In ＜em＞Technology of the Oppressed,＜/em＞ David Nemer draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork to provide a rich account of how favela residents engage with technology in community technology centers and in their everyday lives. Their stories reveal the structural violence of the information age. But they also show how those oppressed by technology don’t just reject it, but consciously resist and appropriate it, and how their experiences with digital technologies enable them to navigate both digital and nondigital sources of oppressionーand even, at times, to flourish.＜/p＞＜p＞Nemer uses a decolonial and intersectional framework called Mundane Technology as an analytical tool to understand how digital technologies can simultaneously be sites of oppression and tools in the fight for freedom. Building on the work of the Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, he shows how the favela residents appropriate everyday technologiesーtechnological artifacts (cell phones, Facebook), operations (repair), and spaces (Telecenters and Lan Houses)ーand use them to alleviate the oppression in their everyday lives. He also addresses the relationship of misinformation to radicalization and the rise of the new far right. Contrary to the simplistic techno-optimistic belief that technology will save the poor, even with access to technology these marginalized people face numerous sources of oppression, including technological biases, racism, classism, sexism, and censorship. At a deeper level, though, he interprets it as a story of a communally oriented Afro-Atlantic worldview versus the dehumanizing colonialist and imperialist one. Brazilian gangster funk is an expression of the utopian edge of Rio’s urban youth culture pointing towards an improbable, yet powerful sense of hope for greater coexistence, not only for young people in Rio’s favelas but for all of us anywhere.＜/p＞＜p＞Brazilian funk has its origins in the dance parties of the young, mostly Black and racially mixed poor inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s, set to the sounds of African American soul and funk. The music of these bailes funk evolved along with the advent of electronic music and hip hopーprimarily through the influence of styles like electro funk, freestyle dance and Miami bass and groups and artists like 2 Live Crew, Grandmaster Flash, Stevie B and DJ Battery Brain. Due to the mass gang fighting at many dance halls across the city’s low-income suburbs in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the bailes funk relocated to Rio’s informal, low-income favela communities. There, funk carioca underwent a crucial shift as local MCs and DJs began performing in Portuguese to address the daily lives of Rio’s poor youths. Von da an wurden alle Siedlungen favela genannt, die auf unbenutzten Grundst?cken nahe bei den St?dten erbaut wurden und die den Ansiedlern nicht geh?rten. Mit der Zeit wuchsen die Elendsbehausungen bis zu 1.000 pro Jahr. 1940 wurden 65.317 solcher Behausungen gez?hlt, 1949 waren es bereits 89.635 (vgl. F?chtner 1991: S. 127f). Bis in die 1920er Jahre hinein waren die Favelas von geringer Bedeutung, erst danach entwickelten sie sich rasch. Grund daf?r war die Ver?nderung des Binnenmarktes. Die Industrialisierung begann sich in den St?dten auszubreiten und die Wirtschaft wuchs, sodass in den St?dten viele staatlich gef?rderte Arbeitspl?tze entstanden. Dem zufolge wanderten viele Menschen vom Land in die Stadt, weil sie dort auf ein besseres Leben hofften (vgl. F?chtner 1991: 23). Solche Menschen werden auch als peasants in the city bezeichnet, da sie ihre Lebensgewohnheiten vom Land weiterhin in der Stadt betreiben (vgl. Happe 2002: 141). Um 1940 lebten noch 68,8% der Bev?lkerung Brasiliens auf dem Land.
