Can Machines Have Free Will? The Concept of Free Will in Relation to the Psychophysical Problem【電子書籍】[ Jan Hartman ]

The author analyses the concept of free will in the context of the psychophysical problem. He builds his analysis upon the presumption that the contemporary debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists is not of high relevance, since “free will” is a highly technical and vague term. So instead of directly answering questions like “Is free will possible?” or “What is free will?”, he starts his analyses from specifying a solution to the psychophysical problem and then works towards a possible definition of free will.

Four Views on Free Will【電子書籍】[ John Martin Fischer ]

A lively and engaging debate between four representative views on free will, completely revised and updated with new perspectives

Four Views on Free Will is a robust and careful debate about free will, how it interacts with determinism and indeterminism, and whether we have it or not. Providing the most up-to-date account of four major positions in the free will debate, the second edition of this classic text presents the opposing perspectives of renowned philosophers John Martin Fischer, Robert Kane, Derk Pereboom, and Manuel Vargas.

Substantially revised throughout, this new volume contains eight in-depth chapters, almost entirely rewritten for the new edition, in which the authors state their different positions on the debate, offer insights into how their views have evolved over the past fifteen years, respond to recent critical literature in the field, and interact and engage with each other in dialogue. In the first four chapters the authors defend their distinctive views about free will: libertarianism, compatibilism, hard incompatibilism, and revisionism. The subsequent four chapters consist of direct replies by each of the authors to the other three.

Offering a one-of-a-kind interactive conversation about the most recent work on the subject, Four Views on Free Will, Second Edition provides a balanced and enlightening discussion on all the key concepts and conflicts in the free will debate. Part of the acclaimed Great Debates in Philosophy series, it remains essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students, lecturers and scholars in philosophy, ethics, free will, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, law, and related subjects.

The Problem of Free Will and Naturalism Paradoxes and Kantian Solutions【電子書籍】[ Christian Onof ]

The problem of free will is one of the oldest and most central philosophical conundrums. The contemporary debate around it has produced a range of sophisticated proposals, but shows no sign of leading to convergence. Christian Onof reviews these contemporary approaches and argues that their main shortcomings are ultimately due to paradoxical requirements on free will imposed by the naturalistic framework.

Onof singles out Kant's critical solution as one that stands out among historical approaches insofar as it is based upon a rejection of this framework. By using the same methodological tool that he applies to contemporary proposals, namely a distinction between a volitional account of how we control our actions, a psychological account of the reasons for it and a metaphysical account of our status as agent, Onof shows that Kant's solution constitutes a coherent picture of free will.

By exhibiting the structure running through several key publications of Kant's critical period and drawing upon unpublished notes, Onof addresses several debates which loom large in contemporary Kant literature. His exegetical work puts Kant's theory into conversation with contemporary analytic theories of free will and leads to defining a Kantian position that overcomes the issues plaguing existing approaches to the problem of free will.

Free Agents How Evolution Gave Us Free Will【電子書籍】[ Rae Treasure ]

Traversing billions of years of evolution, this book is a summary of Mitchell's remarkable story of how living beings capable of choice arose from lifeless matter. He explains how the emergence of nervous systems provided a means to learn about the world, granting sentient animals the capacity to model, predict, and simulate. He also reveals how these faculties reached their peak in humans with our abilities to imagine and to be introspective, to reason in the moment, and to shape our possible futures through the exercise of our individual agency. Mitchell’s argument has important implicationsーfor how we understand decision making, for how our individual agency can be enhanced or infringed, for how we think about collective agency in the face of global crises, and for how we consider the limitations and future of artificial intelligence.

Buy this book to know more...

Free Will, Do You Have It? Behaviour is the Result of Process, Rather than Choice【電子書籍】[ Albertus Kral ]

This second edition is fine-tuned to provide a smooth reading experience.

The "free will" debate has never, conclusively, been solved, otherwise we would not have this conversation. There is basically one group that says, "We have free will", while the other group of people says, "We do not have free will". The great majority of people do believe we have free will.

In this book, I present a third option, one that has never been presented before. My theory, called "Procirclism", goes far beyond the free will issue. This theory can be applied to all human behaviour, always and anywhere. It provides us with an understanding we may have never thought about. Every chapter and subject discussed in the book is an integral part of the theory, without which the theory can not exist. I realize I have gone far away from the conventional thinking patterns but it was the only option to present a completely new approach in which the answer is embedded.

Behaviour is the result of process rather than choice. This is a fundamental concept and worth pondering for a moment because the implications are far-reaching. How would we respond if we received a phone call from our friend who is in Russia? He or she went to Russia without ever before having traveled outside of the country, and never mentioned anything about any plans to go to Russia. We just talked with our friend two days ago and nothing was mentioned about traveling. "Why?" is most likely to be among our first questions. Now I ask why we just don't believe that our friend got up one day and decided, without any reason or motive, to travel to Russia where he or she has no family or friends. Choice? Process?

During murder trials, the prosecution desperately tries to find a motive, because it is difficult to understand that someone would commit murder without a motive or reason; insanity only provides half of the answer. If anyone could commit murder without motive, reason, or any other influential factor then we would have to try hard, every day, not to murder someone. Yes, sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

My concept of Procirclism is not a collection of previous thoughts presented in a different manner, but it is a novel approach and concept, addressing questions that have occupied some inquiring minds for centuries.

There is a reason why a full album of songs did not appear as a follow-up. Both producer Bob Thiele and Scott-Heron's writing partner Brian Jackson had been keen to move forward quickly with song-based material, but Scott-Heron saw himself first and foremost as a writer. A new novel, The Nigger Factory, would be published in 1972 and he also enrolled for writing seminars at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Once the decision was made to combine poetry and song, sessions were booked for the 2nd and 3rd March 1972. The first session with Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie (drums), Hubert Laws (flute/piccolo), David Spinozza (guitar), Jerry Jemmott (bass) and Brian Jackson (electric and acoustic piano) recorded the songs with Horace Ott taking care of the arrangements. The second session was dedicated to poetry, recorded with Scott-Heron, Jackson, Eddie Knowles and Charlie Sanders from their college group Black & Blues. Free Will was released in 1972. The song side included the heart-rending Vietnam war commentary of 'Do You Hear What They Said?', the propulsive title track and the beautiful 'The Middle Of Your Day'. The poetry side immerses you in the radical politics of the day via 'No Knock' and 'The King Alfred Plan', and ends with his heartfelt tribute to John Coltrane '... and then he wrote Meditations'. Like Pieces Of A Man it is a classic and a cornerstone of any record collection. When BGP inherited the honour of looking after the Flying Dutchman legacy we discovered that, as well as being almost unparalleled in his discovery of great talent, Bob Thiele also recorded it immaculately. The label's master tapes sounded exceptional and when it has come to our reissue series have only ever required the most minimal of EQ before transferring them onto disc. With this is mind we have embarked on a series of all analogue re-mastering projects, to bring the listener as close to the sound captured on tape as possible. Our first release was Gil Scott-Heron's Pieces Of A Man which was released early in 2023 and this second outing is Free Will. We took the original master tape to Frank Merritt at the Carvery who transferred the audio and mastered it before making this new cut himself. We then had it pressed on 180 gram vinyl and our only wish now is that you drop the needle, sit back and go back to 1972 to enjoy Gil Scott-Heron in his prime.

Fichte on Free Will and Predestination【電子書籍】[ Kienhow Goh ]

The book explains Fichte’s position on free will and predestination, including its rationale and significance. It argues that Fichte affirms both free will and predestination and explains how he purports to do so without contradiction.

The book presents Fichte’s position as a form of compatibilism that has not yet been explored in the literature. Due to early rationalist convictions, Fichte is as much concerned with reconciling freedom with a logical and a theological determinism as he is with a causal determinism. He sees in Kant’s novel concept of a pure practical reason a new form of rationalism, one consisting of a system of moral rather than natural necessitating grounds. At the same time, he adopts a more radically libertarian stance on free will than Kant. Every member in a sequence of free actions is a “first and absolute member” and could be other than it is given the same antecedent natural events and natural laws. The interest of Fichte as a theorist of freedom lies in how he brings together freedom and predetermination in a way that challenges our assumption about their mutual exclusivity. The book provides an overview of Fichte’s philosophical system ? the so-called “Doctrine of Science” ? from 1793 to 1800 with the aim of contextualizing his theory of free agency and destiny. In doing so, it sheds light on how consideration of these issues in turn shapes the system.

Fichte on Free Will and Predestination will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on Fichte’s philosophy, the history of modern philosophy, German Idealism, and the history of the philosophical issue of free will.

THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL Luther's Reply to Erasmus' On Free Will【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]

In Martin Luther's 'The Bondage of the Will', the author presents a scathing critique of free will within the context of the Protestant Reformation. Written in a clear and straightforward manner, Luther argues against the notion of human free will in salvation, asserting the sovereignty of God's grace. Drawing upon biblical texts and engaging with the writings of his opponent, Erasmus, Luther dismantles the idea that humans have the power to choose their own salvation. The book is a significant theological work that challenges preconceived notions of free will and emphasizes the importance of divine grace in the Christian faith. Martin Luther, a key figure in the Reformation, was driven to write 'The Bondage of the Will' in response to Erasmus' defense of free will. Luther's deep knowledge of theology and commitment to his convictions shine through in this work, as he presents a compelling argument in favor of predestination and divine sovereignty. His background as a theologian and reformer lends credibility to his polemic against free will. I highly recommend 'The Bondage of the Will' to readers interested in the theological debates of the Reformation era, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between human agency and divine sovereignty in Christian theology.

Satan is Targeting Man's Free Will Bible Studies, #17【電子書籍】[ Leslie Rendell ]

When God created mankind in his image, he gave us some remarkable abilities. We are so totally different to other species here on the earth, and that most certainly includes the apes. By being created in the image of God, this gave us the ability to invent and build some amazing things. Look at the world around us, and you will see the way humans live is so unique.
This is all because God gave us all the free will to do what we want. There is nothing held back from us that is possible to achieve within the laws of nature that God has designed. When man first started to fly it was because men thought it was possible to accomplish, and so they invented the aeroplane. The same for everything humans have built over time.
None of these abilities have been given to any other animal. It is the sole prerogative of the human race. Our free will has been vital for these developments to take place.
It is unfortunate that with our free will, we are also capable of doing a great deal of evil. Have another look at the surrounding world and see the types of evil man can do when his heart is set on doing evil instead of doing good.
Satan is using our free will to draw us away from God. He is the father of lies and his intentions are to destroy us all. He is known as the deceiver of the whole world and has led many people astray.
The purpose of this book is to make you aware of what he is trying to do in your life and how you can resist him.

Ultimate Freedom Beyond Free Will【電子書籍】[ Keith Lehrer ]

Philosopher Keith Lehrer outlines a view of freedom of choice based on a Kahneman-derived distinction between what he calls a first order system that is intuitive and immediate, and a higher order system of response, which he calls a second system of scientific analysis. Lehrer argues that freedom of choice is an expression of attention to the higher order system, and that what is often called free will is often just doing what you desire, a response that neglects consideration of other options. Freedom of choice acknowledges those options, and preference among them forms in response to the acceptance of evidence. We might suppose that in responding to beliefs that one has attended to evidence, but that is a delusion, because our higher order acceptance of evidence can be overwhelmed by the fixation created by first level belief. What is the difference between just doing what you desire because it feels good and acting on what you prefer because of scientific acceptance? Lehrer points to a form of preference that he says is the ultimate explanation of choice -- what he calls a power preference. It is a preference that loops back on to itself, a fixed-point vector, and suffices to explain choice. Lehrer's theory of such a power preference includes scientific explanation and consistently accommodates determinism. It is itself a scientific and philosophical explanation, and an ultimate principle of explanation. Lehrer terms the freedom of choice expressing that preference ?ultimate freedom?-- the source of our knowledge and agency both in theory, directing what we rationally accept, and in practice directing freedom of choice.

Free Agents How Evolution Gave Us Free Will【電子書籍】[ Kevin J. Mitchell ]

An evolutionary case for the existence of free will

Scientists are learning more and more about how brain activity controls behavior and how neural circuits weigh alternatives and initiate actions. As we probe ever deeper into the mechanics of decision making, many conclude that agencyーor free willーis an illusion. In Free Agents, leading neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell presents a wealth of evidence to the contrary, arguing that we are not mere machines responding to physical forces but agents acting with purpose.

Traversing billions of years of evolution, Mitchell tells the remarkable story of how living beings capable of choice arose from lifeless matter. He explains how the emergence of nervous systems provided a means to learn about the world, granting sentient animals the capacity to model, predict, and simulate. Mitchell reveals how these faculties reached their peak in humans with our abilities to imagine and to be introspective, to reason in the moment, and to shape our possible futures through the exercise of our individual agency. Mitchell’s argument has important implicationsーfor how we understand decision making, for how our individual agency can be enhanced or infringed, for how we think about collective agency in the face of global crises, and for how we consider the limitations and future of artificial intelligence.

An astonishing journey of discovery, Free Agents offers a new framework for understanding how, across a billion years of Earth history, life evolved the power to choose, and why it matters.

"The Illusion of Free Will: Philosophical and Scientific Considerations" is a comprehensive exploration of the concept of free will from both philosophical and scientific perspectives. The book is organized into 8 parts, each with at least 4 subsections, covering topics such as the historical debate on free will, the role of neuroscience and genetics in shaping behavior, the illusion of conscious will, the evolutionary origins of free will, moral responsibility, personal identity, consciousness, and the practical implications of the illusion of free will for society.
The book challenges the commonly held belief that individuals possess free will and the ability to make conscious decisions. Instead, it argues that our sense of control over our decisions is an illusion, shaped by cognitive biases and environmental factors. The authors explore different theories on determinism and indeterminism, as well as compatibilism and incompatibilism, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the concept of free will.
In addition to its philosophical inquiry, the book also examines the scientific basis of free will, including the role of genetics, neuroscience, and environmental factors in shaping behavior. It also explores the implications of the illusion of free will for personal identity and moral responsibility.
Overall, "The Illusion of Free Will" is a thought-provoking and informative book that challenges our assumptions about the nature of free will and its impact on human behavior and society.

Freedom Regained The Possibility of Free Will【電子書籍】[ Julian Baggini ]

“For anyone who has ever given serious thought to the degree to which our actions are within our own control, Freedom Regained will give you a lot to chew on.” ーSpectrum Culture

It’s a question that’s puzzled philosophers and theologians for centuries and is at the heart of numerous political, social, and personal concerns: Do we have free will? In this cogent, compelling book, Julian Baggini explores the concept of free will from every angle, blending philosophy, sociology, and cognitive science to find rich new insights on the intractable questions that plague us. Are we products of our culture, or free agents within it? Are our neural pathways fixed early on by a mix of nature and nurture, or is the possibility of comprehensive, intentional psychological change always open to us? And what, exactly, are we talking about when we talk about “freedom” anyway?

Freedom Regained brings the issues raised by the possibilitiesーand denialsーof free will to thought-provoking life, drawing on scientific research and fascinating encounters with everyone from artists to prisoners to dissidents. Baggini looks at what it means to be material beings in a universe of natural laws. He asks if there’s any difference between ourselves and the brains from which we seem never able to escape. He throws down the wild cards and plays them to the fullest: What about art? What about addiction? What about twins? And he asks, of course, what this all means for politics.

Ultimately, Baggini challenges those who think free will is an illusion. Moving from doubt to optimism to a hedged acceptance of free will, he ultimately lands on a satisfying conclusion: It is something we earn. The result is a highly engaging, new, and more positive understanding of our sense of personal freedom, a freedom that is definitely worth having.

“Entertaining.” ーThe Wall Street Journal

“While firmly rooted in the philosophical tradition, Baggini also gets out and talks to people for whom freedomーand lack of itーis a real and pressing matter.” ーLiterary Review

The Self Beyond Itself An Alternative History of Ethics, the New Brain Sciences, and the Myth of Free Will【電子書籍】[ Heidi M. Ravven ]

“Intertwines history, philosophy, and science . . . A powerful challenge to conventional notions of individual responsibility” (Publishers Weekly).

Few concepts are more unshakable in our culture than free will, the idea that individuals are fundamentally in control of the decisions they make, good or bad. And yet the latest research about how the brain functions seems to point in the opposite direction . . .

In a work of breathtaking intellectual sweep and erudition, Heidi M. Ravven offers a riveting and accessible review of cutting-edge neuroscientific research into the brain’s capacity for decision-makingーfrom “mirror” neurons and “self-mapping” to surprising new understandings of group psychology. The Self Beyond Itself also introduces readers to a rich, alternative philosophical tradition of ethics, rooted in the writing of Baruch Spinoza, that finds uncanny confirmation in modern science.

Illustrating the results of today’s research with real-life examples, taking readers from elementary school classrooms to Nazi concentration camps, Ravven demonstrates that it is possible to build a theory of ethics that doesn’t rely on free will yet still holds both individuals and groups responsible for the decisions that help create a good society. The Self Beyond Itself is that rare book that injects new ideas into an old debateーand “an important contribution to the development of our thinking about morality” (Washington Independent Review of Books).

“An intellectual hand-grenade . . . A magisterial survey of how contemporary neuroscience supports a vision of human morality which puts it squarely on the same plane as other natural phenomena.” ーWilliam D. Casebeer, author of Natural Ethical Facts
