|

Aristophanes: Clouds, Women at the Thesmophoria, Frogs A Verse Translation, with Introduction and Notes【電子書籍】[ Stephen Halliwell ]
|

Aristophanes is the only surviving representative of Greek Old Comedy, an exuberant form of festival drama which flourished in Athens during the fifth century BC. One of the most original playwrights in the entire Western tradition, his comedies are remarkable for their brilliant combination of fantasy and satire, their constantly inventive manipulation of language, and their use of absurd characters and plots to expose his society's institutions and values to the bracing challenge of laughter. This vibrant collection of verse translations of Aristophanes' works combines historical accuracy with a sensitive attempt to capture the rich dramatic and literary qualities of Aristophanic comedy. The volume presents Clouds, with its famous caricature of the philosopher Socrates; Women at the Thesmophoria (or Thesmophoriazusae), a work which mixes elaborate parody of tragedy with a great deal of transvestite burlesque; and Frogs, in which the dead tragedians Aeschylus and Euripides engage in a vituperative contest of 'literary criticism' of each other's plays. Featuring expansive introductions to each play and detailed explanatory notes, the volume also includes an illuminating appendix, which provides information and selected fragments from the lost plays of Aristophanes.

Lysistrata - The Original Classic Edition【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes Aristophanes ]
|

Lysistrata is a favorite of the Greek plays-its never pompous or overbearing, and it never overwhelms itself with flowery prose. In addition, its one of the few Greek plays youll read that portrays women as genuine human beings rather than murderers, decorations, or idiots. Theyre smart, sexy, and socially aware, especially in a time when they were very seriously repressed.

Lysistrata is an intelligent Athenian woman who is sick and tired of the Greek city-states warring against each other. She calls all the women she can round up and comes up with a strategy to end the wars: Keep away from their husbands beds, and the men will make peace with other cities to make peace with their wives. After a great deal of whining, the women agree to deprive their husbands of sex until peace is achieved. But thats only the beginning of what Lysistrata has planned...

Too many feminist tales end up being heavy-handed-though women are on the side of peace and right in this, it doesnt bang you over the head. The men are human as well. The comedy is sly and witty (though full of mild sex talk--nothing too raunchy) and the scene where one young woman unmercifully teases her love-hungry husband will have you rolling.

Its a story about the power that women can wield and the lengths that they can go to.

Read, laugh, guffaw! You wont regret it!

Aristophanes' The Birds is a timeless comedy, combining witty satire and raucous slapstick to delightful effect. Modern critics have acclaimed it as a perfectly realized fantasy remarkable for its mimicry of birds and for the gaiety of its songs.

His trademark bawdy comedy and dazzling verbal agility is much on display in The Birds, in which two cunning Athenians persuade the birds to build the utopian city of Necphelococcygia (which translates roughly as "Cloud Cuckoo Land"), thus obstructing the Olympian gods and installing themselves as new deities.

ARISTOPHENES (c. 445-386 BC) was a satirical playwright of ancient Athens. He had his first play produced when he was twenty-one, and wrote some forty plays in all. Little is known about his personal life, but he was twice threatened with prosecution in the 420s for his outspoken attacks on prominent politicians. In 405 however, his fortunes improved, and he was publicly honored for promoting Athenian unity in The Frogs. The Birds is generally recognized as one of Aristophanes' greatest masterpieces, for its incredibly imaginative plot and its clever lyrics.

Aristophanes and the Current Moment The Politics of Comedy【
|

Aristophanes' comedies have long been read as a response to the political turbulence of 5th-century Athens, particularly during the Peloponnesian War. However, this volume frames him as a 'political correspondent,' whose works engage critically with both his time and ours. The contributions to this volume explore the ways in which Aristophanes' comedy remains vital and disruptive in the present. The essays examine the tension between Aristophanes' comic exaggerations and their real-world implications, revealing how his humour both reflects and unsettles our current political and social concerns. Through topics like speech, violence, pedagogy, gender and populism, the contributors illustrate how Aristophanes' plays offer a lens through which to interrogate the fluidity of political and social power ? both in ancient Athens and today.

In doing so, this volume reflects the provisional nature of comedy itself: a genre built on misdirection, timing and the inevitable instability of its moment. By engaging with Aristophanes in the 'current moment,' this collection invites readers to embrace the elusiveness and tension inherent in both comedy and scholarly practice. Far from offering definitive answers, the plays challenge us to question, engage and reflect on our own commitments and complicities.

Aristophanes son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his 40 plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander contributing to the trial and execution of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. His second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." -wikipedia

Comedy in Literature and Popular Culture: From Aristophanes to Saturday Night Live explores works of comedy from the past 2,500 years.

James V. Morrison discusses works including those of Aristophanes and Plautus, Shakespeare and Moliere, and modern comic writers, performers, and cartoonists, such as Thomas Nast, P. G. Wodehouse, Charlie Chaplin, and Jerry Seinfeld, asking the following questions:

Is comedy a mirror of our lives? Is it “funny ’cuz it’s true?” Or is it funny because it ignores reality?

Should we distinguish between the plot of a comic play and the jokes found in it? Are the jokes just there to make us laugh or are the jokes as essential as the plot?

Do memories of satirical portrayals on the comic stage displace recollections of the historical person?

By juxtaposing works from different cultures and time periods, the book demonstrates a universal recourse to certain familiar techniques, situations, and characters.

This vibrant study offers a compelling analysis of comedy as a mode, form, and genre. It is an engaging read for students and scholars of comparative literature, literary history, media studies, and theater and performance.

The Clouds【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

"The Clouds" is a timeless Greek comedy written by Aristophanes, renowned for its sharp wit, satire, and philosophical inquiry. Set in ancient Athens, this comedic masterpiece follows the misadventures of Strepsiades, a debt-ridden farmer desperate to evade his financial troubles. Fueled by the promise of enlightenment and the power to argue his way out of debt, Strepsiades enrolls in the "Thinkery," an unconventional school led by the eccentric Socrates and his band of bumbling intellectuals.

As Strepsiades navigates the absurd teachings of the "Thinkery," including the rejection of traditional morality and the promotion of rhetorical trickery, he finds himself entangled in a series of ludicrous schemes and outlandish debates. Aristophanes expertly weaves together elements of slapstick humor, biting social commentary, and philosophical exploration, offering a hilarious yet thought-provoking exploration of the clash between tradition and innovation, ignorance and enlightenment.

Through uproarious dialogue and colorful characters, "The Clouds" lampoons the intellectual pretensions of Athenian society while raising timeless questions about the nature of education, the pursuit of knowledge, and the consequences of blindly following ideology. With its enduring relevance and irrepressible humor, "The Clouds" continues to captivate audiences and provoke laughter while challenging audiences to question their own beliefs and assumptions.

Pericles on Stage Political Comedy in Aristophanes' Early Plays【電子書籍】[ Michael Vickers ]
|

Since the eighteenth century, classical scholars have generally agreed that the Greek playwright Aristophanes did not as a matter of course write "political" plays. Yet, according to an anonymous Life of Aristophanes, when Dionysius the tyrant of Syracuse wanted to know about the government of Athens, Plato sent him a copy of Aristophanes' Clouds.

In this boldly revisionist work, Michael Vickers convincingly argues that in his earlier plays, Aristophanes in fact commented on the day-to-day political concerns of Athenians. Vickers reads the first six of Aristophanes' eleven extant plays in a way that reveals the principal characters to be based in large part on Pericles and his ward Alcibiades.

According to Vickers, the plays of Aristophanesーfar from being nonpoliticalーactually allow us to gauge the reaction of the Athenian public to the events that followed Pericles' death in 429 B.C., to the struggle for the political succession, and to the problems presented by Alcibiades' emergence as one of the most powerful figures in the state. This view of Aristophanes reaffirms the central role of allegory in his work and challenges all students of ancient Greece to rethink long-held assumptions about this important playwright.

Wasps and Other Plays A new verse translation, with introduction and notes【電子書籍】[ Aristophanes ]

|

'No matter which way you look at us, you'll find that we're in all respects; Remarkably wasp-like in our habits, in every aspect of our lives.' Aristophanes is the only surviving representative of Greek Old Comedy, an exuberant form of festival drama which flourished in Athens during the fifth century BCE. One of the most original playwrights in the entire Western tradition, his comedies are remarkable for their brilliant combination of fantasy and satire, their constantly inventive manipulation of language, and their use of absurd characters and plots to expose his society's institutions and values to the bracing challenge of laughter. This is the third and final volume of a new verse translation of the complete plays of Aristophanes. It contains four of his most overtly political plays: Acharnians, in which an Athenian farmer rebels against the city's war policies; Knights, a biting satire of populist demagogues; Wasps, whose main theme is the Athenian system of lawcourts; and Peace, in which escape from war is symbolized in images of rustic fertility and sensuality. The translation combines historical accuracy with a sensitive attempt to capture the rich dramatic and literary qualities of Aristophanic comedy. Each play is presented with a thought-provoking introduction and extensive editorial notes to accompany the vivid translations, balancing performability with faithfulness to the original.

In The Knights, the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes delivers a biting political satire targeting the demagogue Cleon, one of the most powerful figures in Athenian politics. Written during the Peloponnesian War, the play follows a group of slaves who conspire to overthrow a corrupt and blustery war profiteerーa transparent stand-in for Cleonーwho has gained control over the city-state and manipulates the people for personal gain. With bold humor, clever dialogue, and typical Aristophanic irreverence, the play critiques greed, demagoguery, and the decline of democratic integrity. Featuring a grotesque yet brilliant mix of slapstick, fantasy, and pointed social commentary, The Knights showcases Aristophanes’ talent for using comedy as a weapon against political abuse and civic complacency. In The Frogs, written during the Peloponnesian War, Dionysus descends to the Underworld to bring back a poet who can help Athens in its darkest hour, and stages a great debate to help him decide between the traditional wisdom of Aeschylus and the brilliant modernity of Euripides. The clash of generations and values is also the object of Aristophanes’ satire in The Wasps, in which an old-fashioned father and his loose-living son come to blows and end up in court.
Lysistrata is a comedy originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC. A comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peaceーa strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The Art of Veiled Speech Self-Censorship from Aristophanes to Hobbes【電子書籍】

Throughout Western history, there have been those who felt compelled to share a dissenting opinion on public matters, while still hoping to avoid the social, political, and even criminal consequences for exercising free speech. In this collection of fourteen original essays, editors Han Baltussen and Peter J. Davis trace the roots of censorship far beyond its supposed origins in early modern history.

Beginning with the ancient Greek concept of parrh?sia, and its Roman equivalent libertas, the contributors to The Art of Veiled Speech examine lesser-known texts from historical periods, some famous for setting the benchmark for free speech, such as fifth-century Athens and republican Rome, and others for censorship, such as early imperial and late antique Rome. Medieval attempts to suppress heresy, the Spanish Inquisition, and the writings of Thomas Hobbes during the Reformation are among the examples chosen to illustrate an explicit link of cultural censorship across time, casting new light on a range of issues: Which circumstances and limits on free speech were in play? What did it mean for someone to "speak up" or "speak truth to authority"?

Drawing on poetry, history, drama, and moral and political philosophy the volume demonstrates the many ways that writers over the last 2500 years have used wordplay, innuendo, and other forms of veiled speech to conceal their subversive views, anticipating censorship and making efforts to get around it. The Art of Veiled Speech offers new insights into the ingenious methods of self-censorship to express controversial views, revealing that the human voice cannot be easily silenced.

Contributors: Pauline Allen, Han Baltussen, Megan Cassidy-Welch, Peter J. Davis, Andrew Hartwig, Gesine Manuwald, Bronwen Neil, Lara O'Sullivan, Jon Parkin, John Penwill, Fran?ois Soyer, Marcus Wilson, Ioannis Ziogas.

Three More Plays by Aristophanes Staging Politics【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey Henderson ]
|

This volume provides modern, uncensored translations of Aristophanes’ Acharnians, Knights, and Wasps. These plays, originally a series, are the world’s earliest political satires, and are made available here for the first time in one volume, augmented by full introductions and notes.

In these three works, Aristophanes launched satirical attacks on Cleon, the world’s first demagogue, and explored the vulnerability of democracy to populist manipulation and disinformation. Henderson's fresh translations and exploration of the themes within them enable readers to explore the perils facing democracy in its first century which are still with us today. The Introduction offers the reader background on Aristophanes' life, Athenian democracy, classical drama, as well as on political comedy, while introductions to each individual play provide the reader with context. An appendix also collects selected fragments from Aristophanes' lost political plays.

Three More Plays by Aristophanes offers an invaluable collection of these works for students and faculty working on classical studies, theatre and theatre history, and drama. The clear translations and contextualizing introductions and notes also make these plays accessible to students of government, law, and political science, and to the general reader interested in any of these subjects.
