Attila the Hun A Captivating Guide to the Ruler of the Huns and His Invasions of the Roman Empire【電子書籍】[ Captivating History ]

If you want to discover the captivating history of Attila the Hun, then keep reading...

In the popular imagination, Attila the Hun is among the most barbaric leaders ever. His warriors have the reputation of being ruthless, cruel, and bloodthirsty, as the Huns are believed to have been savages lacking any semblance of civilized culture.

The Huns raped and pillaged with abandon whenever the opportunity arose, and their raids into lands poorly protected by military outposts in the crumbling Roman Empire became legendary. The Huns under the command of Attila are thought to have been largely responsible for the collapse of the Roman Empire and the commencement of the Dark Ages in Europe.

The reputation of Attila and his people, the Huns, is at odds with reality. But examining the few historical records of his character and deeds reveals quite a different story. It is true that he was a calculating leader who was skilled at unleashing his fierce fighters when necessary. It is also recorded in history that he was a continual thorn in the side of the Romans. However, placed in historical context, Attila acted in ways that were common among leaders, both Roman and barbarian, in the first half of the 5th century. What is extraordinary about him were his uncanny abilities in negotiations with superior powers, his capacity for matching and exceeding his enemies in duplicitous behavior, and his successes as a military tactician on the battlefield.

In Attila the Hun: A Captivating Guide to the Ruler of the Huns and His Invasions of the Roman Empire, you will discover topics such as:

The Origins of Attila and the Huns

The Wars of the Huns Before Attila

An Alliance Between the Huns and the Romans

Attila Attacks the Byzantines

Attila Attacks the Byzantines Again

Attila Foils a Byzantine Plot

Attila's Diplomatic Strategy Evolves in the West

Attila Raids Gaul

Attila Raids Italy

The Disintegration of Attila's Kingdom

And much, much more!

So if you want to learn more about Attila the Hun, scroll up and click the "add to cart" button!

Attila, King of the Huns, and His Predecessors【電子書籍】[ William Herbert ]

Attila, often referred to as Attila the Hun, was the ruler of the Huns from 434 until his death in 453. He was leader of the Hunnic Empire, which stretched from the Ural River to the Rhine River and from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea. He was one of the most feared enemies of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. He crossed the Danube twice and plundered the Balkans, but was unable to capture Constantinople. He attempted to conquer Gaul (modern France), crossing the Rhine in 451 and marching as far as Aurelianum (Orl?ans) before being defeated at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. Subsequently he invaded Italy, plundering the northern provinces, but was unable to take Rome. He planned for further campaigns against the Romans but died in 453. Herberts Attila, King of the Huns and His Predecessors is an expansive history of the Huns, their origins, and Attilas conquests. Attila and His Conquerors: A Story of the Days of St. Patrick and St. Leo the Great【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Rundle Charles ]

They sat together on a crag close to their home, the young brother and sister, Baithene and Ethne, only son and daughter of a chieftain of the great clan O’Neill. Prince and princess they might have been called in legendary story, and their father and mother king and queen. For there were many kings in Ireland in those early centuries, as afterwards many saints. And yet neither of these great titles, though counted by the score, were unmeaning. The saints were men and women vowed and consecrated to a holy life of devotion and service:ーa true aristocracy in the Church. Homage was rendered them because nobleness was expected of them. And the kings were distinguished as really, in the minds of their people and clan, from all beneath them, as men of another stamp and metal from the rest, with a royal superscription. To serve them was honour; to obey them was imperative necessity and sacred duty; to live for them was life worth living; to die for them was death worth dying. Conan, king or chief of one branch of the O’Neills, father of Baithene and Ethne, and his wife, however poor their palace and small their kingdom, were served and honoured with a free, unquestioning loyalty altogether unknown in the servile, mercenary courts of their contemporary sovereigns in the palaces of Constantinople or Ravenna. Therefore these childrenーfor they were scarcely more, the boy seventeen, the maiden sixteenーhad been surrounded from infancy with an atmosphere of loving homage. Their home, outside which they sat, overlooking the sea, was not much better than a settler’s lodge, built of mud and timber, with rough unhewn stones; yet it was essentially a palace, for those who dwelt in it were acknowledged to be royal. Outside, on the hill below, some of the clansmen guarded it night and day, and no stranger could enter unchallenged; it was the hall of feasting, the gathering-place for battle, the seat of judgment for the people. Except the brother and sister, and the guard watching on the hillside, out of sight at that moment, every one was asleep. For it was late; the sun had set an hour or two, the moon was making her long path of silvery light on the waves below, and the youth and maiden sat together in the soft evening air clad in the sacred white robes, Ethne still with the white veil on her head. For this had been a great day for them. There had been a Christian baptism on the hill of Tara, a few miles away, and in the well on the hillside the brother and sister, with their mother, had been baptized by the great missionary Patrick into the Christian name; and also, at the same time, numbers of their people, among them many of the Druids and bards, the priests and poets of their race. Their father had been present, but could not himself yet enter that solemn gate. He had too many wars on hand; too many clan wrongs that could not forego vengeance; too many enemies whom he was not quite clear he could include in the great peace which the Christ was said to bring. He was too sure of the rough work that might have to be done outside that gate of baptism, too doubtful of the kind of world he might find within, to venture yet to enter. But the message the Gallo-Roman bishop brought seemed so great, and from Powers so great, the story of compassion and sacrifice so beautiful, and his wife had adopted it with such joy, that he could not refuse that she and the children should enter a world that seemed so fair. The mother had remained at Tara, with her husband and the chieftains, for the night; and the children were alone in the house, under the charge of the old nurse, with the rest of the household. “I felt the bishop’s hands rest on my head,” said Baithene, in a low tone, “and his deep voice went through me. The words were Latin, but I think I understood most of them.

Passion and Addiction in Sports and Exercise【電子書籍】[ Attila Szabo ]

Passion and Addiction in Sports and Exercise is about the bright and dark aspects of sports and exercise behavior and revolves around two closely related yet distinct concepts. Passion is a joyful and healthy reflection of one’s enjoyment and dedication to an adopted sport or exercise. At the same time, exercise addiction is an obligatory and must-be-done training regimen. This book is the first to attempt to explain the significant differences between passion and addiction in sports and exercise, as well as the relationship between the two.

This book presents an overview of three dimensions of passion and offers a new frame to contextualize exercise addition. The work also addresses the misinterpretation of certain aspects of training (e.g., intensity, frequency, and commitment) often related to the risk of exercise addiction. After introducing the health benefits of exercise, the book looks at the passion for sports and exercise training and the transition into maladaptive practice. Then it presents definitions and theoretical models for exercise addiction. It then examines exercise addiction cases while also illustrating how excessive or high exercise volumes could be beneficial instead of problematic. The last chapter offers a new approach for a better understanding of exercise addiction.

Passion and Addiction in Sports and Exercise is helpful for students, researchers, and clinicians interested in sport and exercise psychology, athletic training, behavioral addictions, and physical education. As well as being valuable reading for all regular exercisers and physically active individuals, including athletes competing at various levels in different sport disciplines.

Examining the fascinating relationship between ECE countries, Europe and the world, ?gh outlines the future of democracy in the region, exploring perspectives of re-democratization by the new generation raised under the auspices of EU democracy.

Declining Democracy in East-Central Europe provides researchers in both political and European studies with a unique insight into the rapidly diverging pathways of European democracies. ?gh's detailed approach to the ECE region will also benefit experts in regional studies, moving beyond political narratives of individual countries and analysing the region as a whole.

Knock Three Times and Ask for Attila【電子書籍】[ Jamey Gittings ]

This is a work of science and fantasy that chronicles the lives and trajectories of 15 young people with Down Syndrome who are subjects in a federal gene replacement therapy experiment that makes the subjects not only as smart as normal (typical) people, but far smarter-geniuses, in fact.

The narrator, Mason Free, tells the story of his personal transformation from "retard to genius," documenting the progress of the group as it becomes a shadow global intellectual force. Often irreverent and sometimes politically incorrect, Mason and his cohorts grapple with cultural and personal biases, the nature of intellect itself, and what it means to be vulnerable, while addressing the societal ills of climate change, environmental destruction, cultural and racial prejudice, wealth inequality, and religious intolerance. Along the way, Mason falls in love and reflects on the nature and power of that love, not only for his girlfriend, Holly, but for his divorced parents, and humanity in general. The story, informed by the author's own experiences in the field and burnished by imagination, is by turns hopeful and cynical, a work of fiction and a stark warning.

Transcending Physical Consciousness - Ohm and Amen【電子書籍】[ Attila Vincent ]

Like many of you; I had some questions about life as most of us have asked. The usual stuff; like why am I here, what is it all about ? and how did it all start? They are good questions for an awakening aware mind; which is why children ask such questions ? until we condition it out of them.

This led me to seek outside the narrow parameters of dogmatic faith, as well as dogmatic science. I started to realize that we have been fed the "short version" of both; whether deliberately, or due to the limitations placed upon free thought in both academia and theology.

It was then I received a "metaphysical education" while having several near death experiences caused by my heart. Words can not express such experiences adequately. Briefly stated; the experiences taught me some facts about our consciousness - not being solely a physical phenomenon.

When I survived my dark night ? I emerged a more thoughtful and contemplative person as a result. Driven to understand my experiences; I sought out all the available information and studied it with a newfound vigour. I did not however limit my seeking of truth and knowledge to any single belief system, or any single scientific explanation.

I instinctively knew; that the information I sought was not to be found in the standard sources of accepted science and religion ? because for the most part they denied such effects and/or shrouded them in mysterious forms of dogma. Religion and science both say what happened to me either couldn't happen ? or if it did it was "evil" because it conflicted with the dogma.

If you have the guts to go where you are encouraged not to go; and are willing to unfetter yourself from limiting belief systems ? I think I can explain the above conundrums. Not only that; but I am sure I can empower many of you to actually experience and understand our conscious journey ? because surely under this thin physical disguise ? there exists a pervasive metaphysical conscious element.

This conscious element is you, and the proof is indeed everywhere to be seen once we "get it." I spend my life trying to help people see this great truth which was revealed to me when I had no heartbeat. I can experientially verify this; and back this up intuitively with science ? not to mention convict the existing institutions with circumstantial evidence alone. Sin and Salvation Merchants beware; the age of reason is nigh.

I am a dangerous man because of what I know. Being old and not overtly healthy or afraid of much; coupled with knowing the truth about spirit continuance ? makes me pretty hard to push around. I have zero fear anymore. I still strive to survive and derive maximum benefit from my experience because I know how this works ? but I know we all die by design and that it isn't as big of a deal as we are convinced it is.

When I was within seconds from having no heartbeat, the first thing "The Voice" told me was that no matter what happens to us in this life ? we have nothing to fear. The exact verbs were; "Don't worry no matter what happens ? you'll be fine." There is a volume of information to be derived from those scant few words alone ? but there is much more.

There was no ambiguity as to the Source of the Voice ? it was what we call God. But; and this is a big but ? our definition and conception for it was still stuck in the mud of the dark ages intellectually. It was how you would explain it to a child, comparative to what I experienced.

A society all too content with a weak concept for spirituality, and a society with science perched on a mystery pile in fear of collapse ? is what we are living in. The great truths about the true nature of reality, and the full unified theory science seeks ? are one and the same. Trust me we are not there yet! There are just as many "don't ask questions" in the scientific community, as there are in a church.

The Scourge of God: The Lives and Legacies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan【電子書籍】[ Charles River Editors ]

*Includes maps of Genghis Khan's and Attila's empires and pictures depicting the two men and other important people and places in their lives.*Discusses legends and controversies surrounding the lives, deaths, and legacies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan.*Includes a Bibliography of each man for further reading.*Includes a Table of Contents. Attila, Emperor of the Hunnic Empire and thus most commonly known as Attila the Hun, is an idiosyncratic figure who has become more myth than man, not least because much of his life is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most famous barbarian in history, Attila was the lord of a vast empire spanning two continents and was often referred to as the Scourge of God, but he is best remembered for what he did not conquer. Though he seemingly had Rome at his mercy in 452, he ultimately decided not to sack the Eternal City, and a year later he had suffered a mysterious death. What is known about Attila came mostly from Priscus, a guest of his court who wrote several books about Attilas life in Greek. Unfortunately, much of that work was lost to history, but not before the ancient writer Jordanes relied on it to write his own overexaggerated account of Attilas life. And like their leader, the Huns themselves are an instantly recognizable name with mysterious origins; most of what is known about the Huns came from Chinese sources thousands of miles and an entire continent away from Italy. Naturally, the dearth of information and the passage of time have allowed myths and legends to fill in the most important details of Attilas life. Why did a man at war with the Roman Empire for so long decide not to sack Rome in 452? Did a meeting with Pope Leo the Great convince him to spare the capital of the Western half of the empire? Did a vision from St. Peter induce Attila to convert to Christianity? Was Attila murdered by his new bride? Many authors and chroniclers have provided many answers to the many questions, but the lack of answers has allowed Attila to become the face of ancient barbarity and the embodiment of the furious nomadic conqueror. In a world fascinated by men like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan is one of historys greatest and most famous conquerors. No man, before or since, has ever started with so little and gone on to achieve so much. From a noble family but raised in poverty that drove him to the brink of starvation, Genghis Khan rose to control the second-largest empire the world has ever known (the largest being, arguably, the British Empire of the 18th and 19th centuries), and easily the largest empire conquered by a single man. And while many empires disintegrate upon the death of an emperor, like Attilas, Genghis Khans empire endured and was actually enlarged by his successors, who went on to establish dynasties that in some cases lasted for centuries.Though history is usually written by the victors, the lack of a particularly strong writing tradition from the Mongols ensured that history was largely written by those who Genghis Khan vanquished. Because of this, Genghis Khans portrayal in the West and the Middle East has been extraordinarily (and in many ways unfairly) negative for centuries, at least until recent revisions to the historical record. He was far more complex than the mere brute that his negative portrayals indicate. The Scourge of God discusses the facts, myths, and legends surrounding the lives, deaths and conquests of Attila and Genghis Khan, examining the historical record and the way in which their legacies were shaped, all in an attempt to separate fact from fiction. Along with pictures and bibliographies, you will learn about Attila and Genghis like never before.

ARGUMENTS YARD THIRTY FIVE YEARS OF RANTING VERSE AND THRASH MANDOLA【電子書籍】[ ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER ]

Launched into public consciousness by John Peel in the early 1980s, poet, musician, journalist and political activist Attila the Stockbroker has since spent thirty five years touring the world as a self-sustaining, one man DIY cottage industry. Having performed over three thousand gigs in twenty four countries, releasing thirty records and seven books of poetry along the way, he pauses here to relate his life story, a tale of ranting verse, punk rock and his relationship with the ever changing, increasingly corporate minded politics of the last five decades. An autobiography like no other, 'Arguments Yard' bounces effortlessly from frontline tales of touring East Germany, the first ever punk performance in Stalinist Albania, being thrown out of one of his own gigs and the ongoing fight - often literally - with the fascist thuggery which blighted the punk rock scene to more homely anecdotes concerning his coastal upbringing and love of his home in West Sussex, his involvement with Brighton and Hove Albion FC and his journey into a career which has lasted far longer than the ranting verse fad which spawned it. Full of humour and intellect, and peppered with encounters with notable figures, 'Arguments Yard' demonstrates a depth rarely found in the everyday performer's autobiography, and relates an important social history, being a left wing activist's eyewitness journey through the great political battles and movements of recent times. Rock Against Racism, the Anti Nazi League, the miners' strikes, the Wapping dispute, Red Wedge, the Poll Tax and campaigns against two Gulf Wars are all analysed from a ring side perspective before the author packs his bags and takes us on another tour of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA or Europe. Now a long established Glastonbury regular, a legend of his much beloved football club and the organiser of his own hugely popular beer and music festival, Glastonwick, Attila The Stockbroker remains as focussed and active as ever and continues to perform around a hundred gigs a year to diverse audiences across the English speaking world. His message is a simple one: you don't need to be 'a celebrity' to lead a life earning your living doing what you love to do. You just need a way with words, the self-confidence and organizational ability of Napoleon and skin thicker than the armour of a Chieftain tank. 'Arguments Yard' is the perfect antidote to the countless fake tan splattered and empty headed celebrity autobiographies that increasingly fill the nation's bookshelves.

Designing Technology, Work, Organizations and Vice Versa【電子書籍】[ Enrico Attila Bruni ]

The concept of design has been defined in a multitude of ways and used in a variety of academic fields, ranging from the classics of organizational and system design to studies on corporate culture, aesthetics and consumption. However, in mainstream organization and management studies, the concept of design has been ‘black-boxed’ and easily implied as an updated (and more fashionable) version of the traditional idea of structuring organizational processes. At the same time, working and organizing seem to be embedded nowadays in increasingly complex and situated technologies and practices. If the spreading of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has changed workplaces (and even the very meaning of 'workplace' as an area marked by the physical presence of different human actors), working and organizing mobilizes the joint action of humans, technologies and knowledges. The aim of the book is thus to discuss the relations among technologies, work and organisations from multiple theoretical perspectives and to engage with questions about design as well as the sociomaterial foundations of working and organising. The book focuses on the close study of practices and processes that inextricably link work and organisation to the use of artefacts and technological systems (and vice versa), exploring by means of different cases of organizational and design research articulations and disarticulations of daily work and design; the doing of objects and technologies in everyday organizational life; the reconstruction of organizational processes through technological and design practices; the relation between learning, innovations and technologies in organizational settings.
The book is addressed to graduate students, PhDs, scholars and researchers interested in the fields of Organization Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology and Design, as well as to professionals and practitioners interested in new methodological approaches towards the relations between technology, work and organization.

Conspiracy Science and Religious Heresy【電子書籍】[ Attila Vincent ]

First a warning; my concepts deal with an expanded understanding of God, I curse, I go outside mainstream in thinking, and if you are easily offended stop here so I don't do so! If you are open minded and free thinking, dig in and enjoy, I don't want to wound anyone's inner child!

To me the biggest questions have always been, why are we here, what exactly are we, and where do we go after we pass on? This also leads a thinking person to include what is the purpose of all these processes? While it is a big bite to take, and more than a mouthful to chew, there are obvious answers and conclusions to be found. The way I found to do this was to start from scratch with a "fresh" open viewpoint, climbing out of the box to improve perspective, and looking at the bigger picture over all.

All the brightest pioneers took issue with the existing theories since they lack many answers, and are nothing more than observations. How things really work, or shall we say the "fundamental principles upon which they operate," is the key to understanding the workings of life. When we base our understanding of things on "flawed" existing ideas, we can not, and will not, ever uncover the truth about the issues we seek answers for.

The reason for this is as plain as the nose on your face! We all have to start questioning the validity of the information that we base formulas, science, and yes even the "Soul" upon! When you cannot achieve an answer or satisfactory outcome no matter how you crunch the input facts or figures, it becomes necessary to re-examine the input information. This is disturbing and a problem for many people, who insist on merely re-working the existing inputs of accepted sources.

Sadly many are afraid to question the validity of the information they base their beliefs on. When I re-examined my beliefs, I made sure I really started at square one, as not to build on anything I had previously accepted, and thereby merely re-working the old. Why do you think you are just supposed to accept it as so, and the "Bible says" and that's just the way it is? Society breeds "Sheeple" and it isn't accidental.

These people for the most part mean us no harm, they just have no clue or idea or answer to give you, so we are told to just accept it! I wanted more, and I started at square one! Where's the missing information? Where we didn't look of course!

Let's start with our processing unit, or our brain. The first thing to consider is that we don't use some 90+% of our brain, or are at least unable to designate understandable function to. Right off the bat 9/10ths of the processing unit appears to not function or not be required for operation! We run on under 10% of our capabilities to live our lives, therefore we are infants mentally, and have a lot to learn, mankind is a "baby" as yet I think.

Science is now starting to show that an invisible "quantum energy" is powering atoms, as well as biological functions of cells and DNA, growth patterns, instincts, and speculate likewise us! Eternal forces outside of space/time, and powerful invisible energies, also make up a large part of our existence, unknown to us.

The universe as well only shows us 10% or less of what it consists of! "Dark Energy" and "Dark Matter" are needed to explain the dynamics and energy of the universe. This is not in dispute, cosmology requires and observes the effects, and it just can't see it! The point is that from the atom, to the universe itself, at least 90% of the answers are not there until you know where to look, and the answers often lie in what we cannot see.

“A luxurious meal, served on silver plate, had been made ready for us and the barbarian guests, but Attila ate nothing but meat on a wooden trencher. In everything else, too, he showed himself temperate; his cup was of wood, while to the guests were given goblets of gold and silver. His dress, too, was quite simple, affecting only to be clean. The sword he carried at his side, the latchets of his Scythian shoes, the bridle of his horse were not adorned, like those of the other Scythians, with gold or gems or anything costly.” ? The Migration Turn and Eastern Europe A Global Historical Sociological Analysis【電子書籍】[ Attila Melegh ]

Using Marxist and Polanyian frameworks, this bookexamines the structural and discursive transformation that can explain the polarization of migration debates and within the rise of nationalist anti-migrant discourses in Europe with a special attention to Eastern Europe and Hungary. It goes beyond the mainstream explanations of these phenomena that uses nationalist propaganda as causal factors and instead argues that the rise of anti-immigration currents cannot be understood without a dialectical and historical analysis of the material and discursive transformations, most importantly marketization and related reification. Drawing from thinkers such as Luk?cs, Polanyi, and Gramsci as well as diverse empirical sources including demographic studies, historical modelling, and discourse analyses, Migration Turn and Eastern Europe is a unique and rigorous study of one of the most pressing and puzzling political and sociological questions of ourtime.

The Rise of Hungarian Populism State Autocracy and the Orb?n Regime【電子書籍】[ Attila Antal ]

Under the tenure of Prime Minister Viktor Orb?n, the political system in Hungary has moved significantly in an autocratic direction, yet there is a lack of research explaining the historical context, political landscape and drive behind this shift.

This book offers a deep historical and theoretical investigation into how this authoritarian, populist regime has evolved. Backlash from globalization in the 21st century, dissatisfaction with the European Union and international fiscal institutions have created a situation in which Orban’s regime is able to thrive. New kinds of autocracy cannot be properly understood without a thorough analysis of Eastern Europe’s development in the 20th century and the neoliberal agenda before and after the regime changes. There is a major oversight in the contemporary literature regarding the historical and theoretical origins of right-wing authoritarian populism in Hungary.

This book explores the main factors behind the Orb?n regime including the country’s authoritarian populist past, the charismatic charm of populist leaders, and cooperation between neoliberal and state autocracy. By providing a thoroughly researched historical narrative and offering an alternative critique of right-wing populism, this text will prove invaluable for researchers seeking to understand Eastern European history and politics, as well as populism, authoritarianism and neoliberalism more broadly.

Attila and the Huns【電子書籍】[ Edward Hutton ]

In these words, Claudian the poet of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, describes the Huns of the fifth century, the brood of Attila to whom the German Kaiser appealed before the whole world when he sent his brother to China to meet the Boxers:ー “When you meet the foe you will defeat him. No quarter will be given, no prisoners will be taken. Let all who fall into your hands be at your mercy. Just as the Huns a thousand years ago under the leadership of Attila gained a reputation in virtue of which they still live in historic tradition, so may the name of Germany become known in such a manner in China that no Chinaman will ever again dare even to look askance at a German.” These words will never be forgotten, for they have since been translated into action not only upon the Chinese but upon the body of Europe, upon the Belgians and the people of Northern France as upon the long martyred people of Poland. That appeal to the Hun startled Europe, and yet had we remembered the history of Prussia, had we recalled the ethnology of that race we ought not to have been surprised, for the Hun and the Prussian have certainly much in common even racially, and Attila, or Etzel, as the Germans call him, has ever played his part in the Nibelungenlied and the legends of the Prussian people. We know so little of the Huns of the fifth century: who they were, whence indeed they came and whither they went, that it is impossible definitely to assert or to deny that the Prussians of to-day are their actual descendants. We must, it seems, give up the old theory which Gibbon took from De Guignes that this savage people were identical with the Hioung-nou whose ravages are recorded in the history of China; but of this at least it seems we may be sure, that they were a Turanian race, a race to which the Finns, Bulgarians and Magyars also belong as well as the Croatians and the Turks. Can we with any certainty claim that the Prussians also are of this family? Quatrefages has demonstrated that the population of the Prussias is by its ethnological origin essentially Finno-Slavian. In every respect, he asserts, and history bears him out, Prussia is ethnologically distinct from the peoples she now rules over under the pretence of a unity of race with them. Identity of language may mask this truth, but it cannot alter it, for the difference is real and fundamental.

The Battle of the Catalaunian Fields AD 451 Flavius Aetius, Attila the Hun and the Transformation of Gaul【電子書籍】[ Evan Michael Schultheis ]

A reassessment of the famous fifth-century clash between Hun and Roman forces: " An excellent job of research with original documents." ー The Past in Review

This book reconsiders the evidence for Attila the Hun's most famous battle, the climax of his invasion of the Western Roman Empire that had reached as far as Orleans in France. Traditionally considered one of the pivotal battles in European history, saving the West from conquest by the Huns, the Catalaunian Fields is here revealed to be significant but less immediately decisive than claimed.

This new study exposes oversimplified views of Attila's army, which was a sophisticated and complex all-arms force, drawn from the Huns and their many allies and subjects. The 'Roman' forces, largely consisting of Visigoth and Alan allies, are also analyzed in detail. The author, a reenactor of the period, describes the motives and tactics of both sides. Drawing on the latest historiography and research of the primary sources, and utilizing Roman military manuals, Evan Schultheis offers a completely new tactical analysis of the battle and a drastic reconsideration of Hun warfare, the Roman use of federates, and the ethnography of the Germanic peoples who fought for either side. The result is a fresh and thorough case study of battle in the fifth century.

Includes maps and illustrations
