|

Situation Assessment in Aviation focuses on new aspects of soft computing technologies for the evaluation and assessment of situations in aviation scenarios. It considers technologies emerging from multisensory data fusion (MSDF), Bayesian networks (BN), and fuzzy logic (FL) to assist pilots in their decision-making.

Studying MSDF, BN, and FL from the perspective of their applications to the problem of situation assessment, the book discusses the development of certain soft technologies that can be further used for devising more sophisticated technologies for a pilot's decision-making when performing certain tasks: airplane monitoring, pair formation, attack, and threat. It explains the concepts of situation awareness, data fusion, decision fusion, Bayesian networks, fuzzy logic type 1, and interval type 2 fuzzy logic. The book also presents a hybrid technique by using BN and FL and a unique approach to the problem of situation assessment, beyond visual range and air-to-air combat, by utilizing building blocks of artificial intelligence (AI) for the future development of more advanced automated systems, especially using commercial software.

The book is intended for aerospace R&D engineers, systems engineers, aeronautical engineers, and aviation training professionals.
Placing evolutionary events in the context of geological time is a fundamental goal in paleobiology and macroevolution. In this Element we describe the tripartite model used for Bayesian estimation of time calibrated phylogenetic trees. The model can be readily separated into its component models: the substitution model, the clock model and the tree model. We provide an overview of the most widely used models for each component and highlight the advantages of implementing the tripartite model within a Bayesian framework.

Practical Bayesian Inference A Primer for Physical Scientists【電子書籍】[ Coryn A. L. Bailer-Jones ]
|

Science is fundamentally about learning from data, and doing so in the presence of uncertainty. This volume is an introduction to the major concepts of probability and statistics, and the computational tools for analysing and interpreting data. It describes the Bayesian approach, and explains how this can be used to fit and compare models in a range of problems. Topics covered include regression, parameter estimation, model assessment, and Monte Carlo methods, as well as widely used classical methods such as regularization and hypothesis testing. The emphasis throughout is on the principles, the unifying probabilistic approach, and showing how the methods can be implemented in practice. R code (with explanations) is included and is available online, so readers can reproduce the plots and results for themselves. Aimed primarily at undergraduate and graduate students, these techniques can be applied to a wide range of data analysis problems beyond the scope of this work.

|

Bayesian inference networks, a synthesis of statistics and expert systems, have advanced reasoning under uncertainty in medicine, business, and social sciences. This innovative volume is the first comprehensive treatment exploring how they can be applied to design and analyze innovative educational assessments.

Part I develops Bayes nets’ foundations in assessment, statistics, and graph theory, and works through the real-time updating algorithm. Part II addresses parametric forms for use with assessment, model-checking techniques, and estimation with the EM algorithm and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). A unique feature is the volume’s grounding in Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework for assessment design. This “design forward” approach enables designers to take full advantage of Bayes nets’ modularity and ability to model complex evidentiary relationships that arise from performance in interactive, technology-rich assessments such as simulations. Part III describes ECD,situates Bayes nets as an integral component of a principled design process, and illustrates the ideas with an in-depth look at the BioMass project: An interactive, standards-based, web-delivered demonstration assessment of science inquiry in genetics.

This book is both a resource for professionals interested in assessment and advanced students. Its clear exposition, worked-through numerical examples, and demonstrations from real and didactic applications provide invaluable illustrations of how to use Bayes nets in educational assessment. Exercises follow each chapter, and the online companion site provides a glossary, data sets and problem setups, and links to computational resources.

An intermediate-level treatment of Bayesian hierarchical models and their applications, this book demonstrates the advantages of a Bayesian approach to data sets involving inferences for collections of related units or variables, and in methods where parameters can be treated as random collections. Through illustrative data analysis and attention to statistical computing, this book facilitates practical implementation of Bayesian hierarchical methods.

The new edition is a revision of the book Applied Bayesian Hierarchical Methods. It maintains a focus on applied modelling and data analysis, but now using entirely R-based Bayesian computing options. It has been updated with a new chapter on regression for causal effects, and one on computing options and strategies. This latter chapter is particularly important, due to recent advances in Bayesian computing and estimation, including the development of rjags and rstan. It also features updates throughout with new examples.

The examples exploit and illustrate the broader advantages of the R computing environment, while allowing readers to explore alternative likelihood assumptions, regression structures, and assumptions on prior densities.

Features:

Provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of applied Bayesian hierarchical modelling

Includes many real data examples to illustrate different modelling topics

R code (based on rjags, jagsUI, R2OpenBUGS, and rstan) is integrated into the book, emphasizing implementation

Software options and coding principles are introduced in new chapter on computing

Programs and data sets available on the book’s website

The Significance Test Controversy Revisited The Fiducial Bayesian Alternative【電子書籍】[ Bruno Lecoutre ]
|

The purpose of this book is not only to revisit the “significance test controversy,”but also to provide a conceptually sounder alternative. As such, it presents a Bayesian framework for a new approach to analyzing and interpreting experimental data. It also prepares students and researchers for reporting on experimental results. Normative aspects: The main views of statistical tests are revisited and the philosophies of Fisher, Neyman-Pearson and Jeffrey are discussed in detail. Descriptive aspects: The misuses of Null Hypothesis Significance Tests are reconsidered in light of Jeffreys’ Bayesian conceptions concerning the role of statistical inference in experimental investigations. Prescriptive aspects: The current effect size and confidence interval reporting practices are presented and seriously questioned. Methodological aspects are carefully discussed and fiducial Bayesian methods are proposed as a more suitable alternative for reporting on experimental results. In closing, basic routine procedures regarding the means and their generalization to the most common ANOVA applications are presented and illustrated. All the calculations discussed can be easily carried out using the freeware LePAC package.

Bayesian Designs for Phase I-II Clinical Trials【電子書籍】[ Ying Yuan ]

Reliably optimizing a new treatment in humans is a critical first step in clinical evaluation since choosing a suboptimal dose or schedule may lead to failure in later trials. At the same time, if promising preclinical results do not translate into a real treatment advance, it is important to determine this quickly and terminate the clinical evaluation process to avoid wasting resources.

Bayesian Designs for Phase I?II Clinical Trials describes how phase I?II designs can serve as a bridge or protective barrier between preclinical studies and large confirmatory clinical trials. It illustrates many of the severe drawbacks with conventional methods used for early-phase clinical trials and presents numerous Bayesian designs for human clinical trials of new experimental treatment regimes.

Written by research leaders from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, this book shows how Bayesian designs for early-phase clinical trials can explore, refine, and optimize new experimental treatments. It emphasizes the importance of basing decisions on both efficacy and toxicity.

This up-to-date overview of Bayesian nonparametric statistics provides both an introduction to the field and coverage of recent research topics, including deep neural networks, high-dimensional models and multiple testing, Bernstein-von Mises theorems and variational Bayes approximations, many of which have previously only been accessible through research articles. Although Bayesian posterior distributions are widely applied in astrophysics, inverse problems, genomics, machine learning and elsewhere, their theory is still only partially understood, especially in complex settings such as nonparametric or semiparametric models. Here, the available theory on the frequentist analysis of posterior distributions is outlined in terms of convergence rates, limiting shape results and uncertainty quantification. Based on lecture notes for a course given at the St-Flour summer school in 2023, the book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in statistics and probability.

Modelling Spatial and Spatial-Temporal Data A Bayesian Approach【電子書籍】[ Robert P. Haining ]
|

Modelling Spatial and Spatial-Temporal Data: A Bayesian Approach is aimed at statisticians and quantitative social, economic and public health students and researchers who work with spatial and spatial-temporal data. It assumes a grounding in statistical theory up to the standard linear regression model. The book compares both hierarchical and spatial econometric modelling, providing both a reference and a teaching text with exercises in each chapter. The book provides a fully Bayesian, self-contained, treatment of the underlying statistical theory, with chapters dedicated to substantive applications. The book includes WinBUGS code and R code and all datasets are available online.

Part I covers fundamental issues arising when modelling spatial and spatial-temporal data. Part II focuses on modelling cross-sectional spatial data and begins by describing exploratory methods that help guide the modelling process. There are then two theoretical chapters on Bayesian models and a chapter of applications. Two chapters follow on spatial econometric modelling, one describing different models, the other substantive applications. Part III discusses modelling spatial-temporal data, first introducing models for time series data. Exploratory methods for detecting different types of space-time interaction are presented followed by two chapters on the theory of space-time separable (without space-time interaction) and inseparable (with space-time interaction) models. An applications chapter includes: the evaluation of a policy intervention; analysing the temporal dynamics of crime hotspots; chronic disease surveillance; and testing for evidence of spatial spillovers in the spread of an infectious disease. A final chapter suggests some future directions and challenges.

Forecasting International Migration in Europe: A Bayesian View【電子書籍】[ Jakub Bijak ]
|

International migration is becoming an increasingly important element of contemporary demographic dynamics and yet, due to its high volatility, it remains the most unpredictable element of population change. In Europe, population forecasting is especially difficult because good-quality data on migration are lacking. There is a clear need for reliable methods of predicting migration since population forecasts are indispensable for rational decision making in many areas, including labour markets, social security or spatial planning and organisation. In addressing these issues, this book adopts a Bayesian statistical perspective, which allows for a formal incorporation of expert judgement, while describing uncertainty in a coherent and explicit manner. No prior knowledge of Bayesian statistics is assumed. The outcomes are discussed from the point of view of forecast users (decision makers), with the aim to show the relevance and usefulness of the presented methods in practical applications.

Bayesian Statistics The Basics【電子書籍】[ Thomas J. Faulkenberry ]
|

Bayesian Statistics: The Basics provides a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to Bayesian statistics, specifically tailored for any researcher with an interest in statistical methods. It covers the theoretical foundations of Bayesian inference, contrasting it with classical statistical methods like null hypothesis significance testing. The book emphasizes key concepts such as prior and posterior distributions, Bayes’ theorem, and the Bayes factor, making them understandable even for readers with minimal mathematical backgrounds.

Methodologically, the book offers practical, step-by-step guides on how to conduct Bayesian analyses using the free software package JASP. Each chapter focuses on applying Bayesian methods to common research designs with real-world data. Readers will benefit from the clear examples, visualizations, and JASP screenshots that ensure the learning experience is interactive and easy to follow.

Full of practical content, the book emphasizes the advantages of Bayesian model comparison over traditional approaches, especially in quantifying evidence for competing hypotheses. Readers will also learn how to perform sensitivity analyses to assess the impact of different prior assumptions on their results.

By the end of the book, readers will get both the theoretical understanding and practical skills to implement Bayesian methods in their own research, making it an invaluable resource for both novice and experienced researchers studying Bayesian statistics.

An Introduction to Bayesian Inference, Methods and Computation【電子書籍】[ Nick Heard ]
|

These lecture notes provide a rapid, accessible introduction to Bayesian statistical methods. The course covers the fundamental philosophy and principles of Bayesian inference, including the reasoning behind the prior/likelihood model construction synonymous with Bayesian methods, through to advanced topics such as nonparametrics, Gaussian processes and latent factor models. These advanced modelling techniques can easily be applied using computer code samples written in Python and Stan which are integrated into the main text. Importantly, the reader will learn methods for assessing model fit, and to choose between rival modelling approaches.

|

This book reviews nonparametric Bayesian methods and models that have proven useful in the context of data analysis. Rather than providing an encyclopedic review of probability models, the book’s structure follows a data analysis perspective. As such, the chapters are organized by traditional data analysis problems. In selecting specific nonparametric models, simpler and more traditional models are favored over specialized ones.

The discussed methods are illustrated with a wealth of examples, including applications ranging from stylized examples to case studies from recent literature. The book also includes an extensive discussion of computational methods and details on their implementation. R code for many examples is included in online software pages.

Bayesian Models of the Mind【電子書籍】[ Michael Rescorla ]
|

Bayesian decision theory is a mathematical framework that models reasoning and decision-making under uncertain conditions. The Bayesian paradigm originated as a theory of how people should operate, not a theory of how they actually operate. Nevertheless, cognitive scientists increasingly use it to describe the actual workings of the human mind. Over the past few decades, cognitive science has produced impressive Bayesian models of mental activity. The models postulate that certain mental processes conform, or approximately conform, to Bayesian norms. Bayesian models offered within cognitive science have illuminated numerous mental phenomena, such as perception, motor control, and navigation. This Element provides a self-contained introduction to the foundations of Bayesian cognitive science. It then explores what we can learn about the mind from Bayesian models offered by cognitive scientists.
