Mithilfe des Corpus of Contemporary American English, bekannt als COCA, sollen quantitative und qualitative Unterschiede zwischen W?rtern mit gleicher oder zumindest sehr ?hnlicher denotativer Bedeutung im Sprachgebrauch untersucht werden. Dazu werden in einer synchronischen Studie, die den Zeitraum von 2005 bis 2009 zugrunde legt, elf Gruppen mit jeweils zwei bis drei Synonymen, z.B. maybe/perhaps, analysiert. Zum einen sollen die Synonyme einer Gruppe hinsichtlich ihrer Gesamth?ufigkeit im Corpus miteinander verglichen werden, zum anderen hinsichtlich ihrer quantitativen Verteilung ?ber f?nf sprachliche Register: Gesprochene Sprache, Fiktion, Magazine, Tageszeitungen und akademische Texte. Im Anschluss an die einzelnen Analysen werden Analogien und Unterschiede zwischen den Ergebnissen der Gruppen im Hinblick auf die unten genannten zentralen Thesen der Arbeit interpretiert. Die Studie soll zum einen nachweisen, dass es in einer Gruppe von Synonymen in der Regel ein Lexem gibt, das viel h?ufiger verwendet wird als die anderen Lexeme und demnach als allt?glicher bzw. weniger formell angesehen werden kann. Weiterhin sollen die Ergebnisse Hinweise f?r einen Zusammenhang zwischen der angeblichen (In-)Formalit?t eines Wortes und seiner bevorzugten Verwendung in bestimmten Registern liefern. Dabei gehe ich davon aus, dass informellere Lexeme besonders in informelleren Registern gebraucht werden, formellere Lexeme dagegen in formelleren. The Usage of Idioms in the Language of German EFL-Students. Therefore, the aim of this short corpus study is to investigate the usage of idioms in the language of nonnative English speakers, especially in the language production of German English second language learners ('ESL-Students'). It is argued that ESL-Students in Germany do not use idiomatic language in their production of English, mainly due to the circumstance that idioms are not explicitly taught in the English foreign language classroom (EFL-classroom) and because the language input in German English teaching classes is too artificial to pick them up unintentionally. The first part of this paper will contain a definition of what idioms and idiomatic language are and shortly address the processes of idiom processing, comprehension and acquisition. A second part will contain a corpus study that will shortly examine the usage of idioms by ESL-Students in contrast to the idiom usage of native speakers in quantitative as well as in qualitative terms. The two corpora used will be the ICLE-German ('ICLE-GE') and the LOCNESS corpus. The list of idioms that the corpora are examined for is taken from English second language teaching textbooks currently used in German English classes. A corpus-based study on German personal reference, more specifically the sex-marker '-in', is at its core. Grammatical gender in German is often stated to be independent of the notion of sex (or gender in the sense of Butler 2004, respectively), even if some residual relation is acknowledged at least for personal appellation (cf. Kalverk?mper 1997, Ulrich 1997). The present study investigates the usage of '-in' with inanimate referents (also called 'non-personal agents'). One main question here is, if grammatical gender influences the ways in which we construct such non-personal agents (cf. Jobin 2004). According to Goschler (2005), there is a strong tendency to anthropomorphism in language, thus when we personify things we also 'engender' them by using grammatical gender as an indicator for the gender of the target metaphor. In German, such congruency normally would not be necessary. Women can without problem be referred to by the masculine form. But in some cases with inanimate referents congruency is made: Die Firma Minolta Austria B?rosysteme, Anbieterin von Kopierern, Faxger?ten und Laserprintern [...]' (N91/DEZ.25705). 'The company-FEM Minolta Austria B?rosysteme, provider-FEM of copying and fax machines and laser printers [...]' In the book, a combined method from computer and corpus linguistics was implemented in order to create useful data. The major research tool was COSMAS II, a corpus application, with which the German reference corpus (3,6 Billion words) can be accessed. Research resulted in a comprehensive database from which the study of grammatical gender in German could benefit.
