Psychopath The Case of Patrick MacKay【電子書籍】[ Tim Clark ]

First published in 1976, Psychopath is a study of Patrick Mackay who, in 1974 ? with a string of muggings and killings behind him ? was on trial for murder and was imprisoned in November 1975. John Penycate and Tim Clark ? responsible for the controversial BBC Panorama programme on Patrick Mackay’s case ? here take their investigation further and raise the important question of how the various responsible agencies which came into contact with him failed to see the danger and prevent these needless killings. Mackay passed through five mental institutions as well as approved schools, remand centres and homes. Twice he had been released from Moss Side Special Hospital ? the North of England’s equivalent to Broadmoor ? against the advice of his doctors. Penycate and Clark show that the signs were there for all to see. They give a detailed account of Patrick Mackay’s deterioration, from his turbulent childhood, through numerous suicide attempts, acts of violence and spells in mental and penal institutions, to his becoming London’s most notorious ‘mugger’ and a multiple killer, culminating in the final maniacal axing of his friend Father Crean, illustrated here with Mackay’s own words. This book will be of interest to students of criminology, psychology, penology, government, and media.

Summary of Patrick K. O'Donnell's The Indispensables【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 1797, a boarding party from the British frigate the HMS Rose went searching for four Marblehead sailors who had hidden themselves in the forepeak, a small space near the main hold. When they refused to yield, the British lieutenant attempted to push them around. One of the Marbleheaders stabbed him in the neck with a harpoon, and he died soon after. #2 John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers and one of the most prominent attorneys in the colonies, represented Corbett at his trial. The witnesses all agreed in every detail. The council, which included the governor of Massachusetts, returned a surprising verdict: Justifiable homicide. #3 Marblehead, MA, was a major influence in the American Revolution, second only to Boston. The town’s economy was based on cod, which were fished by Marbleheaders from schooners. #4 Marblehead, MA, was a major influence on the American Revolution, and its inhabitants were extremely progressive for their time. The town was home to a mix of people of different races and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Poetry Of Patrick Branwell Bronte【電子書籍】[ Patrick Branwell Bronte ]

Patrick Branwell Bront? was born on June 26th. 1817. He was part of England’s greatest literary family together with his sisters Anne, Charlotte and Emily Jane. However that perhaps was to prove also his greatest misfortune. Although he was the first to be published as a poet in the 1840s he could make little headway after that whilst his sisters would produce some of the greatest works ever written in English. He sought solace as a tutor but after being fired for advances on the wife of his employer he descended into a drink fuelled decline. He was initially tempted by painting and his painting of his three sisters (with himself painted out) hangs in the National Gallery in London. He died on September 24th 1848.

Summary of Patrick Moore's Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The fact that a headline states that Africa’s oldest baobab trees are dying at an unprecedented rate is enough to suspect fakery. The word may appears in the subhead, which implies conjecture rather than a statement of fact. #2 The claim that the baobab tree is dying because of climate change is false. There is no evidence that links climate change to dead baobabs, and the oldest trees in their population are dying too. #3 The claim that there are only 10,000 baobab trees and that they are dying at an unprecedented rate is fake. It is clear that the story is fake, but even a Fox affiliate ran with it. #4 Climate change is killing the world’s oldest and largest baobab trees in Africa.

Summary of Patrick Carnes's A Gentle Path through the Twelve Steps【電子書籍】[ Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The First Step is designed to give you what you need to know for your journey. It helps you realize that you have a story, and that story is not hopeless or unchangeable. You have the opportunity to transform. #2 The First Step requires an admission of powerlessness over your living in the extremes. You must document both powerlessness and unmanageability in your life. This is the beginning of understanding the story of your illness. #3 The cost of addiction is loss of faith in your abilities. You can reprogram yourself with positive, healthy messages. Select from the list the affirmations that have meaning for you. Add some of your own. Tape the list on your mirror and repeat them while you are shaving or putting on your makeup. #4 Addiction is like living in a fun house. The insanity and unmanageability of addiction and codependency look normal to those who can see themselves only through the distorted lens of dysfunctional behavior and its consequences.

Summary of Patrick Carnes, Ph.D.'s Out of the Shadows【電子書籍】[ Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Hefner was forty-five, and had been with hundreds of photogenic women since starting his magazine, but he enjoyed female companionship more than ever. He was a sex junkie with an insatiable habit. #2 Del’s life was a mess. He was a lawyer, and while he was very successful, his public visibility was creating a problem because he was also a sexual addict. He would initiate relationships with women, feeling that he was in love, but would desperately wish to be free after the initial sexual contact. #3 Del’s story is one of constant predicaments. His addictive behavior put him in situations where he was vulnerable to tremendous consequences. His degradation was only exceeded by the violation of his own principles. #4 Sexual addiction is similar to other forms of addiction. It is a pathological relationship with a mood-altering chemical. The addict substitutes a sick relationship with an event or a process for a healthy relationship with others.

Summary of Patrick K. O'Donnell's The Brenner Assignment【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The author proposed to drop a man by parachute on the open country between Pocol and the Falzarego Pass, and drop enough Army mountain rations and personal equipment to sustain him indefinitely in the peaks if necessary. #2 Roderick Stephen Goodspeed Hall, born in Peking, China, in 1915, came from a privileged background. He attended Harvard University, and after a couple of semesters, he dropped out and went to Italy for the 1937-38 winter on a ski trip. #3 The OSS was America’s first central intelligence organization. It was created in the summer of 1941. Before the OSS was created, multiple government departments gathered information in reports sent arbitrarily up the chain of command in the hope that the most crucial information would reach the White House. #4 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt chose Wall Street lawyer William J. Donovan to lead the new agency, the OSS. He was a highly decorated hero of World War I, and he developed an integrated combined arms approach of shadow-war techniques.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The founder and CEO of Greenwich Consulting, Vince Green, was obsessed with beating his competitor, Telegraph Partners, in terms of revenue. He was also annoyed that Telegraph’s CEO, Rich O’Connor, rarely acknowledged Greenwich. #2 The consultant spent the next hour simply describing various aspects of Telegraph’s culture.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The story of one corner of the war in Iraq is the story of Marines, supported by service members from all branches, making progress against incredible odds. #2 The Marines and sailors of 2/3 worked hard to make the population respect them more than they fear them, and the enemy fear them more than they hate them. #3 Too many Marines and other service members who fought in the Triad did not return home from their deployments. Others spent years recovering from their injuries. Not a day has gone by since I left battalion command that I have not reflected on their sacrifices. #4 The 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment, known as the Island Warriors, was sent to the Haditha Triad region of western Iraq in late 2006. The Triad was a geographic term coined by the Marine Corps that consisted of the city of Haditha and a number of surrounding towns and villages.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 1774, Mordecai Gist gathered together a group of freemen in Baltimore who were interested in forming the first independent military company in Maryland to protect their rights. #2 The first independent company was the Baltimore Independent Cadets, formed in December 1774. They were the first of many similar companies that sprang up across the colonies. #3 The decision to rebel against Britain was made by the Continental Congress in September 1774. The colonies would boycott British goods if the Intolerable Acts weren’t repealed by December 1, 1774, and an embargo of British goods by September 1775 if the acts weren’t abolished. #4 The French and Indian War, which was a conflict between Britain and France, planted the seeds of an American way of waging war. The Americans who fought for Britain gained invaluable battle experience, and they learned Indian tactics.

Summary of Patrick M. Lencioni's Death by Meeting【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The most important meeting of McDaniel’s life was about to take place. It would determine the fate of his career, his financial future, and the company he had built from scratch. #2 The McDaniel family had lived modestly in Carmel for the past fifty years, and Casey grew up on or around the many golf courses in the area. He had a love for golf and computers, so he left home after high school to attend the University of Arizona on a golf scholarship. #3 Yip Software, the company that created the game, was successful because of its close relationship with golfers. It was a purely accidental occurrence that propelled the game beyond being a niche video game and onto the pages of Sports Illustrated. #4 Caseys company, Yip, was a success story. It had brought eight successful games to market, covering golf, cycling, and most recently, tennis. But there was another side to the company, and it was as baffling as it was undeniable.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In the summer of 1950, more than ten divisions of the North Korean People’s Army crossed the 38th Parallel in Korea. The 231,000 North Koreans launched a blitzkrieg-like attack that led to the complete capture of Seoul in three days. #2 The United States, prosperous and victorious from World War II, had largely shed its military might and had turned its attention to the business of building cars, homes, and factories. The only readily available combat units were understrength infantry divisions that were now taking part in the occupation of Japan. #3 After several weeks of desperate fighting on the Pusan Perimeter, America’s vastly outnumbered forces faced slaughter by superior numbers of North Korean troops. The First Marine Division was brought up to strength. #4 First Sergeant Zullo was the heart and soul of George Company. He was a fine officer, but in the minds of the men, he was the commanding officer. He had learned how to handle an ax and a crosscut saw at an early age, and he was a champion middleweight boxer.

The company president asked her to perform oral sex on clients in order to keep business. She was devastated, and her life was negatively affected. #2 When we are put in danger, our body goes into defense mode. Our physical systems become ready for action, and our electrochemical reactions between synapses in the brain accelerate. This is what happened to Lois, and she began to fall apart. #3 There are eight ways that trauma continues to affect people over time. They are: trauma reaction, trauma arousal, trauma blocking, trauma splitting, trauma abstinence, trauma shame, and trauma bonds. #4 The brain, body, and nervous system will adjust to any experience. They will acclimatize. So for survival, the soldier will continually bury the horrifying experiences into compartments in the brain.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The author’s wife, Carol, was a sales representative who had been thinking about going back to work. She had earned extra money working in a bank at the beginning of their marriage, and the money helped furnish their honeymoon apartment. By mutual agreement, she stopped working when Julie was born. #2 The couple was able to save up enough money to buy a boat and a car, and they were able to lease a two-bedroom house. But they were still struggling to make ends meet. The strain of keeping their household afloat began to take a toll on them. #3 The world in which we live has its own ideas about how to achieve the good life, ideas that are far different from God’s order. We strain to keep it all together, but the pressure is often like a tight band around our chest. #4 The American standard of living has improved greatly over the last century. However, our moral/spiritual/relational standard of living has plummeted. We are better-off than we were even just twenty-five years ago, but our desires for instant gratification have taken the place of deferring to a time when we can pay cash for our wants.

Summary of Patrick J. Michaels & Terence Kealey's Scientocracy【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The priestly class in classical Greece was not as powerful as the scientists who emerged in medieval Europe, and so the writings of Francis Bacon still have the power to startle. Bacon was the first great philosopher of science, and he wrote that science was a gateway to the sublime. #2 While science has flourished in the modern era, it has lately come to be captured by the state. Scientists have long sought state funding, and as a result, they have long aligned themselves with state doctrines. #3 The argument that science is a public good is false because it ignores the principle of opportunity benefit, which is the converse of opportunity cost. If there is a choice between doing A or B, and if A is chosen over B, the opportunity cost is the forgone benefit from B. But if A is more valuable than B, it is rational to choose A for its additional or opportunity benefit. #4 The linear model, which looks like this: was proposed by Bacon, and it was believed that academic research was the source of industrial technology. But modern scholarship shows that it is advances in industrial technology that stimulate academic research.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The path to mimicry, which is to attract people to your brand, seems to lead to dead ends. While it is easy to explain why Coke has achieved brand loyalty after over 100 years of consumer advertising and marketing support, it is difficult to explain how Starbucks has achieved similar consumer loyalty without any advertising. #2 The seven pieces of primal code that make up a brand are: the creation story, the creed, the icons, the rituals, the pagans, the sacred words, and the leader. Together, these pieces of code construct a belief system. #3 Believing is belonging. When you are able to create brands that people believe in, you also create groups of people who feel that they belong. This sense of community is at the center of psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs. #4 The seven pieces of code that make up a belief system are the creation story, the creed, the icons, the rituals, the pagans, or nonbelievers, the sacred words, and the leader. When products and services have all seven pieces of code, they become a part of our culture.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In 1972, Jean McConville, who was thirty-eight when she disappeared, had fourteen children. She had just gotten out of the bath when eight people burst into her apartment and tried to force her to go with them. The children went berserk, and the intruders tried to calm them down. #2 One night, Jean McConville was kidnapped from her home in Divis Flats by the IRA. Her children, who were still there, watched as she was taken away. #3 When Dolours was a little girl, her family were extremely committed to the republican cause. Her father, Albert, was an upholsterer who made the chairs that occupied the cramped front room. He would tell his children stories about the bravery of long-dead patriots. #4 The Price family, like many in Northern Ireland, had a tendency to talk about calamities from the past as though they had just happened last week. The Easter Rising of 1916, in which a clutch of Irish revolutionaries seized the post office in Dublin and declared the establishment of a free and independent Irish Republic, was a source of pride for the family.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 DecisionTech was a technology start-up that was located in Half Moon Bay, a foggy, coastal farming town just over the hills from the San Francisco Bay. It had the most experienced and expensive executive team imaginable, and more top-tier investors than any young company could hope for. #2 Kathryn had no experience in high-tech, but she was a great leader, and the board believed she would succeed. The Chairman insisted that there weren’t many capable executives willing to take on such a messy job, but he hired Kathryn anyway. #3 The Chairman offered Kathryn the job, and she was surprised. She had always thought of him as a social acquaintance, not a professional admirer. She had an amazing ability to build teams, and he thought she could help fix the problems at DecisionTech. #4 After her first two weeks on the job, Kathryn did almost nothing. She walked the halls, talked to employees, and silently observed as many meetings as she could. She asked Jeff Shanley to continue leading the weekly executive staff meetings, where she just listened and took notes.

The Letters Of Patrick White【電子書籍】[ David Marr ]

From the time when he was a little boy, Patrick White wrote letters - brilliant, gossipy, funny, angry, heartfelt letters. When he died in 1990 at the age of 78, between 2, 500 and 3, 000 of them survived, scattered - and often treasured - all over the world. In the course of producing his much-admired biography of White, David Marr tracked down most of them. Now, with sensitivity and skill, he has assembled a rich selection from the letters to present a fascinating portrait of White in his unihibited words - as a writer, as a friend (or enemy), as a man deeply and painfully engaged with his world.

Summary of Patrick Wood's Technocracy Rising【電子書籍】[ ? Everest Media ]

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The period between 1890 and 1930 was a pivotal time for the future of the world. All notions of Biblical inerrancy and historical accuracy had been discarded by the intellectual elite. Radical new inventions created by scientists and engineers were revolutionizing both the physical and social world. #2 The French philosopher Auguste Comte was the founder of Positivism, a philosophy that was very popular in the late 1800s. Positivism claimed that only scientific knowledge was authentic, and discarded all notions of absolute truth based on the Bible or metaphysical truth based on man’s imaginations. #3 Scientism takes Positivism to an extreme by claiming that science alone can produce truth about the world and reality. It rejects all philosophical, religious and metaphysical claims to understand reality since the truth it portends cannot be validated by the Scientific Method. #4 The philosophy of Darwinism grew out of Charles Darwin’s book The Origin of Species, which proposed that all life naturally evolved over long periods of time from the most simple creature to the most complex. It specifically rejected the Biblical account of creation and in general all thoughts of intelligent design.
