“He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”

Catherine Earnshaw had no idea that the boy her father took in from the streets of Liverpool would one day become her lover, her soul mate. Nor did she know that her decision to marry someone else would send him down the path of destruction.

Once a novel criticised for its display of mental and physical cruelty, Wuthering Heights is now a considered a 19th century classic. It’s themes of gender inequality and violence driven by passion still resonate with readers today.

The Legend Classics series:
Around the World in Eighty Days
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Importance of Being Earnest
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Metamorphosis
The Railway Children
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Frankenstein
Wuthering Heights
Three Men in a Boat
The Time Machine
Little Women
Anne of Green Gables
The Jungle Book
The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories
Dracula
A Study in Scarlet
Leaves of Grass
The Secret Garden
The War of the Worlds
A Christmas Carol
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Heart of Darkness
The Scarlet Letter
This Side of Paradise
Oliver Twist
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Treasure Island
The Turn of the Screw
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Emma
The Trial
A Selection of Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe
Grimm Fairy Tales
The Awakening
Mrs Dalloway
Gulliver’s Travels
The Castle of Otranto
Silas Marner
Hard Times

|

Jane Eyre
Charlotte BRONT? (1816 - 1855)

Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Bront?. It was published on 16 October 1847, by Smith, Elder & Co. of London, England, under the pen name "Currer Bell." The first American edition was published the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York.

Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its title character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall. In its internalisation of the action---the focus is on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility, and all the events are coloured by a heightened intensity that was previously the domain of poetry---Jane Eyre revolutionised the art of fiction. Charlotte Bront? has been called the 'first historian of the private consciousness' and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism.

Reception

According to a review of Jane Eyre in The Quarterly Review, it was found to be "pre-eminently an anti-Christian composition". Although Bront? clearly intended for the book to be a protest against Victorian lifestyle, which caused a great unrest with the Quarterly Review, they found Jane Eyre to be more radical than its original intent: "We do not hesitate to say that the tone of mind and thought which has overthrown authority and violated every code human and divine abroad, and fostered Chartism and rebellion at home, is the same which has also written Jane Eyre". Although Jane Eyre is now commonly accepted into the canon of secondary school English literature, its immediate reception was in stark contrast to its modern-day reception. In 2003 the novel was ranked number 10 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

Charlotte Bront? - Gesammelte Werke Entdeckungen in der viktorianischen Romantik: Heldinnen, Geheimnisse und der Kampf um Unabh?ngigkeit【電子書籍】[ Charlotte Bront? ]

|

Les Hauts de Hurle-Vent (Edition Int?grale - Version Enti?rement Illustr?e)

* Inclus une courte biographie d' Emily Bront?

R?sum?

About this book:
Jane Eyre (originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography) is a novel by English writer Charlotte Bront?. It was published on 16 October 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London, England.

It tells the story of a plain governess (Jane) who, after early life difficulties, falls in love with her employer, Mr Rochester. They marry, but only after Rochester's insane first wife (of whom Jane initially had no knowledge) dies in a dramatic house fire. In its internalization of the action ー the focus is on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility and all the events are colored by a heightened intensity that was previously the domain of poetry ー the novel revolutionized the art of fiction. Charlotte Bront? has been called the 'first historian of the private consciousness' and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust.

The novel begins with the titular character Jane Eyre living with her maternal uncle's family, the Reeds, as her uncle's dying wish. The novel starts when Jane is ten years old and several years after her parents died of typhus. Mr. Reed was the only one in the Reed family to be kind to Jane. Jane’s aunt Sarah Reed does not like her, treats her worse than a servant and discourages and, at times, forbids her children from associating with Jane. Mrs. Reed and her three children are abusive to Jane, both physically and emotionally. The servant Bessie proves to be Jane's only ally in the household even though Bessie sometimes harshly scolds Jane. Excluded from the family activities, Jane is incredibly unhappy with only a doll and occasionally books in which to find solace. One day, Jane is locked in the red room, where her uncle died, and panics after seeing visions of him. She is finally rescued when she is allowed to attend Lowood School for Girls, after the physician Mr. Lloyd convinces Mrs. Reed to send Jane away. Before Jane leaves, she confronts Mrs. Reed and declares that she'll never call her "aunt" again, that Mrs. Reed and her daughters, Georgiana, and Eliza are deceitful and that she'd tell everyone at Lowood how cruelly Mrs. Reed treated her...
(source: Wikipedia)

About the author:
Charlotte Bront? (21 April 1816 ? 31 March 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bront? sisters who survived into adulthood, whose novels are English literature standards. She wrote Jane Eyre under the pen name Currer Bell.

Speculation about the identity of Currer Bell and whether the author was male or female heightened with the publication of Emily Bront?'s Wuthering Heights by "Ellis Bell" and Anne Bront?'s Agnes Grey by "Acton Bell". Accompanying the speculation was a change in the critical reaction to Charlotte's work and accusations were made that the writing was "coarse", a judgment more readily made once it was suspected that "Currer Bell" was a woman. However sales of Jane Eyre continued to be strong, and may have increased as a result of the novel developing a reputation as an 'improper' book.
(source: Wikipedia)

About the Midwest Journal Writers' Club:
This was created by popular request to enable any beginning or established author to improve their skills by studying quality editions of classic bestselling fiction. Villette Exploring Love, Loneliness, and Identity in Victorian Society【電子書籍】[ Charlotte Bront? ]
|

Charlotte Brontë's "Villette" is a profound exploration of the themes of isolation, identity, and the complexities of feminine experience in a patriarchal society. Set in the fictional town of Villette, the narrative follows the journey of Lucy Snowe, a strong-willed yet deeply introspective protagonist who seeks independence and self-discovery in a foreign land. Brontë employs a stream of consciousness technique, rich emotional depth, and vivid characterizations, which situate the novel within the Victorian literary tradition while pushing boundaries of conventional storytelling. The novel'??s exploration of psychological realism and the subtle interplay of social class adds layers of meaning, making it both a poignant personal narrative and a critique of societal norms. Charlotte Brontë, alongside her sisters, emerged as a formidable voice in 19th-century literature amid an era that often marginalized women'??s writings. Her own experiences, including the isolation she felt and her struggles against societal expectations as a woman and a writer, significantly influenced the themes she tackles in "Villette." This semi-autobiographical work reflects Brontë'??s profound understanding of the challenges faced by women, showcasing her keen insights into the intersection of personal and social identity.
The Professor was the first novel by Charlotte Bront?.

The book is the story of a young man, William Crimsworth, and is a first-person narrative from his perspective. It describes his maturation, his loves and his eventual career as a professor at an all-girls school.

The novel is based upon Charlotte Bront?'s experiences in Brussels, where she studied as a language student and was a teacher in 1842. Much of the subject matter of The Professor was later reworked, from the perspective of a female teacher, into Bront?'s novel Villette, which received critical acclaim.

The Professor was originally written before Jane Eyre and rejected by many publishing houses, but was eventually published posthumously in 1857 by approval of Arthur Bell Nicholls, who accepted the task of reviewing and editing of the novel.

Charlotte Bront? (1816-1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bront? sisters who survived into adulthood, and whose novels have become classics of English literature.

Charlotte wrote her first novel, The Professor, which did not appear until after her death (it was first published in 1857), and began Jane Eyre, which, appearing in 1847, took the public by storm. It was followed by Shirley in 1849, and Villette in 1853.

The novels of Charlotte created a strong impression from start, their strength and originality have retained for them a high place in English fiction which is likely to prove permanent.

Charlotte became pregnant soon after her marriage in 1854 but her health declined rapidly.

This carefully crafted ebook: "Tales of the Islanders" contains the complete 4 volumes of tales in one collection and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The four volumes of tales collected here make delightful reading, while offering a unique insight into Bront? family life and Charlotte's development as a writer: these are the stories she and her siblings imagined for their magic island kingdom. The stories are charmingly written in a very fairytale-esque style. They are written by a child and therefore are sometimes hard to follow when the stories make big turns, which force the reader to read them slowly and devour each sentence. Charlotte Bront? (1816 ? 1855), English writer noted for her novel Jane Eyre (1847) and sister of Anne Bront? and Emily Bront?. The three sisters are almost as famous for their short, tragic lives as for their novels. In their works they described love more truthfully that was common in Victorian age England. In the past 40 years Charlotte Bront?'s reputation has risen rapidly, and feminist criticism has done much to show that she was speaking up for oppressed women of every age.

|

Agnes Grey is the debut novel of English author Anne Bront? (writing under the pen name of Acton Bell), first published in December 1847. The novel follows Agnes Grey, a governess, as she works within families of the English gentry. Scholarship and comments by Anne's sister Charlotte Bront? suggest the novel is largely based on Anne Bront?'s own experiences as a governess for five years. Like her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman.
The choice of central character allows Anne to deal with issues of oppression and abuse of women and governesses, isolation and ideas of empathy. An additional theme is the fair treatment of animals. Agnes Grey also mimics some of the stylistic approaches of bildungsromans, employing ideas of personal growth and coming to age, but representing a character who in fact does not gain in virtue.

Anne Bront? (17 January 1820 ? 28 May 1849) was an English novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Bront? literary family.
Partly because the re-publication of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was prevented by Charlotte Bront? after Anne's death, she is not as well known as her sisters. However, her novels, like those of her sisters, have become classics of English literature.
Anne died at about two o'clock in the afternoon, Monday, 28 May 1849, after a bout with tuberculosis that lasted only a few months.
Sally McDonald of the Bront? Society said in 2013, "In some ways though she is now viewed as the most radical of the sisters, writing about tough subjects such as women's need to maintain independence and how alcoholism can tear a family apart."
