The novel tells the story of a young man named Candide, who is raised in the optimistic philosophy of his mentor, Pangloss. According to Pangloss, this is the best of all possible worlds, and everything that happens, no matter how tragic or absurd, is ultimately for the greater good. However, Candide's journey takes him through a series of calamities, including wars, natural disasters, personal tragedies, and encounters with hypocrisy and injustice. As Candide experiences one misfortune after another, the novel uses humor, irony, and satire to expose the flaws and contradictions of the optimistic worldview. Voltaire uses Candide's experiences to challenge the belief that the world is inherently good and that everything happens for a specific purpose. Instead, he presents a harsh and often absurd reality, questioning the legitimacy of blindly accepting optimism in the face of human suffering and injustice.Through various episodes and encounters, Candide encounters different characters who embody different aspects of society and philosophy. Voltaire criticizes religious intolerance, corrupt governments, social inequality, and the hypocrisies of the intellectual elite. The novel serves as a scathing critique of established institutions and prevailing beliefs of the time."Candide" is known for its sharp wit, fast-paced narrative, and the use of satire to expose the follies of the world. It tackles significant philosophical themes such as the nature of evil, the problem of suffering, the role of reason, and the pursuit of happiness. Voltaire's writing style is characterized by his ability to use humor and irony to convey serious and critical ideas.

It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism (or simply Optimism) by his mentor, Pangloss. The work describes the abrupt cessation of this lifestyle, followed by Candide's slow, painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. As expected by Voltaire, Candide has enjoyed both great success and great scandal. Today, Candide is recognized as Voltaire's magnum opus and is often listed as part of the Western canon; it is likely taught more than any other work of French literature.
"If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are the others?" - CANDIDE

Candide is a French satire first published in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. It is the absurdly melodramatic story of a young man, Candide, living a sheltered life who clings desperately to “the best of all possible worlds,” one which is abruptly interrupted by a series of painfully disillusioning events that set him off on a wide-ranging journey. The sudden cessation of his idyllic lifestyle is followed by Candide’s slow, painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences calamity upon calamity as he is forced into the army, flogged, shipwrecked, betrayed, robbed, separated from his beloved and tortured by the inquisition.

Through his erratic, fantastical, fast-moving plot, Voltaire employs a sarcastic tone and dark humor to ridicule religion, and theologians, governments, armies, philosophies and philosophers. The events discussed are often based on historical happenings, such as the Seven Years’ War and the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The story parodies Candide’s many adventure and romance cliches, which are caricatured in a caustic matter-of-fact tone. Candide finds that contrary to the teachings of his distinguished tutor Dr. Pangloss, all is not always for the best.

Widely banned for religious blasphemy, political sedition, and intellectual hostility hidden under a thick veil of naivete, Candide has endured scandal along with great success. Alive with sharp wit, brilliance, graceful storytelling and an insightful portrayal of the human condition, the novel has inspired many later authors and artists. It has become Voltaire’s most celebrated work.

In the course of his travels and adventures in Europe and South America, Candide saw and suffered such misfortune that it was difficult for him to believe this was "the best of all possible worlds" as Dr. Pangloss had assured him. Indeed, it seemed to be quite the opposite. In brilliantly skewering such na?vet?, Voltaire mercilessly exposes and satirizes romance, science, philosophy, religion, and government ー the ideas and forces that permeate and control the lives of men. After many trials and travails, Candide is reunited with Cunegonde, his sweetheart. He then buys a little farm in Turkey where he and Cunegonde, Dr. Pangloss and others all retire. In the end, Candide decides that the best thing in the world is to cultivate one's own garden.
Saint Francis of Assisi represented the poor and peace, just as the newly elected Pole Francis who reportedly chose the name of St. Francis for his virtues of truth and goodness. This book follows the story of Saint Francis, the son of a wealthy Venetian banker who joined the poor in a pilgrimage to Rome, rejected his worldly life, and began preaching on the streets. The book is a well written reliable resource, instructive, elevating and inspiring. The facts and legends mentioned are drawn from the oldest and most reliable sources. The abundance of incidents and anecdotes not to be found elsewhere make the volume eminently interesting, while the reflections and applications which the author now and then interweaves with the narrative are so replete with practical hints on spiritual life, that they will undoubtedly produce the best spiritual results in the reader.

We live in an era rife with cultural conflict. The 21st century is by no means free of wars, terrorism, riots, famine, nor epidemics. We may attempt to solve the challenges of our times by uniting the humanistic disciplines of philosophy, science, and technology. Our modern reality requires a fundamental understanding of the problems beleaguering our existence. Science and literature are key tools for gaining this insight. The wisdom accumulated throughout the centuries by scientists, philosophers, and writers is a solid foundation on which modern man can build the future. Our ability to learn from those who have come before is precisely what led Protagoras to declare that "Man is the measure of all things." The 33 works in this book possess foundational importance and continue to influence our modern world.
“Candide” is Voltaire’s most famous work, a satirical masterpiece, which was first published in 1759. It is the story of its central character, the titular Candide, who lives a sheltered comfortable life and has been indoctrinated into the philosophy of Leibnizian optimism, by his mentor, Professor Pangloss. When Candide travels throughout the world he begins to witness the pervasive hardships of life, an experience that leads to his ultimate disillusionment with Leibnizian philosophy. Through this clever narrative Voltaire refutes the philosophy of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, whose central idea was that despite the apparent imperfections of the world, it was the best of all possible worlds because it was created by an all powerful and all knowing God. Voltaire found this philosophy insultingly ridiculous and within the humorous and satirical construct of this work he effectively exposes the idiocy of a philosophy that was so pervasive in his time. “Candide” is a fast-moving and fantastical tale which established Voltaire as not only one of the most important but controversial authors of his time. This edition is illustrated by Adrien Moreau and includes introductions by Philip Littell and J. M. Wheeler.

Candide is a French satire first published in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: or, Optimism (1947). Voltaire concludes with Candide, if not rejecting optimism outright, advocating an enigmatic precept, "we must cultivate our garden", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds".

'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' - that's the essence of Voltaire's 'Candide'. For, like the ever-upbeat character in 'Monty Python's Life of Brian', the eponymous Candide is taught that everything is for the best. The young Frenchman must not grumble, grimace or lose heart.

However, when he is cast out for falling for the daughter of a Baron, his sunny disposition is sorely tested by global disasters including earthquakes, the Inquisition and syphilis.

'Candide' was initially banned because of blasphemy and political sedition. But the satire has since become one of the great novels in European history.

Candide or Optimism【電子書籍】[ Voltaire ]

A little while back, after a 40-year career in publishing, I sat down to enjoy reading my favorite French classics, but this time in English. I was amazed and very displeased to find that even the most expensive editions offered less than totally accurate translation of the works; not to mention many translator's mania to go off on their own tangent, adding new wordsーor phrasesーto the author's original text. Let us be clear, the classics are such because the authors were brilliant writers who took great care in choosing accurate words; when I read Voltaire I am not interested in reading a translator's middling description of a scene, or a translator's clarification of a word or name of a personage mentioned in the text. So, I ventured, as a hobby and to amuse myself, to give some of these classic books my own translated version, unadulterated and without my own interpretation of the text; just pure and straightforward translation of the text as the author wrote it.
