Debating the American Conservative Movement 1945 to the Present【電子書籍】[ Donald T. Critchlow ]
|

Debating the American Conservative Movement chronicles one of the most dramatic stories of modern American political history. The authors describe how a small band of conservatives in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War launched a revolution that shifted American politics to the right, challenged the New Deal order, transformed the Republican party into a voice of conservatism, and set the terms of debate in American politics as the country entered the new millennium. Historians Donald T. Critchlow and Nancy MacLean frame two opposing perspectives of how the history of conservatism in modern America can be understood, but readers are encouraged to reach their own conclusions through reading engaging primary documents.

Debating Malthus A Documentary Reader on Population, Resources, and the Environment【電子書籍】[ Paul S. Sutter ]
|

For centuries, thinking about the earth's increasing human population has been tied to environmental ideas and political action. This highly teachable collection of contextualized primary sources allows students to follow European and North American discussions about intertwined and evolving concepts of population, resources, and the natural environment from early contexts in the sixteenth century through to the present day.

Edited and introduced by Robert J. Mayhew, a noted biographer of Thomas Robert Malthusーwhose Essay on the Principle of Population (1798), excerpted here, is an influential and controversial take on the topicーthis volume explores themes including evolution, eugenics, war, social justice, birth control, environmental Armageddon, and climate change. Other responses to the idea of new "population bombs" are represented here by radical feminist work, by Indigenous views of the population-environment nexus, and by intersectional race-gender approaches. By learning the patterns of this discourse, students will be better able to critically evaluate historical conversations and contemporary debates.

Just Deserts Debating Free Will【電子書籍】[ Daniel C. Dennett ]
|

The concept of free will is profoundly important to our self-understanding, our interpersonal relationships, and our moral and legal practices. If it turns out that no one is ever free and morally responsible, what would that mean for society, morality, meaning, and the law?

Just Deserts brings together two philosophers ? Daniel C. Dennett and Gregg D. Caruso ? to debate their respective views on free will, moral responsibility, and legal punishment. In three extended conversations, Dennett and Caruso present their arguments for and against the existence of free will and debate their implications. Dennett argues that the kind of free will required for moral responsibility is compatible with determinism ? for him, self-control is key; we are not responsible for becoming responsible, but are responsible for staying responsible, for keeping would-be puppeteers at bay. Caruso takes the opposite view, arguing that who we are and what we do is ultimately the result of factors beyond our control, and because of this we are never morally responsible for our actions in the sense that would make us truly deserving of blame and praise, punishment and reward.

Just Deserts introduces the concepts central to the debate about free will and moral responsibility by way of an entertaining, rigorous, and sometimes heated philosophical dialogue between two leading thinkers.

John Rawls Debating the Major Questions【
|

John Rawls is widely considered one of the most important political philosophers of the 20th century, and his highly original and influential works play a central role in contemporary philosophical debates. This collection of original essays explores the outpouring of scholarship and debate inspired by Rawls's political philosophy. Given the vastness of this scholarship, this volume aims to provide inroads to its central themes and preoccupations. The volume is divided into ten parts, exploring ten distinct questions, for example: Can Rawls's conception of public reason offer determinate answers to major questions of justice? Is ideal theory useful or relevant to resolving issues of justice in the nonideal world? Are libertarians correct to criticize Rawls's work for failing to prioritize economic liberty? When institutions aim at equality, what is it that they should seek to equalize--primary goods, capabilities, or welfare? For each question, there is an introductory essay, providing an overview of the relevant arguments from Rawls's work and the historical contours of the debate that ensued. Each introductory essay is followed by two essays written by scholars who take opposing positions, which move the discussion forward in a fruitful way. This volume provides readers with clear and in-depth explication of Rawls's arguments, the most important critical dialogue generated in response to those arguments, and the dialogue's significance to contemporary politics.

Debating New Approaches to History【
|

With its innovative format, Debating New Approaches to History addresses issues currently at the top of the discipline's theoretical and methodological agenda. In its chapters, leading historians of both older and younger generations from across the Western world and beyond discuss and debate the main problems and challenges that historians are facing today. Each chapter is followed by a critical commentary from another key scholar in the field and the author's response.

The volume looks at topics such as the importance and consequences of the 'digital turn' in history (what will history writing be like in a digital age?), the challenge of posthumanist theory for history writing (how do we write the history of non-humans?) and the possibilities of moving beyond traditional sources in history and establishing a dialogue with genetics and neurosciences (what are the perspectives and limits of the so-called 'neurohistory'?). It also revisits older debates in history which remain crucial, such as what the gender approach can offer to historical research or how to write history on a global scale.

Debating New Approaches to History does not just provide a useful overview of the new approaches to history it covers, but also offers insights into current historical debates and the process of historical method in the making. It demonstrates how the discipline of history has responded to challenges in society ? such as digitalization, globalization and environmental concerns ? as well as in humanities and social sciences, such as the 'material turn', 'visual turn' or 'affective turn'. This is a key volume for all students of historiography wanting to keep their finger on the pulse of contemporary thinking in historical research.

Debating Foreign Policy in Eighteenth-Century Britain【電子書籍】[ Jeremy Black ]
|

It was during the course of the eighteenth century that Britain's status as a major maritime and commercial power was forged, shaping the political, economic and military policies of the nation for the next two centuries. Starting from a relatively minor role in global affairs before 1700, Britain rapidly rose to become a significant player in European affairs, and leading imperial power by 1800. In this commanding contribution to the subject, Jeremy Black draws on his extensive expertise to examine how British political culture and public debate in this period responded to, and in part shaped, this transition to an increasingly prominent role in world affairs. Rather than offering a familiar narrative of Britain's eighteenth-century foreign policy, this book instead focuses upon how this policy was debated and written about in British society. Taking as a central theme the debate over policy and the development of public culture and politics, the study explores how these were linked to developing relations with Europe and helped shape colonial strategies and expectations. It highlights how widely shared concerns about such issues as national defence, the strength of the Royal Navy and trade protection, presented little consensus in how they were to be realised and were the subject of fierce public debate. The book underlines how these kinds of issues were not considered in the abstract, but in terms of a political community that was divided over a series of key issues. By probing the problems and issues surrounding the need to define and discuss Britain's foreign policy in semi-public and public contexts, this book offers a fascinating insight into questions of perceived national interest, and how this developed and evolved over the course of the eighteenth century. This work complements the author's other studies by joining the institutional focus seen there to a wider assessment of public politics and print culture, and as such will make a central contribution to studies of eighteenth-century Britain and Europe.

Debating the A Priori【電子書籍】[ Paul Boghossian ]
|

What kind of knowledge could be obtainable just by thinking? Debating the A Priori presents a series of exchanges between two leading philosophers on how to answer this question. In this extended debate, Boghossian and Williamson contribute alternating chapters which develop radically contrasting views and present detailed replies to each other's arguments. A central case is the nature of basic logical knowledge and the justification for basic deductive inferences, but the arguments range widely across epistemology, the philosophy of language, and metaphilosophy. The debate takes in the status of the distinctions between analytic and synthetic and between a priori and a posteriori, as well as problems concerning the conditions for linguistic understanding and competence, and the question of what it might be to grasp a concept or to have an intuition. Both authors explore implications for how philosophy itself works, or should work. The result vividly exposes some of the main fault lines in contemporary philosophy, concerning the relation between reason and experience, the status of basic beliefs, the nature of concepts and intuitions, the role of language in our understanding of the world, how to study knowledge, and what it is to do philosophy. Both authors provide conclusions which sum up their positions and place the arguments in context. Their lively and engaging exchanges allow the reader to follow up-close how a philosophical debatte evolves.

Debating Cancer: The Paradox In Cancer Research【電子書籍】[ Henry H Q Heng ]
|

Cancer research is at a crossroads. Traditionally, cancer has been thought of as a disease of gene mutation, where the stepwise accumulation of cancer gene mutations is the key, and the identification of common gene mutations has been considered to be essential for diagnosis and treatment. Despite extensive research efforts and accumulated knowledge on cancer genes and pathways, the clinical benefits of this traditional approach have been limited. Recently, cancer genome sequencing has revealed an extensive amount of genetic heterogeneity where the long-expected common mutation drivers have been difficult, if not impossible, to identify. These realities ultimately challenge the conceptual framework of current cancer biology. This book introduces a new concept of genome theory of cancer evolution, in an attempt to unify the field. Many important and representative, but often confusing, questions and paradoxes are critically analyzed. By comparing gene- and genome-based theories, the hidden flaws of many popular viewpoints are addressed. This discussion is intended to initiate a much-needed critical re-evaluation of current cancer research.

Speaking Out on Human Rights Debating Canada's Human Rights System【電子書籍】[ Pearl Eliadis ]
|

Canadians like to see themselves as champions of human rights in the international community. Closer to home, however, the human rights system in Canada - particularly its public institutions such as commissions and tribunals - has been the object of sustained debate and vehement criticism, based largely on widespread myths about how it works. In Speaking Out on Human Rights, Pearl Eliadis explodes these myths, analysing the pervasive distortions and errors on which they depend. Canada's human rights system, a unique legal tradition operating within a powerful modern constitution, is a fundamental mechanism for ensuring the practical application of our national commitment to tolerance and inclusion. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Canada's leading human rights experts and extensive original research, Eliadis explores the evolution of commissions and tribunals as vehicles of public policy and considers their mandate to mediate rights conflicts in such contested areas as hate speech, religious freedoms, and sexuality. She provides a frank assessment of how Canada's human rights system functions and argues that misplaced critiques have prevented urgent and necessary discussions about the reforms that are needed to improve fairness and equality before the law and to ensure institutional independence, impartiality, and competence. Speaking Out on Human Rights shows how our human rights system plays a unique and important role in the rights revolution both in Canada and internationally and offers promising avenues for its future development.

Multiculturalism Question Debating Identity in 21st Century Canada【電子書籍】[ Jack Jedwab ]
|

Canada's policy of multiculturalism has been the object of ongoing debate since it was first introduced in 1971. Decades later, Canadians still seem uncertain about the meaning of multiculturalism. Detractors insist that government has not succeeded in discouraging immigrants and their descendants from preserving their cultures of origin, undercutting a necessary identification with Canada, while supporters argue that immigrant groups' abilities to influence their adjustments to Canada has strengthened their sense of belonging. Beyond what often seems to be a polarized debate is a broad spectrum of opinion around multiculturalism in Canada and what it means to be Canadian. The Multiculturalism Question analyzes the policy, ideology, and message of multiculturalism. Several of Canada's leading thinkers provide valuable insights into a crucial debate that will inevitably continue well into the future.

Has Science Displaced the Soul? Debating Love and Happiness【電子書籍】[ Kevin Sharpe ]
|

Can science explain powerful human emotions such as love and happiness? Or, are these emotions something more than the action of biochemicals and electrical impulses? Science is constantly uncovering the mysteries of our nature, but we are uneasy about submitting our most intimate feelings to its scrutiny. Religion tells us that God is love but neuroscience counters with love as a well-timed trickle of transmitters and hormones. In the 21st century, is it necessary to discard our traditional beliefs of a loving God in favor of dopamine? With doctorates in both mathematics and theology, Kevin Sharpe explores these notions and asks the question, Has Science Displaced the Soul?

Unflinching in facing these issues, Sharpe provides a clear and current summary of the discoveries of science and what our spiritual traditions still have to offer in the ongoing effort to understand our deepest urges. He confronts serious unanswered questions. How can the Divine direct a random process like evolution? How can we reconcile the big bang with creation out of nothing? Does it make sense to claim that the non-biological Divine shares in human purposes and desires? Sharpe's solution is controversial since it requires that we demolish and reconstruct some of our most trusted conceptions. By examining the ways in which scientific and religious claims can be harmonized, he offers a radical and powerful interpretation of love and happiness in the divine context.

Debating Hate Crime Language, Legislatures, and the Law in Canada【電子書籍】[ Allyson M. Lunny ]

Debating Hate Crime examines the language and argumentation used by parliamentarians, senators, and committee witnesses to debate Canada’s “hate-crime” laws. These lively, and at times raucous, legislative debates and committee hearings reveal much about party politics, public policy, and social issues of the day, including citizenship, nationhood, and Canadian values. Drawing on discourse analysis, semiotics, and critical psychoanalysis, Allyson Lunny explores how the tropes, metaphors, and other linguistic signifiers used in these debates expose the particular concerns, trepidations, and anxieties of Canadian lawmakers and the expert witnesses called before their committees. In so doing, Lunny reveals and interrogates the meaning and social signification of the endorsement of, and resistance to, hate law. The result is a rich historical and analytical account of some of Canada’s most passionate public debates on victimization, rightful citizenship, social threat, and moral erosion.

I Am The Other Debating the Role of Islam in a Divided America【電子書籍】[ Imam Azhar Subedar ]
|

In today's divided America, hatred, fear, and suspicion often prevail. If you are a Muslim, do you ever wonder why you are feared? Conversely, if you are a non-Muslim, do you have the information necessary to form an informed opinion about Muslims?
This book stands alone because it simultaneously speaks to Muslims and Islamic skeptics. It features a thought-provoking dialogue between an Islamic scholar and a non-Muslim former federal prosecutor. The dialogue explores whether a practicing Muslim can be accepted in a Judeo-Christian West that is often Islamophobic and hostile. The conversation unfolds between two distinct individualsーone a devout Muslim and the other a secular Jewーboth of whom prioritize the preservation of democracy. Their exchange is enlightening and respectful, addressing divisive issues without resorting to demonization.
Amidst ongoing conflicts between Muslims and Jews and a global resurgence of authoritarianism, the authors engage in critical discussions about war, political ideology, and the potential for coexistence. Drawing from their vastly different life experiences, they aim to inform and empower readers to form opinions based on facts rather than emotions.
This book is for non-Muslims seeking to understand Islam and have their questions about the faith answered. It is also for Muslims who wish to comprehend the root causes of the fear and distrust they often encounter in the West almost daily.

About the Author

Imam Azhar Subedar:

Imam Azhar Subedar is an Islamic leader and scholar born and raised in Canada. He completed a transformative decade of Islamic studies in the United Kingdom, earning a Master’s in Islamic Sciences and Arabic Literature. Imam Subedar addresses contemporary social issues through the lens of the Quran. Since 2002, he has been a driving force within U.S. Muslim communities, serving as an advocate, strategist for Islamic organizations, and a respected spiritual leader.

His commitment to empowering individuals and fostering community growth was shaped by September 11, 2001. On that day, while traveling by bus from Pakistan to New Delhi, India, he learned how the world had changed shortly after arriving. The troubling signs he experienced on his journey foreshadowed the challenges that would follow from that moment on; his life as a Muslim and as an Imam was forever altered. He made it his mission to combat the Islamophobia that arose in the aftermath of 9/11 and to dispel the collective guilt unfairly assigned to all Muslims due to the actions of extremists who misuse the name of Islam.

Imam Subedar recognizes that, in addition to his spiritual responsibilities to his congregations and community, he must educate both Muslims and non-Muslims about the often misunderstood verses in the Quran, including those regarding jihad. He has been acknowledged for his contributions within his community and beyond, receiving recognition from politicians across the political spectrum, including Republicans and Democrats. He served on President George W. Bush’s White House Faith-Based and Community Initiative Committee and was the first Muslim to deliver the opening prayer at the Florida Senate. Additionally, he offered the prayer at President Biden’s Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service.

Imam Subedar has become an integral part of the fabric of both Islam and America, offering counsel during the tragedy of the Pulse nightclub shooting and attending the funeral of Muhammad Ali. In various ways, he continues to work towards building bridges and fostering understanding in the community.

Robert Gary:

Robert Gary has an extensive background in criminal justice. He has an LLM in Criminal Justice from the NYU School of Law. He served as a prosecutor in the Organized Section of the United States Justice Department, Acting Chief of the Cleveland Organized Crime Strike Force, Special Assistant United States Attorney, Director of the Ohio Organized Crime Council, and Special Assistant to the Governor of Ohio for criminal justice, as well as assistant county prosecutor. As a private attorney, he was appointed by a U.S. District Court judge to represent Muslims in federal prisons in 1995.

He utilizes his prosecutorial expertise to engage with his co-author, Imam Subedar, and, more importantly, to explore the text of the Quran.

His family was directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. His eldest daughter, an attorney, worked in an office near the World Trade Center and was engulfed by dust and debris when the building collapsed. His youngest daughter served as the Communications Manager of the American Red Cross for the September 11th Recovery Program, and she was present at Ground Zero shortly after the attacks.

Robert Gary wrote articles for the Lorain Journal discussing the intifada and the 9/11 attacks. His daughter and his press credentials granted him early access to the still-smoldering World Trade Center site. These experiences fueled his motivation to learn more about Islam and the underlying rage that prompted the attacks on U.S. soil.

To further his understanding of Muslims and Islam, he has traveled extensively in the Muslim world, visiting countries such as Iran, Egypt, Bahrain, Turkey, Jordan, and the UAE. During these travels, he met with English-speaking clerics or imams to enhance his knowledge of Islam.

He has lectured on the geopolitics of Islam and world terrorism. He has taught classes on the Quran and Islam at the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning and the Longboat Key Education Center, some of which were conducted in partnership with Imam Subedar. Additionally, he has lectured on Islam globally as a speaker for Crystal Cruise Line.

The unique relationship forged between Imam Subedar and Robert Garyーa Muslim and a Jewーhas endured through more than five years of co-authoring "I Am The Other," the conflict in Gaza, and the deep divisions created by the shift to the right in American politics.

Debating the American State Liberal Anxieties and the New Leviathan, 193-197【電子書籍】[ Anne M. Kornhauser ]
|

The New Deal left a host of political, institutional, and economic legacies. Among them was the restructuring of the government into an administrative state with a powerful executive leader and a large class of unelected officials. This "leviathan" state was championed by the political left, and its continued growth and dominance in American politics is seen as a product of liberal thoughtーto the extent that "Big Government" is now nearly synonymous with liberalism. Yet there were tensions among liberal statists even as the leviathan first arose. Born in crisis and raised by technocrats, the bureaucratic state always rested on shaky foundations, and the liberals who built and supported it disagreed about whether and how to temper the excesses of the state while retaining its basic structure and function.

Debating the American State traces the encounter between liberal thought and the rise of the administrative state and the resulting legitimacy issues that arose for democracy, the rule of law, and individual autonomy. Anne Kornhauser examines a broad and unusual cast of characters, including American social scientists and legal academics, the philosopher John Rawls, and German refugee intellectuals who had witnessed the destruction of democracy in the face of a totalitarian administrative state. In particular, she uncovers the sympathetic but concerned voicesーcommonly drowned out in the increasingly partisan political discourseーof critics who struggled to reconcile the positive aspects of the administrative state with the negative pressure such a contrivance brought on other liberal values such as individual autonomy, popular sovereignty, and social justice. By showing that the leviathan state was never given a principled and scrupulous justification by its proponents, Debating the American State reveals why the liberal state today remains haunted by programmatic dysfunctions and relentless political attacks.

Debating austerity in Ireland【
|

The austerity that followed the recent economic and financial crisis in has led to impassioned debates across the social sciences and the public at large. Although Ireland was not its only victim, the depth of the interacting economic, banking and budgetary crises has meant that the level of public interest has been especially intense. Among the hotly debated questions: what is austerity? Was it necessary? What have been its consequences? One of the defining features of the debate to date has been its tendency to polarise opinion and adopt a one-dimensional perspective. This book challenges us to adopt a more nuanced approach to understandings of austerity, and by extension the path to recovery. The book brings together leading national and international experts from across the social sciences to debate this traumatic period in Ireland's economic and social development. The papers were selected from a conference at the Royal Irish Academy, peer-reviewed and rewritten with the addition of a substantial introduction and conclusion by the editors.

Muslim Americans Debating the notions of American and un-American【電子書籍】[ Nahid Afrose Kabir ]
|

With Islamophobia on the rise in the US since 9/11, Muslims remain the most misunderstood people in American society. Taking as its point of departure the question of the compatibility of Islam and democracy, this book examines Muslims’ sense of belonging in American society. Based on extensive interview data across seven states in the US, the author explores the question of what it means to be American or un-American amongst Muslims, offering insights into common views of community, culture, and wider society. Through a combination of interviewees’ responses and discourse analysis of print media, Muslim Americans also raises the question of whether media coverage of the issue might itself be considered ‘un-American’.

An empirically grounded study of race and faith-based relations, this book undertakes a rigorous questioning of what it means to be American in the contemporary US. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and political science with interests in race, ethnicity, religion and national identity.

|

This book explores the subject of genocide through key debates and case studies. It analyses the dynamics of genocide ? the processes and mechanisms of acts committed with the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, religious or racial group ? in order to shed light upon its origins, characteristics and consequences.

Debating Genocide begins with an introduction to the concept of genocide. It then examines the colonial genocides at the end of the 19th- and start of the 20th-centuries; the Armenian Genocide of 1915-16; the Nazi 'Final Solution'; the Nazi genocide of the Gypsies; mass murder in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge; the genocides in the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda; and the genocide in Sudan in the early 21st century. It also includes a thematic chapter which covers gender and genocide, as well as issues of memory and memorialisation. Finally, the book considers how genocides end, as well as the questions of resolution and denial, with Lisa Pine examining the debates around prediction and prevention and the R2P (Responsibility to Protect) initiative.

This book is crucial for any students wanting to understand why genocides have occurred, why they still occur and what the key historical discussions around this subject entail.

|

'Debating Law' is a new series that gives scholarly experts the opportunity to offer contrasting perspectives on significant topics of contemporary, general interest.

In this second volume of the series, Conor Gearty argues that for rights to work effectively in the wider promotion of social justice, they need to be kept as far away as possible from the courts. He acknowledges the value of rights language in legal and political debate and accepts that human rights are not solely civil and political, with social rights language clearly having a progressive, emancipatory dimension. However he says that lawyers - even well-intentioned lawyers - damage the achievability of the kind of radical transformation in the priorities of states that a genuine commitment to social rights surely necessitates. Virginia Mantouvalou argues that social rights, defined as entitlements to the satisfaction of basic needs, are as essential for the well-being of the individual and the community as long-established civil and political rights. The real challenge, she suggests, is how best to give effect to social rights. Drawing on examples from around the world, she argues for their 'legalisation', and examines the role of courts and the role of legislatures in this process, both at a national and a international level.
