Before the Uprising Hungary under Communism, 1949?1956【電子書籍】[ Peter Kenez ]

The years of 1949-1956 could be described as the gloomiest in modern Hungarian history, as the country's population lived under vicious totalitarian leadership. Eventually, the regime began to disintegrate, leading to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution - a critical moment in the history of the Cold War. But why did this revolution occur in Hungary, rather than any other countries in the Soviet bloc? Before the Uprising examines the specific social, economic, political, and intellectual characteristics of a totalitarian country. Throughout the volume, Peter Kenez questions what the necessary components of totalitarianism are: whether it is a complete state control of the economy, a personality cult of the leader, or a specific type of propaganda organization. By describing the totalitarianism of the past, this volume show what we can learn for the present, and what to expect from the emerging autocracies of the future.

Translation Under Communism【

This book examines the history of translation under European communism, bringing together studies on the Soviet Union, including Russia and Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Poland. In any totalitarian regime maintaining control over cultural exchange is strategically important, so studying these regimes from the perspective of translation can provide a unique insight into their history and into the nature of their power. This book is intended as a sister volume to Translation Under Fascism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and adopts a similar approach of using translation as a lens through which to examine history. With a strong interdisciplinary focus, it will appeal to students and scholars of translation studies, translation history, censorship, translation and ideology, and public policy, as well as cultural and literary historians of Eastern Europe, Soviet communism, and the Cold War period.

The Politics of a Disillusioned Europe East Central Europe After the Fall of Communism【電子書籍】[ Andr? Liebich ]

Moving from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 to the present day, this book traces the trajectory of the six East Central European former satellites of the Soviet Union (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria) that have joined the European Union. It seeks in particular to explain these countries’ disenchantment with the “return to Europe” in spite of their significant advances. The book proceeds country by country and then devotes chapters to some contemporary issues, such as minorities, migration, and the relations of these “new” members with the European Union as a whole. The book eschews theory and is intended for a general audience, including students at all levels in political science and history classes devoted to the EU and to contemporary Europe, and to an academic and practitioner audience interested in world affairs and the evolution of the European Union. The book strives to fill a persistent knowledge gap in the English-speaking world concerning East Central Europe, and to offer fresh insights about the region in the context of contemporary geopolitics.

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels on Communism and Socialism (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Karl Marx ]

The book has an active table of contents for readers to access each chapter of the following titles directly.

1. THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO ? Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels

2. SOCIALISM: UTOPIAN AND SCIENTIFIC - Friedrich Engels

In the title of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, Marx and Engels presented an analytical approach to the class struggle and the problems of capitalism. THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO also contains their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism. However, the book is lack of detailed potential future forms of communism.

In contrast to abstract of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, SOCIALISM: UTOPIAN AND SCIENTIFIC by co-founder of Marxism Friedrich Engels is the principal source of understanding the analysis of the socialism theory and communism that was declared in The Communist Manifesto. Starting with Saint-Simon, Engels chronicled the thought of utopian socialists in the book of Socialism. He then proceeded to Fourier and Robert Owen. In chapter two, he summarized dialectics, and then chronicles the thought from the ancient Greeks to Hegel. In chapter three he discussed dialectics in relation to economic and social struggles, essentially echoing the words of Marx.

In SOCIALISM: UTOPIAN AND SCIENTIFIC, Engels also explained the differences between utopian socialism and scientific socialism. He further showed that whereas utopian socialism was idealist and declared his personal views that society could be adapted based on scientific socialism. Applying the materialist conception of history that was based on an analysis over history, Engels boldly concluded that communism naturally should follow capitalism that later became a very popular slogan and concept in the many dated socialistic countries.

After Marx and Engels, it was Lenin who took the theories of THE COMMUNIST MANIFEST and SOCIALISM: UTOPIAN AND SCIENTIFIC to the next level for delivery and implementation of a truly socialistic country.

Marx’s thought and Lenin’s path of building Soviets to address issues of Capitalism were catastrophic to the world. An estimated 70 million people died under the soviet regime. The human cost paid for their utopian theories was enormous. Yet despite all this, Marx’s thought is still worshipped by millions by other countries including North Korea and the aged followers in China today.

All of the essential predications by Marx in the book about world moving direction failed. However, history is a mirror for us. Reading the book, THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO and SOCIALISM: UTOPIAN AND SCIENTIFIC, we can have a second thought on evolution of our social systems and avoid paying human cost we made in the past by socialistic countries including Soviets and China.

Marxists highly praised the books of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO and SOCIALISM: UTOPIAN AND SCIENTIFIC as an "in-depth economic and scientific observation on how capitalist economy works, why it was exploitative, and ultimately why it would eventually implode from within". This is a must-read book to understand the foundational thought of a communist party and the nature of a socialistic country.

The Principles of Communism (Illustrated Edition)【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Engels ]

Friedrich Engels (November 28, 1820 August 5, 1895) was a German industrialist, social scientist, author, political theorist, philosopher, and father of Marxist theory, working in close collaboration alongside Karl Marx. In 1845, he published The Condition of the Working Class in England, based on personal observations and research. In 1848, he produced with Marx The Communist Manifesto and later he supported Marx financially to do research and write Das Kapital. After Marx's death Engels edited the second and third volumes. Additionally, Engels organized Marx's notes on the "Theories of Surplus Value" and this was later published as the "fourth volume" of Capital. Engels is commonly known as a "ruthless party tactician", "brutal ideologue", and "master tactician" when it came to purging rivals in political organizations. However, another strand of Engelss personality was one of a "gregarious", "big-hearted", and "jovial man of outsize appetites", who was referred to by his son-in-law as "the great beheader of champagne bottles. Under Stalin's Shadow A Global History of Greek Communism【電子書籍】[ Nikos Marantzidis ]

Under Stalin's Shadow examines the history of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) from 1918 to 1956, showing how closely national Communism was related to international developments. The history of the KKE reveals the role of Moscow in the various Communist parties of Southeastern Europe, as Nikos Marantzidis shows that Communism's international institutions (Moscow Center, Comintern, Balkan Communist Federation, Cominform, and sister parties in the Balkans) were not merely external factors influencing orientation and policy choices.

Based on research from published and unpublished archival documents located in Greece, Russia, Eastern and Western Europe, and the Balkan countries, Under Stalin's Shadow traces the KKE movement's interactions with fraternal parties in neighboring states and with their acknowledged supreme mentors in Stalin's Soviet Russia. Marantzidis reveals how, because the boundaries between the national and international in the Communist world were not clearly drawn, international institutions, geopolitical soviet interests, and sister parties' strategies shaped in fundamental ways the KKE's leadership, its character and decision making as a party, and the way of life of its followers over the years.

The Rebirth of Italian Communism, 1943?44 Dissidents in German-Occupied Rome【電子書籍】[ David Broder ]

During the final years of the Second World War, a decisive change took place in the Italian left, as the Italian Communist Party (PCI) rose from clandestinity and recast itself as a mass, patriotic force committed to building a new democracy. This book explains how this new party came into being. Using Rome as its focus, it explains that the rebirth of the PCI required that it subdue other, dissident strands of communist thinking. During the nine-month German occupation of Rome in 1943-44, dissident communists would create the capital’s largest single resistance formation, the Communist Movement of Italy (MCd’I), which galvanised a social revolt in the capital's borgate slums.

Exploring this wartime battle to define the rebirth of Italian communism, the author examines the ways in which a militant minority of communists rooted their activity in the everyday lives of the population under occupation. In particular, this study focuses on the role of draft resistance and the revolt against labour conscription in driving recruitment to partisan bands, and how communist militants sought to mould these recruits through an active effort of political education. Studying the political writing of these dissidents, their autodidact Marxism and the social conditions in which it emerged, this book also sheds light on an often-ignored underground culture in the years that preceded the armed resistance that began in September 1943.

Revealing an almost unknown history of dissident communism in Italy, outside of more recognisable traditions like Trotskyism or Bordigism, this book provides an innovative perspective on Italian history. It will be of interest to those researching the broad topics of political and social history, but more specifically, resistance in the Second World War and the post-war European left.

An Abandoned Past The End of Post-Communism in Poland【電子書籍】[ Klaus Bachmann ]

The monograph it attempts to identify the definitions of the past, present, and future used by Polish political elites in electoral discourse from 1989 to 2015. It aims not just to identify these definitions, but to compare and contrast them, and show how they evolved over this period. At all times, the dominant definitions were a resource of temporal consciousness for society. For this reason, they can be taken as a basis for scholarly "diagnosis." They can reveal key insights not only into social imaginations of the three dimensions of time, but into social change itself. Therefore, the fundamental aim of this work is to show how society developed its approach to the past, present, and future from 1989 to 2015.

Republicanism, Communism, Islam Cosmopolitan Origins of Revolution in Southeast Asia【電子書籍】[ John T. Sidel ]

In Republicanism, Communism, Islam**, John T. Sidel provides an alternate vantage point for understanding the variegated forms and trajectories of revolution across the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam, a perspective that is de-nationalized, internationalized, and transnationalized.** Sidel positions this new vantage point against the conventional framing of revolutions in modern Southeast Asian history in terms of a nationalist template, on the one hand, and distinctive local cultures and forms of consciousness, on the other.

Sidel's comparative analysis shows howーin very different, decisive, and often surprising waysーthe Philippine, Indonesian, and Vietnamese revolutions were informed, enabled, and impelled by diverse cosmopolitan connections and international conjunctures. Sidel addresses the role of Freemasonry in the making of the Philippine revolution, the importance of Communism and Islam in Indonesia's Revolusi, and the influence that shifting political currents in China and anticolonial movements in Africa had on Vietnamese revolutionaries. Through this assessment, Republicanism, Communism, and Islam tracks how these forces, rather than nationalism per se, shaped the forms of these revolutions, the ways in which they unfolded, and the legacies which they left in their wakes.

Blackshirts and Reds Rational Fascism and the Overthrow of Communism【電子書籍】[ Michael Parenti ]

A bold and entertaining exploration of the epic struggles of yesterday and today.

Blackshirts & Reds explores some of the big issues of our time: fascism, capitalism, communism, revolution, democracy, and ecology. These terms are often bandied about, but seldom explored in the original and exciting way that has become Michael Parenti's trademark.

Parenti shows how "rational fascism" renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege. He also maps out the external and internal forces that destroyed communism, and the disastrous impact of the "free-market" victory on eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He affirms the relevance of taboo ideologies like Marxism, demonstrating the importance of class analysis in understanding political realities and dealing with the ongoing collision between ecology and global corporatism.

Written with lucid and compelling style, this book goes beyond truncated modes of thought, inviting us to entertain iconoclastic views, and to ask why things are as they are.

"A penetrating and persuasive writer with an astonishing array of documentation to implement his attacks." ーThe Catholic Journalist

"By portraying the struggle between fascism and Communism in this century as a single conflict, and not a series of discrete encounters, between the insatiable need for new capital on the one hand and the survival of a system under siege on the other, Parenti defines fascism as the weapon of capitalism, not simply an extreme form of it. Fascism is not an aberration, he points out, but a 'rational' and integral component of the system."ーStan Goff, author of Full Spectrum Disorder: The Military in the New American Century

Michael Parenti, PhD Yale, is an internationally known author and lecturer. He is one of the nation's leading progressive political analysts. Navigating the Zeitgeist A Story of the Cold War, the New Left, Irish Republicanism, and International Communism【電子書籍】[ Until We Fall Helena Sheehan ]

The first biography of Helena Sheehan, Irish-American Marxist feminist activist

Why would an American girl-child, born into a good, Irish-Catholic family in the thick of the McCarthy era ? a girl who, when she came of age, entered a convent ? morph into an atheist, feminist, and Marxist? The answer is in Helena Sheehan’s fascinating account of her journey from her 1940s and 1950s beginnings, into the turbulent 1960s, when the Vietnam War, black power, and women’s liberation rocked her bedrock assumptions and prompted a volley of life-upending questions ? questions shared by millions of young people of her generation. But, for Helena Sheehan, the increasingly radicalized answers deepened through the following decades.

Beginning by overturning such certainties as America-is-the-world’s-greatest-country and the-Church-is-infallible, Sheehan went on to embrace existentialism, philosophical pragmatism, the new left, and eventually Marxism. Migrating from the United States to Ireland, she became involved with Irish republicanism and international communism in the 1970s and 1980s. Sheehan’s narrative vividly captures the global sweep and contradictions of second-wave feminism, antiwar activism, national liberation movements, and international communism in Eastern and Western Europe ? as well as the quieter intellectual ferment of individuals living through these times. Navigating the Zeitgeist is an eloquently articulated voyage from faith to enlightenment to historical materialism that informs as well as entertains. This is the story of a well-lived political and philosophical life, told by a woman who continues to interrogate her times.

Republicanism in Russia Community Before and After Communism【電子書籍】[ Oleg Kharkhordin ]

If Marxism was the apparent loser in the Cold War, it cannot be said that liberalism was the winner, at least not in Russia. Oleg Kharkhordin is not surprised that institutions of liberal democracy failed to take root following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In Republicanism in Russia, he suggests that Russians can find a path to freedom by looking instead to the classical tradition of republican self-government and civic engagement already familiar from their history.

Republicanism has had a steadfast presence in Russia, in spite of tsarist and communist hostility. Originating in the ancient world, especially with Cicero, it continued by way of Machiavelli, Montesquieu, Tocqueville, and more recently Arendt. While it has not always been easy for Russians to read or write classical republican philosophy, much less implement it, republican ideas have long flowered in Russian literature and are part of a common understanding of freedom, dignity, and what constitutes a worthy life. Contemporary Russian republicanism can be seen in movements defending architectural and cultural heritage, municipal participatory budgeting experiments, and shared governance in academic institutions. Drawing on recent empirical research, Kharkhordin elaborates a theory of res publica different from the communal life inherited from the communist period, one that opens up the possibility for a genuine public life in Russia.

By embracing the indigenous Russian reception of the classical republican tradition, Kharkhordin argues, today’s Russians can sever their country’s dependence on the residual mechanisms of the communist past and realize a new vision for freedom.

Communism and Nationalism in Postwar Cyprus, 1945-1955 Politics and Ideologies Under British Rule【電子書籍】[ Alexios Alecou ]

This book analyzes the events that impacted the structure and competitive processes of the two dominant Cypriot political factions while under the watchful eye of British rule. Based on new archival research, Alecou addresses the social and political environment in which the Cypriot Communists and Nationalists fought each other while at the same time had to fight the British Empire. The differences between communists and nationalists brought the two sides to a frontal collision in the wake of the events of the Greek civil war. The class conflict within Cypriot society would at some point inevitably lead, in one way or another, to a clash between the two factions. The civil war in Greece constituted another field of conflict between Left and Right, accelerating the formation of a bipolar party system in which the vertical division of the Greek community in Cyprus eventually expressed itself.

The transition of communist Eastern Europe to capitalist democracy post-1989 and in the aftermath of the Yugoslav wars has focused much scholarly attention - in history, political science and literature - on the fostering of new identities across Eastern European countries in the absence of the old communist social and ideological frameworks. This book examines an important, but hitherto largely neglected, part of this story: the ways in which the West has defined its own identity and ideals via the demonization of communist regimes and Eastern European cultures as a totalitarian, barbarian and Orientalist "other". It describes how old Orientalist prejudices resurfaced during the Cold War period, and argues that the establishment of this discourse helped to justify transitions of Eastern European societies to market capitalism and liberal democracy, suppressing Eastern Europe’s communist histories and legacies, whilst perpetuating its dependence on the West as a source of its own sense of identity. It argues that this process of Orientalization was reinforced by the literary narratives of Eastern European and Russian anti-communist dissidents and exiles, including Vladimir Nabokov, Czeslaw Milosz and Milan Kundera, in their attempts to present themselves as native, Eastern European experts and also emancipate themselves ? and their homelands ? as civilized, enlightened and Westernized. It goes on to suggest that the greatest potential for recognizing and overcoming this self-Orientalization lies in post-communist literary and visual narratives, with their themes of disappointment in the social, economic, or political changes brought on by the transitions, challenge of the unequal discursive power in East-West dialogues where the East is positioned as a disciple or a mimic of the West, and the various guises of nostalgia for communism.

Pocket Guide To Communism And the foundations of critical race theory【電子書籍】[ Dennis Haugh ]

In "The Pocket Guide to Communism," Dennis Haugh delivers a concise yet comprehensive examination of communist ideology and its manifestations throughout history and in the modern world. This accessible guide penetrates the deceptive language and tactics used by communist movements, revealing how Marxist ideologies have evolved from class warfare to more subtle forms of cultural division.

Haugh meticulously deconstructs the philosophical foundations of communism, from its dialectical roots to its modern manifestations in Critical Race Theory and other contemporary movements. Drawing on insights from former communists and historical documents, he exposes the strategies used to undermine Western democratic systems from within.

The book serves as both a historical primer and a warning, detailing how communist tactics have been adapted to the American context, using "Aesopian language" to disguise revolutionary intent. Haugh's analysis extends to China's communist regime and its global ambitions, making a compelling case for vigilance against ideological subversion.

Written with clarity and conviction, this pocket guide equips readers with the knowledge to recognize and resist the divisive tactics that threaten social cohesion and democratic values. For anyone seeking to understand the persistent influence of communist thought in today's political landscape, Haugh provides an essential roadmap through complex ideological terrain.

If you enjoyed "The Black Book of Communism," "The Naked Communist," and "None Dare Call It Conspiracy," you'll love "The Pocket Guide to Communism."

Stalin and German Communism A Study in the Origins of the State Party【電子書籍】[ Ruth Fischer ]

Through her long involvement in the German Communist party, Ruth Fischer amassed valuable material on its changing fortunes, the transformation of the Bolshevik party into a totalitarian dictatorship, and the degeneration of the Comintern. Drawing on this material and on her own vivid recollections, Fischer reconstructs the history of the German Communist party from 1918 to 1929. First published in 1948, this fundamental work opened up the study of the inner organizational life of a major revolutionary movement. In his introduction to the Social Science Classics edition, John Leggett reviews and summarizes the social, political, and economic issues and events that precipitated the revolution and those factors that contributed to its failure.

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on Communism and the Condition of the Working Class in England (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Karl Marx ]

The book has an active table of contents for readers to access each chapter of the following titles directly.

THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO ? Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels

The Condition of the Working Class in England - Friedrich Engels

In the title of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, Marx and Engels presented an analytical approach to the class struggle and the problems of capitalism. THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO also contains their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism. However, the book is lack of detailed potential future forms of communism.

In contrast to a great concept and abstraction of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND by co-founder of Marxism Friedrich Engels is the principal source of studying the industrial working class in Victorian England and origination of the thoughts of communism. In the book THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND, Engels argued that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off and provided the numbers to show that in large industrial cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, mortality due to various disease was four times that in the surrounding countryside. Engels also discussed both the workers' wages and their living conditions and showed that the industrial workers had lower incomes than their pre-industrial peers and that the works lived in more unhealthy and unpleasant environments. Engels' argument proved to be extremely influential with British historians of the industrial revolution and to be a very wide-ranging critique of industrialization. The work is also credited by Marxist historians who studied the industrial revolution in the twentieth century as one of the great works of studying early capitalism in England.

After Marx and Engels, it was Lenin who took the theories of THE COMMUNIST MANIFEST and THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND to the next level for delivery and implementation of a truly socialistic country.

Reading the book, THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO and THE CONDITION OF THE WORKING CLASS IN ENGLAND, we can have a second thought on evolution of our social systems and avoid paying human cost we made in the past by socialistic countries

Masters of Deceit: The Story of Communism in America and How to Fight It【電子書籍】[ J. Edgar Hoover ]

Many Americans have not stopped to realize what a “Soviet America” would mean. The communists, however, have no doubts. Their blueprints are already made. So, at the very outset, let us look at their dream and see what it would mean to you and me and all the people we know. In June, 1957, Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet Communist Party boss, was interviewed before a nation-wide American television audience. With calm assurance he stated: ... I can prophesy that your grandchildren in America will live under socialism. And please do not be afraid of that. Your grandchildren will ... not understand how their grandparents did not understand the progressive nature of a socialist society. William Z. Foster, former National Chairman of the Communist Party of the United States (now Chairman Emeritus of the Party’s National Committee), also predicted that this nation will one day become communist when he stated in 1949, in dedicating his book, The Twilight of World Capitalism: To My Great-Grandson Joseph Manley Kolko Who Will Live in a Communist United States. These words of Russia’s top Party boss and one of the highest-ranking communists in the United States reveal the nature of the enemy we face. To make the United States a communist nation is the ambition of every Party member, regardless of position or rank. He works constantly to make this dream a reality, to steal your rights, liberties, and property. Even though he lives in the United States, he is a supporter of a foreign power, espousing an alien line of thought. He is a conspirator against his country. The communist is thinking in terms of now, in your lifetime. Remember that within four decades communism, as a state power, has spread through roughly 40 per cent of the world’s population and 25 per cent of the earth’s surface. Some years ago communists were complaining that their “fatherland,” Soviet Russia, was encircled, a communist island in a “capitalist” sea. Today the situation is changed. The world communist movement is on the march, into Germany, the Balkans, the Middle East, stretching across the plains of Asia into China, Korea, and Indochina. Communists have never won over an entire country by a free election and have never hesitated to shed blood if this would best serve their purposes. Moreover, in noncommunist countries thousands of Party members are working for Moscow. Communists firmly believe they are destined to conquer the world. This belief is held in the United States too. A disciplined Party of hard-core fanatical members is now at work, with their fellow travelers, sympathizers, opportunists, and dupes. Communists in our country, though small in numbers, do not feel lonely. They have faith in the “big Red brother” who will come to their help. William Z. Foster’s hope, a Red America, is today inspiring thousands of Party members and sympathizers to determined effort. They want to add America to Soviet Russia’s list of conquests.
