In Maurice Maeterlinck's enchanting play, "The Blue Bird," readers are drawn into a whimsical yet profound exploration of happiness and the human spirit. Written in a symbolist style, the narrative follows Tyltyl and Mytyl, two children on a quest to find the eponymous Blue Bird, a symbol of bliss. Through vivid imagery and allegorical characters, Maeterlinck constructs a rich tapestry of dreams and spiritual awakening, urging the audience to contemplate the essence of true contentment amidst life's ephemeral pleasures. The play, first staged in 1908, emerges as a beacon of early 20th-century literature, resonating with themes of introspection and the transformative power of imagination. Maurice Maeterlinck, a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist, was deeply influenced by the philosophical currents of his time, particularly those concerning existentialism and mysticism. His illustrious career, marked by a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, showcases his quest to uncover deeper truths behind existence and interpersonal connections. Inspired by his own introspective nature and affinity for the metaphysical, Maeterlinck sought to illuminate the path to enlightenment through accessible yet profound narratives like "The Blue Bird." The Inner Bird Anatomy and Evolution【電子書籍】[ Gary W. Kaiser ]

Birds are among the most successful vertebrates on Earth. An important part of our natural environment and deeply embedded in our culture, birds are studied by more professional ornithologists and enjoyed by more amateur enthusiasts than ever before. However, both amateurs and professionals typically focus on birds’ behaviour and appearance and only superficially understand the characteristics that make birds so unique.

The Inner Bird introduces readers to the avian skeleton, then moves beyond anatomy to discuss the relationships between birds and dinosaurs and other early ancestors. Gary Kaiser examines the challenges scientists face in understanding avian evolution - even recent advances in biomolecular genetics have failed to provide a clear evolutionary story. Using examples from recently discovered fossils of birds and near-birds, Kaiser describes an avian history based on the gradual abandonment of dinosaur-like characteristics, and the related acquisition of avian characteristics such as sophisticated flight techniques and the production of large eggs. Such developments have enabled modern birds to invade the oceans and to exploit habitats that excluded dinosaurs for millions of years.

While ornithology is a complex discipline that draws on many fields, it is nevertheless burdened with obsolete assumptions and archaic terminology. The Inner Bird offers modern interpretations for some of those ideas and links them to more current research. It should help anyone interested in birds to bridge the gap between long-dead fossils and the challenges faced by living species.

Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her ageーand has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”ーJames Baldwin

In "The Bird of Time," Sarojini Naidu masterfully weaves a tapestry of lyrical verse that captures the essence of Indian culture and the universal human experience. This evocative collection, largely composed during the early 20th century, showcases Naidu's unique ability to blend Indian themes with Western literary forms, further enriched by her adept use of natural imagery and musical rhythm. The poems reflect a deep appreciation for nature and love, while also addressing social issues, a characteristic of Naidu's broader literary context, which sought to illuminate the struggles and aspirations of her time. Sarojini Naidu, often hailed as the "Nightingale of India," was a prominent freedom fighter, poet, and first female governor in independent India. Born in 1879 to a progressive family, her multifaceted background in art and politics undeniably influenced her writing. Naidu's experiences abroad and her position within the Indian independence movement provided her with a keen insight into the interplay of cultural identity and political consciousness, both of which resonate throughout her poetry. I got up and essentially wrote down the outline for it right then and there. The inspiration came from an 85-year old neighbor I had when I lived in Nagano Prefecture who was also a writer and plant lover. She collected sansai every spring and introduced me to some of my favorite wild plants..

Statistics

In 2018 Japan saw 31 million visitors from abroad, a 3 million increase from the previous year. Days to Remember: The British Empire in the Great War (Illustrated) The Causes of the War; A Bird's-Eye View of the War; The Turn at the Marne; The Western Front; Behind the Lines; Victory【電子書籍】[ John Buchan ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "Days to Remember: The British Empire in the Great War (Illustrated)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "It is never easy to fix upon one cause as the origin of a great war, and the war of 1914 was the outcome of several causes combined. For twenty years there had been growing up in Europe a sense of insecurity; the great Powers had become restless and suspicious of one another . . ." (Excerpt) The British Army during World War I fought the largest and most costly war in its long history. Unlike the French and German Armies, its units were made up exclusively of volunteersーas opposed to conscriptsーat the beginning of the conflict. Furthermore, the British Army was considerably smaller than its French and German counterparts. Yet the army showed exemplary valour and courage on the battlefield. Buchan and Newbolt bring their expert analysis into their overview of the Great War and the reasons for it. John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. With the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan worked as a correspondent in France for The Times. Sir Henry John Newbolt (1862?1938) was an English poet, novelist and historian. He also had a very powerful role as a government adviser. He is perhaps best remembered for his poems "Vita? Lampada" and "Drake's Drum".
