Oblomov A Lethargic Tale of Societal Apathy and Missed Opportunities【電子書籍】[ Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov ]
|

In his seminal work "Oblomov," Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov crafts a poignant narrative that explores the themes of inertia, identity, and the socio-political landscape of 19th-century Russia. The novel's titular character, Ilya Oblomov, embodies a profound existential malaise, a sense of lethargy that reflects the broader cultural stagnation of the Russian aristocracy. Goncharov'??s literary style deftly blends realism with rich character studies, employing a subtle, ironic tone that invites readers to ponder the consequences of inaction in a rapidly changing world. Through Oblomov'??s struggles and relationships, particularly with the spirited Olga, Goncharov critiques both the individual'??s responsibility and the societal expectations that bind them. Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov, born into a noble family in 1812, became a prominent figure of Russian literature with his nuanced understanding of human psychology and social dynamics. His experiences in both rural and urban settings, combined with his travels, significantly influenced his portrayal of the Russian gentry. Goncharov's keen observation of society'??s transformations, alongside his own frustrations with complacency, underpin the character of Oblomov, making the narrative not only a personal reflection but also a broader commentary on his time. "Oblomov" is an essential read for those keen on exploring the complexities of human nature and the societal constructs that shape existence. This novel resonates with readers today, serving as a reminder of the perils of inertia and the importance of engagement in our lives. It is a powerful lens through which one can examine personal and collective identity in the face of changing landscapes.

Apathy for the Devil A Seventies Memoir【電子書籍】[ Nick Kent ]

Chronicling Nick Kent's up-close , personal, often harrowing adventures with the Rolling Stones, Lester Bangs, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Sex Pistols, and Chrissie Hynde, among scores of others, Apathy for the Devil is a picaresque memoir that bears witness to the beautiful and the damned of this turbulent decade.

As a college dropout barely out of his teens, Kent's first five interviews were with the MC5, Captain Beefheart, the Grateful Dead, the Stooges, and Lou Reed. But after the excitement and freedom of those early years, his story would come to mirror that of the decade itself, as he slipped into excess and ever-worsening heroin use. Apathy for the Devil is a compelling story of inspiration, success, burn out, and rebirth from a classic wordsmith.

The Catholic Labyrinth Power, Apathy, and a Passion for Reform in the American Church【電子書籍】[ Peter McDonough ]
|

Sexual abuse scandals, declining attendance, a meltdown in the number of priests and nuns, the closing of many parishes and parochial schools--all have shaken American Catholicism. Yet conservatives have increasingly dominated the church hierarchy. In The Catholic Labyrinth, Peter McDonough tells a tale of multiple struggles that animate various groups--the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, Voice of the Faithful, and the Leadership Roundtable chief among them--pushing to modernize the church. One contest pits reformers against those who back age-old standards of sexual behavior and gender roles. Another area of contention, involving efforts to maintain the church's far-flung operations in education, social services, and healthcare, raises constitutional issues about the separation of church and state. Once a sidebar to this debate, the bishops' campaign to control the terms of employment and access to contraceptives in church-sponsored ministries has fueled conflict further. McDonough draws on behind-the-scenes documentation and personal interviews with leading reformers and "loyalists" to explore how both retrenchment and resistance to clericalism have played out in American Catholicism. Despite growing support for optional celibacy among priests, the ordination of women, and similar changes, and in the midst of numerous departures from the church, immigration and a lingering reaction against the upheavals of the sixties have helped sustain a popular traditionalism among "Catholics in the pews." So have the polemics of Catholic neoconservatives. These demographic and cultural factors--as well as the silent dissent of those who simply ignore rather than oppose the church's more regressive positions--have reinforced a culture of deference that impedes reform. At the same time, selective managerial improvements show promise of advancing incremental change. Timely and incisive, The Catholic Labyrinth captures the church at a historical crossroads, as advocates for change struggle to reconcile religious mores with the challenges of modernity.

Better Living Through Selective Apathy is your helpful guide to achieving a healthy and balanced life. Making a conscious decision about what is worth caring about helps us to understand the reasons why we have stress and anxiety in the first place, and how to avoid the majority of stress-causing variables in our daily life.

We are bombarded with "daily atrocities" from every direction. Every one of these are molehills we are expected to turn into mountains, but doing so only strands us in a mountain range from which there is no escape. We cannot be effective in coping with problems or creating necessary change in our world when we are spread in too many directions. Better Living Through Selective Apathy does not mean refusing to care about anything. It is learning to step back and objectively examine every piece of information we have presented to us, and determining an appropriate response instead of having a knee-jerk reaction. It is being selective with which molehills we make into the mountains we can successfully cross. It is selecting to be apathetic to the drama others try to create in our lives. It is selecting to be apathetic to religious and political extremism. It is selecting to be apathetic to the problems of xenophobia, intolerance, cruelty, and dwelling unnecessarily on either the past or the future. It is your guide to a more stoic approach to life, helping to reduce anxiety and stress.

Click On Democracy The Internet's Power To Change Political Apathy Into Civic Action【電子書籍】[ Grant Reeher ]

Click on Democracy examines the first national election in which the Internet played a major role. The contributors argue that the Internet's most profound political impact on Election 2000 has largely been missed or underestimated. The reason: the difference it made was more social than electoral, more about building political communities than about generating votes and money. The contributors to Click on Democracy talk at length with the people who are using the Internet in new and effective ways, and who are capitalizing on the Internet s power as a networking tool for civic action. Viewed from this bottom-up perspective, the Internet emerges as an exciting and powerful source of renewal for civic engagement. The new foreword is from Scott Heiferman and William Finkel, both of Meetup, Inc.

CAMPAIGN PROMISES AND POLITICAL APATHY A CASE STUDY OF BUHARI ADMINISTRATION (2015-2021)【電子書籍】[ MfonAbasi Okon ]
|

ABSTRACT

The study examined Campaign Promises and Political Apathy: A Case Study of Buhari Administration (2015-2021). The objective of the study was to establish any possible relationship between failed campaign promises and political apathy in order to determine the reasons for low voters’ turnout for public elections in Nigeria. The study used historical and descriptive research as method of the study. The study made use of secondary data such as books, journal articles, magazines/newspapers and the Internet. Data collected were analyzed using the content analytical method and in the end it was revealed failed campaigns promises during elections cause political apathy and also insecurity, as part of failed campaign promises, tends to cause political apathy among citizens. The study adopted Rational Choice Theory as framework whose main crux is that human beings will always make a decision that maximizes their satisfaction and reduce loss. The thrust of the theory is centered on the reality that the aggregate behaviour in the society is a reflection of individual choice made to reflect their preferences. The findings of the study revealed that the problem of political apathy is that politicians tend to make many unfulfilled campaign promises during elections and then fail to fulfill those promises when they are elected. Also, insecurity plays a part in causing political apathy as most citizens lose interest in political participation due to security issues. The study concluded that major factors responsible for low political participation and low voter turnout in the 2019 presidential election include failure of political office holders to fulfill campaign promises they made prior to election, long queues before voting and lack of confidence in electoral body to conduct free, fair and credible elections and violence during elections were the major factors responsible for low voter turnout in the 2019 presidential election in Nigeria. The study recommended that elected political leaders should always fulfill their campaign promises which they made to the people during campaigns.

Sustaining Conflict Apathy and Domination in Israel-Palestine【電子書籍】[ Katherine Natanel ]
|

Sustaining Conflict develops a groundbreaking theory of political apathy, using a combination of ethnographic material, narrative, and political, cultural, and feminist theory. It examines how the status quo is maintained in Israel-Palestine, even by the activities of Jewish Israelis who are working against the occupation of Palestinian territories. The book shows how hierarchies and fault lines in Israeli politics lead to fragmentation, and how even oppositional power becomes routine over time. Most importantly, the book exposes how the occupation is sustained through a carefully crafted system that allows sympathetic Israelis to “knowingly not know,” further disconnecting them from the plight of Palestinians. While focusing on Israel, this is a book that has lessons for how any authoritarian regime is sustained through apathy.

The Government of British Trade Unions A Study of Apathy and the Democratic Process in the Transport and General Workers Union【電子書籍】[ Joseph Goldstein ]
|

Originally published in 1952, The Government of British Trade Unions analyses the government, in theory and in practice, of one of Britain’s most important labour organizations ? The Transport and General Works Union in the first half of the 20th Century. It is an appraisal of the role of the rank and file within this union of over one million members, to determine both the opportunity for, and the extent of their participation in, this State within a State. Original sources and materials, which had not previously been made public in relation to any major British or American Trade Union, were used to ascertain member turnover, participation in elections, attendance at Branch meetings and the effect of the repeal of the Trade Disputes Act on Labour Party membership. The study is of great interest both for the light it throws on the general question of Trade Unions in the modern State, and for its analysis of the Transport and General Works Union itself.

Few people understand the difficulties animal rights activists undergo. Some regard them as extremists or eccentric; rebels or ridiculous. Either way, the activists battle through all the human apathy and ignorance to reveal their good intentions; to be a voice to the voiceless and protect the defenseless. This book gives the public a true rendition of how some of us endure many obstacles while attempting to change the public outlook on animal and human coexistence. Until the human populous stops referring to animals as "property" very little will be accomplished in the fight to preserve animal dignity, welfare and protection. Yet the battle will never cease until mankind realizes the threat on overall humanity, should we give up on our animal friends; domestic, farm and wild. There are both positives and negatives within the various animal rights groups while each can reveal to us effective and unique end results toward the goal of animal liberation. Great strides will be made yet at a cost that many activists will inevitably bear . . . all in the name of liberation . . .

Apathy Is Out: Selected Poems N? R?ord?in ]
|

Se?n ? R?ord?in (1916-77) was the most important and most influential Irish-language poet of modern times. He revitalised poetry in Irish, combining the world of Irish literature with that of modern English and European literature, thus adding to the Irish tradition from the other side. His poems ‘seek to answer fundamental questions about the nature of human existence and the place of the individual in a universe without meaning’ (Gear?id Denvir). Many of ? R?ord?in’s poems came out of his struggle with the isolation, guilt and loneliness of life in mid-century Catholic Ireland experienced in Cork, the native locale also of the poet Greg Delanty, translator of Apathy Is Out. ? R?ord?in’s poems have been translated by many poets, but until now no single writer has translated the majority of the poems. This collection gives a much more unified sense of ? R?ord?in’s work, catching the poetry’s verve, playfulness and range and also ‘the music you still hear in Munster,/even in places where it has gone under’. It includes the dark, sorrowful poems ? R?ord?in has usually represented with in anthologies but also poems of exuberance and celebration, notably ‘Tulyar’, one of the funniest satirical critiques of the Irish Church’s attitude to sex which matches any similar attack by Patrick Kavanagh or Austin Clarke. Se?n ? R?ord?in renewed poetry in Irish by writing out of the modernist sense of alienation, fragmentation and identity, but he also saw beyond Modernism’s confines to the connective matrix of our world.

Psychoanalysis, Apathy, and the Postmodern Patient【電子書籍】[ Laurence Kahn ]

The postmodern turn underlies a new development in psychoanalysis, which has theoretical and practical implications. Psychoanalysis, Apathy, and the Postmodern Patient involves a detailed reading of the main psychoanalytic texts that mark out this extended development, along with a critical examination of the changes in the major Freudian concepts. At stake are the tenets of infantile sexuality, ‘psychic reality,’ unconscious determinism, the fulfilment of unconscious desire, and free association.

In this book, Laurence Kahn sets out a critique of postmodern psychoanalysis, via a theoretical and clinical discussion that tackles the place of metapsychology and the question of the scientific status of psychoanalysis. Starting from Freud’s own work, she considers such key topics as the analyst’s objectivity, the relevance of self-disclosure, the complex influence of French postmodern theorists, and the role of empathy in psychoanalytic technique. In so doing, she offers a perspective on psychoanalytic thought and practice that exposes the insidious taming of the Freudian model in favour of a 'humanistic' and 'dialogic' approach that obliterates the radical otherness of the unconscious.

Coming from a powerful voice in the contemporary French psychoanalytic tradition, Psychoanalysis, Apathy, and the Postmodern Patient is a bold celebration of psychoanalysis that will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, as well as philosophers and historians of thought.

The Apathy of Empire Cambodia in American Geopolitics【電子書籍】[ James A. Tyner ]

What America’s intervention in Cambodia during the Vietnam War reveals about Cold War?era U.S. national security strategy

The Apathy of Empire reveals just how significant Cambodia was to U.S. policy in Indochina during the Vietnam War, broadening the lens to include more than the often-cited incursion in 1970 or the illegal bombing after the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. This theoretically informed and thoroughly documented case study argues that U.S. military intervention in Cambodia revealed America’s efforts to construct a hegemonic spatial world order.

James Tyner documents the shift of America’s post-1945 focus from national defense to national security. He demonstrates that America’s expansionist policies abroad, often bolstered by military power, were not so much about occupying territory but instead constituted the construction of a new normal for the exercise of state power. During the Cold War, Vietnam became the geopolitical lodestar of this unfolding spatial order. And yet America’s grand strategy was one of contradiction: to build a sovereign state (South Vietnam) based on democratic liberalism, it was necessary to protect its boundariesーin effect, to isolate itーthrough both covert and overt operations in violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty. The latter was deemed necessary for the former.

Questioning reductionist geopolitical understandings of states as central or peripheral, Tyner explores this paradox to rethink the formulation of the Cambodian war as sideshow, revealing it instead as a crucial site for the formation of this new normal.

Retail e-book files for this title are screen-reader friendly.

Comfortably Numb A Study of Apathy in Malachi【電子書籍】[ Eddie Wren ]

Apathy or neglect of faith is not a new problem in the church. As conveyed in the Old Testament, God regularly confronted the apathy of His people and used prophets, such as Malachi, to call His people to believe in Him, and honor Him with their words, worship, and all they were. In Comfortably Numb, Pastor Eddie Wren shares a detailed exploration of the Old Testament book of Malachi that provides a candid glimpse into the current state of the American church and its worshippers as they battle to shake the apathy that is gripping their lives and hearts, and ultimately serve the Lord with passion. While relying on the words of the fiery prophet for inspiration, Dr. Wren delves into the scripture that encourages believers to hear the accusations, respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and walk in obedience to the Lord. Comfortably Numb explores the book of Malachi and shares wisdom from a seasoned pastor while reminding weary Christians to believe in the promise of God’s love and divine plan.

Deep Social Apathy Apects of Racial Social Neural Experimentation【電子書籍】[ David Render ]

We spend so much time staring at our screens that we forget to look up and see the people who are right there with us. This lack of social empathy is having a negative impact on our relationships, our communities, and our world. Social empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It's about putting yourself in someone else's shoes and seeing the world from their perspective. When we have social empathy, we are more likely to be compassionate, helpful, and understanding. There are many things that we can do to increase our social empathy. One way is to simply spend more time interacting with people face-to-face. When we talk to someone in person, we can see their facial expressions and body language, which helps us to better understand their emotions. We can also try to be more mindful of our own emotions and how they affect others. When we are aware of our own emotions, we are better able to regulate them and avoid saying or doing things that might hurt someone else. Another way to increase our social empathy is to learn about different cultures and perspectives. When we learn about different ways of life, we become more aware of the challenges that others face. This can help us to be more understanding and compassionate towards people who are different from us. Social empathy is a vital part of a healthy society. When we have social empathy, we are more likely to be kind, caring, and supportive of others. We are also more likely to work together to solve problems and create a better world for everyone. Here are some tips for increasing your social empathy: * Spend more time interacting with people face-to-face. * Be mindful of your own emotions and how they affect others. * Learn about different cultures and perspectives. * Be kind and compassionate towards others, even if they are different from you. * Work together to solve problems and create a better world for everyone.

The neural pathways involved in social empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, found that two distinct brain regions are involved in social empathy: the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex. The anterior insula is a region of the brain that is involved in processing bodily sensations, such as pain, temperature, and touch. The anterior cingulate cortex is a region of the brain that is involved in processing emotions, such as fear, anger, and sadness. The researchers found that when people were shown images of people in pain, the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex were both activated. However, when people were shown images of people who were happy, only the anterior cingulate cortex was activated. This suggests that the anterior insula is specifically involved in processing the bodily sensations associated with pain, while the anterior cingulate cortex is involved in processing both bodily sensations and emotions. The study's findings provide new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying social empathy. This knowledge could help researchers develop new treatments for people with social empathy deficits, such as those with autism spectrum disorder.
