The Circassian Slave, or, the Sultan's favorite A story of Constantinople and the Caucasus【電子書籍】[ Maturin M. Ballou ]
|

Maturin M. Ballou's "The Circassian Slave, or, the Sultan's Favorite" intricately weaves a tale of love, power, and cultural clashes set against the exotic backdrop of the Ottoman Empire. Utilizing a rich, descriptive literary style, Ballou immerses readers in the complexities of 19th-century society, highlighting themes of slavery, desire, and the intricate dynamics of the sultan's court. The novel reflects the Orientalist fascination of the period, presenting a vivid tableau of Circassian life while critiquing prevalent power structures, thus providing a dual lens for understanding both individual and sociopolitical dilemmas of its time. Maturin M. Ballou was a prolific American author and travel writer whose work often showcased a vibrant interest in cultures beyond the Western canon. His travels to the Middle East may have informed his narrative choices, enriching his portrayal of the Circassian experience and the often harsh realities of slavery. Ballou's background in journalism and literature enabled him to craft compelling narratives that resonate with contemporary themes of identity and agency, challenging readers to contemplate moral ambiguities. This novel is an essential read for enthusiasts of historical fiction and those keen on exploring the intersections of culture, power, and human emotion. Ballou'??s nuanced storytelling brings to life an era often obscured in modern discourse, making "The Circassian Slave" not just a tale of romance but a significant commentary on imperialism and social justice.

The Circassian Miracle: the Nation Neither Tsars, nor Commissars, nor Russia Could Stop【電子書籍】[ Adel Bashqawi ]
|

This work is dedicated to Circassia, the historical homeland of the Circassians, who inspired and encouraged emerging generations to maintain the torch of freedom and to lead the way, despite all obstacles and attempts of exclusion that have been tested over the years. Since the subjugation of their homeland, the Circassians were subjected to harsh conditions in all walks of life, which wasn’t easy to withstand and get through. This meant a dictatorial, savage, direct military and security jurisdiction, and domination for the duration of both tyrant tsarist imperial and Soviet/Communist eras. From the beginning of the 1990s on, the general situation has been quite different concerning the circumstances that the Circassian affairs have been clutched to. After decades of being forgotten, the people of the Caucasus region and the world at large have started to become enlightened with information that was prevented and blocked from the public. Even the historians, specialists, and academicians were not in the picture of the pain, destiny, and suffering that the Circassian nation was inflicted with for decades, specifically since the occupation and deportation of 1864.

|

In 'Turkish Harems and Circassian Homes,' Andr?e Hope delves into the intricate dynamics of intimacy, power, and identity within the context of Ottoman society and its ethnic minorities. The book is structured around rich narratives that combine historical accounts with sociocultural analysis, offering a vivid portrayal of the harem as both a physical space and a metaphorical concept in Turkish life. Hope's literary style is both engaging and scholarly, seamlessly weaving anecdotal evidence with broader historical themes, illuminating the complexities of gender roles and social hierarchies characteristic of this era. Andr?e Hope, a noted historian specializing in Ottoman history and Middle Eastern studies, draws on extensive fieldwork and archival research for this work. Her interest in the subject emerged from personal experiences in the region and a deep understanding of its cultural nuances, leading her to explore how ethnic identities intersected with social structures in a historically rich yet often misunderstood era. Hope's academic background equips her with the tools to critically examine and challenge prevailing narratives surrounding the lives of women in these societies. This book is an essential read for those interested in exploring the multifaceted experiences of women in the Ottoman Empire and the implications of harem culture in broader historical narratives. Hope's thoughtful examination not only informs but also invites critical reflection on contemporary issues of gender and identity, making it a vital contribution to the fields of history, women's studies, and cultural anthropology.

The Circassian Genocide【電子書籍】[ Walter Richmond ]
|

Circassia was a small independent nation on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea. For no reason other than ethnic hatred, over the course of hundreds of raids the Russians drove the Circassians from their homeland and deported them to the Ottoman Empire. At least 600,000 people lost their lives to massacre, starvation, and the elements while hundreds of thousands more were forced to leave their homeland. By 1864, three-fourths of the population was annihilated, and the Circassians had become one of the first stateless peoples in modern history.

Using rare archival materials, Walter Richmond chronicles the history of the war, describes in detail the final genocidal campaign, and follows the Circassians in diaspora through five generations as they struggle to survive and return home. He places the periods of acute genocide, 1821?1822 and 1863?1864, in the larger context of centuries of tension between the two nations and updates the story to the present day as the Circassian community works to gain international recognition of the genocide as the region prepares for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the site of the Russians’ final victory.

Circassian History【電子書籍】[ Kadir I. Natho ]
|

Circassian History relates the heroic struggle for survival of one of the most ancient nations in the world, with a unique language and a highly developed distinctive culture. Beginning from 1555, Circassian princes began seeking the friendship and protection of czarist Russia against the aggressions of the Ottoman Turks and Crimean Khans. However, Czarist Russia unleashed its colonial war against Circassia to build the necessary harbors on the Black Sea. Their Nart Epos and archeological finds of the Maikop dolmen and barrow cultures testify that the ancestors of the Circassians lived and prospered on the same territory at least since the advent of the Bronze Age. Their Homeland in North Caucasus stretched from the main ridge of the Caucasus Mountains to the northeastern Black Sea and eastern Azov seacoasts. Its northern boundaries run from Lake Manych and along the Terek Riverthe northern boundary of Kabarda. Beginning from 1555, Circassian princes began seeking the friendship and protection of czarist Russia against the aggressions of the Ottoman Turks and Crimean Khans. However, Czarist Russia unleashed its colonial aggression and conquered Circassia to build the necessary harbors on the Black Sea. Russia planned to seize Bosphorus and Dardanelles with the passage to the Mediterranean Sea, weaken the position of the Ottoman Empire, deal a powerful blow on the trade interests of Great Britain, and gain the upper hand over the European powers in the contest for world supremacy. In this unequal war, Russia occupied Kabarda in 1779. By 1822, it stripped off the Kabardinian princes of the right to rule in their own land and subjected them and their country to the dictatorship of the commanding generals of the Russian armed forces. Thus, early and masterfully, Russia had cut off Kabarda from its western kindred and then directed its military might against Western Circassia. During this period, Russia launched a powerful worldwide propaganda campaign, portraying the Circassians to the Western world as the marauding savages who should be obliterated from the face of the earth in order to ensure peace in the region. At the same time, Russia kept increasing its armed forces in this region. For example, during General Yermolovs time, Russia increased its army in this region from 5075,000, excluding the Cossacks. Russia added 47 new battalions since 1831 and another 40,000 soldiers in 1840. In short, a 210,000 Russian armies and 80,000 Cossack Cavalries were conducting military operations in Circassia during 18531856. Later, Russia reinforced it with 24,000 Russian infantry corps and 2 dragoon regiments and artillery. Russia suffered colossal losses in the Russo-Circassian War. Since the time of Catherine II to 1864, 1.5 million Russian soldiers fell in this country, excluding the Cossack losses as they were not considered a part of the regular Russian army. From the beginning until the end of the war, the Russian army had burnt and pillaged twenty, thirty, fifty, and one hundred Circassian villages at a time, destroying the harvest and driving out the cattle; the Russian army killed or uprooted the native inhabitants and settled Cossack and Russian stanitsas in the territory, according to the planned genocide. As Russian generals stated openly, Russia needed the Circassian lands, not the Circassians. Finally, Russia crushed the Circassian nation in 1864, forced them from their historical Motherland, drove them to the Black Sea shore under Russian bayonets, and threw them into the confines of the Ottoman Empire thus completing its planned genocide. At the present time, as a result of the genocide, 90 percent of the Circassian population lives scattered all over the world. They survived the planned Russian genocide, the cold, deprivations, epidemics, and other companions of their forcible exile. They became exemplary citizens of many countries, established their own new republicsAdigey, Kabardino-Balkaria

Russia's Homegrown Insurgency: Jihad in the North Caucasus - Salafi Islamist Terrorism Challenge, Caucasus Emirate (CE), Chechen Insurgency, Putin Policy, Ethnic Circassian and Akhaz fighters【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]
|

This excellent report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. The United States has had a bitter set of experiences with insurgencies and counterinsurgency operations, but it is by no means alone in having to confront such threats and challenges. Indeed, according to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the greatest domestic threat to Russia's security is the ongoing insurgency in the North Caucasus. This insurgency grew out of Russia's wars in Chechnya and has gone on for several years, with no end in sight. Yet it is hardly known in the West and barely covered even by experts. In view of this insurgency's strategic importance and the fact that the U.S. military can and must learn for other contemporary wars, the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) felt the need to bring this war to our readers' attention and shed more light upon both sides, the Islamist (and nationalist) rebels and Russia, as they wage either an insurgency or counterinsurgency campaign.

While the evident and primary cause of this current war is Russian misrule in the North Caucasus in the context of the Chechen wars, it also is true that Russia is now facing a self-proclaimed fundamentalist, Salafi-oriented, Islamist challenge, that openly proclaims its links to al-Qaeda and whose avowed aim is the detachment of the North Caucasus from the Russian Federation. Therefore, we should have a substantial interest in scrutinizing the course of this war both for its real-world strategic implications and for the lessons that we can garner by close analysis of it. The three papers presented here are by well-known experts.

Contents: 1. The Caucasus Emirate Jihadists: The Security and Strategic Implications - Gordon M. Hahn - 2. The Circassian Diaspora in Turkey A Political History【電子書籍】[ Zeynel Besleney ]
|

A North Caucasian ethnic group that has been largely obscured in world history as a result of their expulsion from their homeland by Tsarist Russia in the 1860s, Circassians now comprise significant communities not only in the Northwest Caucasus but also in Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Europe and the US. The Circassian Diaspora investigates how a community of impoverished migrants has evolved into a well-connected and politically active diaspora.

This book explores the prominent role Circassians played during the Turco-Greek War or the "Turkish National Liberation War of 1919-1922," and examines the changing nature of Circassians’ relations with the Turkish and Russian states, as well as the new actors of Caucasian politics such as the US, the EU, and Georgia.

Suggesting that the Circassian case should be studied alongside those of the Jews, Armenians and other diasporas whose formation is fundamentally tied up to a violent detachment from their homeland, and arguing that Circassian diaspora politics is not a post-Soviet phenomenon but has a history dating back to early 20th Century, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of Diaspora Studies, History, and Politics.

The novel revolves around the life and experiences of its titular character, a Circassian woman named Zuleika. Circassians were an ethnic group from the North Caucasus region who were historically known for their beauty. In the story, Zuleika is captured and enslaved, eventually becoming a favorite concubine in the harem of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The novel explores themes of love, intrigue, and the complexities of life within the harem, as well as the broader historical and cultural context of the Ottoman Empire during that period.Maturin Murray Ballou was known for his adventure novels and travel writing, and "The Circassian Slave" fits within the genre of exotic and romantic adventure fiction that was popular in the 19th century. The novel combines elements of romance and adventure with the exoticism of the Ottoman Empire and the allure of the harem. While the novel reflects the sensibilities and stereotypes of its time, it remains a historical artifact that provides insight into the fascination with the exotic Orient in 19th-century literature. The Circassian A Life of Esref Bey, Late Ottoman Insurgent and Special Agent【電子書籍】[ Benjamin C. Fortna ]
|

Esref Kus?ubasi remains controversial in Turkey over fifty years after his death. Elsewhere the man sometimes called the "Turkish Lawrence of Arabia" is far less known but his life offers fascinating insights into the traumatic, increasingly violent struggles that ended the Ottoman Empire and ushered in the modern Middle East. Drawing on Esref's private papers for the first time, these pages tell the story of the making of a headstrong "self-sacrificing" officer committed to defending the empire's shrinking borders. Esref took on a string of special assignments for Enver Pasha, the rapidly rising star of the Ottoman military, first in Libya against the Italians, then in the Balkan Wars and World War I, before being captured by the forces of the Arab Revolt and turned over to the British and imprisoned on Malta. Released in 1920, he joined the national resistance movement in Anatolia but fell out with Mustafa Kemal's leadership and switched sides, earning him banishment from the Turkish Republic at its founding and exile until the 1950s. Life of Schamyl and Narrative of the Circassian War of Independence Against Russia【電子書籍】[ John Milton Mackie ]

Circassiaーunder which name the country occupied by a great number of tribes of which the Circassians are one, is best known to foreignersーlies in the Caucasus, a range of mountains which, running in the direction between north-west and south-east, extends from the shores of the Black Sea to those of the Caspian, and divides by its wall of rock the two continents of Europe and Asia. The traveller approaching these mountains from the steppes inhabited by the Cossacks subject to Russia, beholds at a distance of thirty miles a single white conical summit towering high above the otherwise level horizon. This is the peak of Elbrus, the loftiest in the Caucasian chain, and called by the natives the Dsching Padischah, or great spirit of the mountains. Next, is seen the no less solitary top of Kasbek, situated further eastward, and its snows tinged by the first red rays of the morning. Then, the whole line of summits, "the thousand peaked," rises to view; and finally, a lower range covered with forests, and hence called the Black Mountains, draws its dark and irregular outline against the higher snows beyond. The waters shed from the northern declivities of the Caucasus, are received by two principal rivers, the Kuban and the Terek; while those which flow down on the south side are gathered into the Rion and the Kur, or ancient Cyrus. Of these streams the Kuban is the largest, and empties itself as does the Rion, into the Black Sea; the other two running eastward to the Caspian. The western portion more especially of the Black Mountains is heavily wooded. Gigantic oaks spread their branches above cliffs and summits, where in less favored climes only the cold pine would be able to find a scanty subsistence; while the spray of the Black Sea is dashed against the immense stems of the blood-wooded taxus, and the red and almond-leaved willows sweep with their long branches the waves. The box here is a giant of the forest; the stern of the juniper measures often fifteen feet in circumference; and the vine climbing to the top of the lofty elm sends its tendrils across to the neighboring beech, hanging festoons from tree-top to tree-top, and almost making of the forest one far spreading arbor.

The Circassian Chief: A Romance of Russia【電子書籍】[ William Henry Giles Kingston ]

Between the ancient and modern capitals of Russia, a fine broad road now affords an easy communication, although, but a few years ago, the traveller who would journey from one city to the other, was compelled to proceed at a slow pace, along a wild track, over rough stony ground, through swamps, under dark forests, and across bleak and unsheltered plains. The sun had already begun his downward course towards the more happy, and free lands of the far West, shedding forth his summer rays on the heads of two horsemen, who pursued their way in a southerly direction, along the yet unimproved part of the road, to which we have alluded. Their pace, as the nature of the ground over which they travelled required, was slowーtheir attention being chiefly occupied in guiding their steeds between the many deep ruts and cavities, which lay in their path. The tone of their voices, their noble bearing, and general appearance, bespoke them at a glance, to belong to a station far above the common rank of life. They were dressed alike, in a half military uniform; their arms consisting solely of pistols, and heavy riding whips the latter even no despicable weapon when wielded by a strong arm. The travellers might have been taken for brothers, but that the dark flashing eye, black hair, clear olive-complexion, and regular Grecian features of the one, offered too great a contrast to the laughing blue eye, light complexion and hair of the other, whose features, though inferior to those of his companion, were not deficient in manly beauty. There appeared to be scarcely any difference in their ages, both having emerged from boyhood, into that joyous time of life, when the man has completely shaken off what he then considers the irksome trammels of his childish days; happily, unconscious how soon in their stead, advancing years may too probably bring around him the many cares, and disappointments that flesh is doomed to bear, from manhood to the grave.

The Circassian Slave, or, the Sultan's Favorite: A Story of Constantinople and the Caucasus【電子書籍】[ Maturin Murray Ballou ]

THE SLAVE MARKET. Upon one of those hot, sultry summer afternoons that so often prevail about the banks of the Bosphorus, the sun was fast sinking towards its western course, and gilding as it went, the golden crescents of a thousand minarets, now dancing with fairy feet over the rippling waters of Marmora, now dallying with the spray of the oarsmen's blades, as they pulled the gilded caique of some rich old Mussulman up the tide of the Golden Horn. The soft and dainty scented air came in light zephyrs off the shore of Asia to play upon the European coast, and altogether it was a dreamy, siesta-like hour hat reigned in the Turkish capital. Let the reader come with us at this time into the circular area that forms the slave market of Constantinople. The bazaar is well filled; here are Egyptians, Bulgarians, Persians, and even Africans; but we will pass them by and cross to the main stand, where are exposed for sale some score of Georgians and Circassians. They are all chosen for their beauty of person, and present a scene of more than usual interest, awaiting the fate that the future may send them in a kind or heartless master; and knowing how much of their future peace depends upon this chance, they watch each new comer with almost painful interest as he moves about the area. A careless crowd thronged the place, lounging about in little knots here and there, while one lot of slave merchants, with their broad but graceful turbans, were sitting round a brass vessel of coals, smoking or making their coffee, and discussing the matters pertaining to their trade. Some came there solely to smoke their opium-drugged pipes, and some to purchase, if a good bargain should offer and a beauty be sold cheap. Here were sprightly Greeks, sage Jews, and moody Armenians, but all outnumbered by the sedate old Turks, with beards sweeping their very breasts. It was a motley crowd that thronged the slave market. Now and then there burst forth the ringing sound of laughter front an enclosed division of the place where were confined a whole bevy of Nubian damsels, flat-nostriled and curly-headed, but as slight and fine-limbed as blocks of polished ebony. They were lying negligently about, in postures that would have taken a painter's eye, but we have naught to do with then at this time

Thematic Readings On Circassian And Greek Mythology【電子書籍】[ Selcuk Baglar ]
|

A comparative reading between Greek Mythology and Circassian Mythology of Narts has not been done so far. This book has been intended to fill this gap in the field.

Among the Circassian intellectuals organized around Circassian Society of Solidarity (?erkes Teav?n Cemiyeti), founded in 1908 in Istanbul, a group was formed focusing on Mythology of Narts and Caucasian history. However, the outbreak of Balkan wars (1912-1913) and the World War I (1914-1918) affected negatively the studies of the Society. After the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, the association was closed and all its assets were confiscated. Along with the closure of Circassian Society of Solidarity, studies on mythology and history, as well as other subjects, came to an end. In terms of Circassian culture, the period from the proclamation of the Republic to 1950’s is a dead period. In this period, studies related to Circassian culture, history and mythology shifted to Europe. Circassians of Turkey, who experienced a very weak and controlled association process after 1950, still have not reached the intellectual accumulation of the Circassian Society of Solidarity, which was founded in 1908. (Picture 1.)

In the first quarter of 20th Century, the studies of Met ??nat?ko Yusuf ?zzet Pasha (1875-1922) on Greek Mythology and Circassian Mythology of Narts were followed by the studies of Mehmet Fetgeri ?oen? (1890-1931) on Mythology of Narts with Avestic texts. After the 30’s, Aytek Namitok (1892-1963) discussed the subject again.

Historical relations of Circassians with Ottoman Capital paved the way for an intellectual group based in Istanbul to come to the fore after the Second Constitutional Monarchy. These people, mostly soldiers and bureaucrats, who benefited from the education opportunities of the Empire, gathered under the umbrella of Circassian Society of Solidarity, which in some ways worked like a political party, and created works on Circassian mythology and Circassian history together with many other subjects.

Turkish Harems & Circassian Homes Exploring Gender Dynamics in Ottoman Harems & Circassian Homes【電子書籍】[ Andr?e Hope ]
|

In "Turkish Harems & Circassian Homes," Andr√?e Hope delves into the intricate social fabrics of the Near East, exploring the dichotomy between the private spaces of harems and the communal dynamics of Circassian households. Utilizing a rich tapestry of historical narratives, personal accounts, and vivid descriptions, Hope's literary style merges academic rigor with evocative storytelling, emphasizing the nuanced roles of women in these societies. The book situates its analysis within the broader context of Ottoman history and gender studies, offering a fresh perspective on cultural identity and domestic life during a period often marked by Orientalist misconceptions. Andr√?e Hope, an esteemed cultural historian whose work focuses on the intersections of gender, ethnicity, and power, has spent years studying the Ottoman Empire and Circassian identity. Her background in social anthropology and her passion for uncovering marginalized voices inform her meticulous research, allowing her to approach her subjects with both empathy and a critical lens. This scholarly endeavor stems from her commitment to illuminate the complexities of female experiences in patriarchal systems, moving beyond stereotypes to reveal the lived realities of women. I wholeheartedly recommend "Turkish Harems & Circassian Homes" to readers seeking a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural significance behind these domestic spaces. Hope'??s insightful analysis not only broadens the historical narrative but also invites contemporary reflections on gender and power dynamics, making it essential reading for students and enthusiasts of cultural history and women's studies.

Constantinople has been so often written about that it is useless to describe its lovely aspect in detail. Every one knows that there are minarets and towers rising up, in fairy-like grace, from amid gardens and cypress groves; but “he who would see it aright” should have his first view in all the bright unreality of a sunny summer morning. Soon after dawn, in the tender duskiness of the early hours, when the light steals down shyly from the veiled east, and before the business and noise of a great city begin, Constantinople is like the sleeping beauty in the wood. A great hush is over everything, broken only when the sun comes up in a blaze of light, flooding sea, earth, and city with a “glory” of life and colour. Then from each minaret is heard the voice of the muezzins, as they summon the faithful to prayers. The fairy-like ca?ques skim in every direction across the waters; and the beautifully-named but dirty and somewhat ugly Golden Horn is all astir with moving vessels. Nearly opposite the yacht was a very handsome building of white Greek marble, with an immense frontage to the sea. This is the Sultan’s palace of Dolm?-Batch?. The wing on the right, where the windows are closely barred and jealously latticed, contains the apartments of the ladies of the Imperial harem. Behind the palace, stretching up the hill and crowning its summit, are seen the white, handsome houses that form the fashionable suburb of Pera. Here ambassadors and bankers have large, comfortable hotels; here, too, are the European shops, and the promenade for the Christian world. But the part to seeーthe part that interestsーis, of course, the old Turkish quarter, Stamboul; for in Stamboul are Turks in turbans, and in Stamboul are real Turkish houses.

Twice a minority: Kosovo Circassians in the Russian Federation【電子書籍】[ Marieta Schneider ]

This book tells thestory of 64 Circassian families who during the Kosovo conflictin 1989/99 migrated from the Field of Blackbirds to the Republic ofAdygheya in the Russian North Caucasus, their historical “homeland”. It focuseson the identification process among the Kosovo Circassians before andafter this migration. In her approach, Marieta Schneider challengesthe nationalist assumptions of a non-conflicting relationship betweenidentity, ethnicity and culture and demonstrates the impact of theminority status on the identity formation of thisethnic community. By comparing national and minority politics both inex-Yugoslavia and in the USSR/Russian Federation, the author highlightsthe role linguistic, religious, cultural and social “boundaries”played in this process. The book provides new insights for thosewho study minority politics and identification processes in the Balkans, in theSoviet Union and in the post-Soviet realm.

Nart Sagas Ancient Myths and Legends of the Circassians and Abkhazians【
|

The sagas of the ancient Narts are to the Caucasus what Greek mythology is to Western civilization. This book presents, for the first time in the West, a wide selection of these fascinating myths preserved among four related peoples whose ancient cultures today survive by a thread. In ninety-two straightforward tales populated by extraordinary characters and exploits, by giants who humble haughty Narts, by horses and sorceresses, Nart Sagas from the Caucasus brings these cultures to life in a powerful epos.

In these colorful tales, women, not least the beautiful temptress Satanaya, the mother of all Narts, are not only fertility figures but also pillars of authority and wisdom. In one variation on a recurring theme, a shepherd, overcome with passion on observing Satanaya bathing alone, shoots a "bolt of lust" that strikes a rock--a rock that gives birth to the Achilles-like Sawseruquo, or Sosruquo. With steely skin but tender knees, Sawseruquo is a man the Narts come to love and hate.

Despite a tragic history, the Circassians, Abazas, Abkhaz, and Ubykhs have retained the Nart sagas as a living tradition. The memory of their elaborate warrior culture, so richly expressed by these tales, helped them resist Tsarist imperialism in the nineteenth century, Stalinist suppression in the twentieth, and has bolstered their ongoing cultural journey into the post-Soviet future.

Because these peoples were at the crossroads of Eurasia for millennia, their myths exhibit striking parallels with the lore of ancient India, classical Greece, and pagan Scandinavia. The Nart sagas may also have formed a crucial component of the Arthurian cycle. Notes after each tale reveal these parallels; an appendix offers extensive linguistic commentary. With this book, no longer will the analysis of ancient Eurasian myth be possible without a close look at the Nart sagas. And no longer will the lover of myth be satisfied without the pleasure of having read them.

Excerpts from the Nart sagas

"The Narts were a tribe of heroes. They were huge, tall people, and their horses were also exuberant Alyps or Durduls. They were wealthy, and they also had a state. That is how the Narts lived their lives. . . ."

"The Narts were courageous, energetic, bold, and good-hearted. Thus they lived until God sent down a small swallow. . . ."

"The Narts were very cruel to one another. They were envious of one another. They disputed among themselves over who was the most courageous. But most of all they hated Sosruquo. . . . A rock gave birth to him. He is the son of a rock, illegally born a mere shepherd's son. . . ."

In a new introduction, folklorist Adrienne Mayor reflects on these tales both in terms of the fascinating warrior culture they depict and the influence they had on Greco-Roman mythology.
