Debating the American Conservative Movement 1945 to the Present【電子書籍】[ Donald T. Critchlow ]
|

Debating the American Conservative Movement chronicles one of the most dramatic stories of modern American political history. The authors describe how a small band of conservatives in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War launched a revolution that shifted American politics to the right, challenged the New Deal order, transformed the Republican party into a voice of conservatism, and set the terms of debate in American politics as the country entered the new millennium. Historians Donald T. Critchlow and Nancy MacLean frame two opposing perspectives of how the history of conservatism in modern America can be understood, but readers are encouraged to reach their own conclusions through reading engaging primary documents.

Debating Malthus A Documentary Reader on Population, Resources, and the Environment【電子書籍】[ Paul S. Sutter ]
|

For centuries, thinking about the earth's increasing human population has been tied to environmental ideas and political action. This highly teachable collection of contextualized primary sources allows students to follow European and North American discussions about intertwined and evolving concepts of population, resources, and the natural environment from early contexts in the sixteenth century through to the present day.

Edited and introduced by Robert J. Mayhew, a noted biographer of Thomas Robert Malthusーwhose Essay on the Principle of Population (1798), excerpted here, is an influential and controversial take on the topicーthis volume explores themes including evolution, eugenics, war, social justice, birth control, environmental Armageddon, and climate change. Other responses to the idea of new "population bombs" are represented here by radical feminist work, by Indigenous views of the population-environment nexus, and by intersectional race-gender approaches. By learning the patterns of this discourse, students will be better able to critically evaluate historical conversations and contemporary debates.

John Rawls Debating the Major Questions【
|

John Rawls is widely considered one of the most important political philosophers of the 20th century, and his highly original and influential works play a central role in contemporary philosophical debates. This collection of original essays explores the outpouring of scholarship and debate inspired by Rawls's political philosophy. Given the vastness of this scholarship, this volume aims to provide inroads to its central themes and preoccupations. The volume is divided into ten parts, exploring ten distinct questions, for example: Can Rawls's conception of public reason offer determinate answers to major questions of justice? Is ideal theory useful or relevant to resolving issues of justice in the nonideal world? Are libertarians correct to criticize Rawls's work for failing to prioritize economic liberty? When institutions aim at equality, what is it that they should seek to equalize--primary goods, capabilities, or welfare? For each question, there is an introductory essay, providing an overview of the relevant arguments from Rawls's work and the historical contours of the debate that ensued. Each introductory essay is followed by two essays written by scholars who take opposing positions, which move the discussion forward in a fruitful way. This volume provides readers with clear and in-depth explication of Rawls's arguments, the most important critical dialogue generated in response to those arguments, and the dialogue's significance to contemporary politics.

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Cultural Studies - Canada, York University, language: English, abstract: Many have argued that there is no such thing as a Canadian culture or identity. This article explores the history of how schools in the past have shaped a national identity and how cultures transmit their vaules and traditions to their young. This article argues that there are twelve commonplaces about Canada that all Canadians, regardless of where they live or how long they have lived here can identify with. The schools across the country have an obligation to debate, argue and explore these twelve commonplaces thereby promoting a shared Canadian culture that is fluid, flexible and evolving. It argues that these twelve are not fixed in stone but are just a starting point for 'keeping the conversation going'. Debating the A Priori【電子書籍】[ Paul Boghossian ]
|

What kind of knowledge could be obtainable just by thinking? Debating the A Priori presents a series of exchanges between two leading philosophers on how to answer this question. In this extended debate, Boghossian and Williamson contribute alternating chapters which develop radically contrasting views and present detailed replies to each other's arguments. A central case is the nature of basic logical knowledge and the justification for basic deductive inferences, but the arguments range widely across epistemology, the philosophy of language, and metaphilosophy. The debate takes in the status of the distinctions between analytic and synthetic and between a priori and a posteriori, as well as problems concerning the conditions for linguistic understanding and competence, and the question of what it might be to grasp a concept or to have an intuition. Both authors explore implications for how philosophy itself works, or should work. The result vividly exposes some of the main fault lines in contemporary philosophy, concerning the relation between reason and experience, the status of basic beliefs, the nature of concepts and intuitions, the role of language in our understanding of the world, how to study knowledge, and what it is to do philosophy. Both authors provide conclusions which sum up their positions and place the arguments in context. Their lively and engaging exchanges allow the reader to follow up-close how a philosophical debatte evolves.

Debating Cancer: The Paradox In Cancer Research【電子書籍】[ Henry H Q Heng ]
|

Cancer research is at a crossroads. Traditionally, cancer has been thought of as a disease of gene mutation, where the stepwise accumulation of cancer gene mutations is the key, and the identification of common gene mutations has been considered to be essential for diagnosis and treatment. Despite extensive research efforts and accumulated knowledge on cancer genes and pathways, the clinical benefits of this traditional approach have been limited. Recently, cancer genome sequencing has revealed an extensive amount of genetic heterogeneity where the long-expected common mutation drivers have been difficult, if not impossible, to identify. These realities ultimately challenge the conceptual framework of current cancer biology. This book introduces a new concept of genome theory of cancer evolution, in an attempt to unify the field. Many important and representative, but often confusing, questions and paradoxes are critically analyzed. By comparing gene- and genome-based theories, the hidden flaws of many popular viewpoints are addressed. This discussion is intended to initiate a much-needed critical re-evaluation of current cancer research.

Has Science Displaced the Soul? Debating Love and Happiness【電子書籍】[ Kevin Sharpe ]
|

Can science explain powerful human emotions such as love and happiness? Or, are these emotions something more than the action of biochemicals and electrical impulses? Science is constantly uncovering the mysteries of our nature, but we are uneasy about submitting our most intimate feelings to its scrutiny. Religion tells us that God is love but neuroscience counters with love as a well-timed trickle of transmitters and hormones. In the 21st century, is it necessary to discard our traditional beliefs of a loving God in favor of dopamine? With doctorates in both mathematics and theology, Kevin Sharpe explores these notions and asks the question, Has Science Displaced the Soul?

Unflinching in facing these issues, Sharpe provides a clear and current summary of the discoveries of science and what our spiritual traditions still have to offer in the ongoing effort to understand our deepest urges. He confronts serious unanswered questions. How can the Divine direct a random process like evolution? How can we reconcile the big bang with creation out of nothing? Does it make sense to claim that the non-biological Divine shares in human purposes and desires? Sharpe's solution is controversial since it requires that we demolish and reconstruct some of our most trusted conceptions. By examining the ways in which scientific and religious claims can be harmonized, he offers a radical and powerful interpretation of love and happiness in the divine context.

Debating Hate Crime Language, Legislatures, and the Law in Canada【電子書籍】[ Allyson M. Lunny ]
|

Debating Hate Crime examines the language and argumentation used by parliamentarians, senators, and committee witnesses to debate Canada’s “hate-crime” laws. These lively, and at times raucous, legislative debates and committee hearings reveal much about party politics, public policy, and social issues of the day, including citizenship, nationhood, and Canadian values. Drawing on discourse analysis, semiotics, and critical psychoanalysis, Allyson Lunny explores how the tropes, metaphors, and other linguistic signifiers used in these debates expose the particular concerns, trepidations, and anxieties of Canadian lawmakers and the expert witnesses called before their committees. In so doing, Lunny reveals and interrogates the meaning and social signification of the endorsement of, and resistance to, hate law. The result is a rich historical and analytical account of some of Canada’s most passionate public debates on victimization, rightful citizenship, social threat, and moral erosion.

I Am The Other Debating the Role of Islam in a Divided America【電子書籍】[ Imam Azhar Subedar ]
|

In today's divided America, hatred, fear, and suspicion often prevail. If you are a Muslim, do you ever wonder why you are feared? Conversely, if you are a non-Muslim, do you have the information necessary to form an informed opinion about Muslims?
This book stands alone because it simultaneously speaks to Muslims and Islamic skeptics. It features a thought-provoking dialogue between an Islamic scholar and a non-Muslim former federal prosecutor. The dialogue explores whether a practicing Muslim can be accepted in a Judeo-Christian West that is often Islamophobic and hostile. The conversation unfolds between two distinct individualsーone a devout Muslim and the other a secular Jewーboth of whom prioritize the preservation of democracy. Their exchange is enlightening and respectful, addressing divisive issues without resorting to demonization.
Amidst ongoing conflicts between Muslims and Jews and a global resurgence of authoritarianism, the authors engage in critical discussions about war, political ideology, and the potential for coexistence. Drawing from their vastly different life experiences, they aim to inform and empower readers to form opinions based on facts rather than emotions.
This book is for non-Muslims seeking to understand Islam and have their questions about the faith answered. It is also for Muslims who wish to comprehend the root causes of the fear and distrust they often encounter in the West almost daily.

About the Author

Imam Azhar Subedar:

Imam Azhar Subedar is an Islamic leader and scholar born and raised in Canada. He completed a transformative decade of Islamic studies in the United Kingdom, earning a Master’s in Islamic Sciences and Arabic Literature. Imam Subedar addresses contemporary social issues through the lens of the Quran. Since 2002, he has been a driving force within U.S. Muslim communities, serving as an advocate, strategist for Islamic organizations, and a respected spiritual leader.

His commitment to empowering individuals and fostering community growth was shaped by September 11, 2001. On that day, while traveling by bus from Pakistan to New Delhi, India, he learned how the world had changed shortly after arriving. The troubling signs he experienced on his journey foreshadowed the challenges that would follow from that moment on; his life as a Muslim and as an Imam was forever altered. He made it his mission to combat the Islamophobia that arose in the aftermath of 9/11 and to dispel the collective guilt unfairly assigned to all Muslims due to the actions of extremists who misuse the name of Islam.

Imam Subedar recognizes that, in addition to his spiritual responsibilities to his congregations and community, he must educate both Muslims and non-Muslims about the often misunderstood verses in the Quran, including those regarding jihad. He has been acknowledged for his contributions within his community and beyond, receiving recognition from politicians across the political spectrum, including Republicans and Democrats. He served on President George W. Bush’s White House Faith-Based and Community Initiative Committee and was the first Muslim to deliver the opening prayer at the Florida Senate. Additionally, he offered the prayer at President Biden’s Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service.

Imam Subedar has become an integral part of the fabric of both Islam and America, offering counsel during the tragedy of the Pulse nightclub shooting and attending the funeral of Muhammad Ali. In various ways, he continues to work towards building bridges and fostering understanding in the community.

Robert Gary:

Robert Gary has an extensive background in criminal justice. He has an LLM in Criminal Justice from the NYU School of Law. He served as a prosecutor in the Organized Section of the United States Justice Department, Acting Chief of the Cleveland Organized Crime Strike Force, Special Assistant United States Attorney, Director of the Ohio Organized Crime Council, and Special Assistant to the Governor of Ohio for criminal justice, as well as assistant county prosecutor. As a private attorney, he was appointed by a U.S. District Court judge to represent Muslims in federal prisons in 1995.

He utilizes his prosecutorial expertise to engage with his co-author, Imam Subedar, and, more importantly, to explore the text of the Quran.

His family was directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. His eldest daughter, an attorney, worked in an office near the World Trade Center and was engulfed by dust and debris when the building collapsed. His youngest daughter served as the Communications Manager of the American Red Cross for the September 11th Recovery Program, and she was present at Ground Zero shortly after the attacks.

Robert Gary wrote articles for the Lorain Journal discussing the intifada and the 9/11 attacks. His daughter and his press credentials granted him early access to the still-smoldering World Trade Center site. These experiences fueled his motivation to learn more about Islam and the underlying rage that prompted the attacks on U.S. soil.

To further his understanding of Muslims and Islam, he has traveled extensively in the Muslim world, visiting countries such as Iran, Egypt, Bahrain, Turkey, Jordan, and the UAE. During these travels, he met with English-speaking clerics or imams to enhance his knowledge of Islam.

He has lectured on the geopolitics of Islam and world terrorism. He has taught classes on the Quran and Islam at the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning and the Longboat Key Education Center, some of which were conducted in partnership with Imam Subedar. Additionally, he has lectured on Islam globally as a speaker for Crystal Cruise Line.

The unique relationship forged between Imam Subedar and Robert Garyーa Muslim and a Jewーhas endured through more than five years of co-authoring "I Am The Other," the conflict in Gaza, and the deep divisions created by the shift to the right in American politics.

Debating the American State Liberal Anxieties and the New Leviathan, 193-197【電子書籍】[ Anne M. Kornhauser ]
|

The New Deal left a host of political, institutional, and economic legacies. Among them was the restructuring of the government into an administrative state with a powerful executive leader and a large class of unelected officials. This "leviathan" state was championed by the political left, and its continued growth and dominance in American politics is seen as a product of liberal thoughtーto the extent that "Big Government" is now nearly synonymous with liberalism. Yet there were tensions among liberal statists even as the leviathan first arose. Born in crisis and raised by technocrats, the bureaucratic state always rested on shaky foundations, and the liberals who built and supported it disagreed about whether and how to temper the excesses of the state while retaining its basic structure and function.

Debating the American State traces the encounter between liberal thought and the rise of the administrative state and the resulting legitimacy issues that arose for democracy, the rule of law, and individual autonomy. Anne Kornhauser examines a broad and unusual cast of characters, including American social scientists and legal academics, the philosopher John Rawls, and German refugee intellectuals who had witnessed the destruction of democracy in the face of a totalitarian administrative state. In particular, she uncovers the sympathetic but concerned voicesーcommonly drowned out in the increasingly partisan political discourseーof critics who struggled to reconcile the positive aspects of the administrative state with the negative pressure such a contrivance brought on other liberal values such as individual autonomy, popular sovereignty, and social justice. By showing that the leviathan state was never given a principled and scrupulous justification by its proponents, Debating the American State reveals why the liberal state today remains haunted by programmatic dysfunctions and relentless political attacks.

Muslim Americans Debating the notions of American and un-American【電子書籍】[ Nahid Afrose Kabir ]
|

With Islamophobia on the rise in the US since 9/11, Muslims remain the most misunderstood people in American society. Taking as its point of departure the question of the compatibility of Islam and democracy, this book examines Muslims’ sense of belonging in American society. Based on extensive interview data across seven states in the US, the author explores the question of what it means to be American or un-American amongst Muslims, offering insights into common views of community, culture, and wider society. Through a combination of interviewees’ responses and discourse analysis of print media, Muslim Americans also raises the question of whether media coverage of the issue might itself be considered ‘un-American’.

An empirically grounded study of race and faith-based relations, this book undertakes a rigorous questioning of what it means to be American in the contemporary US. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and political science with interests in race, ethnicity, religion and national identity.

Debating medieval Europe serves as an entry point for studying and teaching medieval history. Rather than simply presenting foundational knowledge or introducing sources, it provides the reader with frameworks for understanding the distinctive historiography of the period, digging beneath the historical accounts provided by other textbooks to expose the contested foundations of apparently settled narratives. It opens a space for discussion and debate, as well as providing essential context for the sometimes overwhelming abundance of specialist scholarship. Volume I addresses the early Middle Ages, covering the period c. 450?c. 1050. The chapters are organised chronologically, and cover such topics as the Carolingian Order, England and the ‘Atlantic Archipelago’, the Vikings and Ottonian Germany.
Unsure which of its legacies are true and which to embrace, Texas grapples with an identity crisis. One camp insists that the state’s roots in slavery, segregation, and cotton make it southern. Another argues that its Native and ranching history make it western. Outside Texas, southern and western historians who don’t know what to make of the state ignore it altogether. In his innovative settling of the question, Glen Sample Ely examines the state’s historical DNA, making sense of Lone Star identity west of the hundredth meridian and defining Texas’s place in the American West.Focusing on the motives that shape how Texans appropriate their pastーfrom cashing in on tourism to avoiding historical realitiesーEly reveals the inner workings of a multiplicity of Texas identities.

Debating the Roman de la Rose A Critical Anthology【

|

Around the year 1400, the poet Christine de Pizan initiated a public debate in France over the literary "truth" and merit of the Roman of the Rose, perhaps the most renowned work of the French Middle Ages. She argued against what she considered to be misrepresentations of female virtue and vice in the Rose. Her bold objections aroused the support and opposition of some of the period’s most famous intellectuals, notable Jean Gerson, whose sermons on the subject are important literary documents. "The Quarrel of the Rose" is the name given by modern scholars to the collection of these and other documents, including both poetry and letters, that offer a vivid account of this important controversy.

As the first dual-language version of the "Quarrel" documents, this volume will be of great interest to medievalists and an ideal addition to the Routledge Medieval Texts series. Along with translations of the actual debate epistles, the volume includes several relevant passages from the Romance of the Rose, as well as a chronology of events and ample biography of source materials.

Desegregating Comics Debating Blackness in the Golden Age of American Comics【電子書籍】[ Qiana Whitted ]

**Winner of the Comics Studies Society Edited Book Prize

Shortlisted for the Best Academic / Scholarly Work Eisner Award

Honorable Mention for the Harry Shaw and Katrina Hazzard-Donald Award for Outstanding Work in African-American Popular Culture Studies from the Popular Culture Association**

Some comics fans view the industry’s Golden Age (1930s-1950s) as a challenging time when it comes to representations of race, an era when the few Black characters appeared as brutal savages, devious witch doctors, or unintelligible minstrels. Yet the true portrait is more complex and reveals that even as caricatures predominated, some Golden Age comics creators offered more progressive and nuanced depictions of Black people.

Desegregating Comics assembles a team of leading scholars to explore how debates about the representation of Blackness shaped both the production and reception of Golden Age comics. Some essays showcase rare titles like Negro Romance and consider the formal innovations introduced by Black comics creators like Matt Baker and Alvin Hollingsworth, while others examine the treatment of race in the work of such canonical cartoonists as George Herriman and Will Eisner. The collection also investigates how Black fans read and loved comics, but implored publishers to stop including hurtful stereotypes. As this book shows, Golden Age comics artists, writers, editors, distributors, and readers engaged in heated negotiations over how Blackness should be portrayed, and the outcomes of those debates continue to shape popular culture today.

Blood Must Tell Debating race and identity in the Canadian House of Commons, 1880-1925【電子書籍】[ Glen Williams ]

Surveying more than four decades of debates in Canada’s House of Commons around the turn of the twentieth century, Blood Must Tell shows that biologically determinist race-thinking was never accepted by its elected members as unassailable truth. Although racist ideas were habitually and openly articulated by some of Canada’s leading parliamentarians, it is also true that racial determinists regularly met with forceful opposition from defenders of the ideals of liberal and Christian equality. In fact, it was not unusual to see racist statements challenged on the spot and to hear members call each other out for being intolerant and prejudiced. Political ideas of racial equality and multiculturalism were by no means newly discovered in Canada after World War II. They were already present, and well positioned to become hegemonic in contemporary Canadian political life.

Debating the Woman Question in the French Third Republic, 1870?1920【電子書籍】[ Karen Offen ]

|

Karen Offen offers a magisterial reconstruction and analysis of the debates around relations between women and men, how they are constructed, and how they should be organized, that raged in France and its French-speaking neighbors from 1870 to 1920. The 'woman question' encompassed subjects from maternity and childbirth, and the upbringing and education of girls to marriage practices and property law, the organization of households, the distribution of work inside and outside the household, intimate sexual relations, religious beliefs and moral concerns, government-sanctioned prostitution, economic and political citizenship, and the politics of population growth. The book shows how the expansion of economic opportunities for women and the drop in the birth rate further exacerbated the debates over their status, roles, and possibilities. With the onset of the First World War, these debates were temporarily placed on hold, but they would be revived by 1916 and gain momentum during France's post-war recovery.

Debating the Kennedy Presidency【電子書籍】[ James N. Giglio ]

|

Despite the brevity of John F. Kennedy's presidency, its significance endures. From the Cuban Missile Crisis and the creation of the Berlin Wall to the Peace Corps and the civil rights movement, Kennedy's presidency was one of crisis and change. In Debating the Kennedy Presidency, noted scholars James N. Giglio and Stephen G. Rabe examine the successes and failures of Kennedy's foreign and domestic policies.

Rabe focuses on the administration's foreign relations and argues that JFK was a relentless Cold Warrior who perpetuated the Cold War more than he resolved it. Conversely, Giglio sympathetically surveys domestic policies and defends Kennedy's record by emphasizing the constraints under which the president had to operate. The differing viewpoints of the two authors, as well as the supplementary documents, provide an ideal introduction allowing readers to examine the issues and draw their own conclusions about America's 35th president.

New Philanthropy and Social Justice Debating the Conceptual and Policy Discourse【
|

There is a broad consensus that traditional philanthropy has the potential to be transformative and address inequalities and injustices, as well as provide relief to the poor. Over the last two decades individual capitalists and private corporations have become increasingly involved in philanthropy, often through foundations targeted at helping to reduce social problems associated with poverty, disease and food insecurity. This important book questions the political and ideological reasons behind rich individuals and large companies choosing to engage in poverty reduction through philanthropy. The question of concern is not whether new philanthropy is good or bad, but what motivates this form of giving and whether the sources of new philanthropy funding are legitimate. The book argues that this new philanthropy risks being a sticking plaster without long-term results, because it fails to tackle social injustice or the structural reasons for inequality.

It will be of value to academics, upper-level undergraduates and postgraduates in politics, sociology, economics and development studies.
