In "The Forest Exiles: The Perils of a Peruvian Family in the Wilds of the Amazon," Mayne Reid crafts a vivid adventure narrative that immerses readers into the lush and perilous world of the Amazon rainforest. Blending elements of gothic romanticism with thrilling escapades, Reid's literary style employs rich descriptions and an engaging, episodic structure that captures the essence of survival against overwhelming odds. Set in the mid-19th century, the novel reflects the era's fascination with exploration and the exotic, echoing themes of colonialism, nature's majesty, and primal human instincts in face of adversity. Mayne Reid, a Scottish author and adventurer, drew upon his own experiences traveling through South America and his passion for natural history and exploration. Reid's works often portray characters confronting the challenges of wilderness environments, revealing both the dangers and beauties of nature. His dedication to authenticity is evident as he combines adventure with ethical reflections, reflecting a nuanced understanding of indigenous cultures and the imposition of Western values during his time. For those captivated by tales of bravery, resilience, and the untamed spirit of exploration, "The Forest Exiles" offers a captivating journey. Reid's ability to evoke the majesty and threats of the Amazon makes this novel essential reading for adventure enthusiasts and scholars interested in 19th-century literature and colonial narratives.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 ? 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he perfected. Other major works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Margaret Cavendish and the Exiles of the Mind【電子書籍】[ Anna Battigelli ]

Margaret Cavendish, duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673), led a dramatic life that brought her into contact with kings, queens, and the leading thinkers of her day. The English civil wars forced her into exile, accompanying Queen Henrietta Maria and her court to Paris. From this vantage point, she began writing voluminously, responding to the events and major intellectual movements of the mid-seventeenth century.

Cavendish published twenty-three volumes in her lifetime, including plays, romances, poetry, letters, biography, and natural philosophy. In them she explored the political, scientific, and philosophical ideas of her day. While previous biographers of Cavendish have focused almost exclusively on her eccentric public behavior, Anna Battigelli is the first to explore in depth her intellectual life. She dismisses the myth of Cavendish as an isolated and lonely thinker, arguing that the role of exile was a rhetorical stance, one that allowed Cavendish to address and even criticize her world. She, like others writing during the period after the English civil wars, focused squarely on the problem of finding the proper relationship between mind and world. This volume presents Cavendish's writing self, the self she treasured above all others.

Exile, a global and protean phenomenon, touched about half million Spanish Republican refugees at the end of the 1936-39 War in Spain. Contrary to Mexico's significant sheltering, the USA mainly admitted a select group of intellectuals: notably, Zenobia Camprub? and her partner, the 1956 Nobel Prize for Literature recipient, Juan Ram?n Jim?nez, University of Maryland (1943-1951), Pedro Salinas (Johns Hopkins Univ.), or women like Carmen Aldecoa, or Carmen de Zulueta, who kept alive the progressive gender and education claims from the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939) at other schools and universities. Nevertheless, widely supported relief organizations and leftist publications channeled aid for the exiles, and rose antifascist awareness for US intellectuals such as Noam Chomsky. Contributions herein this volume, generated eighty years later at the University of Maryland during an international symposium (2019), throughout a continuing academic interest for this diaspora, will illuminate readers on the depth of Spanish exile studies in the Americas, and some lasting contributions from this significant group of witnesses.

A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN (Awakening of Stephen Dedalus) An Autobiographical Novel from the Author of Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, Dubliners, Stephen Hero, Chamber Music & Exiles【電子書籍】[ James Joyce ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN (Awakening of Stephen Dedalus)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the first novel of Irish writer James Joyce. An artist's novel in a modernist style traces the religious and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter ego of Joyce and an allusion to Daedalus, the consummate craftsman of Greek mythology. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe. The work uses techniques that Joyce developed more fully in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. A Portrait began life in 1903 as Stephen Heroーa projected autobiographical novel in a realistic style. After 25 chapters, Joyce abandoned Stephen Hero in 1907 and set to reworking its themes and protagonist into a condensed five-chapter novel, dispensing with strict realism and making extensive use of free indirect speech that allows the reader to peer into Stephen's developing consciousness. James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses, a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he utilized.

Slavery's Exiles The Story of the American Maroons【電子書籍】[ Sylviane A Diouf ]

Sylviane A. Diouf’s Slavery’s Exiles reveals the forgotten stories of America maroonsーwilderness settlers evading discovery after escaping slavery.

Over more than two centuries men, women, and children escaped from slavery to make the Southern wilderness their home. They hid in the mountains of Virginia and the low swamps of South Carolina; they stayed in the neighborhood or paddled their way to secluded places; they buried themselves underground or built comfortable settlements. Known as maroons, they lived on their own or set up communities in swamps or other areas where they were not likely to be discovered.

Although well-known, feared, celebrated or demonized at the time, the maroons whose stories are the subject of this book have been forgotten, overlooked by academic research that has focused on the Caribbean and Latin America. Who the American maroons were, what led them to choose this way of life over alternatives, what forms of marronage they created, what their individual and collective lives were like, how they organized themselves to survive, and how their particular story fits into the larger narrative of slave resistance are questions that this book seeks to answer. To survive, the American maroons reinvented themselves, defied slave society, enforced their own definition of freedom and dared create their own alternative to what the country had delineated as being black men and women’s proper place. Audacious, self-confident, autonomous, sometimes self-sufficient, always self-governing; their very existence was a repudiation of the basic tenets of slavery.

“Impressive research and vivid prose. . . . An important addition to our understanding of slave society and black resistance.” ーPulitzer Prize-winning author Eric Foner

Mother of Exiles: Interviews of Asylum Seekers at the Good Neighbor Settlement House, Brownsville, Texas by James Pace brings a human face to the borderlands crisis. Through eighty-five poignant interviews of asylum seekers from Bangladesh, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, Pace provides unvarnished testimony of the sojourners' flight to the South Texas border (2018 - 2019); their detention by US Customs and Border Protection, and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement; and conditional release.

Through the interviews, Pace records the humanitarian aid proffered by Team Brownsville; and the interfaith Good Neighbor Settlement House's galvanizing Refugee Respite Program, created by then volunteer director, Jack M. White Jr., MSW, whose small staff and a cadre of volunteers source food, clothing, transportation; and provide access to phones, restrooms, showers, and beds for hundreds a day released to the city's bus station, in transit to the next destination.

In her riveting introduction, historian Sarah Towle sets the stage for the political, social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to the desperate migration of people to the borderlands, and how one small historic border town has risen up to meet the unremitting humanitarian crisis, through strength, intelligence, faith, and love.

Bonapartists in the Borderlands French Exiles and Refugees on the Gulf Coast, 1815-1835【電子書籍】[ Rafe Blaufarb ]

Provides an important revision of the causes of the failure of France's Vine and Olive Colony in Alabama, placing it within the context of America's westward expansion

Bonapartists in the Borderlands debunks the standard account of the Vine and Olive Colony, which stresses the failure of aristocratic, luxury-loving French to tame the wilderness. Rafe Blaufarb recounts how Napoleonic exiles and French refugees from Europe and the Caribbean joined forces with Latin American insurgents, Gulf pirates, and international adventurers to seek their fortune in the Gulf borderlands. The US Congress welcomed the French and granted them a capacious tract of rich Black Belt land near Demopolis, Alabama, on the condition that they would establish a Mediterranean-style Vine and Olive colony.

Blaufard shows that it was not a lack of grit that caused the enterprise to fail. Rather, the Napoleonic officers involved in the colony sold their land shares to speculators to finance an even more perilous adventureーinvading the Texas borderlands contested by Spain and the US. Their departure left the Vine and Olive colony in the hands of French refugees from the Haitian slave revolt. They soon abandoned vine cultivation and fused with the neighboring communities of Anglo-American slaveholding cotton planters and speculators.

Rafe Blaufarb examines the underlying motivations and aims that inspired this endeavor and details the nitty-gritty politics, economics, and backroom bargaining that resulted in the settlement. He employs a wide variety of local, national, and international resources: from documents held by the Alabama State Archives, Marengo County court records, and French-language newspapers published in America to material from the War Ministry Archives at Vincennes, the Diplomatic Archives at the Quai d’Orasy, and the French National Archives.

Elisabeth de Waal's mesmerizing The Exiles Return is a stunningly vivid postwar story of Austria's fallen aristocrats, unrepentant Nazis, and a culture degraded by violence.
The novel follows a number of exiles, each returning under very different circumstances, who must come to terms with a city in painful recovery. There is Kuno Adler, a Jewish research scientist, who is tired of his unfulfilling existence in America; Theophil Kanakis, a wealthy Greek businessman, seeking to plunder some of the spoils of war; Marie-Theres, a brooding teenager, sent by her parents in hopes that the change of scene will shake her out of her funk; and Prince "Bimbo" Grein, a handsome young man with a title divested of all its social currency.
With immaculate precision and sensitivity, de Waal, an exile herself, captures a city rebuilding and relearning its identity, and the people who have to do the same. Mesmerizing and tragic, de Waal has written a masterpiece of European literature, an artifact revealing a moment in our history, clear as a snapshot, but timeless as well.

Exiles in Sepharad The Jewish Millennium in Spain【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey Gorsky ]

The dramatic one-thousand-year history of Jews in Spain comes to life in Exiles in Sepharad. Jeffrey Gorsky vividly relates this colorful period of Jewish history, from the era when Jewish culture was at its height in Muslim Spain to the horrors of the Inquisition and the Expulsion.

Twenty percent of Jews today are descended from Sephardic Jews, who created significant works in religion, literature, science, and philosophy. They flourished under both Muslim and Christian rule, enjoying prosperity and power unsurpassed in Europe. Their cultural contributions include important poets; the great Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides; and Moses de Leon, author of the Zohar, the core text of the Kabbalah.

But these Jews also endured considerable hardship. Fundamentalist Islamic tribes drove them from Muslim to Christian Spain. In 1391 thousands were killed and more than a third were forced to convert by anti-Jewish rioters. A century later the Spanish Inquisition began, accusing thousands of these converts of heresy. By the end of the fifteenth century Jews had been expelled from Spain and forcibly converted in Portugal and Navarre. After almost a millennium of harmonious existence, what had been the most populous and prosperous Jewish community in Europe ceased to exist on the Iberian Peninsula.

The Exiles and Other Stories【電子書籍】[ Horacio Quiroga ]

Tales of risk and danger, suffering, disease, horror, and death. Tales, also, of courage and dignity, hard work, and human endurance in the face of hostile nature and the frequent brutality of men. And tales flavored with piquant touches of humor and bemused irony. These are the stories of the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, here presented in an important compilation of thirteen of his most compelling tales, sensitively selected and translated by J. David Danielson. Author of some two hundred pieces of fiction, often compared to the works of Kipling, Jack London, and Edgar Allan Poe, Quiroga set many of his stories in the territory of Misiones in northeastern Argentina, the subtropical jungle region where he spent much of his life. Included here are stories from Los desterrados (1926) often said to be his best book, as well as others from Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte (1917), Anaconda (1921), and El Desierto (1924). The publication of this selection marks the first appearance in English of all but two of the thirteen stories. Quiroga here presents a wide range of characters: parents and children, servant girls and prostitutes, landowners and lumber barons, foremen and laborers, natives and immigrants, in stories pervaded by a vision of life that is elemental, incisive, and essentially tragic. The Exiles and Other Stories shows the versatility and skill that have made him a classic Spanish American writer. It complements and illumines The Decapitated Chicken and Other Stories, selected and translated by Margaret Sayers Peden, also published by the University of Texas Press.
