Qui, giovanissimo, entra nella Federazione giovanile del partito socialista, dove ha inizio la sua attivit? politica. In contrasto con l’atteggiamento del PSI verso la guerra, aderisce al movimento anarchico uscendo dalla F.G.S.I. dopo il luglio 1916. Nello stesso anno si trasferisce con la madre ad Arezzo e l’anno successivo, il 4 gennaio 1917, si sposa civilmente a Gualtieri con Giovanna Caleffi, una ragazza che era stata allieva di sua madre alla Scuola Normale (magistrale) di Reggio Emilia. Sono entrambi minorenni e vivono ad Arezzo, dove la mamma di lui insegna. Tre mesi dopo il matrimonio, Camillo viene chiamato alle armi, nonostante fosse stato fatto rivedibile perch? convalescente da una gravissima malattia. Dopo qualche mese trascorso all’Accademia di Modena, ? inviato al confino a Pianosa per insubordinazione ed in seguito rimandato a casa. Congedato nel 1919, comincia a collaborare assiduamente alla stampa anarchica, partecipando poi alla costituzione dell’Unione anarchica italiana. Nel 1922 si laurea in filosofia a Firenze con Gaetano Salvemini, divenendo uno degli assidui del circolo culturale fondato da Carlo Rosselli ed Ernesto Rossi. Sar? vicino a “Italia libera” e collaborer? con il “Non mollare!”, con “Conscientia” e con numerose altre riviste. Nel 1926, con la promulgazione da parte del fascismo delle leggi eccezionali, ? costretto ad espatriare in Francia. A Parigi deve arrangiarsi nei lavori pi? disparati. Cionondimeno, proprio nella capitale transalpina inizia la frequentazione dei compagni anarchici per riorganizzare le fila del movimento e collabora con la stampa libertaria, dedicandosi anche all’elaborazione dei suoi studi. Coinvolto da agenti provocatori fascisti (in particolare: E. Menapace) in una serie di denunce e di complotti, nel 1928 viene espulso dalla Francia, dove per? rientra poco tempo dopo. Nel dicembre dell’anno successivo ? arrestato in Belgio nell’ambito di un’operazione poliziesca che culmina con l’arresto a Parigi di altri fuoriusciti italiani tra cui Carlo Rosselli. Comincia a peregrinare tra Francia, Belgio, Olanda, Lussemburgo e Germania, costantemente controllato dalla polizia e pi? volte incarcerato ed espulso dalle autorit?. Nel 1936, allo scoppio della guerra civile in Spagna, ? tra gli organizzatori del primo contingente italiano in quel Paese. Nel fuoco dello sforzo bellico Berneri appoggia concretamente le forze repubblicane e libertarie che si battono contro i “franchisti”, non mancando di partecipare anche alla battaglia di Monte Pelato. Nei mesi successivi, Camillo ? soprattutto impegnato con il giornale “Guerra di Classe”, dalle cui pagine sostiene il suo personale dissenso sui problemi della militarizzazione (anarchici “ministeriali” e gruppi estremisti dell’anarchismo catalano) e sul silenzio della stampa anarchica di fronte ai crimini stalinisti. La sua critica si appunta soprattutto verso quelle forze che, all’interno del campo repubblicano e “democratico”, perseguono obiettivi “particolari” o ritenuti comunque pericolosi. In breve gli eventi precipitano, culminando con i fatti del tragico maggio barcellonese, dove Camillo viene ucciso insieme al compagno di lotta Francesco Barbieri, il 5 maggio 1937, dagli agenti della ceka, un commando composto da comunisti italiani e spagnoli.＜/p＞ ＜p＞La condanna＜/p＞ ＜p＞≪... Verso le 6 del pomeriggio un gruppo di "mozos de escuadra" e di "bracciali rossi" del PSUC irrompe nel porton numero 3. Li comanda un poliziotto in borghese; in tutto, saranno una dozzina. Salgono gli scalini di marmo che portano al primo piano e bussano alla porta di Berneri. Ad aprire ? Francisco Barbieri, 42 anni, anarchico di origine calabrese. Nell'appartamento, oltre Berneri, c'? la compagna di Barbieri e una miliziana. - Il poliziotto in borghese intima ai due anarchici di seguirlo. - E per quale motivo? - Vi arrestiamo come controrivoluzionari. - Barbieri ? paonazzo. - In vent'anni di milizia anarchica - dice - ? la prima volta che mi viene rivolto questo insulto. - Appunto in quanto anarchici, siete controrivoluzionari. - Il suo nome fa Barbieri irritato - Gliene chieder? conto presto. - Il poliziotto rovescia il bavero della giacca e mostra una targhetta metallica con il numero 1109. - I due anarchici vengono portati via, mentre la compagna di Barbieri chiede invano di poterli seguire. - Ma il viaggio ? breve, di quelli che non ammettono testimoni.
