Empires of the Sky Zeppelins, Airplanes, and Two Men's Epic Duel to Rule the World【電子書籍】[ Alexander Rose ]
|

The Golden Age of Aviation is brought to life in this story of the giant Zeppelin airships that once roamed the skyーa story that ended with the fiery destruction of the Hindenburg.

“Genius . . . a definitive tale of an incredible time when mere mortals learned to fly.”ーKeith O’Brien, The New York Times

At the dawn of the twentieth century, when human flight was still considered an impossibility, Germany’s Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin vied with the Wright Brothers to build the world’s first successful flying machine. As the Wrights labored to invent the airplane, Zeppelin fathered the remarkable airship, sparking a bitter rivalry between the two types of aircraft and their innovators that would last for decades, in the quest to control one of humanity’s most inspiring achievements.

And it was the airshipーnot the airplaneーthat led the way. In the glittery 1920s, the count’s brilliant prot?g?, Hugo Eckener, achieved undreamed-of feats of daring and skill, including the extraordinary Round-the-World voyage of the Graf Zeppelin. At a time when America’s airplanesーrickety deathtraps held together by glue, screws, and luckーcould barely make it from New York to Washington, D.C., Eckener’s airships serenely traversed oceans without a single crash, fatality, or injury. What Charles Lindbergh almost died doingーcrossing the Atlantic in 1927ーEckener had effortlessly accomplished three years before the Spirit of St. Louis even took off.

Even as the Nazis sought to exploit Zeppelins for their own nefarious purposes, Eckener built his masterwork, the behemoth Hindenburgーa marvel of design and engineering. Determined to forge an airline empire under the new flagship, Eckener met his match in Juan Trippe, the ruthlessly ambitious king of Pan American Airways, who believed his fleet of next-generation planes would vanquish Eckener’s coming airship armada.

It was a fight only one manーand one technologyーcould win. Countering each other’s moves on the global chessboard, each seeking to wrest the advantage from his rival, the struggle for mastery of the air was a clash not only of technologies but of business, diplomacy, politics, personalities, and the two men’s vastly different dreams of the future.

Empires of the Sky is the sweeping, untold tale of the duel that transfixed the world and helped create our modern age.

Advanced Aircraft Design Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes【電子書籍】[ Egbert Torenbeek ]
|

Although the overall appearance of modern airliners has not changed a lot since the introduction of jetliners in the 1950s, their safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness have improved considerably. Main contributors to this have been gas turbine engine technology, advanced materials, computational aerodynamics, advanced structural analysis and on-board systems. Since aircraft design became a highly multidisciplinary activity, the development of multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) has become a popular new discipline. Despite this, the application of MDO during the conceptual design phase is not yet widespread.

Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes presents a quasi-analytical optimization approach based on a concise set of sizing equations. Objectives are aerodynamic efficiency, mission fuel, empty weight and maximum takeoff weight. Independent design variables studied include design cruise altitude, wing area and span and thrust or power loading. Principal features of integrated concepts such as the blended wing and body and highly non-planar wings are also covered.

The quasi-analytical approach enables designers to compare the results of high-fidelity MDO optimization with lower-fidelity methods which need far less computational effort. Another advantage to this approach is that it can provide answers to “what if” questions rapidly and with little computational cost.

Key features:

Presents a new fundamental vision on conceptual airplane design optimization

Provides an overview of advanced technologies for propulsion and reducing aerodynamic drag

Offers insight into the derivation of design sensitivity information

Emphasizes design based on first principles

Considers pros and cons of innovative configurations

Reconsiders optimum cruise performance at transonic Mach numbers

Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes advances understanding of the initial optimization of civil airplanes and is a must-have reference for aerospace engineering students, applied researchers, aircraft design engineers and analysts.

The United States Army Air Arm: April 1861 to April 1917, Wright Brothers, Curtiss and Burgess Airplanes, Air Fatalities, Balloons, Airships, Early Planes, Signal Corps, Aviation School【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]
|

This important official monograph recounts the development of aviation in the United States Army from April 1861, when the Army first became interested in balloons as a means of observation, to April 1917, when America entered World War I. The origins and organizations of the Army's air arm are told in detail, with particular emphasis on early air force personnel, planes, and experiments. In the process the monograph traces the early development of what today is The United States Air Force. Of necessity, the monograph tends strongly toward the chronological variety. This is owing to several factors, the thinness of aviation activities for most of the long period covered and an equal thinness in records being the principal factors. Only a few books which deal with this early period of Army aviation have been written, and all of them together do not cover the period. This, then, is the first attempt to put the story into a single volume. Because the story of the air arm from April 1917 to the beginning of World War II also has not been fully covered it is expected that the present monograph will be the first of three, which, when completed, will become the basis for a published history of the Army Air Arm, 1861-1939.

Chapter I - Balloons and Airships in the United States Army, 1861-1913 * Chapter II - Early American Planes and Their Inventors * Chapter III - The Signal Corps' First Air Installations and First Military Aviator Rating * Chapter IV - College Park and Other Air Schools, 1912-1913 * Chapter V - Signal Corps Aviation School at San Diego, 1913 to July 1914 * Chapter VI - Aviation Legislation, and the Aviation Section Through 1914 * Chapter VII - Aviation in 1915 and 1916 * Chapter VIII - The Aviation Section in 1916 * Chapter IX - The 1st Squadron with Pershing's Punitive Expedition, 1916 * Chapter X - Army Flying Training Schools, The National Guard, and The Air Reserve * Chapter XI - The Aviation Section to 6 April 1917

Chapter I * Balloons and Airships in the United States Army, 1861-1913 * Balloons in the Civil War The Spanish-American War Balloon * Ballooning in the United States Army, 1902-1914 * Chapter II * Early American Planes and Their Inventors * The Langley Plane * The Wright Brothers' Plane * Other Early Airplanes and Inventors * Chapter III * The Signal Corps' First Air Installations and First Military Aviator Rating * Fort Sam Houston, 1910-1911 * College Park, 1911 * Winter School at Augusta, Georgia, 1911-1912 * "Military Aviator" Rating * Chapter IV * College Park and Other Air Schools, 1912-1913 * College Park * The Augusta Air School, 1912-1913 * The Texas City Air School, 1913 * Overseas Air Schools: Philippines and Hawaii * Chapter V * Signal Corps Aviation School at San Diego, 1913 to July 1914 * Chapter VI * Aviation Legislation, and the Aviation Section Through 1914 * Legislative Action * The Aviation Section * Airplanes Purchased by the Signal Corps in 1914 * The San Diego School * Chapter VII * Aviation in 1915 and 1916 * The Aviation Section in 1915 * The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics * The Aero Club of America and the National Guard in 1915-1916 * The First Aero Company of the National Guard in 1915-1916 * The Status of the American Aviation Industry in 1915 * Pyrotechnics Tested * Airplanes Accepted and Tested in 1915 * The San Diego School * The 1st Aero Squadron * San Antonio Air Center * The Philippine Squadron and Others ー 1915 and 1916 * Chapter VIII * The Aviation Section in 1916 * Air Legislation * The Aviation Section * San Diego Developments * The Aviation Center at Fort Sam Houston * Reserve Corps Expansion * Balloons and Zeppelins * Division of Authority * Summary * Chapter IX * The 1st Squadron with Pershing's Punitive Expedition, 1916 * Chapter X * Army Flying Training Schools, The National Guard, and The Air Reserve * Army Flying Training Schools * The Flying School Program, April 1917

The Rarified Air of the Modern Airplanes and Technological Modernity in the Andes【電子書籍】[ Willie Hiatt ]
|

From the moment news reached Peru in 1910 that Jorge Ch?vez Dartnell, a pilot of Peruvian parentage, had become the first man to fly across the Alps, aviation fired the imagination of the masses in his home country. His and other Peruvian pilots' achievements generated great optimism that this technology could lift Peru out of its self-perceived backwardness and transform it into a modern nation. Though poor infrastructure, economic woes, a dearth of technical expertise, and frequent pilot deaths slowed Peru's domestic aviation project, diverse groups saw in airplanes their own visions for Peruvian renewal. In this book, Willie Hiatt shows how politicians, businessmen, and military officials promoted the project as critical to the nation. At the same time, indigenous communities and provincial residents willingly gave up land for airfields, raised money to purchase aircraft for the military, named airplanes after sponsoring civic groups, towns, and regions, and breached police cordons at flying exhibitions to get close-up looks at planes and pilots. By 1928, three commercial lines were transporting passengers and goods from far-flung regions of the Amazon, highlands, and coast to Lima and beyond. Tracing the development of Peruvian aviation from heroic individual feats to essential infrastructure, The Rarified Air of the Modern shows how Peruvians mobilized airplanes to reflect their technological progress, their modern identity, and their nation's intertwining with the history of the West.

Many pilots resign themselves to imperfect takeoffs and landings merely because they're unaware that even the pros must work at each of these critical phases of flight. This book shows pilots how to develop total awareness for the situation, the airplane, and the selfーand to convert that awareness into perfect takeoffs and landings.

This book will teach new students safe and proper techniques as well as provide tips for refreshing experienced pilots who may not fly on a regular basis.
The detailed yet easy-to-follow steps given here ensure pilots have the knowledge they need to go beyond rote-learned reactions and develop excellent flying skills. Each chapter defines a specific takeoff or landing situation and the set of characteristics unique to it. Author Ron Fowler presents the methodsーand the logic behind the methodsーthat allow the pilot to master techniques key to normal takeoffs and landings, crosswind procedures, short- and soft-field operations, night procedures, tailwheel operations, and more.

Originally published as two separate books, this newly-combined edition now brings together comprehensive instruction on going up and coming back down.
Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this Air Force publication provides a guide to the research and technical literature on the history of aeronautics and astronautics. It is meant to provide readers with a guide to the vast collections of books and articles available today in libraries and from publishers.

General Reference Sources * The Prehistory of Flight, Antiquity to 1783 * The Era of Discovery, 1783-1903 * The Development of Practical Airplanes, 1903-1918 * The Rise of Air Transportation and Professionalism, 1918-1936 * The Ascendency of the Propeller-Driven Airplane, 1936-1945 * The Turbojet Revolution and the Supersonic Breakthrough, 1945-1957 * The Space Age and the Maturation of Aeronautics, 1957-1982

Since its inception in 1982, Project Warrior has revived interest inside the Air Force in using history to sharpen professional knowledge of air power. Project Warrior has also expanded interest in the heritage of the U. S. Air Force in peace and in war. The bibliographical essay published here as The Literature of Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Air Power is meant to provide readers with a guide to the vast collections of books and articles available today in libraries and from publishers. It was written originally in early 1982 by Dr. Richard P. Hallion as a Project Warrior monograph at the Air Force Systems Command's Edwards Flight Test Center, California. Drawing on his experience as an author, a curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, and as a history professor at the University of Maryland, Dr. Hallion recognized the need of scientists and engineers for a guide to the research and technical literature on the history of aeronautics and astronautics. Publication here of a revised, reorganized, and expanded version reflects our belief that what was so valuable to the flight test community will, in different form, be of similar use to the rest of the Air Force, to civilian scholars, and to aviation enthusiasts generally. Dr. Hallion's essay, while revised in size, scope, and emphasis, retains the flavor of its original purpose and reflects the author's interests, background, and professional judgments. In part, the essay also reflects suggestions made by the editors, especially on the growth and development of air power in the twentieth century.

The number of airplane flights worldwide continues to grow and is one of the many drivers of climate change. This book examines the aviation industry from an anthropological perspective, focusing on the sector’s environmental impact and the challenges facing attempts to shift to more sustainable solutions. Hans Baer outlines how airplanes have become a key component of modern cultural and social life, and how the world system has become increasingly dependent on them to function. He critically examines current efforts to mitigate the climatic impact of the air travel and argues for a significant move away from air transport, suggesting that such a shift may only be achieved through a more fundamental change in the world system.

Crafting Flight: Aircraft Pioneers and the Contributions of the Men and Women of NASA Langley Research Center - NACA Aviation History, Apollo Moon Landing, Viking Mars, Jet Airplanes, Wind Tunnels【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this exceptional book provides a great history of NASA Langley Research Center's contributions to aviation and spaceflight. You will read about one of the Nation's oldest research and development facilities, a place of imagination and ingenuity. If this is your first "visit," you will surely find many surprises. If you are a veteran, the pictures and text will evoke many memories.

Chapter 1 - Craving Flight * Chapter 2 - A Laboratory for Flight * Chapter 3 - Refining the Airplane * Chapter 4 - Swords and Plowshares * Chapter 5 - Beyond the Home Planet * Chapter 6 - Expertise Applied * Chapter 7 - Redefining Roles * Chapter 8 - Beyond the First One Hundred Years

One hundred years of flight is quite a historical achievement. We have progressed from a 57-second flight over the dunes of Kitty Hawk to the over 25-year journeys of Voyager 1 and 2 beyond Pluto's orbit. During that time span, in perhaps the most awe-inspiring aerospace accomplishment after Wilbur and Orville Wright's historic flight, the first humans, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, flew to the Moon. Sixty-six years after the flight at Kitty Hawk, people all across our home planet Earth paused to watch on television as American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped out of the Lunar Lander onto the surface of the Moon.

As we pause to celebrate the centennial of flight from our perspective in the early part of the twenty-first century, we can look back over the countless contributions of many individuals to flight. The first person who looked to the sky, observed birds in flight, and dreamed of humans soaring through the air is lost in history. Recounted in these pages are the stories of a few aviation pioneers and the contributions of the men and women of Langley Research Center. We celebrate not only their accomplishments, but also their perseverance and dedication.

A Congressional mandate issued in 1915 formed the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). In 1958, Congress mandated the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from the NACA. Both the NACA and NASA were created in response to the need for the united States to catch up to existing technological advances. Although the United States was the birthplace of controlled, powered flight, by World War I, we were technologically far behind Germany, France, and Great Britain. The NACA was created to study the problems of flight "with a view to their practical solution." In 1958 when the former Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, the United States again found itself behind technologically, Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Act of 1958 "to provide for research into problems of flight within and outside the Earth's atmosphere."

Postcard Tales Short Stories from Truth to Spoof About Airplanes, Animals, And Kids【電子書籍】[ Rory A. Hansen ]
|

The initial inspiration for this book of short stories started from stories I would write on the back of postcards. The postcard pictures would provide a launching point for an imaginative tale. A story seemed like a more fun way to send a greeting than just saying, "Having a good time, wish you were here!" There's not much room on the back of a postcard, so I would write as small as possible and use every square millimeter of space. On later travels, I would bring along a little notebook and use writer's license to create a little color to my adventures. However, sometimes my adventures were enough of an adventure to just tell the story as it happened. This book is a compilation of entertaining stories from real life to animal life to a "bit" of imagination. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Military Aviation: Fascinating Preview of Aviation Concepts by an Early Visionary Before the Wright Brothers First Flight - Ideas from Birds, War Fighting Strategy, Naval Airplanes, Runways and Bases【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]
|

This book ー the first English translation of Cl?ment Ader's L'Aviation militaire ー contains Ader's ideas about flight formed in the last decade of the nineteenth century, arranged in manuscript form by Ader in 1907, and published in 1909 in Paris by Berger-Levrault. The text is reproduced in its entirety, including notes added by Ader and explanatory notes and a bibliographical note by the editor and translator, Lee Kennett. Ader explains his ideas about the development of airplanes based on creatures in nature. He studied the bat and the bird, especially the vulture. Chapters detail the design of bases for aircraft, runway construction, naval airplanes, vertical artillery, air lanes, schools of aviation, and strategy for waging war in the air. Ader envisioned all of this a decade before the Wright brothers first flew.

Contents * Bibliographical Note * Foreword * About Clement Ader, 1841-1925 * The Original Book * Introduction * Letters Cited in the Introduction * Note No. 1, Airplanes * Note No. 2, Bases * Note No. 3, Naval Airplanes * Note No. 4, Vertical Artillery * Note No. 5, Air Lanes * Note No. 6, Schools of Aviation and Airplane Design and Construction * Note No. 7, Air Strategy

When the names of pioneers of human flight are evoked, that of Clement Ader does not spring immediately to mind. The reasons are various: he was reticent, even secretive, about his work; what he wrote and what was written about him were rarely translated into English; then like his contemporary and fellow countryman Louis Mouillard, he believed nature held the key to human flight: a flying machine should take as its model a flying creature. If pursued too far, effort in this direction generally led to failure, and ultimately to ridicule for those who persisted in it. Even today it is hard to resist a smile when reading a description of Ader's "glider" of the 1870s, with its birdlike silhouette and its wings covered with thousands of goose feathers.

But Ader also followed another path, one where he was virtually alone in the last decade of the nineteenth century: even before the first warplane took to the air, he composed a remarkable treatise on military aircraft and their use, and on that broader concept we have come to call airpower. Like his aircraft designs, his L'Aviation militaire may provoke smiles from time to time, but it also stirs admiration for the remarkable gift of prescience its author often displayed.

The book appeared in successive editions, growing larger and more technical as its author incorporated various developments in aviation. But the first edition remains the most remarkable and the most evocative. That slim volume, offered here in English translation, contains ideas formed for the most part in the last decade of the nineteenth century, arranged in final form by the author in 1907, and published in 1909 by the Paris publisher Berger-Levrault. Since there is no biography of Ader in English, a brief outline of his life is offered here by way of introduction.

Electric Airplanes and Drones A History【電子書籍】[ Kevin Desmond ]

Attempts at electric powered flight date to well before the 19th century. Battery weight and low energy output made it impractical until the 1990s, when the advent of lightweight materials, more efficient solar power, improved engines and the Li-Po (lithium polymer) battery opened the skies to a wide variety of electric aircraft.

The author describes the diverse designs of modern electric flying machines--from tiny insect-styled drones to stratospheric airships--and explores developing trends, including flying cars and passenger airliners.

Rattlesnakes, Airplanes and Gold One family's wilderness journey in search of adventure and fortune【電子書籍】[ Douglas Lowell Jack ]
|

This book begins with the story of how one American family found their own way into being part of the national pre-occupation with Soviet aggression during the 1950s. They acquired their own bomb-shelter in the form of a 1500-foot long underground tunnel. This tunnel was bored into a mountainside in central Nevada USA for the purpose of mining radio-active Uranium ore. The general idea was that everyone went underground before a nuclear attack. After some time went by, they would then all emerge out into the bright sunshine; start everything back up again; put the coffee on and life would be good...minus the evil Soviet Union!

There were so many deadly rattlesnakes in the area, they even considered sending a few of them in to the authorities along with the Uranium orders, just to liven things up a bit! Maybe just the threat of dropping a whole bomb-load of angry rattlesnakes on the Russians would have been enough! Who knows!

Before this Nevada adventure they had been gold mining in the snow-filled, rugged mountains of Idaho State. This saga also included, at one point, having to be rescued by the US Airforce! Even before all of that occurred, the head of the family had spent 10 years in Alaska as a mining man and a bush pilot. The whole chapter of his Alaskan arctic adventures reads almost like something out of an Errol Flynn movie! The family then moved to the isolated and remote interior of British Columbia, Canada, where a whole new endeavour in placer- gold mining and pioneer living, was begun. Airplanes and bush pilots became a big part of those stories, as well!

This book was written by the oldest son of the family and contains first-hand, exciting, informative and entertaining glimpses into a way of life in North America that is rapidly disappearing. Hopefully, for the older readers, these stories will surely bring back vibrant memories of their own past adventures and for the younger readers, this book will be a call to action to find and live their own dreams.

Through it all, this family definitely had their share of:
Rattlesnakes, Airplanes and Gold

Air National Guard (ANG) Structure for the Twenty-first Century: The Multimission Framework for Total Force Integration - ANG History and Culture, Why Does the Governor Need Fighter Airplanes【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]
|

This report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. Since the Vietnam War, much has changed with regard to the Total Force and the structure of the Department of Defense. The Air National Guard, in particular, began many transformational programs designed to better enhance its mission capabilities for both state and federal missions. In fact, the Air National Guard evolved into an operational reserve necessary to successfully fight the nation's wars. Ultimately, the strength of the Air National Guard is built upon its greatest asset: its people. With people at the center of the equation, is there a best organizational construct in which to form an Air National Guard unit? If so, what might that unit look like? If not, might there be certain traits which resonate successfully within all the models? With these research questions in hand, the author began a quest for resolution on the optimum Guard organizational construct.

When a researcher pursues new subject matter, there is the possibility that the research results may be significantly different than expected. In this case, through a myriad of senior officer interviews, multiple model case studies, an expansive literature review, and a thorough review of the challenges in new units, the research indicated that there is almost no limit to the number of successful types of Total Force Integration models. However, what the research did demonstrate was the importance of certain core threads necessary for any models to both survive and thrive. Because of these core threads, this study recommends a common framework for the way ahead for future integration efforts, which shall be presented as the "Multimission Framework for Total Force Integration."
Within the discussion, it became necessary to examine the historical chronology of Total Force Integration as well as Air National Guard history and culture. A thorough examination of cultural artifacts and challenges leads to the proverbial question of why a governor needs fighters. US Air Force core competencies remind us of the need for Guard members to be proficient in the same missions as their active duty peers. However, Guard personnel also have a dual-mission nature due to state and federal laws. A brief look at US Code, Articles 10 and 32, demonstrates the key differences by law and clarifies the common misconceptions in this statutory guidance. With the groundwork laid, the study examines all current major integration models in vogue: the Guard Reserve/Active Associate Wing, the Blended Wing, and the Integrated Wing. Through careful examination of the strengths and weaknesses behind each model, a Multimission Framework is proposed as the way ahead.

This year's report covers activities that took place from October 1, 2015, through September 30, 2016. Please note that these activities reflect the Federal policies of that time and do not include subsequent events or changes in policy.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration * Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate * Science Mission Directorate * Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate * Space Technology Mission Directorate * Department of Defense * Federal Aviation Administration * Department of Commerce * Department of the Interior * Federal Communications Commission * U S Department of Agriculture * National Science Foundation * Department of State * Department of Energy * Smithsonian Institution

NASA launched a Translational Research Institute charged with researching and developing innovative approaches to reducing risks to humans during long-duration exploration missions, including NASA's Journey to Mars. The Center for Space Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine was awarded a grant to develop and implement this institute, which includes the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as partners. Translational research is an interdisciplinary model of research that focuses on rapidly translating fundamental research concepts into practice, thereby generating tangible health outcomesーin this case, for astronauts. This new institute will expand research leadership in translational human performance, biomedical, environmental, cognitive, and behavioral science. It will also catalyze greater involvement of the broader science community in accomplishing the Agency's human exploration goals. Results or methods derived from laboratory experiments or clinical trials will be translated to point-of-care astronaut health and performance applications, using a bench-to-spaceflight model. In this way, the institute will rapidly produce promising new approaches, treatments, countermeasures, or technologies that have practical applications for spaceflight. The Translational Research Institute is a key component of NASA's strategy for reducing human exploration health and performance risks for the next generation of space exploration.
