The Tao of Solomon Unlocking the Perennial Wisdom of Ecclesiastes【電子書籍】[ Rabbi Rami Shapiro ]
|

In The Tao of Solomon, Rabbi Rami Shapiro unravels the golden philosophical threads of wisdom in the book of Ecclesiastes, reweaving the vibrant book of the Bible into a 21st century tapestry. Shapiro explores the timeless truth that we are merely a drop in the endless river of time, and reveals a path to finding personal and spiritual fulfillment even as we embrace our impermanent place in the universe.

The Tao of Solomon is not a new translation of Ecclesiastes; rather, it is a re-visioning of the sacred text that acknowledges that the only constant in life is change, that nothing lasts forever, and that only by releasing our hold on permanence can we finding personal peace.

In 'Ecclesiastical History of England,' John Stoughton meticulously chronicles the development of the Church in England from its inception to the 17th century. Through a blend of narrative history and theological reflection, Stoughton employs a scholarly yet accessible literary style that invites both academic inquiry and lay readership. His work captures the profound interplay between religious beliefs and socio-political dynamics, offering insights into the complexities of ecclesiastical power, reformations, and dissenters during a transformative period in English history. The book stands as a significant contribution to ecclesiastical literature, reflecting the era's tumultuous changes with clarity and depth. John Stoughton was a notable historian and theologian in the 19th century, with a passion for studying the intersections of faith and society. His background in both the Ministry and academia profoundly influenced his holistic approach to church history, leading him to investigate not only the chronology of events but also the ideological shifts shaping ecclesiastical thought. Stoughton's commitment to understanding the relationship between religion and culture is palpably reflected in this work, enriching the historical context he explores. I highly recommend 'Ecclesiastical History of England' to scholars and enthusiasts of religious and cultural history alike. Ecclesiastes An Introduction And Commentary【電子書籍】[ Knut Martin Heim Heim ]
|

The book of Ecclesiastes is probably best known for its repeated refrain that "everything is meaningless," or "vanity." However, a thorough reading demonstrates that this is not its final conclusion.

Knut Heim's Tyndale commentary shows that the book is intellectually sophisticated, theologically rich, emotionally deep - and full of humor. While it is realistic about life, it is life-affirming and immensely practical.

The Tyndale Commentaries are designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text says and what it means. The Introduction to each book gives a concise but thorough treatment of its authorship, date, original setting, and purpose. Following a structural Analysis, the Commentary takes the book section by section, drawing out its main themes, and also comments on individual verses and problems of interpretation. Additional Notes provide fuller discussion of particular difficulties.

In the new Old Testament volumes, the commentary on each section of the text is structured under three headings: Context, Comment, and Meaning. The goal is to explain the true meaning of the Bible and make its message plain.

Building the Whole Church Collaborating Theological Education Practices in the Ecclesial Context of South Asia【電子書籍】[ Jessy Jaison ]
|

As the church grows ever larger in areas once considered impervious to the gospel, theological training is failing to keep up with the needs of local congregations. This lack of missional capacity, alongside an overwhelming shortage of trained leadership, indicates a pressing need to revisit the aims and approaches of theological education globally. Engaging qualitative research from South Asia, Dr. Jessy Jaison demonstrates that both formal and non-formal approaches to theological training can support the church’s missional calling. However, she challenges the growing normalization that theological education is an end in itself, distant from those it was meant to serve. Dr. Jaison calls for a church-centered paradigm in which all forms of training would collaborate with and for the body of Christ. Not only will readers be introduced to theological education in the the South Asian context, they will also benefit from the practical and collaborative model demonstrated and how they can revitalize the process in supporting the church in its mission.

Ecclesial Being Contributions to Theological Dialogue【電子書籍】[ Constantine Scouteris ]
|

In his Ecclesial Being Professor Constantine Scouteris focuses most ably on the mystery of the human person in the context of the conciliarity of the Church. His vision of the unity of the Orthodox churches, based on the Pauline theme of the New Israel, embraces all Orthodox Christian peoples - wonderfully diverse in language and culture - as one nation in Christ, which the entire world is invited to join.

Constantine Scouteris was a spiritual child of St. Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia, the Hut-dweller (1906-1991), and one of Greece's foremost theologians, specializing in ecclesiology, the mystery of the Church as a theanthropic institution, and in Christian anthropology, the nature and purpose of human existence. Scouteris was attuned to the more serious concerns of the day, and always focused on the perennial, ultimate questions of life. He was deeply convinced that communion - personal communion - was the key to world unity and peace. The burning question for him, therefore, was how to enter into real communion with others and attain to true unity.

Professor Scouteris worked tirelessly, for nigh on 40 years, as a responsible and faithful representative of the Orthodox Church in ecumenical dialogue at the highest level, and constantly strove to build bridges by which reconciliation could take place. As he once told me personally, "Communion is the greatest gift that God has bestowed on the human race" - communion with one another, the ability to enter into a personal relationship with one's neighbour.

Born in Athens in 1939, Dr. Scouteris studied at Athens, Strasbourg, and Oxford. He was Professor of the History of Doctrine and Symbolic Theology in the University of Athens, and also taught at the School of Theology at Balamand in Lebanon, and at the Theological Schools of Geneva and Freiburg. He was elected member of the prestigious Acad?mie Internationale des Sciences Religieuses in 2001; and In March and April of 2006, he was sponsored by the Onassis Foundation (USA) to conduct a lecture tour of the United States in the context of its University Seminar Program. A man for all seasons, Dr. Scouteris represented the Orthodox Church in a variety of capacities all over the world: in the Orthodox-Anglican dialogue, in the European Council of Churches (CEC), and in the World Council of Churches (WCC), and was always regarded with respect as a positive force in the quest for unity.

Bernanos An Ecclesial Existence【電子書籍】[ Fr. Hans Urs Von Balthasar ]

|

This book is a double-treat: it combines the genius of the towering theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar and his ability to make his subject come alive before the reader, along with the focus of that genius on someone with the spiritual depth and creative stature of Georges Bernanos, considered by many to be the greatest Catholic creative writer of the twentieth century. The goal of this book is to simply convey what Bernanos wanted to say as the devout Christian that he was. Bernanos was a deeply prayerful, practicing sacramental Catholic whose profound love for the Church made everything he created or wrote an "ecclesial existence that has been given form: existence derived not merely from an abstract, individual faith but from the faith of the Church." With judicious quoting of the primary source and careful juxtaposing of texts and commentary, Balthasar provides a unique forum from which Bernanos can speak to the reader in a way that he can be clearly heard and genuinely understood.

Ecclesiastes and the Search for Meaning【電子書籍】[ Brown, Erica ]
|

Ecclesiastes (in Hebrew, Kohelet) has long been viewed as the great existential work of the Hebrew Bible, containing the famous cry “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” As part of a search for enduring meaning, it questions the nature of work, mortality, happiness, justice, goodness, and life itself. Kohelet is awash in contradictions, careful observations, disappointments, and insights, making it one of the richest and most complex books in all of Tanakh.

This fresh and hopeful look at an ancient book synthesizes rabbinic commentary with modern scholarship, fine art, and poetry. It highlights expressions from Kohelet that have become common parlance while shedding light on its more obscure verses. Ecclesiastes and the Search for Meaning offers a comprehensive introduction to the book and includes three essays on each chapter, concluding with an epilogue on Kohelet’s liturgical use on the holiday of Sukkot ? for Kohelet combines the frustrations and vulnerabilities of life “under the sun” with the temporal joys that make life worthwhile. All are regarded as a “gift from God.”

REVIEWS of LEVIATHAN By Thomas Hobbes

The 100 best nonfiction books: No 94 - Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes (1651)

Thomas Hobbes's essay on the social contract is both a founding text of western thought and a masterpiece of wit and imagination

According to the 17th-century historian and gossip John Aubrey, Thomas Hobbes "was wont to say that if he had read as much as other men, he should have known no more than other men." As a great thinker, Hobbes epitomises English common sense and the amateur spirit, and is all the more appealing for deriving his philosophy from his experience as a scholar and man of letters, a contemporary and occasional associate of Galileo, Descartes and the young Charles Stuart, prince of Wales, before the Restoration.

Hobbes himself was born an Elizabethan, and liked to say that his premature birth in 1588 was caused by his mother's anxiety at the threat of the Spanish Armada:

... it was my mother dear

Did bring forth twins at once, both me, and fear.

Throughout his long life, Hobbes was never far either from the jeopardy of the times (notably the thirty years' war and the English civil war) or the jeopardy sponsored by the brooding realism and pragmatic clarity of his philosophy. What, asked Hobbes, was the form of politics that would provide the security that he and his contemporaries longed for, but were always denied?

frontispeice of leviathan by thomas hobbes

The famous frontispiece to Leviathan. Photograph: Alamy

Subtitled The Matter, Forme and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil, Leviathan first appeared in 1651, during the Cromwell years, with perhaps the most famous title page in the English canon, an engraving of an omnipotent giant, composed of myriad tiny human figures, looming above a pastoral landscape with sword and crosier erect.

Thus "the Leviathan" (sovereign power) entered the English lexicon, and Hobbes's vision of man as not naturally a social being, animated by a respect for community, but a purely selfish creature, motivated by personal advantage, became condensed into his celebrated summary of mankind's existence as "solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short".

It was Hobbes's argument that, to ameliorate these conditions, man should adopt certain "Laws of Nature" by which human society would be forbidden to do "that which is destructive" of life, whereby virtue would be the means of "peaceful, sociable and comfortable living."

The first law of nature is: "every man ought to endeavour peace". This, he argues, will be a hard goal: the general inclination of all mankind is "a perpetual and restless desire of power after power, that ceaseth only in death". The second law of nature is: "a man [must] be willing when others are so too ... to lay down his right to all things; and be contented with so much liberty against other men, as he would allow other men against himself." The third law of nature is: "men performe their Covenants made."

This, in essence, adds up to Hobbes's social contract, enforced by an external power. Accordingly, members of civil society should enter into a contract to confer their power and strength "upon one Man, or upon an Assembly of men ... This done, the Multitude so united in one Person, is called a Common-wealth." For Hobbes, the contracting of such power is the only guarantee of peace and prosperity: "During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is every man against every man."

Bishops, Saints, and Historians Studies in the Ecclesiastical History of Medieval Britain and Italy【電子書籍】[ Robert Brentano ]

Throughout his career, Robert Brentano attempted to understand the nature and 'style' of ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and the British Isles, the specific qualities of saints and the communities that formed around them, and the ways in which seemingly cryptic archival remains of medieval administrative activity, as well as chronicles and lives, could reveal vital details about change and continuity in local and regional religious life and even 'the color of men's souls'. These issues are explored in the essays assembled in Parts I (Bishops) and II (Saints). Part III (Historians) brings together articles that examine the writing of history by both medieval authors and modern historians, and includes Brentano's reflections on his own practice as an historian. The introduction by W. L. North offers a brief biography and introduction to reading Brentano's works, followed by a complete bibliography of his publications.

MC: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job God Gives His People Wisdom【電子書籍】[ Gary Holloway ]
|

In a world bombarded with information, what we long for is knowing how to live well-what the Bible calls wisdom. Meditate on the Wisdom books of the Bible to hear the source of wisdom-the God who made us. In these meditations we will hear the established wisdom passed down from earlier generations. These nuggets of wisdom are found in the book of Proverbs. A proverb is a traditional saying, and as such, proverbs are didactic, optimistic, practical, and conservative. Ecclesiastes contains a different kind of wisdom, built on the wisdom of Proverbs, but which asks what happens when proverbial wisdom fails. Ecclesiastes looks at the mysteries of life. It is reflective, speculative, pessimistic, and creative. It asks the hard questions, like how does life make sense? It explains that often, it doesn't. Plans fail. Fools triumph. We must trust God especially when things don't make sense. That deeper spirituality is put to the test in Job. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." This is a repeated theme in Proverbs. Job experiences a deeper fear of the Lord, one based on trust alone. By meditating on the ordeals of Job, we are brought closer to a God we might not like and do not understand. The only God we have. Meditating on these books will at times be a joy. At other times, meditation will be a challenge. Wisdom does not come easy. But it is a marvelous gift of God.

Patriarch Dioscorus of Alexandria The Last Pharaoh and Ecclesiastical Politics in the Later Roman Empire【電子書籍】[ Volker L. Menze ]
|

Patriarch Dioscorus of Alexandria: The Last Pharaoh of Alexandria and Ecclesiastical Politics in the Later Roman Empire offers a thorough revision of the historical role of Dioscorus as patriarch of Alexandria between 444 and 451 CE. One of the major protagonists of the Christological controversy, Dioscorus was hailed a saint in Eastern Church traditions which opposed the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Yet Western Church traditions remember him as a heretic and violent villain, and much scholarship maintains this image of Dioscorus as 'ruthless and ambitious', a 'tyrant-bishop' feared by his opponents-the 'Attila of the Eastern Church'. This book breaks with these negative stereotypes and offers the first serious historical analysis of Dioscorus as ecclesiastical politician and reformer. It discusses the discrepancy that theologically Dioscorus was a loyal follower of his famous predecessor Cyril of Alexandria (412-444) while politically he was the leading figure of the anti-Cyrillian party in Alexandria. Analysing Dioscorus' role as president of the Second Council of Ephesus in 449 and his downfall and deposition at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, Menze also offers a much-needed new reading of the acts of these two general councils. Reappraising the life and role of Dioscorus ultimately shows how the Christological controversy of the fifth century can only be fully understood against the background of imperial politics-and its mechanisms for implementing 'Orthodoxy'-in the Later Roman Empire.

The Preacher and the Song A Fresh Look at Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs【電子書籍】[ William Varner ]
|

Rarely read and even less rarely preached, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs have been compared to riddles wrapped in enigmas. While included in the trilogy of Solomonic works along with Proverbs, they are often ignored because one seems to be overly pessimistic and the other is almost risqu? in its description of physical love. Sometimes readers wonder why these books are in their Bibles! Employing a key that is found near the back door of each of these neglected books, William Varner attempts to shed light on the purpose and value of these treasures hidden away in a dark corner of the Old Testament. His suggested reading strategy sheds valuable light on their purpose and leads to a very practical message for our lives and for our loves.
