Eerie Silence Race/Racism Explored Across Educational, Theological, and Justice Continuums Amidst America and Beyond【電子書籍】[ Ammar Saheli ]
|

Eerie Silence is a revelatory, jolting exploration into the ramifications of justice inaction in America and beyond and how silence has destructively contributed to issues related to race, racism, education, theology, and racial identity development. The compiled scholarship and research contained within the Eerie Silence project is provoking, risky, confrontational, validating, challenging, feisty, and emotionally and intellectually vulnerable. It is a must read for every person seeking a better grasp of the historically interlocked elements of race, racism, religion, theology, authentic Christianity, and racial identity development, especially as it relates to America and its influence.

Erie Silence is an amazing book! Dr. Saheli has carefully deconstructed not only biblical narratives but also global history like an artist. With every stroke of his brush, he has created a multi-layered and complete work that has direct applications in many fields and disciplines…

ーJennifer Tosch,
Founder, Black Heritage Tours in NY State & Amsterdam,
Netherlands Member, Mapping Slavery Project Netherlands

Well-researched, superbly argued, and profoundly written, Eerie Silence is all at once a history lesson, critical social commentary, autobiographical sketch, sermon, and call to action to end the silence on race/racism. Saheli does a masterful job of intersecting several areas that share the stamp of racism and injustice in common. This is a powerful read for those who are in need for a deep, thoughtful, provocative, intellectual, and empowering learning experience about race in the United States.

ーSharroky Hollie, PhD
Executive Director, Center for Culturally
Responsive Teaching and Learning

This is a wine that will not last long in the wineskins of traditionalism, conservatism, anti-ism, self-righteousness, and isolated fellowship with link minded others, it is a call to ministry to break down the middle wall of racial partition in the church and society in order that generations of women, men, and young people might go unencumbered in their full potential and development.

ーJames L.
Some legends are born from fear. Others from the things we choose not to see.

Beneath the cold waters of Lake Erie, something stirs in the shape of ancient, gentle, and misunderstood. Her name is Bessie, a creature said to guard the balance of the lake itself. To some, she is myth. To others, she is a monster.

When Mason Brooks inherits a strange ring known as the Bloodstone, he discovers that he is one of two guardians bound to protect Bessie’s life. But the other ring-bearer, a man called Black Tom, has darker intentions. He feeds Bessie poisoned gifts, turning her into the monster the world fears.

As bodies begin to surface along the shore, Mason’s loyalty is tested. The town whispers of curses and beasts, while Tom’s power grows unchecked. To save Bessie and the lake that depends on her, Mason must uncover a secret that binds them in blood and betrayal.

If Bessie dies, the lake dies with her. And so does the last trace of innocence in Port Stanley.

A tale of myth, morality, and the fragile harmony between man and nature.

For readers of historical fantasy and spiritual allegory who believe monsters are often made, not born.

Read Bessie: The Monster in Lake Erie and uncover the truth that lives beneath the surface.

The Erie Train Boy【電子書籍】[ Horatio Alger ]
|

Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 ? July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. Alger's name is often invoked incorrectly as though he himself rose from rags to riches, but that arc applied to his characters, not to the author. Essentially, all of Alger's novels are the same: a young boy struggles through hard work to escape poverty. Critics, however, are quick to point out that it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty, which brings him into contact with a wealthy elder gentleman, who takes the boy in as a ward. The boy might return a large sum of money that was lost or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, bringing the boy--and his plight--to the attention of some wealthy individual. It has been suggested that this reflects Alger's own patronizing attitude to the boys he tried to help.
-wikipedia

The Erie Canal Sings A Musical History of New York's Grand Waterway【電子書籍】[ Bill Hullfish ]

Life working along the banks of the Erie Canal is preserved in the songs of America's rich musical history. Thomas Allen's "Low Bridge, Everybody Down" has achieved iconic status in the American songbook, but its true story has never been told until now. Erie songs such as "The E-ri-e Is a-Risin'" would transform into "The C&O Is a-Risin'" as the song culture spread among a network of other canals, including the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Pennsylvania Main Line. As motors replaced mules and railroads emerged, the canal song tradition continued on Broadway stages and in folk music recordings. Author Bill Hullfish takes readers on a musical journey along New York's historic Erie Canal.

The Erie Train Boy【電子書籍】[ Alger ]
|

According to Wikipedia: "Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author whose principal output was formulaic juvenile novels that followed the adventures of bootblacks, newsboys, peddlers, buskers, and other impoverished children in their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of respectable middle-class security and comfort. His novels were hugely popular in their day. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the son of a Unitarian minister, Alger entered Harvard at the age of 16. Following graduation, he briefly worked in education before touring Europe for almost a year. He then entered the Harvard Divinity School, and, in 1864, took a position at a Unitarian church in Brewster, Massachusetts. Two years later, he resigned following a pederastic scandal involving two teenage boys. He subsequently retired from the ministry entirely and moved to New York City where he formed an association with the Newsboys Lodging House and other agencies offering aid to impoverished children. His empathy for the working boys of the city, coupled with the moral values learned at home, were the basis of his many juvenile "[rags to riches]" novels. He died in 1899. The first Alger biography was published in 1928, and later proved to be heavily fictionalized. Other biographies followed, sometimes citing the 1928 hoax as fact. In the last decades of the twentieth century however, a few reliable biographies were published that corrected the errors and fictionalizations of the past. Many of Alger's works have been described as rags to riches stories, illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. This widely held view involves Alger's characters achieving extreme wealth and the subsequent remediation of their "old ghosts." Alger is noted as a significant figure in the history of American cultural and social ideals."

Critical Connections The University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge from the Dawn of the Atomic Age to the Present【電子書籍】[ Lee Riedinger ]
|

The bombing of Pearl Harbor set off a chain of events that included the race to beat German scientists to build the atomic bomb. A tiny hamlet tucked away in the southern Appalachians proved an unlikely linchpin to win the race. The Manhattan Project required the combination of four secret sitesーClinton Laboratories, Y-12, K-25, and S-50ー75,000 workers, and the nation’s finest scientists to create the Secret City, Oak Ridge. From the beginning, the effort was aided by the nearby University of Tennessee, which provided expertise to make the weapon possible. Following World War II, it was not clear what role this huge research and development program would play, but pioneering scientists and administrators were determined that one optionーdismantling the whole thingーwould not happen.

Critical Connections chronicles how Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Y-12 National Security Complex, and their partners became outstanding examples of the military-industrial-educational complex from the Cold War to the present day. At the beginning of the 1950s, Oak Ridge became a flourishing, less-secret city, and the authors show how, decade by decade, ORNL became the source of major breakthroughs in physics, biology, computing, and other fieldsーand how these achievements required ever-closer connections with UT. By the mid-1990s, after many successful joint initiatives between UT and ORNL, UT was poised to compete to become the manager of ORNL. In 2000, UT-Battelle LLC won the bid from the Department of Energy: UT was charged with providing scientific direction and key personnel; its partner Battelle would oversee ORNL’s operations and chart its technology direction.

The authors highlight the scientific developments these connections have brought, from nanotechnology to nuclear fission, from cryogenic experiments on mice to the world’s fastest supercomputer. The partnerships between a university, a city, and federal facilities helped solve some of the greatest challenges of the twentieth centuryーand point toward how to deal with those of the twenty-first.

Port Stanley has a feature that no other town on earth has: its own sea monster. Bessie lives in a cave on the other side of Picnic Hill and calls Lake Erie her home. Hidden from those who would harm her, yet close enough that her two keepers can aid her when she's in danger. Mason Brooks didn't realize that he was one of them until he met the man some would call the devil. Mason had inherited the ring, known as the bloodstone, from his father. He had never been told about the powers it had or about the connection to Bessie.

Tom wears the second ring, called the sky ring. His sudden appearance keeps the people on edge, for there is no record of him before this summer. It soon becomes clear that Tom is mistreating Bessie, giving her meat when she's a vegetarian and injecting her with powerful drugs. There are several deaths out on the lake, which Bessie is being blamed for. But no one can blame her for the murders that take place on Picnic Hill. Mason suspects Tom. Yet Tom knows how to beat the system and is never convicted of any of them. And Mason has to prove one thing...that Black Tom is not his brother.

Two rings need to work in harmony in order to keep Bessie alive. She eats the algae that grow in the lake and helps to balance the ecosystem. Heaven's Ditch God, Gold, and Murder on the Erie Canal【電子書籍】[ Jack Kelly ]
|

A page-turning narrative, Heaven's Ditch offers an excitingly fresh look at a heady, foundational moment in American history.
The technological marvel of its age, the Erie Canal grew out of a sudden fit of inspiration. Proponents didn't just dream; they built a 360-mile waterway entirely by hand and largely through wilderness. As excitement crackled down its length, the canal became the scene of the most striking outburst of imagination in American history. Zealots invented new religions and new modes of living. The Erie Canal made New York the financial capital of America and brought the modern world crashing into the frontier. Men and women saw God face to face, gained and lost fortunes, and reveled in a period of intense spiritual creativity.
Heaven's Ditch by Jack Kelly illuminates the spiritual and political upheavals along this "psychic highway" from its opening in 1825 through 1844. "Wage slave" Sam Patch became America's first celebrity daredevil. William Miller envisioned the apocalypse. Farm boy Joseph Smith gave birth to Mormonism, a new and distinctly American religion. Along the way, the reader encounters America's very first "crime of the century," a treasure hunt, searing acts of violence, a visionary cross-dresser, and a panoply of fanatics, mystics, and hoaxers.

Wedding of the Waters The Erie Canal and the Making of a Great Nation【電子書籍】[ Peter L. Bernstein ]
|

**New York Times Bestseller

The epic account of how one narrow ribbon of water forever changed the course of American history.**

The history of the Erie Canal is a riveting story of American ingenuity. A great project that Thomas Jefferson judged to be “little short of madness,” and that others compared with going to the moon, soon turned into one of the most successful and influential public investments in American history.

In Wedding of the Waters, best-selling author Peter L. Bernstein recounts the canal’s creation within the larger tableau of a youthful America in the first quarter-century of the 1800s. Leaders of the fledgling nation had quickly recognized that the Appalachian mountain range was a formidable obstacle to uniting the Atlantic states with the vast lands of the west. A pathway for commerce as well as travel was critical to the security and expansion of the Revolution’s unprecedented achievement. Gripped by the same fever that had driven explorers such as Hudson and Champlain, a motley assortment of politicians, surveyors, and would-be engineers set out to build a complex structure of a type few of them had ever actually seen, let alone built or operated: a manmade waterway cut through the mountains to traverse the 363 miles between Lake Erie and the Hudson River. By linking the seas to the interior and the interior to the seas, these pioneers ultimately connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River. Bernstein examines the social ramifications, political squabbles, and economic risks and returns of this mammoth project. He goes on to demonstrate how the canal’s creation helped bind the western settlers in the new lands to their fellow Americans in the original colonies, knitted the sinews of the American industrial revolution, and even influenced profound economic change in Europe.

Featuring a rich cast of characters that includes political visionaries like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Martin van Buren; the canal’s most powerful champions, Governor DeWitt Clinton and Gouverneur Morris; and a huge platoon of Irish and American diggers, Wedding of the Waters reveals that the twenty-first-century themes of urbanization, economic growth, and globalization can all be traced to the first great macroengineering venture of American history.

The Battle of Lake Erie and Its Aftermath A Reassessment【

|

Experts weigh in on a pivotal engagement in the War of 1812

Few naval battles in American history have left a more enduring impression on America’s national consciousness than the Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813. Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry’s battle flag emblazoned with the message “Don’t Give Up the Ship,” now enshrined at the U.S. Naval Academy, has become a naval maxim. His succinct after-action reportー“We have met the enemy and they are ours”ーconstitutes one of the more memorable battle summaries in American history.

This splendid collection celebrates the bicentennial of the American victory with a review of the battle and its consequences. The volume is divided into three sections. The first deals with “Military Operations” in the upper Great Lakes, 1812?14, and provides an overview of the War of 1812 in the Old Northwest and western Upper Canada. The second, “Consequences,” assesses the long-term impact of this campaign upon the Native Americans and Euro-Americans who lived in the region and three individuals whose lives were changed by the American recovery of the upper lakes in 1813. The final section, “Memory,” examines two ways the United States keeps the legacy of its first squadron-to-squadron victory alive by maintaining the fragile battle flag that flew on Perry’s flagships and by sailing the replica of US Brig Niagara on the Great Lakes and the East Coast.

Collectively these essays allow the general reader, the military history enthusiast, and the professional historian to take a fresh look at this significant naval engagement and its impact on subsequent historical events.

A Signal Victory The Lake Erie Campaign, 1812-1813【電子書籍】[ David C Skaggs ]
|

The Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 is considered by many to be the most important naval confrontation of the War of 1812. Made famous by the American fleet commander Oliver Hazard Perry's comment, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," the battle marked the U.S. Navy's first successful fleet action and was one of the rare occasions when the Royal Navy surrendered an entire squadron. This book draws on British, Canadian, and American documents to offer a totally impartial analysis of all sides of the struggle to control the lake. New diagrams of the battle are included that reflect the authors' modification of traditional positions of various vessels. The book also evaluates the strategic background and tactical conduct of the British and the Americans and the command leadership exercised by Perry and his British opponent, Commander Robert H. Barclay. Not since James Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book on the subject has the battle been examined in such detail, and not since Alfred Thayer Mahan's 1905 study of the war has there been such a significant reinterpretation of the engagement. First published in hardcover in 1997, the book is the winner of the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award.

Vision and Resilience A Story of Remarkable Growth and Transformation at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College【電子書籍】[ Joseph M. Beilein ]
|

Vision and Resilience recounts the remarkable turnaround of a satellite campus that became one of the brightest spots in the Penn State University system: Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Covering the period from 1980 to 2010, this story serves as a blueprint for administrators who aspire to grow their institutions in challenging times.

Joseph M. Beilein Jr. writes about how, at a time when tensions were high between faculty and the administration, students and the administration, students and the police, and even among the students themselves, The Behrend College saw an unprecedented increase in enrollment, endowments, land acquisition, building, and curricular opportunities. He describes how administrators John Lilley and Jack Burke worked with local leaders, faculty, and other officials to transform The Behrend College into a research institutionーand how they worked with faculty, coaches, and even students to convince young people that Behrend was, in fact, a destination campus. All of these efforts resulted in a college that bucked trends in higher education, demography, and economics to become the leading college in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Fascinating and instructive, Vision and Resilience tells an encouraging story of college success against the odds. It will be of interest to university administrators, faculty, and anyone with a personal connection to the Penn State campus farthest from University Park.

The Erie Canal【電子書籍】[ Ralph K. Andrist ]
|

The Erie Canal was a preposterous idea. Even President Thomas Jefferson, usually ahead of his time, believed that it could not be built for at least a century, and yet, the Erie Canal came to be just as its planners had thought it would. For the first time in the history of the United States, a cheap, fast route ran through the Appalachians, the mountains that had so effectively divided the West from the East of early America. With the canal, the country's fertile interior became accessible and its great inland lakes were linked to all the seas of the world. Here, from award-winning historian Ralph K. Andrist, is the canal's dramatic and little-told story.

The Heroic Age of Diving America's Underwater Pioneers and the Great Wrecks of Lake Erie【電子書籍】[ Jerry Kuntz ]

|

A comprehensive history of the first three decades of underwater exploration in antebellum America.

Winner of the 2016 Dr. Art Bachrach Literary Award presented by the Historical Diving Society

Silver Medalist, 2017 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the Sports/Fitness/Recreation Category

Beginning in 1837, some of the most brilliant engineers of America's Industrial Revolution turned their attention to undersea technology. Inventors developed practical hard-helmet diving suits, as well as new designs of submarines, diving bells, floating cranes, and undersea explosives. These innovations were used to clear shipping lanes, harvest pearls, mine gold, and wage war. All of these underwater technologies were brought together by entrepreneurs, treasure-hunters, and daring divers in the 1850s to salvage three infamous shipwrecks on Lake Erie, each of which had involved the loss of hundreds of lives, as well as the worldly goods of the passengers. The prospect of treasure, combined with the national notoriety of these disasters, soon attracted the attention of local adventurers and the country's leading divers and marine engineers. In The Heroic Age of Diving, Jerry Kuntz shares the fascinating stories of the pioneers of underwater invention and the brave divers who employed the new technologies as they raced with-and against-marine engineers to salvage the tragic wrecks of Lake Erie.
