Killed Strangely The Death of Rebecca Cornell【電子書籍】[ Elaine Forman Crane ]

Killed Strangely is an engaging read that will entrance and inform readers who are at once murder mystery and history buffs.ー Cornelia Hughes Dayton ー Common-Place

"It was Rebecca's son, Thomas, who first realized the victim's identity. His eyes were drawn to the victim's head, and aided by the flickering light of a candle, he 'clapt his hands and cryed out, Oh Lord, it is my mother.' James Moills, a servant of Cornell... described Rebecca 'lying on the floore, with fire about Her, from her Lower parts neare to the Armepits.' He recognized her only 'by her shoes.'"ーfrom Killed Strangely

On a winter's evening in 1673, tragedy descended on the respectable Rhode Island household of Thomas Cornell. His 73-year-old mother, Rebecca, was found close to her bedroom's large fireplace, dead and badly burned. The legal owner of the Cornells' hundred acres along Narragansett Bay, Rebecca shared her home with Thomas and his family, a servant, and a lodger. A coroner's panel initially declared her death "an Unhappie Accident," but before summer arrived, a dark web of eventsーrumors of domestic abuse, allusions to witchcraft, even the testimony of Rebecca's ghost through her brotherーresulted in Thomas's trial for matricide.

Such were the ambiguities of the case that others would be tried for the murder as well. Rebecca is a direct ancestor of Cornell University's founder, Ezra Cornell. Elaine Forman Crane tells the compelling story of Rebecca's death and its aftermath, vividly depicting the world in which she lived. That world included a legal system where jurors were expected to be familiar with the defendant and case before the trial even began. Rebecca's strange death was an event of cataclysmic proportions, affecting not only her own community, but neighboring towns as well.

The documents from Thomas's trial provide a rare glimpse into seventeenth-century life. Crane writes, "Instead of the harmony and respect that sermon literature, laws, and a hierarchical/patriarchal society attempted to impose, evidence illustrates filial insolence, generational conflict, disrespect toward the elderly, power plays between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, [and] adult dependence on (and resentment of) aging parents who clung to purse strings." Yet even at a distance of more than three hundred years, Rebecca Cornell's story is poignantly familiar. Her complaints of domestic abuse, Crane says, went largely unheeded by friends and neighbors until, at last, their complacency was shattered by her terrible death.

DRIFTWOOD SPARS The Stories of a Man, a Boy, a Woman, and Certain Other People Who Strangely Met Upon the Sea of Life【電子書籍】[ P. C. Wren ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "DRIFTWOOD SPARS - The Stories of a Man, a Boy, a Woman, and Certain Other People Who Strangely Met Upon the Sea of Life" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Driftwood Spars is one of the early novels of P. C. Wren. First part of the novel is mainly concerning the early life of, John Robin Ross-Ellison, commander of Foreign Legion troops. Second part is covering the early life of Moussa Isa Somali, proud and brave young boy. Further on their paths are crossing along with many other characters in the deserts of North Africa. Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion. The descriptions of Legion garrison life given in his work The Wages of Virtue, written in 1914, closely match those contained in the autobiographical In the Foreign Legion by ex-legionnaire Edwin Rosen.

Picasso, Modigliani, and a Blind Art Collector Named Leon Angely Illustrated by Picasso's Model and Muse, Sylvette David【電子書籍】[ Rob Couteau ]

In the early years of the twentieth century, a retired legal clerk in Montmartre named Leon Angely collected Picassos, Modiglianis, and Utrillos before any of these artists were well known. And he purchased many of these creations after his failing vision left him almost completely blind. Legend has it that L?on was assisted by a young girl who served as his "eyes," and based on her description of the work he would make his selections. This homage to the 'blind man who was crazy for color' uncovers previously unknown information about this important yet largely forgotten figure who inspired one of Picasso's most powerful engravings, featuring a 'Blind Minotaur' being led by a little girl. The book is illustrated with original artwork by Picasso's model and muse, Sylvette David, who posed for the painter when she was only nineteen years old, in 1954. Now eighty-seven, Sylvette credits Picasso with inspiring her to devote her life to painting. Her work is frequently exhibited in Europe, and in 2021 she was invited to lecture at the Mus?e Picasso is Paris. Includes 16 black-and-white and 25 color illustrations.

Growth and Transport in Nanostructured Materials Reactive Transport in PVD, CVD, and ALD【電子書籍】[ Angel Yanguas-Gil ]

This book will address the application of gas phase thin film methods, including techniques such as evaporation, sputtering, CVD, and ALD to the synthesis of materials on nanostructured and high aspect-ratio high surface area materials. We have chosen to introduce these topics and the different application fields from a chronological perspective: we start with the early concepts of step coverage and later conformality in semiconductor manufacturing, and how later on the range of application branched out to include others such as energy storage, catalysis, and more broadly nanomaterials synthesis.

The book will describe the ballistic and continuum descriptions of gas transport on nanostructured materials and then will move on to incorporate the impact of precursor-surface interaction. We will finally conclude approaching the subjects of feature shape evolution and the connection between nano and reactor scales and will briefly present different advanced algorithms that can beused to effectively compute particle transport, in some cases borrowing from other disciplines such as radiative heat transfer. The book gathers in a single place information scattered over thirty years of scientific research, including the most recent results in the field of Atomic Layer Deposition. Besides a mathematical description of the fundamentals of thin film growth in nanostructured materials, it includes analytic expressions and plots that can be used to predict the growth using gas phase synthesis methods in a number of ideal approximations. The focus on the fundamental aspects over particular processes will broaden the appeal and the shelf lifetime of this book. The reader of this book will gain a thorough understanding on the coating of high surface area and nanostructured materials using gas phase thin film deposition methods, including the limitations of each technique. Those coming from the theoretical side will gain the knowledge required to model the growth process, while those readers more interested in the process development will gain the theoretical understanding will be useful for process optimization.

Politics Strangely Warmed Political Theology in the Wesleyan Spirit【電子書籍】[ Gregory R. Coates ]

For centuries, Christians have wrestled with how to witness faithfully to the peaceable kingdom of God, while also living as citizens within an earthly nation-state. Differing theological traditions have offered wide-ranging contributions to the field of political theology, yet the Wesleyan tradition has too often remained largely silent. In this volume, Coates turns to two key figures within his own Wesleyan tradition--John Wesley and B. T. Roberts--in order to construct a distinctively Wesleyan political theology. He argues that embedded within Wesley's theology were the seeds of a radically people-centered, egalitarian politic, despite the fact that Wesley himself never fully realized these implications himself. Ultimately, however, the populism of B. T. Roberts and his work to organize the Farmer's Alliance of the late-nineteenth century would come to represent one concrete, historical manifestation of Wesley's theology in the public sphere. Here is a book not merely for academics interested in the Wesleyan tradition or political theology, but also for all followers of Christ who desire to see the church model the ethic of Christ before the worldly powers in the midst of this saeculum.

Driftwood Spars: The Stories of A Man, A Boy, A Woman and Certain Other People Who Strangely Met Upon the Sea of Life【電子書籍】[ Percival Christopher Wren ]

Truth is stranger than fiction, and many of the coincidences of real life are truly stranger than the most daring imaginings of the fictionist. Now, I, Major Michael Malet-Marsac, happened at the moment to be thinking of my dear and deeply lamented friend John Ross-Ellison, and to be pondering, for the thousandth time, his extraordinary life and more extraordinary death. Nor had I the very faintest notion that the Subedar-Major had ever heard of such a person, much less that he was actually his own brother, or, to be exact, his half-brother. You see I had known Ross-Ellison intimately as one only can know the man with whom one has worked, soldiered, suffered, and faced death. Not only had I known, admired and respected himーI had loved him. There is no other word for it; I loved him as a brother loves a brother, as a son loves his father, as the fighting-man loves the born leader of fighting-men: I loved him as Jonathan loved David. Indeed it was actually a case of "passing the love of women" for although he killed Cleopatra Dearman, the only woman for whom I ever cared, I fear I have forgiven him and almost forgotten her. But to return to the Subedar-Major. "Peace, fool! Art blind as Ibrahim Mahmud the Weeper," growled that burly Native Officer as the zealous and over-anxious young sentry cried out and pointed to where, in the moonlight, the returning reconnoitring-patrol was to be seen as it emerged from the lye-bushes of the dry river-bed.

Charlie the Purple Giraffe Was Acting Strangely【電子書籍】[ David D. Levine ]

Existential angst is tough enough when you’re human. When you’re a purple giraffe in a comic strip, you know you’re being watched, and none of your friends believe you, it’s even harder. A Locus Recommended Reading selection, “Charlie the Purple Giraffe Was Acting Strangely” also appeared in Year’s Best Fantasy #5.

“Charlie the Purple Giraffe Was Acting Strangely,” a short story, is also available as part of Space Magic, an award-winning collection of science fiction and fantasy stories by David D. Levine.

Praise for Charlie the Purple Giraffe Was Acting Strangely:

“There are plenty of cute touches, but the story turns oddly and effectively darker as none of the other characters believe Charlie. … Recommended.” ーLocus

“The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle in the late 50s and early 60s included a cast of characters and a narrator who were very much aware of their presence in a cartoon. David D. Levine creates comic book character Charles the Purple Giraffe in ‘Charles the Purple Giraffe Was Acting Strangely’ and allows him the same type of self-awareness. Unlike Bullwinkle, however, Charles is the only one in his world aware of the reader, with a resulting existential crisis. Although the story would appear to have humor, it really doesn’t beyond the humor of the absurd. Given the plays of Samuel Beckett, perhaps the humor of the absurd is the only kind of humor which can really encapsulate existential quandaries.” ーTangent Online

This first collection of 112 passionate, raw, thought-provoking poems is just a small selection from the library that the brilliant, brutally honest and prolific poet James Barrett Rodehaver has written in his lifetime. His words illustrate absolute fearlessness in self-discovery, his journey to find faith, and his relentless championing of hope for a better country and world. His poems span a wide chronology of growth and self-evolution, of despair and victory, of his hatred for injustice and his love of artists and poets. As a member of the LGBT community, he makes sure his readers know where he stands on equality and love. As a disabled man with a rare progressive bone disease, he uniquely understands the pain we all go through on our journey, and that poetry is how all of us can turn pain into triumph. He chronicles his sufferings, his hopeful outlook, and his questions to God about why he is the way he is, with poetry that renders the soul bare. He is a survivor of not only a disability and near-death, but of family crisis and the foster care system. Yet despite all of this, his world view, though bitter at times, still remains that of a dreamer. He presents to us many faces, and yet, all of them are one: the revolutionary, the fighter, the witty and hilarious dirty-minded poet, and the sensual lover. His poetry shows us his true soul, and this impressive collection of his lets us in on a man of kindness, integrity and conscience. It is as much yours as it is his, and he has put his full heart and soul into every page. Read it, share it, cherish it, and know that you, as well, are strangely wonderful!

Be Centered in Christ and Not in Self The Missionary Society of Saint Columban: the North American Story (1918?2018)【電子書籍】[ Angelyn Dries ]

The story of the one hundred years (19182018) of the Missionary Society of St. Columban is filled with adventure, stress, and danger, with the humdrum of daily life, with martyrs (twenty-seven of them thus far, including Columban Sister Joan Sawyer), with innumerable personal and society global connections and issues, with men who went from the familiarity of daily life and people they knew to lands and people unknown to bring the good news. The story is charged with humor and courage, along with faith, hope, and love. The people in this story lived within particular national histories and an evolving global Christianity. The history of the US region of the Missionary Society of St. Columban interacts with movements of Catholic and American history. These contexts influenced the ability of the Columbans to grow in the United States, to provide desperately needed resources for the missions, and to further Catholic engagement in the mission.

Why Does My Grandfather, Charles Darwin, Act So Strangely? As Told by Bernard Darwin【電子書籍】[ Les Landrum ]

“Why does my Grandfather, Charles Darwin, act so strangely?” asks Bernard Darwin. He notices that Baba, his grandfather, does strange things like make faces in the mirror, have pet earthworms, and daydream frequently. The cook and the gardener seem to find Mr. Darwin’s behavior worrisomeーmaybe he just needs something to keep himself busy. Bernard decides to find out why his grandfather acts so strangely. The story is fiction, but all the characters really lived and might have interacted as they do in the story (see annotated list of all characters at the end). It is a good introduction to the life of Charles Darwin for children of 8 or older but most adults, who may want to read the story with their children, will find out something they did not know about Darwin. You will learn about Darwin’s voyage around the world with Captain FitzRoy, the earthquake in Chile, the fossils in the Andes and Patagonia, and the eye-opening experience of visiting the Galapagos Islands that led Darwin to formulate his ideas about biological evolution. He explains to his grandson Natural Selection, the driving force of evolution, the Economy of Nature, the result of the fierce competition between organisms that are constantly under the pressure of natural selection, and why it is that he makes faces in the mirror. And they perform an experiment together on earthworms that really happened, using a piano played by Bernard’s grandmother.

Set in the Victorian era, Strangely Beautiful chronicles the adventures of the Guard ー ordinary people blessed with the ability to see ghosts, heal illness, dispel demons, and more. Despite their weighty tasks, they are still human, and their lives and loves are inevitably intertwined, even as they stand between humanity and all the horrors of the underworld.

Strangely Beautiful: Miss Persephone Parkerーknown as Percyーis different, with her lustrous, snow-white hair, pearlescent pale skin, and uncanny ability to see and communicate with ghosts. Seeking to continue her education, Percy has come to to the Athens Academy in Queen Victoria's London, not knowing that it is the citadel of The Guard. The Victorian Guard, latest incarnation of an ancient order that battles evil in all its forms, is led by Athens professor Alexi Rychman. Percy's lifelong habit of concealment, combined with Alexi's fevered search for the Guard's missing seventh member, nearly prove disastrous as ancient Greek myths begin playing out in modern, gaslit, Victorian London. Percy and her new friends and allies must overcome their preconceptions about each other and their own histories before they can set the world to rights.

Perilous Prophecy: In this enchanting prequel to Strangely Beautiful, Cairo in the 1860s is a bustling metropolis where people from all walks of life mix and mingle in complex harmony. When evil ghosts and unquiet spirits stalk the city’s streets, the Guard are summonedーsix young men and women of different cultures, backgrounds, and faiths, gifted by their Goddess with great powers. While others of the Guard embrace their duties, their leader, British-born Beatrice, is gripped by doubt. What right has she, a bookish, sheltered, eighteen-year-old, to lead others into battle? Why isn’t dark-eyed, compelling Ibrahim the one in charge? As ghosts maraud through Cairo’s streets, heralding a terrible darkness, Beatrice and her Guard have little time to master their powers; a great battle looms as an ancient prophecy roars toward its final, deadly conclusion.

Miss Violet and the Great War: An adventure full of passion and power. From childhood, Violet Rychman--daughter of Percy and Alexi--has dreamed of a coming war, of death and battle on an unimaginable scale. Like her mother, she has seen and heard ghosts, who have loved and guided her. Now the future Violet dreamed is coming to pass as World War I rages across Europe. Millions of people are dying; entire villages are disappearing. Violet is nearly overcome when the Muses of antiquity offer her powers greater even than those of her parents or the Guard. The ability to impact people’s memories, even shape their thoughts. To guide their souls. To pass between the world of the living and that of the dead and to bring others through that passage. Violet must use these gifts in an attempt to stop death itself, lest the whole world be destroyed.

At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Strangely Enough【

Neglected by society, a group of caravanning 60-somethings encounter a place where time stops. A baby swims in a witch’s cauldron. A statue of Jesus grows fat off fish and chips. An ancient Egyptian God swims through the sewers under a suburban street and a desperate family harvests the fingers they find growing in their soil after their final food supplies wither.

Strangely Enough is a celebration of the far-reaching possibilities of short fiction from some of Australia’s most creatively ambitious minds. Surreal and haunting, funny and gripping, these intensely strange tales encompass what it means to grieve, love, wonder, fear and change, each ultimately offering something entirely unexpected and strangely, deeply human.

**‘**Strangely Enough is an unsettling yet moreish anthology. Many of these stories skilfully recognise that strangeness lives close to home, in the mundane in a row of slippers, in mushrooms, in broth, in our own fallible bodies that can be cut down by a whiff of pollen or a miniature man with a surfboard; some stories suggest that peace can be found in the most unlikely places, and that strange happenings present opportunities to find our authentic selves; while other stories are quick, potent darts shot out from the shadowy nooks of the authors' imaginations. I look forward to the next time I encounter the work of these talented writers ー I look forward to the bewilderment, terror, and delight.’ ー Elizabeth Tan, author of Rubik and Smart Ovens for Lonely People

‘Strangely Enough is a treasure box of the gloriously weird. A Christ statue grows fat on fast food, a band of miniature surfers seeks the perfect wave, a woman welcomes a cat into her home to bizarre consequences. This wonderful anthology, curated by the team behind the Australian Short Story Festival, is a must read for anyone who delights in the strange, the dark and the twisted.’ ー Wayne Marshall, author of Shirl

Contributors Include:

Leo Alder

Shaeden Berry

Liz Betts

Mikaela Castledine

Az Cosgrove

Dorothy-Jane Daniels

Jake Dean

Rebecca-Anne Do Rozario

Xandra Fowler

Deborah Frenkel

Victoria Griffin

Rowan Heath

Keren Heenan

Matthew Hooton

Katy Knighton

Marian Matta

Sam Mayne

Helena Pantsis

Raeden Richardson

Amber K Tilley

R T Wenzel

Publication made possible by the Australian Government through the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand Fund.

A maverick detective, James Julius, feels a strange connection to a feisty teenager. Fourteen-year-old Amy had stabbed her uncle, who she believed was going to rape her. Her belief came from “reading his mind”. Julius arrested her, but doesn’t buy her telepathic explanation. He is a hard-nosed detective who believes that facts solve crimes…especially when hashed out over nice Irish ale. But there is something about Amy that won’t let go of him.

After Amy’s lawyer is stabbed in the same way as her uncle, Amy disappears. Julius must now go under the facts. He is required to deal with Amy’s guardian, Vivian, whose right wing politics create an emotional roller coaster for anyone for around her.

Strangely Familiar is told in present tense and is deeply rooted in the streets, buildings and bars of Minneapolis and St. Paul about 2012, with a brief adventure into San Francisco.

While bemoaning Amy’s contradictions, Julius learns that sexual harassers & abusers may have an instinct for identifying who is vulnerable. He is not sure if Amy is a perp or a victim, but he feels compelled to find her. In his attempt to figure out whether she has run away or been kidnapped, he crosses a politically correct line. The Chief of Police suspends him for a privacy violation and blocks his search for Amy. To continue his search, Julius accepts a temp job as a reporter, going semi-undercover.

His new editor associates him with Amy and cynically assigns him to a paranormal story. Julius rejects ESP as nonsense. But when he starts seeing things that others don’t see and hearing voices when others aren’t speaking, he fears he’s losing his mind. He keeps encountering strangers who feel familiar to him and professionals who explain his visons and odd emotions as the side effects of empathy or mirror neurons.

Some former enemies on the police force label him unstable. They exploit his impulsiveness and make him a suspect for intrusions into a lawyer’s office, a therapy center and the judicial system. Julius’s memory for important details is fuzzy. His attorney uses a hypnotist to fill in the gaps. Details are recalled, but there is no way to verify whether they are accurate or not.

As he meets more people who have been abused, Julius perceives a mysterious link between victims and perpetrators. He suspects that when people have experienced similar severe pain, they become strangely familiar to each other?as if communicating openly by an emotional Wi-Fi.

Julius feels more unnerved about his mental health and retreats inwardly. Unexpected help arrives from friends including two academics with heart, his oddball ex-partner and his neighbor. Strangers?a playful gypsy, a hacker who digs deep under emails, a retired journalist who resurrects the Jewish Mafia of the 1940, and a rogue priest?provide co-incidents that perplex him, but help connect the dots and locate Amy. Julius realizes that emotions can be trusted and that logic alone will not solve a mystery?it needs empathy.

Moses’ Double Standard Dealership Why Pastors Act Strangely【電子書籍】[ Rev Emmanuel Oghene ]

Why Pastors Act Strangely exemplified by Moses Double Standard Dealership Style reveals that Men of Gods mistakes are usually multi-dimensional. There is what we can call Mans Monumental Monstrous Metamorphosis practiced it is that the job of leading the Israelites that Moses rejected earlier, he was no longer eager to give up and be replaced by Korah who volunteered to do so. These do not add up. There is also the subject of Men of Gods Monstrous Mindset, Mannerisms, Methods and Tactics (MGMMMT). It is part of Mans Mind Mutilating Manners and Manliness. Moses was bold and courageous to use his God-given privilege as he deemed fit and to the best of his interest and that of his loved ones. Maybe, God gave His designated representatives in any generation that privilege because fundamentally, He had meant man to take charge of the earth on His behalf as long as man obeyed Him. If so, then Moses was still in order as far as God was concerned.

![Image 1][]![Image 1][]Stand a Little Out of My Sun - "An elegant . . . compelling multigenerational drama . . . the text is entertaining and vibrant, rich with details of Greek American culture, '50s and '60s Chicago." Kirkus Reviews

Featured in the June, 2021 edition of Kirkus Reviews . . . One of the Top Indie Summer Reads.

Winner - National Indie Excellence Awards 2021: Category: General Fiction

5 star review - Readers' Favorite 2021

Stand a Little Out of My Sun captures the dramatic crosscurrents of life within the folds of a Greek American family in Chicago's Industrial Southeast Side during the fifties.

It tells the story of Sophie Poulos, who becomes the sole protector of her little brother, Niko. Sophie wishes to live with her grandparents with their big passions and abundant love, but Niko idolizes their pa. Nine-year-old Niko becomes the newest member of an under-the-table car business run by his pa. He shuts Sophie out, and she can't bear the way his eyes have begun to get the same hard flash as their father's.

The core of this multigenerational and multicultural story tests the bounds of a family's loyalty and its astonishing mercy under impossible circumstances.

"The pleasant smell of flinty steel, tires, and grease filled his head.
