Madame Bovary (Classic Unabridged Edition) Psychological Novel from the prolific French writer, known for Salammb?, Sentimental Education, Bouvard et P?cuchet, Three Tales, November【電子書籍】[ Gustave Flaubert ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "Madame Bovary (Classic Unabridged Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Madame Bovary is the French writer Gustave Flaubert's debut novel. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was a notorious perfectionist and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the precise word"). Madame Bovary takes place in provincial northern France, near the town of Rouen in Normandy. The story begins and ends with Charles Bovary, a stolid, kindhearted man without much ability or ambition. Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was an influential French writer who was perhaps the leading exponent of literary realism of his country. The celebrated short story writer Maupassant was a prot?g? of Flaubert.

This carefully crafted ebook: "Bouvard and P?cuchet" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Bouvard et P?cuchet details the adventures of two Parisian copy-clerks, Fran?ois Denys Bartholom?e Bouvard and Juste Romain Cyrille P?cuchet, of the same age and nearly identical temperament. They meet one hot summer day in 1838 by the canal Saint-Martin and form an instant, symbiotic friendship. The work resembles the earlier Sentimental Education in that the plot structure is episodic, giving it a picaresque quality. Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was an influential French writer who was perhaps the leading exponent of literary realism of his country. He is known especially for his first published novel, Madame Bovary and for his scrupulous devotion to his style and aesthetics.

On rit, ?

According to Wikipedia: "Bouvard et P?cuchet is an unfinished satirical work by Gustave Flaubert, published in 1881 after his death in 1880. Although conceived in 1863 as Les Deux Cloportes ("The Two Woodlice"), and partially inspired by a short story of Barth?lemy Maurice (Les Deux Greffiers, "The Two Court Clerks", which appeared in La Revue des Tribunaux in 1841 and which he may have read in 1858), Flaubert did not begin the work in earnest until 1872, at a time when financial ruin threatened. Over time, the book obsessed him to the degree that he claimed to have read over 1500 books in preparation for writing itーhe intended it to be his masterpiece, surpassing all of his other works. He only took a minor break, in order to compose Three Tales in 1875?76. It received lukewarm reviews: critics failed to appreciate both its message and its structural devices."

Nowhere do Flaubert's explorations of the relation of signs to the objects they signify reach a more thorough study than in this work. Bouvard and P?cuchet systematically confuse signs and symbols with reality, an assumption that causes them much suffering, as it does for Emma Bovary and Fr?d?ric Moreau. Yet here, due to the explicit focus on books and knowledge, Flaubert's ideas reach a climax. Consequently, the book is widely read as a precursor to modern theories on semiotics and postmodernism. The relentless failure of Bouvard and P?cuchet to learn anything from their adventures raises the question of what is knowable. Whenever they achieve some small measure of success (a rare occurrence), it is the result of unknown external forces beyond their comprehension. In this sense, they strongly resemble Antony in The Temptation of St. Anthony, a work which addresses similar epistemological themes as they relate to classical literature. Lionel Trilling wrote that the novel expresses a belief in the alienation of human thought from human experience. The worldview that emerges from the work, one of human beings proceeding relentlessly forward without comprehending the results of their actions or the processes of the world around them, does not seem an optimistic one. But given that Bouvard and P?cuchet do gain some comprehension of humanity's ignorant state (as demonstrated by their composition of the Dictionary of Received Ideas), it could be argued that Flaubert allows for the possibility of relative enlightenment.

Bouvard and P?cuchet: A Tragi-comic Novel of Bourgeois Life, part 1 by Gustave Flaubert is a satirical masterpiece that delves into the follies and absurdities of the bourgeoisie. The novel follows the lives of two clerks, Bouvard and P?cuchet, who, upon inheriting a fortune, decide to leave their monotonous jobs and pursue a life of intellectual and practical endeavors.

Their journey begins with enthusiastic attempts to master various fields of knowledge and practice, from agriculture and medicine to philosophy and literature. However, their lack of expertise and the overwhelming complexity of each subject lead to a series of comical failures. Despite their earnest efforts, Bouvard and P?cuchet's ventures often end in disaster, highlighting the limitations of amateur dabbling and the unpredictability of human endeavors.

Flaubert's keen eye for detail and sharp wit shine through as he critiques the pretensions and superficiality of the middle class. The novel is rich with irony and humor, making it a delightful yet thought-provoking read. Through the misadventures of his protagonists, Flaubert explores themes of knowledge, ambition, and the human condition.

Bouvard and P?cuchet is a testament to Flaubert's literary genius and his ability to blend tragedy and comedy. This first part of the novel sets the stage for a broader exploration of the characters' quest for meaning and understanding in a complex world. It remains a classic of French literature and a biting commentary on the pursuit of intellectual fulfillment.

BOUVARD & P?CUCHET A Satirical Novel【電子書籍】[ Gustave Flaubert ]

Gustave Flaubert's "Bouvard & P?cuchet" is a richly layered satirical novel that dissects the folly of unexamined knowledge and the human tendency toward intellectual mimicry. Set in post-Napoleonic France, the narrative follows two clerks who, after coming into an unexpected inheritance, embark on a quixotic quest to master every discipline from philosophy to agriculture, only to be met with inevitable failure. Flaubert employs a meticulous literary style characterized by precise and evocative language, creating a biting critique of the superficiality of self-education and the pitfalls of social pretension. The narrative structureーan ensemble of personal failures intertwined with cultural commentaryーplaces the work in the context of 19th-century realism, capturing the zeitgeist of a society in flux, striving for enlightenment amidst its own absurdities. Born into a society polarized by class and intellectualism, Flaubert himself was an ardent critic of the bourgeoisie, which significantly influenced the themes of "Bouvard & P?cuchet." His own experiences with education and the prevailing Romantic ideals shaped his perspective, prompting him to explore the contrast between genuine knowledge and the hollow pursuit of it. Flaubert's disillusionment with contemporary culture and his quest for authenticity manifest in this work, revealing his deep-seated belief in the importance of rigorous thought. This novel stands as a powerful recommendation for readers seeking to explore the intersections of endeavor and futility, offering a humorous yet poignant examination of the human condition. Flaubert's acute insights invite readers to reflect on their own intellectual pursuits and societal roles. "Bouvard & P?cuchet" ultimately serves as a timeless reminder of the complexities of knowledge, making it an essential addition to the library of any serious literature enthusiast.

"Bouvard and P?cuchet" is a satirical work by Gustave Flaubert.
"Bouvard and P?cuchet" details the adventures of two Parisian copy-clerks, Fran?ois Denys Bartholom?e Bouvard and Juste Romain Cyrille P?cuchet, of the same age and nearly identical temperament. They meet one hot summer day in 1838 by the canal Saint-Martin and form an instant, symbiotic friendship.
When Bouvard inherits a sizable fortune, the two decide to move to the countryside. They find a large property near the town of Chavignolles in Normandy. Their search for intellectual stimulation leads them, over the course of years, to flounder through almost every branch of knowledge.
Flaubert uses their quest to expose the hidden weaknesses of the sciences and arts, as nearly every project Bouvard and P?cuchet set their minds on comes to grief. Their endeavours are interleaved with the story of their deteriorating relations with the local villagers; and the Revolution of 1848 is the occasion for much despondent discussion. The manuscript breaks off unfinished near the end of the novel.
