The Paradine family has gathered to celebrate New Year's Eve. Alas, when the clock strikes twelve old Mr. James Paradine, the patriarch, is found murdered. Yet, he seemed to invite his demise when he accused a family member of disloyalty. Now, Miss Silver must unravel the mystery of troubled love and sudden death.

About Patricia Wentworth & Miss Maud Silver
Patricia Wentworth was the pseudonym of Dora Amy Dillon Turnbull, nee Elles who was born in India in 1878. She published her first novel in 1910, ‘A Marriage Under the Terror’, set in the French Revolution, which won the Melrose prize. It was the start of a prolific writing career although she was best known for her crime series featuring former governess turned private investigator, Miss Silver. The first of these, ‘The Grey Mask’ was published in 1928, two years before Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple made her first appearance in ‘The Murder at the Vicarage’. These two protagonists share many of the same characteristics ? love of knitting, listening to village gossip and in cahoots with the national if not local police. However, Maud's definitely a professional. And none of that "Oh, I'm just a wooly-headed female" schtick of Miss Marple.

Dorothea Harfield's Banjer, The Ding Dong Clocks, & Her Love of God【電子書籍】[ Robert Chapin ]

In the summer of 1959, I met Dorothea Harfield. Her father and three brothers from the hills of North Carolina were working for a logging company on our property in Massachusetts, harvesting timber.

She was not the prettiest girl, matronly and with a lazy eye was the subject of ridicule and downright prejudice in our small town. What she lacked in outer beauty she more than made up for with her inner qualities.

The Harfield family lived on our property in a company provided trailer while harvesting timber and Dorothea and I had shared our childhood. My mother recently divorced my father who was addicted to alcohol. When she re-married, it was to a fine gentleman who adopted my two sisters and me and we were now living in the "lap of luxury," and I was about to forget my roots forever. I tried to convince her that I too was poor. I was the product of two hard working Italian immigrant grandparents and how I somehow lost my way.

Since my mom's re-marriage I felt I now had reached the pinnacle of success inasmuch as I placed my values in life in material riches and Dorothea rattled my cage telling me that "God don't need your "stuff" cause' He's the richest person ever and Jesus don't care about no new fashions cause' He put you here to glorify Him and to use your "stuff" to help others."

A strong southern Christian, Dorothea was also a self taught musician. She invited me to "supper" at their modest trailer home and when Dorothea her mother, father and three brothers reached for their instruments following dinner, they tuned then broke into one of the finest performances I have ever heard of Earl Scruggs "Foggy Mountain Breakdown".

Dorothea never learned how to read music, but did show me the basics of banjo playing. I don't know where she finally settled - if at all, but from that time on, I have silently thanked Dorothea for her kindness and the new direction I have taken in life.

Biological Clocks, Rhythms, and Oscillations The Theory of Biological Timekeeping【電子書籍】[ Daniel B. Forger ]

An introduction to the mathematical, computational, and analytical techniques used for modeling biological rhythms, presenting tools from many disciplines and example applications.

All areas of biology and medicine contain rhythms, and these behaviors are best understood through mathematical tools and techniques. This book offers a survey of mathematical, computational, and analytical techniques used for modeling biological rhythms, gathering these methods for the first time in one volume. Drawing on material from such disciplines as mathematical biology, nonlinear dynamics, physics, statistics, and engineering, it presents practical advice and techniques for studying biological rhythms, with a common language.

The chapters proceed with increasing mathematical abstraction. Part I, on models, highlights the implicit assumptions and common pitfalls of modeling, and is accessible to readers with basic knowledge of differential equations and linear algebra. Part II, on behaviors, focuses on simpler models, describing common properties of biological rhythms that range from the firing properties of squid giant axon to human circadian rhythms. Part III, on mathematical techniques, guides readers who have specific models or goals in mind. Sections on “frontiers” present the latest research; “theory” sections present interesting mathematical results using more accessible approaches than can be found elsewhere. Each chapter offers exercises. Commented MATLAB code is provided to help readers get practical experience.

The book, by an expert in the field, can be used as a textbook for undergraduate courses in mathematical biology or graduate courses in modeling biological rhythms and as a reference for researchers.

Jerome K. Jerome is an English writer of the turn of the century. He is known especially for his humorous novels and travelogues, mainly his Three Men in a Boat which has made his fame and wealth. His work entitled Clocks is a humorous essay that speaks about his personal experience with clocks. In fact, the essay is an informal, entertaining investigation of the place of clocks in our modern life. It is the perfect clocks that always disappoint us according to Jerome, rather than wrong clocks. Jerome describes a modern life where people are in a continuous struggle with time while the latter always ends up winning the fight.

About Time: A History of Civilization in Twelve Clocks【電子書籍】[ David Rooney ]

A captivating, surprising history of timekeeping and how it has shaped our world.

For thousands of years, people of all cultures have made and used clocks, from the city sundials of ancient Rome to the medieval water clocks of imperial China, hourglasses fomenting revolution in the Middle Ages, the Stock Exchange clock of Amsterdam in 1611, Enlightenment observatories in India, and the high-precision clocks circling the Earth on a fleet of GPS satellites that have been launched since 1978. Clocks have helped us navigate the world and build empires, and have even taken us to the brink of destruction. Elites have used them to wield power, make money, govern citizens, and control livesーand sometimes the people have used them to fight back.

Through the stories of twelve clocks, About Time brings pivotal moments from the past vividly to life. Historian and lifelong clock enthusiast David Rooney takes us from the unveiling of al-Jazari’s castle clock in 1206, in present-day Turkey; to the Cape of Good Hope observatory at the southern tip of Africa, where nineteenth-century British government astronomers moved the gears of empire with a time ball and a gun; to the burial of a plutonium clock now sealed beneath a public park in Osaka, where it will keep time for 5,000 years.

Rooney shows, through these artifacts, how time has been imagined, politicized, and weaponized over the centuriesーand how it might bring peace. Ultimately, he writes, the technical history of horology is only the start of the story. A history of clocks is a history of civilization.

Neuroendocrine Clocks and Calendars【

This book explores how daily and seasonal rhythmicity is generated, how these rhythms are synchronised by our environment, and how they regulate the neuroendocrine systems that impact our physiology and behaviour.

The constraints of surviving in a seasonal environment have shaped human evolution and migration, have shaped our societies and cultures, and continue to influence our everyday lives, health and wellbeing. Identifying the mechanisms whereby seasonal rhythmicity is generated and regulates the brain and body is not only important for understanding the natural world and relevant to animal production, it also offers many insights into the human condition.

Each chapter is written by an international expert in the field of chronobiology. A historical perspective on how research into photoperiodism and rhythmicity progressed is initially provided, but the main focus of this book is on the remarkable studies in the last few decades that have unravelled the molecular and cellular machinery underpinning circadian and circannual timing. Topics covered include the role of melatonin in communicating seasonal information to the brain and pituitary gland, the neuroanatomical pathways in mammals, birds and fish by which changes in photoperiod reach the hypothalamus, the role of glial cells (tanycytes) and thyroid hormone in seasonal rhythmicity, neuroplasticity across seasons, effects of changing day length on mood, regulation of “clock“ gene expression, and the role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

This book will appeal to all students and researchers who wish to learn about current and past research on daily and seasonal rhythmicity.

This is the tenth volume in the International Neuroendocrine Federation (INF) Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology series (Volumes 1-7 published by Wiley) that aims to illustrate highest standards and encourage the use of the latest technologies in basic and clinical research and hopes toprovide inspiration for further exploration into the exciting field of neuroendocrinology.

An Introduction to the History of Chronobiology, Volume 3 The Search for Biological Clocks: Metaphors, Models, and Mechanisms【電子書籍】[ Jole Shackelford ]

In three volumes, historian Jole Shackelford delineates the history of the study of biological rhythmsーnow widely known as chronobiologyーfrom antiquity into the twentieth century. Perhaps the most well-known biological rhythm is the circadian rhythm, tied to the cycles of day and night and often referred to as the “body clock.” But there are many other biological rhythms, and although scientists and the natural philosophers who preceded them have long known about them, only in the past thirty years have a handful of pioneering scientists begun to study such rhythms in plants and animals seriously. Tracing the intellectual and institutional development of biological rhythm studies, Shackelford offers a meaningful, evidence-based account of a field that today holds great promise for applications in agriculture, health care, and public health. Volume 1 follows early biological observations and research, chiefly on plants; volume 2 turns to animal and human rhythms and the disciplinary contexts for chronobiological investigation; and volume 3 focuses primarily on twentieth-century researchers who modeled biological clocks and sought them out, including three molecular biologists whose work in determining clock mechanisms earned them a Nobel Prize in 2017.

Thirteen Clocks How Race United the Colonies and Made the Declaration of Independence【電子書籍】[ Robert G. Parkinson ]

In his celebrated account of the origins of American unity, John Adams described July 1776 as the moment when thirteen clocks managed to strike at the same time. So how did these American colonies overcome long odds to create a durable union capable of declaring independence from Britain? In this powerful new history of the fifteen tense months that culminated in the Declaration of Independence, Robert G. Parkinson provides a troubling answer: racial fear. Tracing the circulation of information in the colonial news systems that linked patriot leaders and average colonists, Parkinson reveals how the system's participants constructed a compelling drama featuring virtuous men who suddenly found themselves threatened by ruthless Indians and defiant slaves acting on behalf of the king.

Parkinson argues that patriot leaders used racial prejudices to persuade Americans to declare independence. Between the Revolutionary War's start at Lexington and the Declaration, they broadcast any news they could find about Native Americans, enslaved Blacks, and Hessian mercenaries working with their British enemies. American independence thus owed less to the love of liberty than to the exploitation of colonial fears about race. Thirteen Clocks offers an accessible history of the Revolution that uncovers the uncomfortable origins of the republic even as it speaks to our own moment.

Orreriesーmechanical models of the Solar System and its motionsーare found everywhere. They appear in paintings, on computers, across natural landscapes, and in museums all over the world. The more you look, the more you find, yet their significance is often overlooked aside other great astronomical inventions.

This book reclaims the history of the orrery, offering a fascinating look into its evolution over the centuries.
It is time for us finally to free ourselves from our subjugation to time! From time immemorial, people have preoccupied themselves to an ever-greater but more irrelevant degree with time.
