Ath?na?se Love, Marriage, and Societal Expectations in a 19th Century Creole Society【電子書籍】[ Kate Chopin ]
|

In "Ath√?na√?se," Kate Chopin explores the complexities of marriage, self-identity, and female independence through the poignant narrative of its eponymous protagonist. Set in the late 19th-century American South, the novella is characterized by Chopin's signature naturalism and rich psychological insight, as it delves into the societal constraints impacting women's lives. The story unfolds with Ath√?na√?se, a young woman grappling with her desires and the suffocating realities of her marital life, reflecting the broader themes of personal emancipation and existential questioning that resonate with Chopin's body of work, including her critically acclaimed novel, "The Awakening." Kate Chopin, a pioneer of early feminist literature, faced societal criticism for her unconventional views on women's roles and sexuality. Her own experiences as a married woman and mother, coupled with her exposure to the cultural elite of New Orleans, informed her nuanced portrayals of women's struggles for autonomy. Chopin's literary career, marked by her bold exploration of contentious themes, makes her an enduring figure in American literature. "Ath√?na√?se" is a compelling read for those interested in the intersections of gender, identity, and societal norms in the context of American literary history. It is a must-read for scholars and casual readers alike, offering profound insights into the quest for selfhood in a world unmoved by individual desire.

Becoming Arab Creole Histories and Modern Identity in the Malay World【電子書籍】[ Sumit K. Mandal ]
|

Sumit K. Mandal uncovers the hybridity and transregional connections underlying modern Asian identities. By considering Arabs in the Malay world under European rule, Becoming Arab explores how a long history of inter-Asian interaction was altered by nineteenth-century racial categorisation and control. Mandal traces the transformation of Arabs from familiar and multi-faceted creole personages of Malay courts into alienated figures defined by economic and political function. The racialisation constrained but did not eliminate the fluid character of Arabness. Creole Arabs responded to the constraints by initiating transregional links with the Ottoman Empire and establishing modern social organisations, schools, and a press. Contentions emerged between organisations respectively based on Prophetic descent and egalitarianism, advancing empowering but conflicting representations of a modern Arab and Islamic identity. Mandal unsettles finite understandings of race and identity by demonstrating not only the incremental development of a modern identity, but the contested state of its birth.

"Grace Elizabeth King was born in New Orleans...earned a name for herself in the literary world...her most popular book was 'Creole Families of New Orleans,' published in 1921." -The Times (Shreveport), March 27, 1977

"A fascinating story." -Review of Reviews, 1921

"One of the quaintest and most charming literary figures of the country." -The Bookman, 1921

"Reveals the quality and temper of these early settlers of Louisiana." - The Double Dealer, 1921

"The delightful atmosphere of old New Orleans is well reproduced in these accounts of distinguished Creole families." -Outlook, 1921

"Grace Elizabeth Kings, New Orleans author, died...today...made an international reputation with her pen...was made a fellow of the Royal Society of England." -Montgomery Advertiser, Jan. 13 1932

No American city has a more dramatic history than that of New Orleans. Living successively under French, Spanish and American rule, some of the city's pioneer families have records of unsurpassing interest.

In her 1921 book "Creole Families of New Orleans," Miss Grace King supplied the long needed definitive guide, in English, to a knowledge of the colonial founders of Louisiana.

The purpose of her book is to trace the genealogical records of the earliest families of Louisiana, and in forty chapters, many old family lines of French and Spanish origin are followed in detail. Beside this genealogical matter, the book contains historical and other material showing the social life and customs of the early days in Louisiana

Family spirit, family traditions, the clan spirit at its best, are strongly developed in New Orleans. Hence the history of New Orleans is the history of these old families. So, around the Marignys, the Pontalbas, the Almonasters, the Soniat Du Fossats, the Lafr?ni?res, whose ancestor led the revolt against Spain, around the Celto-French Macartys, the Gayarr?s, who count among their descendants the great historian of Louisiana, Charles Gayarr?, around the Grimas, the Rothgnacs, the Fortiers, revolves the historical cycle, full of romance and poetry, as well as tinged with sorrow, of the Siren City of the South.

About the author:

Grace Elizabeth King (1851 -1932) was a well-known American author of Louisiana stories, history, and biography, and a leader in historical and literary activities. King was born in New Orleans, the third of what became seven children of lawyer William Woodson King and Sarah Ann (n?e Miller) King. The family had an aristocratic background but had been impoverished by the American Civil War. Grace King later studied under Charles Gayarr? and eventually found her career in writing.

In "Bayou Folk," Kate Chopin masterfully explores the rich tapestry of Creole life in the Southern bayous, weaving together a collection of short stories that delve into the intricacies of local culture, relationships, and the natural world. Written in a style that is both lyrical and straightforward, Chopin'??s narratives are imbued with rich descriptions and authentic dialogue that capture the unique essence of the region. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century America, these stories reflect themes of identity, freedom, and the complexities of human emotion within a post-Civil War context, offering a poignant glimpse into a world at the confluence of tradition and modernity. Crime in Creole Countries A Sketch of Criminal Ethnography【電子書籍】[ Stephen M. Marson ]

Originally written by Armand Corre in 1889, Crime in Creole Countries: Sketch of Criminal Ethnography establishes a natural history of crime as it has been observed in countries of old French tradition where racial divides are present and fueled by differences in tendencies, interests, and aptitudes, despite the apparent unitary formula of metropolitan assimilation. This firsthand account of the time in which the French colonies within the West Indies were transitioning from slavery to emancipation was originally intended for magistrates and doctors of the colonies, showing them under what conditions, and under what motives (those being sometimes obscured or concealed) the crimes under their appraisal occurred. Scholars of criminology, race studies, Francophone studies, and history will find this book particularly useful.

In this case, it’s Mommy and BabyGirl.

Some wild horses will never be tamed. And it’s not because they can’t be tamed. It’s because they’re not supposed to be. Within many hearts is a need to keep gypsy thoughts of searching for the happiness believed to be in the future.

When Winnie, a simple Midwest girl, attends college in New Orleans, she enters into a world far less simple than anything she’s ever been exposed to. Within her heart are wild horses that need to be let go and her decision to pursue the future will only be possible when she stops looking over her shoulder at where she’s been.

Early in the semester, she wanders into a college town bar called The Creole Crawl. She meets the bar owner, an early-30s lady named Dominique, and suddenly their worlds collide. Together they share secrets and Dominique shows Winnie how to get to the point where she will be able to let her wild horses go and settle down or to the point where she knows it’s time to keep searching for her happiness elsewhere.

Along the way, they discover a dynamic which fits them both perfectly. But what will Winnie’s decision be and will she be ready to let her wild horses go when the decision must be made?

This is adult material and therefore not intended for minors.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: excellent, , course: Horticuture - Agricultue, language: English, abstract: In order to investigate the effect of plant spacing and harvesting age on growth, biomass and oil yield of rose-scented geranium; a study was carried out at the research field of Wondo Genet Agricultural Research Center in the 2013/14 cropping season. The study was a 4 x 5 factorial combination based on randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The experiment was consisted of four levels of plant spacing (30 x 30, 30 x 40, 30 x 50 and 30 x 60 cm, which result in 111111, 83333, 66666 and 55555 plants/ha, respectively) and five levels of harvesting age (90, 105, 120, 135 and 150 days after transplanting (DAT)). Main effects of plant spacing and harvesting age significantly influenced plant height, number of internodes, internodes length, leaf area and dry leaf weight/plant. While interaction effect of the two factors significantly influenced number of branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, leaf area index, fresh leaf weight/plant, aboveground biomass/ha, fresh leaf yield/ha, dry leaf yield/ha, dry stem yield/ha, harvest index, essential oil content and essential oil yield/ha. The finding revealed that higher number of branches and leaves were recorded at 30 x 60 cm spacing combined with 90 and 135 DAT and higher leaf area, dry leaf weight and fresh leaf weight were recorded at 30 x 60 cm along with 120, 135 and 120 DAT, respectively. At 30 x 30 cm spacing combined with 150, 120 and 150 DAT, highest plant height, leaf area index and number of internodes were obtained; while, the highest aboveground biomass, fresh leaf yield, dry stem yield and dry leaf yield were produced at 30 x 30 cm spacing with 120, 135, 150 and 135 DAT, respectively. Significantly higher essential oil content and harvest index were produced at the treatment combination of 30 x 40 cm spacing when harvested at 90 DAT. On the other hand, the essential oil yield (21.01kg/ha) at 30 x 30 cm plant spacing when harvested at 135 DAT was relatively higher than those of all treatment combinations, which, however it did not statistically different with that of 30 x 30 cm combined with 120 DAT (20.87 kg/ha). In total, it can be recommended to use 30 x 30 cm spacing level with harvesting age of 120 to 135 DAT for essential oil yield production at Wondo Genet area.

How is the English Language reflected in Hawaii Creole English?【電子書籍】[ Wiebke Vieljans ]

|

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of M?nster (Englisches Seminar), course: Seminar Varieties of Standard English around the World, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: 'Pidgins and Creoles are not full or real languages.' Pidgins and Creoles seem to have negative connotations. Like M?hlh?usler argues in his abstract, the history of examining pidgin and creole languages can be seen as a consequence of this view. 'Rather they are broken English/French (the popular view), marginal languages (Reineke), 'Ludersprachen' (prostitute languages - an expression used by Nazi linguists), parasitic systems (Chomsky).'2Nowadays, this opinion M?hlh?usler criticized is nevertheless disproved and antiquated. TheEncyclopaedia Britannicaonce described Pidgin English as 'an unruly bastard jargon, filled with nursery imbecilities, vulgarisms and corruptions'.3But it no longer uses such a definition. Recently, for example scholars recall that pidgins mirror human creative linguistic ability.4 Now this course work should deal with Hawaii Creole English, starting with a short definition of pidgin and creole languages and then turning to some background information about the Hawaiian Islands, which is quite important to understand the context of language developments. Afterwards, Hawaii Creole English5is examined with regard to consonants, vowels, intonation as well as phonology, grammar, semantics and pragmatics. Furthermore, it is compared with Hawaiian, the original language of Hawaii, and Hawaii Pidgin English. As a conclusion, one could summarize the use of studying pidgin and creole language with the help of a few new aspects, and briefly discuss the feature of decreolization in Hawaii, if there is some. The aim of this course work should be to evaluate the sociolinguistic approach of Hawaii with the linguistic facts of HCE, noting also the expansion of the language.

Patois and the Rastafarian use of English Connection between a strong believe and a creole language【電子書籍】[ Johannes Schiefer ]

|

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: English in the Caribbean , language: English, abstract: This paper is going to deal with usage of Creole by Rastafarian especially their own new-created Creole and how it is expressed in songs of Bob Marley. But to understand this usage of Creole we need to have some background information. This is why I have to explain the history, Rastafarian symbolism and sum it up to Dread Talk. But before we come to this short overview about religious backgrounds I try my best to give an outline of Patois and what we call Standard English well knowing, that I cannot give a clear definition. Later on I am going to examine two songs of Bob Marley. But it is important to know about his background and the basics of Rastafarianism what we discussed earlier already. A language is always influenced by someone's background, as where he comes from, his education (or even the education of his parents), where he grew up and what he experienced. This is why we cannot go on without a short overview1 about his life if we want to examine his language in the next subsection. The sections about Rastafarianism and the life and career of Bob Marley are compiled by several authors with many different opinions or information. The first chapter is a mixture of a collation of the existing readings and my own thoughts. Bob Marley's language is mostly examined by myself and the closer examination of his songs is all based on information from class or earlier work in this paper. I want to make sure that I do not want to offend anyone by using terms like black, Rastas or Rastafari. I will talk about people who believe in the Rastafarian believe, not all Jamaicans. This will be mentioned if my work deals about the whole population in Jamaica.

John Von Neumann: The Giga Brain【電子書籍】[ Dr. Leo Lexicon ]
|

He was described as one of the only person smarter than Einstein, by no less than Eugene Wigner, a Nobel-Prize winning physicist, who knew both of them well. He was a polymath who spoke multiple languages and possessed an extraordinary intellect. He could perform complex mathematical calculations in his head, recite entire books verbatim after a single reading, and engage in advanced scientific discussions even as a child. He made groundbreaking contributions to mathematics, physics, economics, and computer science, notably developing the Monte Carlo method for nuclear reactor simulations and pioneering game theory. His unparalleled problem-solving skills would cement his legacy as one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. You may not have heard of him, but much of what you use in our modern information-driven society can be traced back to his mind.

But who exactly was John von Neumann? Was his talent God-given, or acquired through patient learning and determination? What set him apart from other geniuses of his era? Is there anything we can learn from von Neumann to apply to our lives? These are the questions we will explore in this book.
