Culloden The History and Archaeology of the Last Clan Battle【電子書籍】[ Tony Pollard ]

A team of historians and archaeologists re-examine what happened at the Battle of Culloden between the Scottish Jacobites and Great Britain.

In battle at Culloden Moor on April 16, 1746, the Jacobite cause was dealt a mortal blow. The power of the Highland clans was broken. And the image of sword-wielding Highlanders charging into a hail of lead delivered by the red-coated battalions of the Hanoverian army has passed into legend. The battle was a turning point in British history. And yet our perception of this critical episode tends to be confused by mistaken, sometimes partisan, views of the events on the battlefield. So, what really happened at Culloden?

In this fascinating and original book, a team of leading historians and archaeologists reconsiders every aspect of the battle. They examine the latest historical and archaeological evidence, question every assumption, and rewrite the story of the campaign in vivid detail. This is the first time that such a distinguished team of experts has focused on a single British battle. The result is a seminal study of the subject, and it is a landmark publication of battlefield archaeology.

Praise for Culloden

“Culloden is one of the best documented British battles and also one of the most mapped, yet the contributions to this fine volume have succeeded in finding new material.” ーScotts Magazine (UK)

Culloden Great Battles【電子書籍】[ Murray Pittock ]

The battle of Culloden lasted less than an hour. The forces involved on both sides were small, even by the standards of the day. And it is arguable that the ultimate fate of the 1745 Jacobite uprising had in fact been sealed ever since the Jacobite retreat from Derby several months before. But for all this, Culloden is a battle with great significance in British history. It was the last pitched battle on the soil of the British Isles to be fought with regular troops on both sides. It came to stand for the final defeat of the Jacobite cause. And it was the last domestic contestation of the Act of Union of 1707, the resolution of which propelled Great Britain to be the dominant world power for the next 150 years. If the battle itself was short, its aftermath was brutal - with the depredations of the Duke of Cumberland followed by a campaign to suppress the clan system and the Highland way of life. And its afterlife in the centuries since has been a fascinating one, pitting British Whig triumphalism against a growing romantic memorialization of the Jacobite cause. On both sides there has long been a tendency to regard the battle as a dramatic clash, between Highlander and Lowlander, Celt and Saxon, Catholic and Protestant, the old and the new. Yet, as this account of the battle and its long cultural afterlife suggests, while viewing Culloden in such a way might be rhetorically compelling, it is not necessarily good history.

Battles of the Jacobite Rebellions Killiecrankie to Culloden【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Oates ]

“Oates examines in minute detail why the Jacobite forces posed such a threat to William and Mary, Queen Anne, and George I and II.” ーBooks Monthly

Many books have been written about the Jacobite rebellionsーthe armed attempts made by the Stuarts to regain the British throne between 1689 and 1746ーand in particular about the risings of 1689, 1715, 1719 and 1745. The key battles have been described in graphic detail. Yet no previous book has given a comprehensive military account of the campaigns in their entiretyーand that is the purpose of Jonathan Oates’s new history.

For over fifty years the Jacobites posed a serious threat to the governments of William and Mary, Queen Anne and George I and II. But they were unable to follow up their victories at Killiecrankie, Prestonpans and Falkirk, and the overwhelming defeat suffered by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army when it confronted the Duke of Cumberland’s forces at Culloden in 1746 was decisive.

The author uses vivid eyewitness testimony and contemporary sources, as well as the latest archaeological evidence, to trace the course of the conflict, and offers an absorbing insight into the makeup of the opposing sides, their leadership, their troops and the strategy and tactics they employed. His distinctive approach gives the reader a long perspective on a conflict which is often viewed more narrowly in terms of famous episodes and the careers of the leading men.

“A novel and rewarding approach in providing a comprehensive account of the Jacobite rebellions. This is a story of a family torn apart by religion and entitlement. Highly Recommended.”

Culloden Scotland's Last Battle and the Forging of the British Empire【電子書籍】[ Trevor Royle ]

The Battle of Culloden has gone down in history as the last major battle fought on British soil: a vicious confrontation between Scottish forces supporting the Stuart claim to the throne and the English Royal Army. But this wasn't just a conflict between the Scots and the English, the battle was also part of a much larger campaign to protect the British Isles from the growing threat of a French invasion.

In Trevor Royle's vivid and evocative narrative, we are drawn into the ranks, on both sides, alongside doomed Jacobites fighting fellow Scots dressed in the red coats of the Duke of Cumberland's Royal Army. And we meet the Duke himself, a skilled warrior who would gain notoriety due to the reprisals on Highland clans in the battle's aftermath. Royle also takes us beyond the battle as the men of the Royal Army, galvanized by its success at Culloden, expand dramatically and start to fight campaigns overseas in America and India in order to secure British interests; we see the revolutionary use of fighting techniques first implemented at Culloden; and the creation of professional fighting forces.

Culloden changed the course of British history by ending all hope of the Stuarts reclaiming the throne, cementing Hanoverian rule and forming the bedrock for the creation of the British Empire. Royle's lively and provocative history looks afresh at the period and unveils its true significance, not only as the end of a struggle for the throne but the beginning of a new global power.

A journey to the Highland battlefield where this landmark event in Scottish history took place, with numerous maps and illustrations.

Culloden Moor is one of the most famous battles in British history and, for the Scots, the battle is pre-eminent, surpassing even Bannockburn. In this decisive and bloody encounter in 1746, the Duke of Cumberland’s government army defeated the Jacobite rebels led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart. Yet, despite the attention paid to this critical eventーin particular to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite legendーfew writers have concentrated on the battle itself and on the Highland battlefield on which it was fought.

Stuart Reid, in this revised third edition of his bestselling guide, does just that. He tells the story of the campaign and sets out in a graphic and easily understood way the movements and deployments of the opposing forces, and he describes in vivid detail the deadly combat that followed. Incorporating the latest documentary and archaeological research and featuring a completely new and expanded section on the armies, it also invites visitors to explore for themselves this historic ground on which the tragic battle was fought.

Bonnie Prince Charlie: A Tale of Fontenoy and Culloden【電子書籍】[ George Alfred Henty ]

It was a dull evening in the month of September, 1728. The apprentices had closed and barred the shutters and the day's work was over. Supper was laid in the long room over the shop, the viands were on the table, and round it were standing Bailie Anderson and his wife, his foreman John Gillespie, and his two apprentices. The latter were furtively eying the eatables, and wondering how much longer the grace which their master was delivering would be. Suddenly there was a knock at the door below. No one stirred until the bailie had finished his grace, before which time the knock had been twice repeated. "Elspeth, woman," the bailie said when he had brought the grace to an end, "go down below and see who knocks so impatiently; look through the grille before you open the door; these are nor times when one opens to the first stranger who knocks." The old servant, who had been standing behind her mistress, went downstairs. The door was opened, and they heard an exclamation of surprise at the answer to her question, "Who is it that's knocking as if the house belonged to him?" Those gathered up stairs heard the bolts withdrawn. There was a confused sound of talking and then a heavy step was heard ascending the stairs, and without introduction a tall man, wrapped in a cloak and carrying a child of some two years old, strode into the room. He threw his hat on to a settle and advanced straight towards the bailie, who looked in surprise at this unceremonious entry.

Culloden to Sydney Town【電子書籍】[ T J Lovat ]

Culloden to Sydney Town is a work of historical fiction. It covers the century from the Lovat family's move from the Scottish Highlands to its arrival in New South Wales. The story begins with the defeat of the Jacobite army at Culloden on the 16th of April 1746, a day of devastating loss for the Highlander cause for freedom from English rule. It is also a day of death and rebirth for this Scottish family. The story ends with the arrival in Sydney Town of two brothers, great grandsons of a fallen Jacobite hero, in 1837.

Members of the family move to England, Ireland and Persia, where their Highland culture is challenged by prejudice and religious difference. One child joins the British Army and serves in the Americas in the period leading to the War of Independence, struggling between loyalty to the British cause and sympathy for the American quest for freedom. Another family member joins the Royal Navy and travels on the Third Fleet to New South Wales in 1791, challenged by the spectre of an alien force invading other people's lands and the plight of the convicts. It is his own sons who make their way to New South Wales half a century later to establish themselves as pioneers in the colony, one as a teacher, the other as a clergyman.

The story covers issues of love, loyalty and betrayal, as well as cultural and religious difference. The key characters are inserted into historical events and the lives of real people, including Scottish nobles, American founding fathers and early governors of New South Wales. The novel captures a slice of history marked by exploration, the discovery of new lands and the clash between old and new cultures.

'Excellent... It is a tremendous tale - one of the most dramatic in our island's history - and O'Keeffe tells it beautifully' The Times

Charles Edward Stuart's campaign to seize the British throne ended with one of the quickest defeats in history: on 16 April 1746, at Culloden, his Jacobite army was overpowered in under forty minutes. Its brutal repercussions, however, endured for years, its legacy for centuries.

Paul O'Keeffe follows the Jacobite army from initial victories to calamitous defeat. Exploring the battle's aftermath, he chronicles the Jacobite prisoners paying for their treason on block and gibbet while those granted 'the King's mercy' suffered the fate of forced labour on plantations in the colonies. While Stuart's cause eventually acquired an aura of romanticism, the Jacobite Rising remains one of the most bloody and divisive conflicts in British domestic history, which resonates to this day.

**'Detailed, vivid - and not for the faint-hearted' Financial Times

'Fascinating, meticulously researched... tremendous' Daily Mail

'Intensely readable... and vividly written' Neal Ascherson, London Review of Books**
