I'm a ghost whisperer, not a catacomb crawler. But when you live in Paris, sometimes you end up being both.

Hi, I’m Alix. During the day, I’m a history student at the time-honoured Sorbonne University. After class, I hang out with the ghosts of the revolution, the many undead misunderstood Parisian artists, and adventurous scientists that glow in the dark. None of them are alive, but they come to me to solve their problems with the living.

When a recently deceased catacomb tour guide asks me to retrieve a mysterious personal item from the underground, things take a turn for the weird. Suddenly, I find myself in a city of ghosts, hunted by murderous cave crawlers, and stumbling across haunting secrets.

If I’m not careful now, I might end up a ghost myself.

Urban Fantasy with a French twist.

You know what’s worse than being blackmailed by a secret council? My family. But somehow I was roped into a mission that required me to deal with both. If it weren’t for bad luck…well you know the rest.
Shezmu, the god of ointment with a penchant for dismembering bodies, made himself known in the catacombs by chopping up fifteen innocents and putting them on display. Despite the fact that Shezmu killed my father, the council determined I was the best person to send on this “diplomatic” mission. All I had to do was convince him to go home, thwart whatever the council’s real plan was for the contradictory god, and save the world from everyone else’s personal agendasーor as I call it, just another Tuesday.
Everything should have been simple enough, but it wasn’t. This mission was personal and when things get personal, lives change. But not always for the better.

The Art of the Roman Catacombs Themes of Deliverance in the Age of Persecution【電子書籍】[ Gregory S. Athnos ]

Every story in catacomb art is a tale of deliverance, a tale of the powerlessness of death and the certainty of the resurrection. Looking back through fifteen hundred years of Christian art, it appears the crucifixion of Jesus holds the highest place. We haven't looked back far enough. Go back to the first three centuries after Jesus walked among us. Walk the dark corridors of those subterranean burial chambers of the persecuted Christians. There we find a much different theology at work: a theology with resurrection hope and power at the center. If catacomb art were all we had of Christian theology and practice from the first three centuries AD--no Scriptures--we would have no choice but to conclude that the first message of the Christian faith was the Easter gospel.

Valeria: The Martyr of the Catacombs【電子書籍】[ William Henry Withrow ]

On a bright spring morning in the year of our Lord 303ーit was in the "Ides of March," about the middle of the month, but the air was balmy as that of June in our northern climeーtwo note-worthy-looking men were riding along the famous Appian Way, near the city of Rome The elder of the two, a man of large size and of mighty thews and sinews, was mounted on a strong and richly-caparisoned horse. He wore the armour of a Roman centurionーa lorica or cuirass, made of plates of bronze, fastened to a flexible body of leather; and cothurni, or a sort of laced boots, leaching to mid-leg. On his back hung his round embossed shield; by his side, in its sheath, his short, straight sword, and on his head was a burnished helmet, with a sweeping horsehair crest. His face was bronzed with the sun of many climes. But when, for a moment, he removed his helmet to cool his brow, one saw that his forehead was high and white. His hair curled close to his head, except where it was worn bare at his temples by the chafing of his helmet, and was already streaked with grey, although he looked not more than five-and forty years of age. Yet the eagle glance of his eye was undimmed, and his firm-set muscles, the haughty expression of his countenance, and the high courage of his bearing, gave evidence that his natural strength was not abated. His companion contrasted strongly in every respect. He had a slender, graceful figure, a mobile and expressive face, a mouth of almost feminine softness and beauty, dark and languishing eyes, and long, flowing hair. He wore a snowy toga, with a brilliant scarlet border of what is still known as "Greek fret;" and over this, fastened by a brooch at his throat, a flowing cloak. On his head sat jauntily a soft felt hat, not unlike those still worn by the Italian peasantry, and on his feet were low-laced shoes or sandals. Instead of a sword, he wore at his side a metal case for his reed-pen and for a scroll of papyrus. He was in the bloom and beauty of youth, apparently not more than twenty years of age.

The Catacombs A Novel【電子書籍】[ William Demby ]

A gripping and genre-defying novel by a rediscovered great of twentieth-century Black American writing, about what it means to be a writer at the dawn of a new era

First published in 1965, The Catacombs is a metafictional account set in early 1960s Rome, where the author had returned to study art history after serving on the Italian front during World War II.

African-American expatriate Bill Demby narrates his attempts to write a novel about his friend Doris, who is living in Rome and employed as one of Elizabeth Taylor's handmaidens in the filming of Cleopatra. Utterly dependent upon Doris for the development of his novel, he is both a participant in and observer of her life as she enters into an affair with an Italian count. Bill Demby's growing emotional and artistic involvement in the tumultuous affair of his character-friend leads him on an existential quest for the meaning of truth and fiction, both lived and created, in a world torn by the social upheaval of the early sixties.

Interrupted constantly by headlines from television and newspapers, slipping in and out of fiction and metafiction, The Catacombs is a time capsule from an era on the brink and a novel unlike any other.

In 2015 the Catholic Church is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council, a council that was a landmark in the two thousand years of the Churchs history. At the end of the Council, inspired by what was being done and said in the Council hall, some forty bishops from various countries of the world met in the Catacombs of Domitilla to sign what is today known as The Pact of the Catacombs, a text and programme that sets out the mission of the poor in the Church. The spirit of the Pact of the Catacombs has guided some of the best Christian initiatives of the last fifty years, not only in Latin America, where it had particular impact, but throughout the Catholic Church, so that its witness (its inspiration and its text) have become one of the most influential and important signs of twentieth-century Catholicism.

The Paris Catacombs A Secret History of Underground Paris【電子書籍】[ Fabrizio de Gennaro ]

Beneath the streets of Paris lies a forbidden underground world: nearly 300 kilometers of tunnels that run deeper than the city's sewers and metro lines. These mysterious passageways bear hidden traces of key moments in history ー from the French Revolution and the Paris Commune to the failed coup of 1937 by the Cagoule, the German occupation, and Cold War nuclear shelters.

The catacombs stretch 15 to 25 meters below ground, sometimes across two or three levels. Originally ancient stone quarries, they provided the materials to build many of the city’s iconic monuments. Today, these underground tunnels offer a rare glimpse into a forgotten Paris ー a city whose hidden stories remain buried beneath the surface.

Officially, only a small portion of the catacombs is open to the public: about 6 kilometers beneath the Left Bank, housing the remains of six million Parisians from the city's former cemeteries. But beyond this section, hundreds of kilometers of tunnels remain off-limits. Adventurous explorers, known as cataphiles, defy the authorities to venture inside, often accessing the network through manhole covers and hidden shafts that are frequently sealed off or reinforced.

Entry to these dark passages has long been forbidden. Yet throughout history, people have used them to hide, escape, or move discreetly through the city during turbulent times. The catacombs played a role during the French Revolution, the Paris Commune, and other uprisings ー even earning a mention in 19th-century literature and more recently in Umberto Eco’s The Prague Cemetery.

In more modern times, these tunnels served a strategic purpose. In 1937, the far-right paramilitary group known as the Cagoule attempted a little-known fascist coup from the underground. During World War II, the German occupiers built air-raid bunkers in the tunnels, while members of the French Resistance used them as a hidden headquarters during the city’s liberation. In the Cold War era, secret nuclear shelters were quietly built beneath public buildings, far from the public’s knowledge.

Since the 1980s, the catacombs have become the setting for clandestine parties, where small groups of students and thrill-seekers evade authorities and navigate this forbidden underworld ー even as the entrances are periodically sealed shut.

Exploring the Paris catacombs means diving into centuries of forgotten stories and hidden histories ー an underground city that holds the secrets of a tumultuous past.

The Beauty of the Cross The Passion of Christ in Theology and the Arts from the Catacombs to the Eve of the Renaissance【電子書籍】[ Richard Viladesau ]

From the earliest period of its existence, Christianity has been recognized as the "religion of the cross." Some of the great monuments of Western art are representations of the brutal torture and execution of Christ. Despite the horror of crucifixion, we often find such images beautiful. The beauty of the cross expresses the central paradox of Christian faith: the cross of Christ's execution is the symbol of God's victory over death and sin. The cross as an aesthetic object and as a means of devotion corresponds to the mystery of God's wisdom and power manifest in suffering and apparent failure. In this volume, Richard Viladesau seeks to understand the beauty of the cross as it developed in both theology and art from their beginnings until the eve of the renaissance. He argues that art and symbolism functioned as an alternative strand of theological expression -- sometimes parallel to, sometimes interwoven with, and sometimes in tension with formal theological reflection on the meaning of the Crucifixion and its role insalvation history. Using specific works of art to epitomize particular artistic and theological paradigms, Viladesau then explores the contours of each paradigm through the works of representative theologians as well as liturgical, poetic, artistic, and musical sources. The beauty of the cross is examined from Patristic theology and the earliest representations of the Logos on the cross, to the monastic theology of victory and the Romanesque crucified "majesty," to the Anselmian "revolution" that centered theological and artistic attention on the suffering humanity of Jesus, and finally to the breakdown of the high scholastic theology of the redemption in empirically concentrated nominalism and the beginnings of naturalism in art. By examining the relationship between aesthetic and conceptual theology, Viladesau deepens our understanding of the foremost symbol of Christianity. This volume makes an important contribution to an emerging field, breaking new ground in theological aesthetics. The Beauty of the Cross is a valuable resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the passion of Christ and its representation.
