Dhammapada Collection of Verses; Being One of the Canonical Books of the Buddhists【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

Dhammapada is a collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. The original version of the Dhammapada is in the Khuddaka Nikaya, a division of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. Each saying recorded in the collection was made on a different occasion in response to a unique situation that had arisen in the life of the Buddha and his monastic community. The book presents the details of these events and is a rich source of legend for the life and times of the Buddha. The title, "Dhammapada," is a compound term composed of dhamma and pada, each word having a number of denotations and connotations. Generally, dhamma can refer to the Buddha's "doctrine" or an "eternal truth" or "righteousness" or all "phenomena"; and, at its root, pada means "foot" and thus by extension, especially in this context, means either "path" or "verse"

Canonical commutation relations (CCR) and canonical anti-commutation relations (CAR) are basic principles in quantum physics including both quantum mechanics with finite degrees of freedom and quantum field theory. From a structural viewpoint, quantum physics can be primarily understood as Hilbert space representations of CCR or CAR. There are many interesting physical phenomena which can be more clearly understood from a representation?theoretical viewpoint with CCR or CAR. This book provides an introduction to representation theories of CCR and CAR in view of quantum physics. Particular emphases are put on the importance of inequivalent representations of CCR or CAR, which may be related to characteristic physical phenomena. The topics presented include general theories of representations of CCR and CAR with finite and infinite degrees of freedom, the Aharonov?Bohm effect, time operators, quantum field theories based on Fock spaces, Bogoliubov transformations, and relations of infinite renormalizations with inequivalent representations of CCR.
The "Dhammapada, a Collection of Verses" is a seminal text in Buddhist literature, encapsulating the essence of the Buddha's teachings through a series of poignant and accessible verses. Written in a poetic style that reflects the oral traditions of ancient India, the text emphasizes ethical conduct, mental discipline, and the pursuit of enlightenment. As a part of the Pali Canon, this work is not only foundational for understanding Buddhist philosophy but also serves as a profound spiritual guide, emphasizing core concepts such as mindfulness, compassion, and the nature of suffering. Its informal yet profound tone invites both scholarly inquiry and personal reflection, making it a significant work for those exploring Buddhism's rich textual heritage. The anonymity of the author reflects the traditional Buddhist perspective on teaching, where the message transcends the messenger. Emerging from a historical milieu steeped in spiritual inquiry and moral exploration, the Dhammapada represents collective wisdom rather than individual authorship. Influenced by the socio-cultural transformations of 5th-century BCE India, the verses articulate a universal quest for truth and inner peace, resonating with seekers across generations. This collected work is highly recommended for both scholars and general readers interested in spiritual development and ethical living. Its concise verses distill complex ideas into practical advice, inviting readers to cultivate mindfulness in their daily lives. Whether one is delving into Buddhism for the first time or seeking to deepen an existing practice, the Dhammapada provides indispensable insights into the nature of existence and the path to liberation.

Hebraica veritas versus Septuaginta auctoritatem Does a Canonical Text of the Old Testament Exist?【電子書籍】[ Ignacio Carbajosa ]

At the end of the fourth century, Jerome decided to translate the Old Testament into Latin from the Hebrew manuscripts that were available to him, and not from the "traditional" Greek text. This fact provoked a reaction from Augustine, who considered that the Greek translation of the LXX must be the starting point of every translation, since it had the authority of the apostles. The two great figures of the Latin West engaged in a dialectical battle in which we find clearly delineated the two principles which are in tension and which have determined the reception of the biblical text down to our time: the value of the "original" text (hebraica veritas) and the authority of the text received by the church (Septuaginta auctoritas). In facing this "battle," we are dealing with some very up-to-date questions: Is it possible to speak of a canonical text of the Old Testament? In what language is that text? On what text should our liturgical translations be based? Is there an "original" text of the Bible? Can an ancient version be superior to the text it is translating? What is the value of the LXX?

The Formation and Transmission of the Canonical Gospels【電子書籍】[ Walter Smith ]

This work provides an in-depth exploration of the formation, transmission, and reception of the canonical Gospels within early Christian communities. Beginning with the historical context surrounding the writing and spread of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, it traces the theological, historical, and ecclesiastical significance of these texts. The Gospels not only served as foundational documents for early Christian faith but also played a crucial role in shaping Christian identity, doctrine, and practice. The analysis covers key theological themes such as the nature of Jesus, the Kingdom of God, salvation, and the ethical teachings of the Gospels, which deeply influenced early Christian moral thought and liturgy. It also delves into the reception of the Gospels, highlighting the process of canonization, the role of the Church Fathers in interpreting and defending these texts, and their centrality in the development of Christian orthodoxy. Through an examination of the diverse ways in which the Gospels were interpreted, read, and utilized in early Christian worship, the work outlines how these texts formed the foundation of Christian theology, doctrine, and ecclesiastical structure, shaping the course of Christian history from its inception to its eventual establishment as the dominant religion in the Roman Empire.

The Infancy Narratives of Jesus in the Canonical and Apocryphal Gospels【電子書籍】[ Walter Smith ]

The infancy narratives of Jesus, those captivating and often tender stories of His birth and early life, are central to Christian tradition and theology. These narratives, while primarily found in the canonical Gospels of Matthew and Luke, extend their reach far beyond these texts and have been subjects of contemplation, elaboration, and interpretation for centuries. Their importance is not only religious but also cultural, influencing art, liturgy, music, and literature. To appreciate these narratives fully, it is crucial to place them within their historical and theological contexts and to examine both their canonical and apocryphal forms. In doing so, we begin to understand the ways in which early Christian writers shaped and shared their vision of who Jesus was, how He came into the world, and what His birth meant for humanity.

In Your Mouth and In Your Heart A Study of Deuteronomy 30:12?14 in Paul’s Letter to the Romans in Canonical Context【電子書籍】[ Colin J. Smothers ]

Paul's use of Deuteronomy 30 in Romans 10 has puzzled interpreters and led to many divergent readings. In this book, Smothers argues that what Paul has found in Deuteronomy 30:11-14 is a prophetic promise of righteousness which he declares fulfilled in the gospel of the Lord Jesus, the message of the righteousness of faith. By quoting Deuteronomy 30:12-14 in Romans 10 as the content of the message of the righteousness of faith over against Leviticus 18:5 and the righteousness of the law in Romans 10:5-8, Paul proclaims a promise fulfilled in accord with the original meaning of the text written by Moses in Deuteronomy. More precisely, Paul reads Deuteronomy 30:11-14 as an extension of the reality foretold in Deuteronomy 30:1-10, which points forward to the new covenant experience of faith-empowered obedience, or heart circumcision, which includes the internalization of the word of God--the eschatological torah--by the Spirit of God.

Constructing Paul (The Canonical Paul, vol.

First of a two-volume work providing a framework for understanding the life and thought of the apostle Paul

In this methodological tour de force, Luke Timothy Johnson offers an articulate, clear, and thought-provoking portrait of the life and thought of the apostle Paul.

Drawing upon recent developments in the study of Paul, Johnson offers readers an invitation to the Apostle Paul. Rather than focusing on a few of Paul’s letters, Johnson lays out the materials necessary to envision the apostle from the thirteen canonical letters of Paul and the Acts of the Apostles. Constructing Paul thus provides a framework within which an engagement with Paul’s letters can take place. Johnson demonstrates the possibility of doing responsible and creative work across the canonical collection without sacrificing literary or historical integrity.

By bringing out the facets of the apostle from the canonical evidence, Johnson shows the possibilities for further and better inquiry into the life and thought of Paul. This first volume imagines a plausible biography for Paul and serves as an introduction to the studies in the second volume. Constructing Paul addresses all the pertinent questions related to the study of Paul. Johnson uses the canonical material as building blocks to make a case for why Paul ought to be heard today as a liberating rather than oppressing voice.

In Christ and the New Creation, Matthew Emerson takes a fresh approach to understanding New Testament theology by using a canonical methodology. Although typically confined to Old Testament theology, Emerson sees fruitfulness in applying this method to New Testament theology as well. Instead of a thematic or book-by-book analysis, Emerson attempts to trace the primary theological message of the New Testament through paying attention to its narrative and canonical shape. He concludes that the order of the books of the New Testament emphasize the story of Christ's inauguration, commissioning, and consummation of the new creation.

Lane provides a canonical analysis of the credo of Exodus 34:6-7 and its major parallels in the Hebrew Bible. He argues that the credo was an important theological expression for the ancient Israelites and that the final form of the Tanak is marked by the use of the credo. These uses in the final form of the canon give evidence of the theological tension over the presence of the foreigners in the postexilic community. And this tension is marked by the use of the credo in texts that emphasize YHWH's covenantal relationship with ancient Israel (Torah), movement toward the nations (Prophets), and YHWH as king over the whole earth (Psalms).

Jesus Tried and True Why the Four Canonical Gospels Provide the Best Picture of Jesus【電子書籍】[ H. H. Drake Williams lll ]

Are the gospels found within the New Testament superior to others? Has the church unfairly chosen Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John while leaving out many others? Are there truly lost Christianities that would enrich our understanding of Jesus? Would modern-day seekers as well as followers of Jesus be better served by including gospels outside of the New Testament in their understanding of Jesus? Jesus Tried and True answers these questions by examining the date, source, and reception of the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and then comparing this data with the other gospels. It assesses this information by looking within these gospels and also evaluating early church history, examining the writings of early church writers such as Papias, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Eusebius. It then compares these findings with the date, source, and reception of the non-canonical gospels that have received the most attention lately such as the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Mary, Gospel of Judas, Gospel of Philip, and Gospel of Peter. There is also a brief survey of thirteen of the most important non-canonical gospels. The survey provides an opinion on the dependence of these upon the gospels within the New Testament. Jesus Tried and True affirms the superiority of the New Testament gospels. It concludes by addressing whether non-canonical gospels are "lost Christianities" and also whether the designation "apocryphal" is appropriate for other gospels.

The Drama of Doctrine A Canonical-Linguistic Approach to Christian Theology【電子書籍】[ Kevin J. Vanhoozer ]

Observing a strange disappearance of doctrine within the church, Kevin Vanhoozer argues that there is no more urgent task for Christians today than to engage in living truthfully with others before God. He details how doctrine serves the church--the theater of the gospel--by directing individuals and congregations to participate in the drama of what God is doing to renew all things in Jesus Christ. Taking his cue from George Lindbeck and others who locate the criteria of Christian identity in Spirit-led church practices, Vanhoozer relocates the norm for Christian doctrine in the canonical practices, which, he argues, both provoke and preserve the integrity of the church's witness as prophetic and apostolic.

Receiving the Council Theological and Canonical Insights and Debates【電子書籍】[ Ladislas Orsy SJ ]

Vatican II was a seminal council, both an end and a beginning. It left behind intuitive perceptions in need of precise articulation and pointed to theological values in need of structural support. Bearing in mind that Vatican II was the conclusion of one era and the opening of another, Ladislas Orsy insists that the task of the church is to continue 'with both creative insights and critical debates.

Creative insights, though never the final answer, are the indispensable stages of development that emerge as we undertake the holy exercise of trying to imagine the best possible state of the church. Creative insights demand that we think anew our perceptions of some challenging aspects of reform: the people of God, unity of Christians, communion, development, freedom, role of the laity. Creative insights emerge within the crucible of the debating community 'the sensus fidei at work to discern the true from the false with regard to such challenging things as infallibility and indefectibility of the church, synodality, collegiality, ecumenism.

Receiving the Council is a gift from a highly renowned and deeply respected canon lawyer and theologian who was an eye witness to Vatican II. Rewriting Peter as an Intertextual Character in the Canonical Gospels【電子書籍】[ Finn Damgaard ]

Peter is a fascinating character in all four canonical gospels, not only as a literary figure in each of the gospels respectively, but also when looked at from an intertextual perspective. This book examines how Peter is rewritten for each of the gospels, positing that the different portrayals of this crucial figure reflect not only the theological priorities of each gospel author, but also their attitude towards their predecessors. Rewriting Peter as an Intertextual Character in the Canonical Gospels is the first critical study of the canonical gospels which is based on Markan priority, Luke’s use of Mark and Matthew, and John’s use of all three synoptic gospels. Through a selection of close readings, Damgaard both provides a new critical portrait of Peter and proposes a new theory of source and redaction in the gospels.

In the last thirty years there has been an increasing appreciation of the gospels’ literary design and of the gospel writers as authors and innovators rather than merely compilers and transmitters. However, literary critics have tended to read each gospel individually as if they were written for isolated communities. This book reconsiders the relationship between the gospels, arguing that the works were composed for a general audience and that the writers were bold and creative interpreters of the tradition they inherited from earlier gospel sources. Damgaard’s view that the gospel authors were familiar with the work of their predecessors, and that the divergences between their narratives were deliberate, sheds new light on their intentions and has a tremendous impact on our understanding of the gospels.

Dhammapada, a Collection of Verses; Being One of the Canonical Books of the Buddhists【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

The 'Dhammapada' is a revered anthology of verses that encapsulates the essence of Buddhist teachings and ethical conduct. This canonical text, composed in Pali, presents profound insights through a series of succinct aphorisms and poetic reflections. With its lyrical simplicity and thematic exploration of virtue, mindfulness, and the nature of suffering, the 'Dhammapada' serves as both a spiritual guide and a philosophical treatise. The literary style is both accessible and profound, making it a cornerstone in the study of Buddhist literature and a powerful source for practitioners and scholars alike. The author remains anonymous, reflecting the oral tradition from which early Buddhist texts emerged. This lack of attribution underscores the communal nature of Buddhist teachings, which emphasize collective wisdom over individual authorship. The 'Dhammapada' is believed to have been compiled around the 3rd century BCE, drawing from earlier oral verses that highlight the teachings of the Buddha. Such historical context reveals the text's role in sustaining and disseminating Buddhist principles across generations. For readers seeking to deepen their understanding of Buddhist philosophy, the 'Dhammapada' is an indispensable resource. Its timeless wisdom resonates with both historical significance and contemporary relevance, offering profound moral insights and practical guidance for navigating life's challenges. This essential text invites readers into a transformative journey of self-discovery and ethical living.

The Historical Character of Jesus Canonical insights from outside the Gospels【電子書籍】[ David Allen ]

By their very nature, historical Jesus studies inevitably focus on the Gospel accounts, canonical and non-canonical alike. Scholarly portrayals so generated may vary, but the 'source material' tends to be restricted to Gospel texts, with the other NT testimony rendered secondary as result, and its 'value' limited by either genre or late dating. This book responds to this neglect by focusing specifically on non-Gospel material to see how the other texts of the NT contribute to the picture of Jesus. The book helpfully collates and reflects on the historical significance of key NT texts in relation to their presentation of Jesus, bringing them together in one place, and generating fresh perspectives on the early Jesus movement.
