Economic Evaluation, Cost-Benefit Analysis, Economic Ethics A Review with Regard to Climate Change ? Figures in the Sustainability Discourse【電子書籍】[ Felix Ekardt ]
|

With cost-benefit analysis, economic sciences cultivate a specific decision-making procedure, which has also been partially adopted in politics. Although economists do not experience the approach as normative, on closer examination the approach can be identified as an economic ethics. The present philosophical and at the same time transdisciplinary (with special legal and economic components) treatment examines the persuasive power of this approach using climate change as an example, as the most important sustainability issue. The objections raised against the economisation of decision-making with regard to the utilitarian tradition, such as the criticism of the orientation towards weighing up options, the alleged lack of distributive justice or the tendency to describe people in behavioural science as selfish, are hardly or not at all convincing on closer examination. In several respects, however, it turns out that cost-benefit analysis faces insoluble problems. Firstly, the theoretical basis of (hidden normative) cost-benefit analysis in philosophical empiricism does not seem tenable. This means the idea of empiricism that normative questions must be transformed into questions of factual (countable and reproduceable) preferences of people. Secondly, there are massive collisions of cost-benefit analysis with a liberal-democratic constitutional law, whose principles are universal ethical principles. This concerns both freedom rights (which must not depend on the ability of humans to pay) and the model of democracy and respect for the rule of law. Thirdly, insoluble problems of application arise for cost-benefit analyses, which are particularly (but not only) apparent in the context of climate protection, in general considerations as in the case of legislation as well as in individual analyses, as done when constructing a coal-fired power plant. A strongly deflated cost-benefit analysis could nevertheless contribute factual material ? such as partial aspects of decision consequences that can actually be depicted in monetary terms ? to ethical or legal decision-making processes. In this respect the approach appears helpful and complementary, but not beyond that.

Democracy and Social Ethics Conception of the Moral Significance of Diversity From a Feminist Perspective Including an Essay Belated Industry and a Speech Why Women Should Vote【電子書籍】[ Jane Addams ]
|

It is well to remind ourselves, from time to time, that "Ethics" is but another word for "righteousness," that for which many men and women of every generation have hungered and thirsted, and without which life becomes meaningless. Certain forms of personal righteousness have become to a majority of the community almost automatic. But we all know that each generation has its own test, the contemporaneous and current standard by which alone it can adequately judge of its own moral achievements. To attain individual morality in an age demanding social morality, to pride one's self on the results of personal effort when the time demands social adjustment, is utterly to fail to apprehend the situation. This book is a study of various types and groups who are being impelled by the newer conception of Democracy to an acceptance of social obligations involving in each instance a new line of conduct. Jane Addams (1860-1935), known as the "mother" of social work, was a pioneer American settlement activist, public philosopher, sociologist, protestor, author, and leader in women's suffrage and world peace. In 1931 she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and is recognized as the founder of the social work profession in the United States. A Christian Directory: Christian Ethics, Christian Economics, Christian Ecclesiastics, and Christian Politics【電子書籍】[ Richard Baxter ]

The eternal God having made man an intellectual and free agent, able to understand and choose the good, and refuse the evil; to know, and love, and serve his Maker, and by adhering to him in this life of trial, to attain to the blessed sight and enjoyment of his glory in the life to come, hath not been wanting to furnish him with such necessaries, without which these ends could not successfully be sought. When we had lost our moral capacity of pleasing him, that we might enjoy him, he restoreth us to it by the wonderful work of our redemption. In Christ he hath reconciled the world unto himself; and hath given them a general act of oblivion, contained in the covenant of grace, which nothing but men's obstinate and final unwillingness can deprive them of. To procure their consent to this gracious covenant, he hath "committed" to his ministers the "word of reconciliation;" commanding us "to beseech men, as in the stead of Christ, and as though God himself did beseech them by us, to be reconciled unto God," 2 Cor. v. 18-20; and to show them first their sin and misery, and proclaim and offer the true remedy, and to let them know, that all things are now ready, and by pleading their duty, their necessity, and their commodity, to compel them to come in, Matt. xxii. 4; Luke xi. 17, 23. But so great is the blindness and obstinacy of men, that the greatest part refuse consent; being deceived by the pleasures, and profits, and honours of this present world; and make their pretended necessities or business the matter of their excuses, and the unreasonable reasons of their refusal, negligence, and delays, till death surprise them, and the door is shut; and they knock, and cry for mercy and admittance, when it is too late, Matt. xxv. 10-12. Against this wilful negligence and presumption, which is the principal cause of the damnation of the ungodly world, I have written many books already. But because there are many that profess themselves unfeignedly willing, not only to be saved, but also to be Christ's disciples; to learn of him, to imitate him, and be conformed to him, and to do the will of God, if they could but know it; I have determined, by God's assistance, to write this book for the use of such, and to give them from God's word those plain directions, which are suited to the several duties of their lives, and may guide them safely in their walk with God, to life eternal. Expect not here copious and earnest exhortations, for that work I have done already; and have now to do with such, as say they are made willing, and desire help against their ignorance, that skill and will may concur to their salvation. I shall labour to speak as plainly as I can, because I specially intend it for the ignorant; and yet to be competently exact in the directions, lest such readers lose the benefit by mistakes. And I must speak to many cases, because I speak to families, where all are not in the same condition, and the same persons are not still the same. And therefore if I should not be brief in the particulars, I should be too long in the whole; and tediousness might deprive some readers of the benefit.

The Data of Ethics Empirical Foundations of Moral Principles and Human Conduct【電子書籍】[ Herbert Spencer ]
|

In "The Data of Ethics," Herbert Spencer presents a profound exploration of moral philosophy that intertwines evolutionary concepts with ethics. Written in Spencer'??s characteristic analytical style, the book challenges conventional moral theories by positing that ethical behavior is rooted in the same natural laws that govern physical existence. Embracing a scientific ethos, Spencer systematically examines the interplay between social evolution and moral progress, arguing that ethical conduct arises from both individual and collective needs, ultimately propelling humanity towards greater altruism and cooperation. Herbert Spencer, a prominent Victorian philosopher and sociologist, is well-known for his pioneering ideas on social Darwinism and his emphasis on the evolutionary perspective in understanding human behavior. His extensive work in areas such as sociology and philosophy laid the foundation for modern social science. "The Data of Ethics" reflects Spencer's broader intellectual journey and his quest to reconcile individualism with social responsibility, highlighting the complexities of moral development within an increasingly interconnected society. This essential text is highly recommended for readers interested in the intersection of ethics, sociology, and evolution. Spencer's insights offer a critical lens for understanding contemporary ethical dilemmas and the role of morality in human society, making it a thought-provoking read for both scholars and those seeking to navigate the challenges of modern moral life.

Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century ethical thought, Drake navigates various schools of moral philosophy, highlighting the intersections of psychology, sociology, and philosophy, thereby underscoring the multifaceted nature of ethical conduct. Durant Drake, a prominent figure in ethical discourse, was deeply influenced by both classical and contemporary philosophical traditions. His academic background and experiences as a professor provided him with a unique perspective on the challenges of ethical reasoning in a rapidly evolving society. In crafting this introductory survey, Drake sought to make the abstract realm of ethics accessible, promoting critical thinking about moral issues that resonate with both individual and societal implications. Good Ethics and Bad Choices The Relevance of Behavioral Economics for Medical Ethics【電子書籍】[ Jennifer S. Blumenthal-Barby ]
|

An analysis of how findings in behavioral economics challenge fundamental assumptions of medical ethics, integrating the latest research in both fields.

Bioethicists have long argued for rational persuasion to help patients with medical decisions. But the findings of behavioral economicsーpopularized in Thaler and Sunstein’s Nudge and other booksーshow that arguments depending on rational thinking are unlikely to be successful and even that the idea of purely rational persuasion may be a fiction. In Good Ethics and Bad Choices, Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby examines how behavioral economics challenges some of the most fundamental tenets of medical ethics. She not only integrates the latest research from both fields but also provides examples of how physicians apply concepts of behavioral economics in practice.
Blumenthal-Barby analyzes ethical issues raised by “nudging” patient decision making and argues that the practice can improve patient decisions, prevent harm, and perhaps enhance autonomy. She then offers a more detailed ethical analysis of further questions that arise, including whether nudging amounts to manipulation, to what extent and at what point these techniques should be used, when and how their use would be wrong, and whether transparency about their use is required. She provides a snapshot of nudging “in the weeds,” reporting on practices she observed in clinical settings including psychiatry, pediatric critical care, and oncology. Warning that there is no “single, simple account of the ethics of nudging,” Blumenthal-Barby offers a qualified defense, arguing that a nudge can be justified in part by the extent to which it makes patients better off.

Child Abuse, Family Rights, and the Child Protective System A Critical Analysis from Law, Ethics, and Catholic Social Teaching【
|

The child protective system (CPS), shaped by federal law forty years ago and run on the state and county levels in the United States, offered in utopian fashion the hope of preventing all possible child abuse or neglect. In response, legislators enacted a spate of vague laws that poorly defined such categories as “abuse” and “neglect,” and granted the CPS sweeping powers to intrude into families, often on the basis of nothing more than anonymous complaints about standard childrearing practices. This arrangement, which followed from the questionable assertion of the existence of a crisis of child abuse and neglect, became the basis in theory for the universal monitoring of American families that has resulted in the sharp curtailing of parental rights and responsibilities. With overreaching by local and state governments into family affairs, the current CPS has not only damaged untold numbers of families but also undercut the legitimacy of parental authority through the continuous threat to parents of child removal.

In Child Abuse, Family Rights, and the Child Protective System: A Critical Analysis from Law, Ethics, and Catholic Social Teaching, Stephen M. Krason gathers essays by leading scholars and practitioners to comment through the prism of Catholic social thought, on the plight afflicting American families and the role of the child protective system. Here readers will find critical essays on the deleterious effect of the1974 passage of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act; assessments of current American policies on child abuse and neglect and the role of the CPS within the context of prevailing international human rights principles and Catholic social teaching; a survey of the enforcement of CPS policies from a legal and constitutional perspective; research data disputing the CPS principle that all parents are potential abusers and illustrating the greater prevalence of abuse and neglect in broken, “blended,” and “untraditional” families; and arguments for poverty and unemployment as the prime culprits in the mistreatment of children. Also included are the amicus curiae briefs that the Society of Catholic Social Scientists submitted in two U.S. Supreme Court cases on parental rights, the CPS, and state control over the family.

Child Abuse, Family Rights, and the Child Protective System should appeal to a variety of professionals as well as scholars, from family court attorneys, social workers, family counselors, and clergy to researchers in the fields of social work, law, family studies, American politics, sociology, human services, counseling and psychology, and education, as well as public officials.

Every aspect of our life has a part to play in the greater ecological system, Michael Stone explains in this book. How do we bring this large view to our yoga practice? According to Stone, our responsibility as human beings is to live in a sustainable and respectful way. He says two things need to change. First, we need to understand the relationship between our actions and the effects of our actions. Second, once we see the effect of our actions in the human and non-human world, we need practical skills for learning how to make changes.

Using the five principles (yama) described in the Yoga-Sutra attributed to Patanjali, Michael Stone offers a basis for rethinking ethical action and the spiritual path.

The main argument for changing the treatment design from being evidence-based to one based on ethics, is the hypothesis that good health care is based on treatment which makes the situation positive and meaningful for the patient. Lay Sermons, Addresses and Reviews Exploring Science, Religion, and Ethics in the Victorian Era【電子書籍】[ Thomas Henry Huxley ]

In "Lay Sermons, Addresses and Reviews," Thomas Henry Huxley explores the intersections of science, philosophy, and ethics in a series of thought-provoking essays aimed at a lay audience. Huxley's eloquent prose marries scientific rigor with accessible language, enabling readers to confront complex topics such as evolution, education, and the morality of scientific inquiry. The work emerges from the intellectual fervor of the late Victorian era, a time when societal values were being scrutinized under the lens of scientific advancement and rational thought. Huxley'??s keen observations challenge dogmatic beliefs, positioning him as a pivotal figure in the promotion of secular humanism and empiricism. Huxley, often referred to as '??Darwin's Bulldog'?? for his vigorous defense of Charles Darwin's theories, was profoundly influenced by the intellectual upheaval of his time. Coming from a humble background and facing numerous challenges in his early education, Huxley emerged as a prominent biologist and philosopher. His commitment to science was paralleled by a fervent desire to educate the public about the implications of scientific discoveries for moral and ethical living, which resonates throughout this collection. This compilation is essential for anyone seeking to understand the evolution of modern thought, particularly in science and ethics. Huxley'??s engaging arguments not only illuminate the scientific landscape of the 19th century but also provoke critical reflection on contemporary issues, making it a compelling read for scholars and general readers alike.

In "The Methods of Ethics," Henry Sidgwick presents a rigorous exploration of ethical theory that investigates the relationships between utilitarianism, egoism, and virtue ethics. Written in a clear and methodical style, Sidgwick employs logical reasoning and philosophical rigor to critically analyze moral principles and their implications for individual actions. This seminal work, first published in 1874, situates itself within the emerging discourse of modern ethics, engaging with the ideas of contemporaries such as John Stuart Mill while also anticipating later developments in moral philosophy. Henry Sidgwick was a prominent philosopher and a key figure in the development of utilitarian thought. His academic background in classics, mathematics, and philosophy culminated in a profound commitment to ethical clarity and practical application. Sidgwick's personal experiences as a moral commentator on the challenges of Victorian society also influenced his nuanced approach to ethics, seeking to reconcile personal duty with broader social considerations. For readers seeking a deeper understanding of moral philosophy, "The Methods of Ethics" is an essential text that not only challenges conventional beliefs but also invites contemplation on ethical dilemmas relevant to contemporary society. Ethics: The Universal Need for Ethics: Business Is the Perfect Catalyst (The Power of Ethics)【電子書籍】[ Pete Geissler ]
|

Ethics - described briefly as the norms by which acceptable and unacceptable behaviors are measured - has been the concern, and perhaps the great dilemma, of sentient humans since Socrates subjected it to philosophical inquiry almost 2,500 years ago. Socrates believed, without universal acceptance, that the most pertinent issues people must deal with are related to how we live our lives, what actions are and are not righteous, and how people should live together peacefully and harmoniously. A vast parade of philosophers, religious leaders, politicians, professors, and self-help gurus have followed Socrates' lead through the ensuing centuries; it's a popular and enduring subject, perhaps because it is so complex, intriguing, and pervasive in every facet of our lives.

Today, in 2015, ethics dominates our news in the form of antiethics. The headlines in newspapers and the lead stories on TV, radio, and Internet news are typically about such abhorrent behavior as lying, stealing, revenge, convictions for corruption, gratuitous murder, and misuse of public or other people's funds for personal gain. Readers, viewers, and listeners can hardly be faulted for thinking that we live in a corrupt society - exactly what Socrates and others did not want or envision. Perhaps the antiethical stance of the media is the most antiethical part of our society.

Nevertheless, the battle for a more ethical society rages unchecked and unabated; one needs only to examine the dozens of books with "ethics" in their titles on sale at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, including this one and those that are listed in Appendix G. I daresay that the authors, including the two who created this audiobook, hope that their words and thoughts will help move us toward a more civil society.

The World English Bible (WEB): Philemon offers a modern translation of one of the New Testament'??s most intimate letters, emphasizing the themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and social justice. Written in accessible English, the WEB translation seeks to bridge the historical context with contemporary understanding, elucidating scholarly interpretations without losing the essence of the original Greek text. The accompanying textual notes provide invaluable insights into the cultural and theological significance of Philemon'??s message, revealing the complexities of master-servant relationships in the early Christian era and its implications on modern ethical considerations. The author of this translation remains anonymous, which invites readers to focus solely on the text itself rather than the identity of the translator. This approach reflects a longstanding tradition in biblical scholarship, often prioritizing the communicated message over the messenger. The WEB project, rooted in a commitment to making the scriptures accessible to all, stems from a rich heritage of biblical translations that aim to democratize religious texts, allowing for wider engagement and interpretation. I highly recommend The World English Bible: Philemon to anyone seeking a fresh perspective on biblical texts. This translation not only enhances one'??s understanding of the dynamics of early Christian communities but also provides a profound commentary on the enduring issues of forgiveness and social equity. Ideal for both scholarly study and personal reflection, this work stands as a resource for thoughtful dialogue and spiritual growth.

The book navigates the prevailing social attitudes towards death and dissection in the early 19th century, offering insights into the tension between scientific inquiry and moral consideration. Smith's literary style reflects the didactic traditions of the period, balancing scientific rigor with persuasive rhetoric, ultimately advocating for a progressive approach to medical education and practice. Southwood Smith (1792-1866), a prominent physician and public health advocate, was instrumental in shaping the discourse surrounding medical ethics and anatomical research during a time when such topics were often met with societal resistance. His background in medicine and his engagement with contemporary debates allowed him to articulate the need for reform. Smith's influences included debates about public health and growing awareness of the importance of anatomical study, which fueled his commitment to promoting anatomical research as a vital tool for medical progress. "Use of the Dead to the Living" is essential reading for those interested in the history of medical ethics, anatomy, and Victorian literature. It offers a thought-provoking perspective on how society can reconcile the sometimes uncomfortable relationship between life, death, and the pursuit of knowledge. Readers will find Smith's insights remarkably relevant today as discussions around medical ethics continue to evolve.

The Ethics of Space Exploration【
|

This book aims to contribute significantly to the understanding of issues of value (including the ultimate value of space-related activities) which repeatedly emerge in interdisciplinary discussions on space and society. Although a recurring feature of discussions about space in the humanities, the treatment of value questions has tended to be patchy, of uneven quality and even, on occasion, idiosyncratic rather than drawing upon a close familiarity with state-of-the-art ethical theory. One of the volume's aims is to promote a more robust and theoretically informed approach to the ethical dimension of discussions on space and society. While the contributions are written in a manner which is accessible across disciplines, the book still withstands scrutiny by those whose work is primarily on ethics. At the same time it allows academics across a range of disciplines an insight into current approaches toward how the work of ethics gets done. The issues of value raised could be used toinform debates about regulation, space law and protocols for microbial discovery as well as longer-range policy debates about funding.

Moral Philosophy: Ethics, Deontology and Natural Law【電子書籍】[ Joseph Rickaby ]
|

In "Moral Philosophy: Ethics, Deontology and Natural Law," Joseph Rickaby presents a comprehensive examination of the fundamental principles of moral philosophy, weaving intricate discussions on ethics, the intricacies of deontological ethics, and the natural law tradition. His prose elegantly balances accessibility with scholarly rigor, making complex philosophical themes relatable. Set against the backdrop of the late 19th-century intellectual discourse, Rickaby draws upon the works of prominent figures such as Aquinas and Kant to explore the intersections of moral duty and human agency, offering readers a rich tapestry of ideas that resonate with contemporary ethical dilemmas. Joseph Rickaby, a Jesuit priest and philosopher, was profoundly influenced by both his religious background and the pressing moral questions of his time. His academic work was characterized by a synthesis of faith and reason, which shaped his approach to moral philosophy. This context, combined with his role as a lecturer at various institutions, enabled him to engage deeply with the philosophical challenges of his era, ultimately leading to the creation of this essential text that reflects both a personal and a universal quest for understanding human morality. I highly recommend "Moral Philosophy: Ethics, Deontology and Natural Law" to scholars and students of philosophy alike, as well as anyone interested in the moral frameworks that govern human behavior. Rickaby's insights encourage readers to reflect on their ethical beliefs and the philosophical principles that underlie them, making this book an indispensable resource for those seeking to navigate the complex moral landscape of the modern world.

|

A guide to the ethical questions that arise from our use of industrial robots, robot companions, self-driving cars, and other robotic devices.

Does a robot have moral agency? Can it be held responsible for its actions? Do humans owe robots anything? Will robots take our jobs? These are some of the ethical and moral quandaries that we should address now, as robots and other intelligent devices become more widely used and more technically sophisticated. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, philosopher Mark Coeckelbergh does just that. He considers a variety of robotics technologies and applicationsーfrom robotic companions to military dronesーand identifies the ethical implications of their use. Questions of robot ethics, he argues, are not just about robots but, crucially and importantly, are about humans as well.

Coeckelbergh examines industrial robots and their potential to take over tasks from humans; “social” robots and possible risks to privacy; and robots in health care and their effect on quality of care. He considers whether a machine can be moral, or have morality built in; how we ascribe moral status; and if machines should be allowed to make decisions about life and death. When we discuss robot ethics from a philosophical angle, Coeckelbergh argues, robots can function as mirrors for reflecting on the human. Robot ethics is more than applied ethics; it is a way of doing philosophy.
