this breathtaking tale of heroism, love, devotion, and duty from the legendary author of the Richard Sharpe novels and the Saxon Tales.
Who is Jacob Printz? Is he detached and cynical or warm and melancholic? In Maryann D'Agincourt's striking novel, readers come to know Jacob through the eyes of Greta Hatler as the two travelers, separated by age and background, meet unexpectedly in the midst of their own personal sorrows in Paris. Impressions of Jacob rise to the surface through haunting memories of his younger sister, Catherine. As in much of D'Agincourt's fiction, a character's truth lies in his or her response to a work of art. A new preface situates the novel within the genre of art fiction.

Agincourt: A Romance【電子書籍】[ G. P. R. James ]

The night was as black as ink; not a solitary twinkling star looked out through that wide expanse of shadow, which our great Poet has called the "blanket of the dark;" clouds covered the heaven; the moon had not risen to tinge them even with grey, and the sun had too long set to leave one faint streak of purple upon the edge of the western sky. Trees, houses, villages, fields, and gardens, all lay in one profound obscurity, and even the course of the high-road itself required eyes well-accustomed to night-travelling to be able to distinguish it, as it wandered on through a rich part of Hampshire, amidst alternate woods and meadows. Yet at that murky hour, a traveller on horseback rode forward upon his way, at an easy pace, and with a light heart, if one might judge by the snatches of homely ballads that broke from his lips as he trotted on. These might, indeed, afford a fallacious indication of what was going on within the breast, and in his case they did so; for habit is more our master than we know, and often rules our external demeanour, whenever the spirit is called to take council in the deep chambers within, showing upon the surface, without any effort on our part to hide our thoughts, a very different aspect from that of the mind's business at the moment. Thus, then, the traveller who there rode along, saluting the ear of night with scraps of old songs, sung in a low, but melodious voice, was as thoughtful, if not as sad, as it was in his nature to be; but yet, as that nature was a cheerful one and all his habits were gay, no sooner were the eyes of the spirit called to the consideration of deeper things, than custom exercised her sway over the animal part, and he gave voice, as we have said, to the old ballads which had cheered his boyhood and his youth...

Henry V The Life of the Warrior King & the Battle of Agincourt【電子書籍】[ Teresa Cole ]
|

In the latter years of the fourteenth century a child was born, so unimportant that even his exact date of birth is unknown. Yet before his twenty-seventh birthday the turn of fortune’s wheel had brought him the crown of England. The kingdom he inherited as Henry V was deeply divided after the seizure of the throne by his father, Henry IV, the first Lancastrian king. Within a short time, however, by sheer force of personality and will, Henry had mended the rifts, pardoned and released prisoners, and united the whole country behind his claim not just to be King of England, but also King of France. One staggering victory against all the odds on the field of Agincourt brought him lasting fame, and took him within touching distance of succeeding in his claim. Henry V looks at the life and legacy of a king whose heroic achievements and tragic early death may truly be said to have changed the course of British history.

Agincourt Myth and Reality, 1415?2015【電子書籍】[ Stephen Cooper ]
|

The overwhelming victory of Henry V's English army at Agincourt in October 1415 has passed into myth as one of the defining events of the Hundred Years War against France, as a feat of arms outshining the previous famous English victories at Crcy and Poitiers, and as a milestone in English medieval history. This epic story of how an exhausted, outnumbered army, commanded by an inspirational leader, crushed a huge French force on French soil has given rise to legends and misconceptions that make it difficult for us to reach a clear understanding of what really happened on the battlefield 600 years ago. But that is what Stephen Cooper attempts in this thoroughgoing, perceptive and fascinating reconstruction and reassessment of the battle and its history. In graphic detail he describes the battle itself and the military expedition that led to it. He examines the causes of the conflict and the controversies associated with it, and traces how the story of the battle has been told over the centuries, by eyewitnesses and chroniclers and by the historians of the present day.As featured in the Yorkshire Post, The Star (Sheffield) and Rotherham Advertiser.

The Battle of Agincourt: Sources and Interpretations【電子書籍】[ Anne Curry ]

Accessible collections of primary sources covering the Hundred Years War are still remarkably few and far between, and teachers of the subject will find Curry's volume a valuable addition to their bibliographies and teaching aids.FRENCH HISTORY

"Agincourt! Agincourt! Know ye not Agincourt?" So began a ballad of around 1600. Since the event itself [25 October 1415], the great military engagement has occupied a special place in both English andFrench consciousness, respectively as either one of the greatest military successes ever, or as the "accursed day". Much ink has been spilt on the battle but do we really know Agincourt? Not since Harris Nicolas's History of the Battle of Agincourt (1827-33) has there been a full attempt to survey the sources until now: this book brings together, in translation and with commentary, English and French narrative accounts and literary works of the fifteenth century. It also traces the treatment of the battle in sixteenth-century English histories and in the literary representations of, amongst others, Shakespeare and Drayton. After examining how later historians interpreted the battle, it concludes with the first full assessment of the extremely rich administrative records which survive for the armies which fought "upon Saint Crispin's day".

ANNE CURRY is Professor of Medieval Historyat the University of Southampton.

CONTENTS Twenty-six chronicle sources, English and French
Accounts from six sixteenth-century English historians
Twenty-one records of contemporary reception of the battle, and the development of the literary tradition, in England and France
Summaries of interpretations from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries
Excerpts from eighteen administrative records relating to the Englishand French armies

The Agincourt War A Military History of the Hundred Years War from 1369 to 1453【電子書籍】[ Alfred H. Burne ]
|

Henry V's stunning victory at Agincourt was a pivotal battle of the Hundred Years War, reviving England's military fortunes and changing forever the course of European warfare.??In this exciting and readable account Colonel Burne recreates the years leading up to Agincourt and its bitter aftermath. He also puts the battle in the perspective of the other important, yet less well known, engagements of the war such as the battles of Verneuil and Fresnay. As with the battles, so with its commanders: Henry V is known to all, but Colonel Burne gives rightful honour to Talbot, Salisbury, Bedford, Chandos and many others. On the French side he details the parts played by Bertrand du Gueschlin and of course Joan of Arc.??Colonel Burne's outstanding reconstruction of the war is written for layman and historian alike and conveys the drama that Agincourt and its heroes have always so vividly evoked. This new edition of a classic text includes a new introduction by Anne Curry, the world's leading authority on the battle of Agincourt.

Philosophy. Sociology. Political Science. Translated by Thomas Haskell Simpson. A philosophical investigation into freedom as reality's point of origin, the metaphysical quality of being. The main thesis of this essay is anchored in a re-evaluation of Luigi Pareyson's reflections on the ontology of freedom. To the Italian philosopher are dedicated the first and fourth chapter, the latter focusing on his ideas on the genesis of evil. The second and third chapter use current scientific knowledge to retrace the presence of freedom at the birth of the universe and during its evolution (chapter 2), as well as in the world of biology (chapter 3). The sixth and final chapter, through an analysis of episodes taken from the Pentateuch (Moses, Abraham, Eden), reconstructs the idea of freedom as it emerges from the Bible.

Agincourt Henry V and the Battle That Made England【電子書籍】[ Juliet Barker ]

The renowned historian "brings an excellent synergy of academic and literary skills to this study" of the medieval battle that defined the British empire ( Publishers Weekly , starred review).
In 1415, King Henry V of England led a severely outnumbered army to victory against the French in what became a defining moment in the Hundred Years War. It is the classic underdog story in the history of warfare, and generations have wondered how the English could have succeeded so bravely and brilliantly.
Drawing upon a wide range of sources, eminent scholar Juliet Barker casts aside the legend and shows us that the truth behind Agincourt is just as fascinating, and far more significant. She presents a gripping narrative of the October 1415 clash between outnumbered English archers and heavily armored French knights. But she also takes us beyond the battlefield to explore an entire medieval world in flux.

Populated with chivalrous heroes, dastardly spies, and a ferocious and bold king, Agincourt is as earthshaking as its subjectーand confirms Juliet Barker's status as both a historian and a storyteller of the first rank.

Despite its importance, the battle is largely overlooked in accounts of the Hundred Years War. The Battle of Verneuil 1424 is the first proper account of the battle, and is also one of the first books to outline the important part the Scots played in the wars in France in the years between the two great battles of Agincourt and Verneuil.

Maryann D'Agincourt's Midsummer explores four lives that intersect in unexpected ways as each character's past is reflected in the choices they make in the present.

A gripping fictionalized account of the landmark battle that turned the tide of history.

On October 25, 1415, a trapped and vastly outnumbered force of exhausted and demoralized English archers and men-at-arms faced a colossal army of French knights on a desolate field in northern France. What took place that day became one of the greatest moments of the Hundred Years' War and English history.

Based on chronicles of the times, Agincourt 1415: Field of Blood is a dramatic, minute-by-minute retelling of the battle as seen through the eyes of the commanders and soldiers on both sides. This is a brutal, bloody, and captivating retelling of a major British victory written by a Pulitzer Prize finalist. This work sets a new standard for historical fiction.

"If you look for a book to read on a chair next to the fireplace holding a glass of whiskey, this book is highly recommendable." ー Historic Battlefield Tours
