The Decameron (Day 6 to Day 10) Containing an hundred pleasant Novels【電子書籍】[ Giovanni Boccaccio ]

In the final five days of Giovanni Boccaccio's masterwork, The Decameron, the narrative reaches a crescendo of wit, poignancy, and social commentary. Set against the backdrop of the Black Death, Boccaccio presents a series of interconnected tales told by a group of ten young people seeking refuge from the plague in a secluded villa. The stories from Days 6 to 10 reflect an intriguing blend of humor and tragedy, exploring themes of love, deception, and moral complexity, all delivered with Boccaccio's characteristic blend of realism and fantasy. This late medieval work not only encapsulates the human experience amidst crisis but also serves as a cornerstone of Italian literature, foreshadowing the Renaissance's exploration of individualism and human emotion. Boccaccio, a contemporary of Petrarch and a pivotal figure in the development of early humanism, was deeply influenced by the cultural shifts of his time. His experiences in Florence during the tumultuous period of the Black Death provide a personal lens through which he interrogates the nature of human relationships. Boccaccio'??s literary legacy is marked by his vernacular style, which democratized literature and expanded the boundaries of storytelling. The Decameron remains an essential read for those interested in the evolution of narrative form and the human condition. By engaging with Boccaccio's insights, modern readers are invited to reflect on their own perceptions of love, morality, and the societal constructs that shape human experiences. This collection not only entertains but also serves as a timeless commentary on the resilience of the human spirit.

According to Wikipedia: "The Decameron ... is a collection of 100 novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio, probably begun in 1350 and finished in 1353. It is a medieval allegorical work best known for its bawdy tales of love, appearing in all its possibilities from the erotic to the tragic. Many notable writers such as Chaucer are said to have drawn inspiration from The Decameron... structured in a frame narrative, or frame tale. Boccaccio begins with a description of the Black Death and leads a group of seven women and three men who flee from plague-ridden Florence to a villa in the (then) countryside of Fiesole for two weeks. To pass the time, each member of the party tells one story for each one of the nights spent at the villa. Although fourteen days pass, two days each week are set aside: one day for chores and one holy day during which no work is done. In this manner, 100 stories are told by the end of the ten days."

The Decameron【電子書籍】[ Giovanni Boccaccio ]

*** Original and Unabridged Content. Made available by CLASSIC COLLECTION 600.***

Synopsis:

Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron is a collection of novellas or short novels written during the 14th century. There are 100 tales contained in the book which is presented together. The book’s title The Decameron combines the two Greek words “deka” meaning ten and “hemera” meaning day. The title can be literally translated as “ten day,” which is also the time frame in which the stories are told by the 7 young women and 3 young men.

In the book, each of the ten persons took their turns to tell stories for a day. They did this during their stay at a villa in Fiesole in which they stayed to be safe from the Black Plague. The stories they told vary from love stories, narratives which have tragic endings to erotic tales. This book was originally written in vernacular Florentine and was subsequently translated into many different languages including English. Wayne Reborn’s recent translation of the book into English in 2013 was praised by many critics for being “modern” and it made the book more “readable” to younger audiences.

Like most of the literature from the medieval times, this book is full of symbolisms. The book’s subtitle “Prince Galehaut” is an allusion to Galehaut, a character in the tale of King Arthur who made a way for his friend Lancelot and Guinevere to meet and express their love for each other. It was believed that Boccaccio used this subtitle to express his sentiment about women during his time who have no social liberty and can’t freely express themselves. The seven young women in the book are believed to symbolize the four cardinal virtues and the three theological virtues while the three young men represent the classical belief of the Greeks in which the human soul has three parts: reason, spirit and appetite.

In the passage of time, other authors eventually borrowed the storylines of the tales told in the book. Modern readers may be amused to learn that the plots of some of the stories they know today were just borrowed from this The Decameron.

FIND AND ENJOY!

The Psychical Researcher's Tale - the Sceptical Poltergeist From "The New Decameron"【電子書籍】[ John Davys Beresford ]

The life and writings of Pope have been discussed in a literature more voluminous than that which exists in the case of almost any Other English man of letters. No biographer, however, has produced a definitive or exhaustive work. It seems therefore desirable to indicate the main authorities upon which such a biographer would have to rely, and which have been consulted for the purpose of the following necessarily brief and imperfect sketch. The first life of Pope was a catchpenny book, by William Ayre, published in 1745, and remarkable chiefly as giving the first version of some demonstrably erroneous statements, unfortunately adopted by later writers. In 1751, Warburton, as Pope's literary executor, published the authoritative edition of the poet's works, with notes containing some biographical matter. In 1769 appeared a life by Owen Ruffhead, who wrote under Warburton's inspiration. This is a dull and meagre performance, and much of it is devoted to an attackーpartly written by Warburton himselfーupon the criticisms advanced in the first volume of Joseph Warton's Essay on Pope. Warton's first volume was published in 1756; and it seems that the dread of Warburton's wrath counted for something in the delay of the second volume, which did not appear till 1782. The Essay contains a good many anecdotes of interest. Warton's edition of Popeーthe notes in which are chiefly drawn from the Essayーwas published in 1797. The Life by Johnson appeared in 1781; it is admirable in many ways; but Johnson had taken the least possible trouble in ascertaining facts. Both Warton and Johnson had before them the manuscript collections of Joseph Spence, who had known Pope personally during the last twenty years of his life, and wanted nothing but literary ability to have become an efficient Boswell. Spence's anecdotes, which were not published till 1820, give the best obtainable information upon many points, especially in regard to Pope's childhood. This ends the list of biographers who were in any sense contemporary with Pope.

Through these narratives, Boccaccio paints a vibrant portrait of humanity, oscillating between tragedy and comedy, morality and satire.

An ageless masterpiece, this text, though several centuries old, remains surprisingly relevant in its exploration of human behavior, emotions, and social interactions, still resonating powerfully with today's readers.

This unabridged and annotated edition features the translation by John Payne, widely recognized as one of the most faithful to the original Italian text. Through his meticulous and respectful work, English-speaking readers can discover the full subtlety and linguistic richness of Boccaccio's text as it was written in the 14th century.

Dive into this entertaining universe where each story is an invitation to reflect, smile, and marvel at the infinite nuances of the human condition.

Extract: "A kindly thing it is to have compassion of the afflicted and albeit it well beseemeth every one, yet of those is it more particularly required who have erst had need of comfort and have found it in any, amongst whom, if ever any had need thereof or held it dear or took pleasure therein aforetimes, certes, I am one of these."

The Decameron (Volume I)【電子書籍】[ Giovanni Boccaccio ]

Son of a merchant, Boccaccio di Chellino di Buonaiuto, of Certaldo in Val d'Elsa, a little town about midway between Empoli and Siena, but within the Florentine "contado," Gio-vanni Boccaccio was born, most probably at Paris, in the year 1313. His mother, at any rate, was a Frenchwoman, whom his father seduced during a sojourn at Paris, and afterwards deserted. So much as this Boccaccio has himself told us, under a transparent veil of allegory, in his Ameto. Of his mother we would fain know more, for his wit has in it a quality, especially noticeable in the Tenth Novel of the Sixth Day of the Decameron, which marks him out as the forerunner of Rabelais, and prompts us to ask how much more his genius may have owed to his French ancestry. His father was of sufficient standing in Florence to be chosen Prior in 1321; but this brief term of officeーbut two monthsーwas his last, as well as his first experience of public life. Of Boccaccio's early years we know nothing more than that his first preceptor was the Florentine grammarian, Giovanni da Strada, father of the poet Zanobi da Strada, and that, when he was about ten years old, he was bound apprentice to a merchant, with whom he spent the next six years at Paris, whence he returned to Florence with an inveterate repugnance to commerce.

ーDETAILED CONTENTSー
INTRODUCTION
PROEM
- FIRST DAY -
NOVEL I. - Ser Ciappelletto cheats a holy friar by a false confession, and dies; and, having lived as a very bad man, is, on his death, reputed a saint, and called San Ciappelletto.
NOVEL II. - Abraham, a Jew, at the instance of Jehannot de Chevigny, goes to the court of Rome, and having marked the evil life of clergy, returns to Paris, and becomes a Chris-tian.
NOVEL III. - Melchisedech, a Jew, by a story of three rings averts a danger with which he was menaced by Saladin.
NOVEL IV. - A monk lapses into a sin meriting the most severe punishment, justly censures the same fault in his abbot, and thus evades the penalty.
NOVEL V. - The Marchioness of Monferrato by a banquet of hens seasoned with wit checks the mad passion of the King of France.
NOVEL VI. - A worthy man by an apt saying puts to shame the wicked hypocrisy of the religious.
NOVEL VII. - Bergamino, with a story of Primasso and the Abbot of Cluny, finely censures a sudden access of avarice in Messer Cane della Scala.
NOVEL VIII. - Guglielmo Borsiere by a neat retort sharply censures avarice in Messer Ermino de' Grimaldi.
NOVEL IX. - The censure of a Gascon lady converts the King of Cyprus from a churlish to an honourable temper.
NOVEL X. - Master Alberto da Bologna honourably puts to shame a lady who sought occasion to put him to shame in that he was in love with her.

- SECOND DAY -
NOVEL I. - Martellino pretends to be a paralytic, and makes it appear as if he were cured by being placed upon the body of St. Arrigo. His trick is detected; he is beaten and arrested, and is in peril of hanging, but finally escapes.
NOVEL II. - Rinaldo d'Asti is robbed, arrives at Castel Guglielmo, and is entertained by a widow lady; his property is restored to him, and he returns home safe and sound.
NOVEL III. - Three young men squander their substance and are reduced to poverty. Their nephew, returning home a desperate man, falls in with an abbot, in whom he discovers the daughter of the King of England. She marries him, and he retrieves the losses and re-establishes the fortune of his uncles.
NOVEL IV. - Landolfo Ruffolo is reduced to poverty, turns corsair, is captured by Genoese, is shipwrecked, escapes on a chest full of jewels, and, being cast ashore at Corfu, is hospitably entertained by a woman, and returns home wealthy.
NOVEL V. - Andreuccio da Perugia comes to Naples to buy horses, meets with three serious adventures in one night, comes safe out of them all, and returns home with a ruby.

The Decameron is a collection of 100 novels written by Giovanni Boccaccio in the 14th century and is considered one of the most important works of the 14th century European literature. For its salient features, Boccaccio's work must certainly be counted among the works that inspired the ideal of hedonistic life typical of humanist and Renaissance culture, which hoped for a life dedicated to the pleasure and worship of serene living. The book tells of a group of young men, seven women and three men, who stay out of Florence for ten days to escape the black plague that was bursting in the city at that time, and that in turn, they talk of often humorous stories and with frequent references to the bucolic erotism of time.

The Decameron is written as framed narrative which is a literary compositional technique that allows various different stories to be related within a previously introduced main story. The Decameron tells a story of ten young Florentines who have fled from the Black Plague to reside in Naples. The one hundred allegorical stories are shared through the narrative voices of these young people as they spend their nights regaling the company with tales from the erotic, sensual, and bawdy to the intellectual, philosophical or tragic. The narrative's fundamental theme is of struggle between life and death in the face of the Black Plague and the various ways life continues in spite of traditional moral attitudes and beliefs.
