Apathy for the Devil A Seventies Memoir【電子書籍】[ Nick Kent ]

Chronicling Nick Kent's up-close , personal, often harrowing adventures with the Rolling Stones, Lester Bangs, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Sex Pistols, and Chrissie Hynde, among scores of others, Apathy for the Devil is a picaresque memoir that bears witness to the beautiful and the damned of this turbulent decade.

As a college dropout barely out of his teens, Kent's first five interviews were with the MC5, Captain Beefheart, the Grateful Dead, the Stooges, and Lou Reed. But after the excitement and freedom of those early years, his story would come to mirror that of the decade itself, as he slipped into excess and ever-worsening heroin use. Apathy for the Devil is a compelling story of inspiration, success, burn out, and rebirth from a classic wordsmith.

The Catholic Labyrinth Power, Apathy, and a Passion for Reform in the American Church【電子書籍】[ Peter McDonough ]

Sexual abuse scandals, declining attendance, a meltdown in the number of priests and nuns, the closing of many parishes and parochial schools--all have shaken American Catholicism. Yet conservatives have increasingly dominated the church hierarchy. In The Catholic Labyrinth, Peter McDonough tells a tale of multiple struggles that animate various groups--the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, Voice of the Faithful, and the Leadership Roundtable chief among them--pushing to modernize the church. One contest pits reformers against those who back age-old standards of sexual behavior and gender roles. Another area of contention, involving efforts to maintain the church's far-flung operations in education, social services, and healthcare, raises constitutional issues about the separation of church and state. Once a sidebar to this debate, the bishops' campaign to control the terms of employment and access to contraceptives in church-sponsored ministries has fueled conflict further. McDonough draws on behind-the-scenes documentation and personal interviews with leading reformers and "loyalists" to explore how both retrenchment and resistance to clericalism have played out in American Catholicism. Despite growing support for optional celibacy among priests, the ordination of women, and similar changes, and in the midst of numerous departures from the church, immigration and a lingering reaction against the upheavals of the sixties have helped sustain a popular traditionalism among "Catholics in the pews." So have the polemics of Catholic neoconservatives. These demographic and cultural factors--as well as the silent dissent of those who simply ignore rather than oppose the church's more regressive positions--have reinforced a culture of deference that impedes reform. At the same time, selective managerial improvements show promise of advancing incremental change. Timely and incisive, The Catholic Labyrinth captures the church at a historical crossroads, as advocates for change struggle to reconcile religious mores with the challenges of modernity.

Click On Democracy The Internet's Power To Change Political Apathy Into Civic Action【電子書籍】[ Grant Reeher ]

Click on Democracy examines the first national election in which the Internet played a major role. The contributors argue that the Internet's most profound political impact on Election 2000 has largely been missed or underestimated. The reason: the difference it made was more social than electoral, more about building political communities than about generating votes and money. The contributors to Click on Democracy talk at length with the people who are using the Internet in new and effective ways, and who are capitalizing on the Internet s power as a networking tool for civic action. Viewed from this bottom-up perspective, the Internet emerges as an exciting and powerful source of renewal for civic engagement. The new foreword is from Scott Heiferman and William Finkel, both of Meetup, Inc.

The Government of British Trade Unions A Study of Apathy and the Democratic Process in the Transport and General Workers Union【電子書籍】[ Joseph Goldstein ]

Originally published in 1952, The Government of British Trade Unions analyses the government, in theory and in practice, of one of Britain’s most important labour organizations ? The Transport and General Works Union in the first half of the 20th Century. It is an appraisal of the role of the rank and file within this union of over one million members, to determine both the opportunity for, and the extent of their participation in, this State within a State. Original sources and materials, which had not previously been made public in relation to any major British or American Trade Union, were used to ascertain member turnover, participation in elections, attendance at Branch meetings and the effect of the repeal of the Trade Disputes Act on Labour Party membership. The study is of great interest both for the light it throws on the general question of Trade Unions in the modern State, and for its analysis of the Transport and General Works Union itself.

Barking in the Wind Conflict with Human Apathy【電子書籍】[ V. Mezzatesta ]

Few people understand the difficulties animal rights activists undergo. Some regard them as extremists or eccentric; rebels or ridiculous. Either way, the activists battle through all the human apathy and ignorance to reveal their good intentions; to be a voice to the voiceless and protect the defenseless. This book gives the public a true rendition of how some of us endure many obstacles while attempting to change the public outlook on animal and human coexistence. Until the human populous stops referring to animals as "property" very little will be accomplished in the fight to preserve animal dignity, welfare and protection. Yet the battle will never cease until mankind realizes the threat on overall humanity, should we give up on our animal friends; domestic, farm and wild. There are both positives and negatives within the various animal rights groups while each can reveal to us effective and unique end results toward the goal of animal liberation. Great strides will be made yet at a cost that many activists will inevitably bear . . . all in the name of liberation . . .

In his insightful book, "The Age of Apathy," Sylvio Petrov addresses a pressing issue of our timesーthe alarming decline of empathy in contemporary society. Drawing from his extensive travels and observations, Petrov explores the multifaceted reasons behind this societal shift and its profound implications on personal and community levels.

About the Book As we navigate a world increasingly driven by digital interactions and polarizing politics, the sense of genuine human connection seems ever elusive. Psychoanalysis, Apathy, and the Postmodern Patient【電子書籍】[ Laurence Kahn ]

The postmodern turn underlies a new development in psychoanalysis, which has theoretical and practical implications. Psychoanalysis, Apathy, and the Postmodern Patient involves a detailed reading of the main psychoanalytic texts that mark out this extended development, along with a critical examination of the changes in the major Freudian concepts. At stake are the tenets of infantile sexuality, ‘psychic reality,’ unconscious determinism, the fulfilment of unconscious desire, and free association.

In this book, Laurence Kahn sets out a critique of postmodern psychoanalysis, via a theoretical and clinical discussion that tackles the place of metapsychology and the question of the scientific status of psychoanalysis. Starting from Freud’s own work, she considers such key topics as the analyst’s objectivity, the relevance of self-disclosure, the complex influence of French postmodern theorists, and the role of empathy in psychoanalytic technique. In so doing, she offers a perspective on psychoanalytic thought and practice that exposes the insidious taming of the Freudian model in favour of a 'humanistic' and 'dialogic' approach that obliterates the radical otherness of the unconscious.

Coming from a powerful voice in the contemporary French psychoanalytic tradition, Psychoanalysis, Apathy, and the Postmodern Patient is a bold celebration of psychoanalysis that will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, as well as philosophers and historians of thought.

The Apathy of Empire Cambodia in American Geopolitics【電子書籍】[ James A. Tyner ]

What America’s intervention in Cambodia during the Vietnam War reveals about Cold War?era U.S. national security strategy

The Apathy of Empire reveals just how significant Cambodia was to U.S. policy in Indochina during the Vietnam War, broadening the lens to include more than the often-cited incursion in 1970 or the illegal bombing after the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. This theoretically informed and thoroughly documented case study argues that U.S. military intervention in Cambodia revealed America’s efforts to construct a hegemonic spatial world order.

James Tyner documents the shift of America’s post-1945 focus from national defense to national security. He demonstrates that America’s expansionist policies abroad, often bolstered by military power, were not so much about occupying territory but instead constituted the construction of a new normal for the exercise of state power. During the Cold War, Vietnam became the geopolitical lodestar of this unfolding spatial order. And yet America’s grand strategy was one of contradiction: to build a sovereign state (South Vietnam) based on democratic liberalism, it was necessary to protect its boundariesーin effect, to isolate itーthrough both covert and overt operations in violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty. The latter was deemed necessary for the former.

Questioning reductionist geopolitical understandings of states as central or peripheral, Tyner explores this paradox to rethink the formulation of the Cambodian war as sideshow, revealing it instead as a crucial site for the formation of this new normal.

Retail e-book files for this title are screen-reader friendly.

There are stories of the kids and their parents who are willing to make changes and turn their lives around with lots of hard work. There are stories of kids and parents who just don't care and who don't change. And there are also stories of the wonderful, inspiring kids and their carers (from parents, grannies and grandpas, foster parents and adoptive parents) who will do anything within their power to keep families together, to keep families loving and safe and who instill that important sense of hope for the future.

Barbara's motto is that everyone in a community has responsibility for every child. To illustrate this, throughout the book, interspersed between the stories, are snippets of Barbara's wisdom and tips for everyone on raising kids looking out for them, and keeping them happy and safe. "No One Helped" Kitty Genovese, New York City, and the Myth of Urban Apathy【電子書籍】[ Marcia M. Gallo ]

In "No One Helped" Marcia M. Gallo examines one of America's most infamous true-crime stories: the 1964 rape and murder of Catherine "Kitty" Genovese in a middle-class neighborhood of Queens, New York. Front-page reports in the New York Times incorrectly identified thirty-eight indifferent witnesses to the crime, fueling fears of apathy and urban decay. Genovese's life, including her lesbian relationship, also was obscured in media accounts of the crime. Fifty years later, the story of Kitty Genovese continues to circulate in popular culture. Although it is now widely known that there were far fewer actual witnesses to the crime than was reported in 1964, the moral of the story continues to be urban apathy. "No One Helped" traces the Genovese story's development and resilience while challenging the myth it created.

"No One Helped" places the conscious creation and promotion of the Genovese story within a changing urban environment. Gallo reviews New York's shifting racial and economic demographics and explores post?World War II examinations of conscience regarding the horrors of Nazism. These were important factors in the uncritical acceptance of the story by most media, political leaders, and the public despite repeated protests from Genovese's Kew Gardens neighbors at their inaccurate portrayal. The crime led to advances in criminal justice and psychology, such as the development of the 911 emergency system and numerous studies of bystander behaviors. Gallo emphasizes that the response to the crime also led to increased community organizing as well as feminist campaigns against sexual violence. Even though the particulars of the sad story of her death were distorted, Kitty Genovese left an enduring legacy of positive changes to the urban environment.

Finding Your Pace Bridging the Gap Between Apathy and Being All God Called You to Be【電子書籍】[ Romney J. Ruder ]

It has been a great privilege for me to join hands with Lifeline Global Ministries. I’ll never forget my first experience at Angola State Prison when a large group of men was honored for completing the yearlong, Malachi Dads program. I was also deeply honored to present my Life Essentials Study Bible to each graduate and be able to spend some time training them to use it. Frankly, it was a life-changing experience. Since then, the opportunities have only multiplied. From Florida to California and beyond, men and women in a multitude of prisons are not only being redeemed through their faith in Jesus Christ, but they are growing and maturing in Christ because of Lifeline Global Ministries. You’ll learn more about this ministry in Finding Your Pace but even more significant, you’ll learn what it really means to enter and follow the narrow path that leads to life eternal. You will also immensely enjoy Romney’s athletic metaphors and similar biblical examples. The Apostle Paul loved to illustrate biblical truth with these illustrations even when facing death. Thus, he wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). Dr. Gene A.
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Technical University of Darmstadt, language: English, abstract: This discourse focuses on the different concepts of apathy that appear in literature. Not only characterizations of apathetic protagonists, but also abstract concepts of apathy help to explore this special topic. Several important literary works from all sorts of genres function as examples to explain these concepts. Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', Camus' 'The Stranger', Palahniuk's 'Fight Club', S?skind's 'Perfume' and Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' are only few of many literary works which are examined under the aspect of apathy in this work. 'Apathy is the lack of any kind of emotion. As emotions are essential to the conception of the human being, many approaches to understand this phenomenon have been made. The fields of psychology and biology are only two of several sciences which try to explain this phenomenon of alexithymia. But whereas the core and origin of this human condition are still being analysed, literature has been using the theme of apathy in several different ways. How this theme is used and which different concepts of apathy exist, will be examined in this discourse.'

Apathy for the devil Memorie dagli anni Settanta【電子書籍】[ Nick Kent ]

Living in the Age of Apathy A Collection of Short Writings Depicting Apathy as the Silent Killer of Humanity【電子書籍】[ Gregory Alexander Chinama ]

Living in the Age of Apathy is a captivating and insightful book that takes an in depth look at how apathy could be the downfall of the United States and perhaps humanity.

In this informative and engaging discussion of apathy, Army combat veteran, Gregory A. Chinama explores how apathy is the root cause in the destruction of the values and foundation of family as he experienced first-hand with his failed marriage. Chinama further explains that apathy is the ultimate reason to why the divorce rate in the U.S. continues to rise. Chinama also analyzes the youth in America and shows how many of our teenagers have adopted an "I don't care" attitude towards issues that are important in our society today. Politics is no exception; Chinama holds nothing back when identifying apathy among those whom Americans elect to be humble servants of the people. From comedians to the music we listen to, Living in the Age of Apathy will force you to question the country and the world in which we live.

While a brilliant and eye-opening book, Chinama's Living in The Age of Apathy is crucial in a time of declining faith and rising doubt of a prosperous future.

Sustaining Conflict Apathy and Domination in Israel-Palestine【電子書籍】[ Katherine Natanel ]

Sustaining Conflict develops a groundbreaking theory of political apathy, using a combination of ethnographic material, narrative, and political, cultural, and feminist theory. It examines how the status quo is maintained in Israel-Palestine, even by the activities of Jewish Israelis who are working against the occupation of Palestinian territories. The book shows how hierarchies and fault lines in Israeli politics lead to fragmentation, and how even oppositional power becomes routine over time. Most importantly, the book exposes how the occupation is sustained through a carefully crafted system that allows sympathetic Israelis to “knowingly not know,” further disconnecting them from the plight of Palestinians. While focusing on Israel, this is a book that has lessons for how any authoritarian regime is sustained through apathy.

Apathy and Other Small Victories A Novel【電子書籍】[ Paul Neilan ]

A young man indifferent about life gets caught up in a murder investigation in this debut comic novel.

"If Camus and Bukowski had written A Confederacy of Dunces and combined it with the screenplay for Office Space, it would have been this book. A triumphantly, weirdly hilarious comedy." ーNeil Pollack, author of Never Mind the Pollacks

The only thing Shane cares about is leaving. Usually on a Greyhound bus, right before his life falls apart again. Just like he planned. But this time it's complicated: there's a sadistic corporate climber who thinks she's his girlfriend, a rent-subsidized affair with his landlord's wife, and the bizarrely appealing deaf assistant to Shane's cosmically unstable dentist.

When one of the women is murdered, and Shane is the only suspect who doesn't care enough to act like he didn't do it, the question becomes just how he'll clear the good name he never had and doesn't particularly want: his own.

"The malaise of cubicle culture may be well-trodden comedic territory by now, but Neilan's debut skewers office life with a flourish for the grotesque." ー The Village Voice

"Neilan spins many sparkling comic riffs on the tawdriness and sterility of American life." ー Publishers Weekly
