Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life【電子書籍】[ Alpheus Thomas Mason ]

“There can be no question that [*Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life*] is a triumph of research and organization, clear, precise and comprehensive. Mr. Mason has quoted copiously from Brandeis’ speeches, letters and judicial opinions. He has delved deeply into corporation finances and legal technicalities. One could not reasonably ask for more information about Brandeis than Mr. Mason has assembled...” ー Orville Prescott,?***The New York Times***

“Professor Mason has written more than an authoritative record and interpretation of what he calls in his suggestive subtitle ‘A Free Man’s Life.’ This stimulating, highly readable book is also a chronicle of the processes of American democracy at work. This is a biography with a larger meaning ー on all counts, it deserves a wide audience.” ー Harvey Bresler,?***The New York Times***

“In a great biography the author has done full justice to a great man ー and given it a symbolism that makes it virtually a composite of American social history during a half century. Rooted in years of study, evidenced by previous publications on Brandeis, the biographer reveals to his readers Louis Brandeis, the people’s lawyer who became a Justice of the Supreme Court. He has done a magnificent job, covering every phase of his life, with main focus on his professional and public service, but with enough of his personal life, enough of his friends ー and his enemies ー and the personalities who crossed his path, enough of anecdote and minor incident, to give the book- and its subject ー lasting vitality.” ー?***Kirkus Reviews***

“[Brandeis’] life, as Professor Mason recounts it, was an unending series of causes and campaigns. He threw himself into them with gusto. He said of himself that he ‘would rather fight than eat.’... [Brandeis] was indeed a great man, as Mr. Mason’s biography makes clear. It is primarily a public and political biography; the intimate man is implied rather than described. But Professor Mason within the limits he has set has done a splendid job of research; he has told the story in great detail with care, precision, and detachment... He has done well to quote copiously from Brandeis who spoke and wrote with verve and with an eye to education and action.” ー Louis L. Jaffe, University of Chicago Law Review

“[A] superior, full-length biography... [Brandeis] was the arch foe of monopoly in industry, stood out against the closed shop in labor relations, and had no faith in socialism. Always, as Professor Mason stresses again and again, his method was to achieve complete mastery of the facts in relation to any problem in which he became interested and then to promote what he deemed to be sound solutions, enlisting aid in every conceivable quarter; keeping up a stream of advocacy and comment, signed and unsigned; stimulating others to do likewise; and giving of his substance as well as of his time and energy to almost every cause he attacked-leaving nothing to chance and no stone unturned. All this as a private citizen, while practicing law in the city of Boston... All hail... to Professor Mason for presenting us with this full length history of the embodiment of a living ideal. Into it have gone exhaustive study of the correspondence and documents and firsthand knowledge of the subject. This book will undoubtedly be widely read, as it should be; and as it is read, the Brandeis influence will be strengthened and prolonged in American life. Such a work is a major contribution to society, as well as a source of unending pleasure to the reader.” ー Ralph F. The Story of Prometheus The Friend of Man【電子書籍】[ W. Adams ]

“At the time of the creation, after covering the newborn Earth with luxuriant vegetation, and peopling it with living creatures of all kinds, Eros perceived that it would be necessary to endow them with instincts which would enable them to preserve and enjoy the life they had received. He therefore called the youngest two sons of Iapetus to his aid, and bade them make a judicious distribution of gifts to all living creatures, and create and endow a superior being, called Man, to rule over all the others. Prometheus’ and Epimetheus’ first care was, very naturally, to provide for the beings already created. These they endowed with such reckless generosity, that all their favours were soon dispensed, and none remained for the endowment of man. Although they had not the remotest idea how to overcome this difficulty, they proceeded to fashion man from clay.”...

This book deals with the story of Prometheurs, hero of mythology, who, on account of various services rendered to men, was chained by Zeus to a rock. Some legends represent the offense of Prometheus as stealing fire from heaven for the benefit of men.

Take us the Little Foxes Collected Poems【電子書籍】[ Miles Burrows ]

An Irish Times Best Poetry Books of 2021

The poetry of Miles Burrows was discovered in 1966 when Tom Maschler, already an editor at Cape, heard him give a public reading in London. Cape published him. After that, Burrows continued his life in many walks, most of them medical. Having studied Greats at Oxford, he determined to become an intellectual and learned to smoke black Russian cigarettes, reviewing occasionally for the New Statesman. He worked as a GP and then as a psychiatrist. He was briefly a trawlerman, then a doctor in the New Guinea Highlands, in the American Hospital for Hmong tribe refugees on the Thai-Laos border, in a Catholic mission Hospital in Eastern Taiwan, in the Middle East and in Suffolk.

This Collected Poems is a rich harvest from the decades between 1966 and 2021. The poems are primarily conversational. The poet is keen to get into exclusive places he has no right to be ? clubs, social strata, religions. Much of the adventure, the disrupted narrative, has to do with being out of place. Its long narratives ? work as a trawlerman in Iceland, a traditional funeral in Taiwan ? open on worlds that are made vertiginously real.

Give Us this Day【電子書籍】[ Mark R. Turner ]

This is a short story about the people of the small, mountain town of Arborview under the pressure of isolation and threats when the metropolis down the hill is attacked by terrorists. Martial law and news reports of bio-terrorist events in the city frighten the population normally used to a quiet, rural atmosphere. Some are inclined to take the law into their own hands instead of leaving it to the local sheriff. Others see an opportunity to cash in on selling supplies. Most are just worried about their friends and families in the city. But when a stranger hikes into town from the back road the threat moves them to take action. The stranger shows up all around town observing their nervous preparations to defend themselves and their property. One couple's daughter, impatient with the situation, leaves town down the same back road from which activists expect an invasion. Then their main source of food, the grocery store, catches fire. The church has called for an all town prayer meeting and the whole town is gathered unsuspecting that the stranger has been seen heading that direction. Will the volunteer militia catch him before he wipes out the population of Arborview in one sweep?

Asmodeus The Demon King of Desire and Wrath【電子書籍】[ Davina Wright ]

From the shadows of ancient Persia to the grimoires of the Renaissance, one name has endured as the embodiment of lust, wrath, and mockery: Asmodeus, the Demon King of Desire and Wrath.

This deeply researched and richly written volume traces the full arc of his legacy across cultures and centuries. In the Book of Tobit, he appears as the jealous spirit who slays husbands on the wedding night. In the rabbinic tales of Solomon, he is both servant and adversary, humbled by divine power yet cunning enough to dethrone a king. In medieval demonology he rises to sovereign rank, a prince of lust commanding legions, feared by exorcists and invoked by magicians. Within the mystical structure of Kabbalah he rules the qliphoth, the shadows of passion that cling to holiness.

More than myth, Asmodeus endures as archetype. He is the shadow of desire, the corruption of intimacy, the tyranny of passion crowned as king. His mocking laughter echoes through history, warning of the peril that awaits when lust is unrestrained and wrath is exalted.

Davina Wright brings together scripture, legend, philosophy, and mysticism in a work that is both scholarly and haunting. Asmodeus: The Demon King of Desire and Wrath is not only a study of a demon but a mirror of humanity's eternal struggle with passion, obsession, and downfall.

Step into the darkness and witness the enduring legacy of the demon king whose shadow has never lifted.

This is book 2.

The Doughty Women: Susan

Susan Doughty is a Government Girl residing in Washington, D.C. in May of 1942. Sharing an apartment with two friends at the height of the war effort, she treks off to work every day at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in what has been, until now, a humdrum job.

While she worries about her sister, famous war correspondent Kit Doughty, currently stationed in London and recently married, Susan finds herself yearning for her own adventures. Because, by comparison, her existence seems very tame, very safe. Humdrum.

Alas for Susan. A wish once made cannot be easily unmade.

Her promotion at work, from the fingerprinting division to one more secretive involving sabotage and foreign agents, comes with a new boss. Matthew Crowley is tightly wound, buttoned-up, and greets her with a criticismーeither of her performance or her appearanceーalmost every day. Which does not make for the most harmonious of relationships.

Enter Dexter Mulrooney, a handsome, charming Irishman oddly enough in the same line of business. Secret agent. Operative. Spy. He and Susan have barely begun enjoying a possible relationship when he inexplicably disappears. On some spook-like activities, Susan can only assume.

Just about the time she finds that one roommate, Clara Dunlap, is involved with a married man, and that the soldier lover of the other, Betty Draper, has gone missing in North Africa, her life is further complicated by that fact that she is being stalked.

Be careful what you wish for, Susan Doughty.

Give Us the Ballot The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America【電子書籍】[ Ari Berman ]

The act enfranchised millions of Americans and is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of the civil rights movement. And yet, fifty years later, we are still fighting heated battles over race, representation, and political power, with lawmakers devising new strategies to keep minorities out of the voting booth and with the Supreme Court declaring a key part of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional.

Berman brings the struggle over voting rights to life through meticulous archival research, in-depth interviews with major figures in the debate, and incisive on-the-ground reporting. In vivid prose, he takes the reader from the demonstrations of the civil rights era to the halls of Congress to the chambers of the Supreme Court. At this important moment in history, Give Us the Ballot provides new insight into one of the most vital political and civil rights issues of our time.

Never in baseball history had a last place team rebounded to take the pennant the following season. Yet in 1991, lightning struck twice as the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves, a pair of cellar dwellers the year before, faced each other in an unforgettable World Series.
For both clubs, the turnaround was one for the ages. Minnesota and Atlanta rallied throughout the 1991 season around a crop of rising starsーKirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek, Tom Glavine, John Smoltzーwho each spirited their team's unlikely run all the way to the World Series. And what a Fall Classic it proved to be, with five of the seven games decided by a single run, four decided on the final pitch, and threeーincluding game sevenーending in extra innings. When the final out was recorded, the cover headline in Baseball Weekly read: "Best World Series Ever."
In Down to the Last Pitch, Tim Wendel delivers all the hopes, dreams, and drama in a seasonーand a Seriesーtouched by magic.

FRANKENSTEIN or The Modern Prometheus the revised 1831 edition【電子書籍】[ Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley ]

This is the Revised 1831 Edition of FRANKENSTEIN; OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS, a novel written by the English author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley about the young science student Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque but sentient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Shelley had travelled through Europe in 1814, journeying along the river Rhine in Germany with a stop in Gernsheim which is just 17 km away from Frankenstein Castle, where, two centuries before, an alchemist was engaged in experiments. Later, she travelled in the region of Geneva (Switzerland)-where much of the story takes place-and the topic of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy Shelley. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made; her dream later evolved into the novel's story. Shelley completed her writing in May 1817, and Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was first published on 11 March 1818 by the small London publishing house of Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor, & Jones. The second edition of Frankenstein was published on 11 August 1822 in two volumes (by G. and W. B. Whittaker) following the success of the stage play Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein by Richard Brinsley Peake; this edition credited Mary Shelley as the author. On 31 October 1831, the first "popular" edition in one volume appeared, published by Henry Colburn & Richard Bentley. This edition was heavily revised by Mary Shelley, partially because of pressure to make the story more conservative, and included a new, longer preface by her, presenting a somewhat embellished version of the genesis of the story. This edition tends to be the one most widely read now, although editions containing the original 1818 text are still published. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text, arguing that it preserves the spirit of Shelley's original publication.

As Others See Us The Causes and Consequences of Foreign Perceptions of America【電子書籍】[ Stephen Brooks ]

One of the ironies of the post-Cold War world, in which the power of the United States is without rival, is that the costs of isolationism and ignorance are greater than ever. The temptation to imagine that the rest of the world matters less than before is enticing, as America basks in the triumphant glow of a world in which capitalism and democracy, under the aegis of American leadership, are thought to have vanquished all rivals. Although it is unlikely that Americans will come to pay much attention to the rest of the world anytime soonーexcept when their citizens are threatened or killed abroad, or when they are persuaded that the threat of foreigners doing harm at home seems realーtheir failure to do so cripples the ability of the United States to understand a world in which American interests, security, and prosperity are embedded to an unprecedented degree.

As Others See Us investigates the causes and consequences of the world’s perceptions of America. It proceeds from the premise that the images, ideas, and information that foreign populations have of the United States and Americans come from a number of sources, most of which are mediated. Some of these sources are American, Hollywood especially. Others are located outside the country, in the media, educational, religious, and political systems through which foreign populations learn about America. Any attempt to understand the "what" and "why" of foreign perceptions of America needs to look closely at these external determinants of how the image and interpretation of the United States is constructed in different societies.

Give Us This Day Devotionals, Volume 5 Acts【電子書籍】[ Charles Erlandson ]

Give Us This Day is a unique daily devotional commentary for the entire New Testament based on the ancient method called lectio divina. Lectio divina, or "divine reading," is the method used by the early church and countless Christians through the centuries to read the Scriptures to form and transform the soul more than merely to inform the mind. Give Us This Day deals in depth with entire passages and their contexts. Rather than selecting only certain portions of the New Testament to write about, Fr. Charles has written a devotional for each and every passage of the New Testament. Fr. Charles writes for the whole person: he's not afraid to use his sense of humor, and he carefully relates the Bible not only to the individual's life but also to the life of the Church. At the end of each day's devotional, an appropriate Prayer is offered, as well as Points for Further Reflection on the day's lesson. Prometheus the Firebringer 1985【電子書籍】[ Stephen W. Sweigart ]

The myth of Prometheus tells of a powerful Greek Titan who stole fire from Olympus and brought it to Earth as a gift to mankind. He was punished for lighting the world, and modern artists sometimes suffer the same fate. They bring enlightenment only to be shunned; they share parts of themselves only to go mad in the giving. Yet, creation continues, no matter the cost. Sweigart’s creative words bring text alive, and vivid descriptions allow readers to feel pain and despair as well as hear music in their imaginations. The work is challenging in the best of ways as poems entertain until the final page. Prometheus brought light to a dark world, just like artists who pay the price for their brilliance but continue creating anyway.

The Art of Political Framing How Politicians Convince Us That They Are Right【電子書籍】[ Hans Bruijn ]

Politicians employ a wide range of strategies to achieve their goals - and language is one of them. What impact does their language have on us, on their opponents, on the public opinion?, If language matters, then the interesting question naturally arises how politicians use language to their advantage? How do they use it to convince us of the truth of their views? These questions take us into the world of political framing, which has attracted a lot of attention in recent times and forms the subject of this book. Framing is obviously not a new phenomenon, nor is it the preserve of right-wing politicians, as is sometimes suggested. The author discusses both old and new examples of framing, as well as various left and right-wing frames. The examples presented in this book have been carefully selected, in the hope that they will not only help you understand the game of framing and reframing but also show you how much impact you can have by using the right words.

Corporate executive Deanna Ricke discovered that the twenty-first century is a tough time to be a mom. From school shootings to pervasive porn, from children chained in basements to idolized addicts, the threats to her children were overwhelming, and fear of making the wrong decision nearly incapacitated her. She was no stranger to the debilitating effects of fear, however. In her work as a communications consultant, Deanna spent years helping corporate executives conquer their fear of public speaking. She knew that fear could be methodically, effectively managed.

What if I fought fear with faith, instead of narcotics? she thought. What if I turned to God instead of Google? Would that make me crazy or just Catholic?

An achingly honest and funny tale of how one worried working mom fought fear with faith and began hearing from God in wonderful ways. Deanna weaves together her own moving personal stories with Scripture, modern lyrics, and practical advice. She shares the seventeen steps she took to move from doubtful to devoutful. Money is the root of all evil or the love of money is the root of all evil. Do we assume that the problem is human nature, not money itself? This book demonstrates that the problem is not human nature, and it is not money itself. The problem is who issues the money, how it is issued, and what it is issued for. Monetary reform is necessary but not sufficient to bring about the world we know in our hearts. To bring about the world we know in our hearts, we must share that knowing with each other. This book aims to show that when the individual is Free to express the love that wells up naturally to fulfill their life’s purpose; when society is Just because it is based on the people’s active consent and participation in adjudicating / remediating harm; and when everything that the people provide each other to satisfy their needs and desires is the result of a voluntary initiative inspired and supported by the Community, and funded as a right; then the individual will be sovereign and will be creating, contributing to, and maintaining a society that benefits everyone.

How Close Reading Made Us The Transnational Legacies of New Criticism【電子書籍】[ Yael Segalovitz ]

Shows how the method of close reading traveled from the United States to Brazil and Israel, revealing its profound impact on global modernisms and reframing the lasting significance of New Criticism.

Does reading shape who we are? What happens to the relationship between reading and subject-formation as methods of interpretation travel globally? Yael Segalovitz probes these questions by tracing the transnational journey of the New Critical practice of close reading from the United States to Brazil and Israel in the mid-twentieth century. Challenging the traditional view of New Criticism as a purely aesthetic project, Segalovitz illustrates its underlying pedagogical objective: to cultivate close readers capable of momentarily suspending subjectivity through focused attention. How Close Reading Made Us shows that close reading, as a technique of the self, exerted a far-reaching influence on international modernist literary production, impacting writers such as Clarice Lispector, Yehuda Amichai, William Faulkner, Jo?o Guimar?es Rosa, and A. B. Yehoshua. To appreciate close reading's enduring vitality in literary studies and effectively adapt this method to the present, Segalovitz argues, we must comprehend its many legacies beyond the confines of the Anglophone tradition.

Give Us This Day [Illustrated Edition]【電子書籍】[ Sidney Stewart ]

Includes The Prisoners Of War In Japanese Hands During World War Two pack with 130 photos, plans and photos.
In Give Us This Day a young Oklahoman, a survivor of Bataan, reveals the terrible truth about a little-known aspect of the Pacific war as he experienced it from the beginning in the Philippines. He was a captive of the Japanese for more than three years; he knew one after another all the torments of confinement in conditions of primitive barbarism. True though his story is, it almost defies belief. With touching simplicity he recounts the stark and shocking details of one of the most shameful features of that war ー the treatment of American soldiers who fell into the hands of the Japanese. At first Stewart hated his captors, but in the end hatred gave place to a dawning comprehension that the Japanese were as different from us as the men of Genghis Khan.
"It is one of the most harrowing and debilitating chronicles that I have read. . . . He describes the ordeal brilliantly; he harbors no resentments apparently, and he has emerged from an inferno of bestiality with utter serenity." ー Maxwell Geismar, Saturday Review
"An impressive and moving book." ー David Dempsey, New York Times
"His is no ordinary prisoner-of-war story; better written than most, it contains no tales of swashbuckling defiance. . . . The force of this book is its testimony to the indomitable strength of the human spirit." ー Manchester Guardian
"The plain narrative of this story would by itself have been fascinating, but this book is far more than a story, it is a work of art." ー Andr? Siegfried, Academie Francaise
"Sidney Stewart's composed narrative is one of the most noble documents ever penned by a prisoner of war. The companions he writes about remained men to the end, until at last only one man remained; he survived to write this unforgettable, this magnificent story." ー George Slocombe, New York Herald Tribune [Paris]

Give Us This Day Devotionals, Volume 4 John【電子書籍】[ Charles Erlandson ]

Each devotional concludes with a suggested Resolution to put into effect what the Spirit has stirred up in the heart of the reader during the course of his reading, meditation, and prayer.

The World of Prometheus The Politics of Punishing in Democratic Athens【電子書籍】[ Danielle S. Allen ]

For Danielle Allen, punishment is more a window onto democratic Athens' fundamental values than simply a set of official practices. From imprisonment to stoning to refusal of burial, instances of punishment in ancient Athens fueled conversations among ordinary citizens and political and literary figures about the nature of justice. Re-creating in vivid detail the cultural context of this conversation, Allen shows that punishment gave the community an opportunity to establish a shining myth of harmony and cleanliness: that the city could be purified of anger and social struggle, and perfect order achieved. Each member of the city--including notably women and slaves--had a specific role to play in restoring equilibrium among punisher, punished, and society. The common view is that democratic legal processes moved away from the "emotional and personal" to the "rational and civic," but Allen shows that anger, honor, reciprocity, spectacle, and social memory constantly prevailed in Athenian law and politics.

Allen draws upon oratory, tragedy, and philosophy to present the lively intellectual climate in which punishment was incurred, debated, and inflicted by Athenians. Broad in scope, this book is one of the first to offer both a full account of punishment in antiquity and an examination of the political stakes of democratic punishment. It will engage classicists, political theorists, legal historians, and anyone wishing to learn more about the relations between institutions and culture, normative ideas and daily events, punishment and democracy.
