The Will to Believe, and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy Enriched edition. Exploring the Depths of Belief and Free Will【電子書籍】[ William James ]

|

In "The Will to Believe, and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy," William James presents a compelling exploration of the relationship between belief, faith, and rationality. Written in accessible prose, this collection of essays delves into philosophical concepts grounded in pragmatism'ーa movement for which James is a pivotal figure. Through analyses of belief systems, particularly in religious contexts, James asserts that our will to believe can be justified in the absence of definitive evidence, emphasizing the role of personal experience and subjective truth in shaping beliefs. This collection conveys the vibrant intellectual climate of the late 19th century, where philosophical inquiry was increasingly intertwined with psychology and the social sciences. William James, an eminent psychologist and philosopher, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous socio-political landscape of his time as well as his own interdisciplinary upbringing in a prominent intellectual family. His formative experiences in both philosophy and psychology, along with his interest in spirituality, culminated in this work, which challenges conventional epistemology and seeks to redefine the boundaries of rational thought. By promoting a pluralism of beliefs, James not only engages with philosophical doctrines but also examines their practical implications for personal conviction and moral life. Readers seeking a profound yet approachable dive into philosophical thought will find "The Will to Believe" an essential text. It encourages critical introspection regarding the nature of belief and the interplay between science and spirituality. James' insightful analyses and accessible writing style make this work suitable for both seasoned philosophers and those new to the field, urging readers to reconsider the power and importance of their own beliefs.
John Milton'??s "Paradise Lost" stands as a monumental epic poem that intricately weaves a rich tapestry of theological and philosophical inquiry about the Fall of Man. Written in blank verse, this 17th-century masterpiece delves into the complexities of free will, obedience, and temptation, drawing heavily on Scripture and classical literature. Milton's profound use of language and vivid imagery invites readers to explore the characters of God, Satan, and humanity in the cosmic battle between good and evil, all while setting the stage for profound reflections on the nature of sin and redemption in a rapidly changing post-Renaissance world. As a highly educated individual with a background in theology, history, and politics, John Milton was deeply influenced by the tumultuous events of his time, including the English Civil War and the quest for religious freedom. His own experiences with censorship and his eventual blindness enriched his perspective on the human condition, imbuing "Paradise Lost" with a sense of urgency and fervor. Milton'??s commitment to defending liberty'??both personal and spiritual'??shapes the text's exploration of the human struggles against authoritarianism and dogma. "Paradise Lost" is an essential read for anyone seeking to engage with existential questions about faith, autonomy, and morality. Moral Responsibility Beyond Free Will and Determinism【電子書籍】
|

It is well over a decade since John Fischer and Mark Ravizza ? and before them, Jay Wallace and Daniel Dennett ? defended responsibility from the threat of determinism. But defending responsibility from determinism is a potentially endless and largely negative enterprise; it can go on for as long as dissenting voices remain, and although such work strengthens the theoretical foundations of these theories, it won’t necessarily build anything on top of those foundations, nor will it move these theories into new territory or explain how to apply them to practical contexts.

To this end, the papers in this volume address these more positive challenges by exploring how compatibilist responsibility theory can be extended and/or applied in a range of practical contexts. For instance, how is the narrow philosophical concept of responsibility that was defended from the threat of determinism related to the plural notions of responsibility present in everyday discourse, and how might this more fine-grained understanding of responsibility open up new vistas and challenges for compatibilist theory? What light might compatibilism shed, and what light might be shed upon it, by political debates about access to public welfare in the context of responsibility for one’s own health, and by legal debates about the impact of self-intoxication on responsibility. Does compatibilist theory, which was originally designed to cater for analysis of individual actions, scale to scenarios that involve group action and collective responsibility ー e.g. for harms due to human-induced climate change?

This book’s chapters deal with a range of theoretical problems discussed in classic compatibilist literature ー e.g. the relationship between responsibility and capacity, the role of historical tracing in discounting the exculpatory value of incapacities, and the justifiability of retributive punishment. But instead of motivating theirdiscussions by focusing on the alleged threat that determinism poses to responsibility, these chapters’ authors have animated their discussions by tackling important practical problems which crop up in contemporary debates about responsibility.

Hooked Food, Free Will, and How the Food Giants Exploit Our Addictions【電子書籍】[ Michael Moss ]
|

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? From the author of Salt Sugar Fat comes a “gripping” (The Wall Street Journal) expos? of how the processed food industry exploits our evolutionary instincts, the emotions we associate with food, and legal loopholes in their pursuit of profit over public health.

“The processed food industry has managed to avoid being lumped in with Big Tobaccoーwhich is why Michael Moss’s new book is so important.”ーCharles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit

Everyone knows how hard it can be to maintain a healthy diet. But what if some of the decisions we make about what to eat are beyond our control? Is it possible that food is addictive, like drugs or alcohol? And to what extent does the food industry know, or care, about these vulnerabilities? In Hooked, Pulitzer Prize?winning investigative reporter Michael Moss sets out to answer these questionsーand to find the true peril in our food.

Moss uses the latest research on addiction to uncover what the scientific and medical communitiesーas well as food manufacturersーalready know: that food, in some cases, is even more addictive than alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs. Our bodies are hardwired for sweets, so food giants have developed fifty-six types of sugar to add to their products, creating in us the expectation that everything should be cloying; we’ve evolved to prefer fast, convenient meals, hence our modern-day preference for ready-to-eat foods. Moss goes on to show how the processed food industryーincluding major companies like Nestl?, Mars, and Kellogg’sーhas tried not only to evade this troubling discovery about the addictiveness of food but to actually exploit it. For instance, in response to recent dieting trends, food manufacturers have simply turned junk food into junk diets, filling grocery stores with “diet” foods that are hardly distinguishable from the products that got us into trouble in the first place. As obesity rates continue to climb, manufacturers are now claiming to add ingredients that can effortlessly cure our compulsive eating habits.

A gripping account of the legal battles, insidious marketing campaigns, and cutting-edge food science that have brought us to our current public health crisis, Hooked lays out all that the food industry is doing to exploit and deepen our addictions, and shows us why what we eat has never mattered more.

In "An Examination of President Edwards' Inquiry into the Freedom of the Will," Albert Taylor Bledsoe presents a thorough critique of Jonathan Edwards' philosophical notions surrounding free will and determinism. Bledsoe intricately examines Edwards' arguments through a meticulous analysis of metaphysical implications, employing a clear and rigorous rhetorical style that engages both the mind and the spirit. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century American thought, the book interweaves theological inquiry with emerging philosophical discourse, contributing significantly to discussions that resonate in the realms of morality, freedom, and human agency. Bledsoe, a notable scholar and theologian himself, drew deeply from his extensive education and the intellectual environment of his time. Influenced by the fervor of the antebellum American South, he grappled with the implications of freedom and moral responsibility, particularly in relation to the growing abolitionist movement and the complex social issues of his era. His depth of understanding in both philosophy and theology informs his rigorous examination of Edwards, revealing Bledsoe's commitment to intellectual honesty and moral clarity. Recommended for scholars of philosophy and theology alike, Bledsoe's work not only provides critical insights into Edwards' theology but also serves as a broader commentary on the enduring questions of human freedom and ethical responsibility. Just Deserts Debating Free Will【電子書籍】[ Daniel C. Dennett ]
|

The concept of free will is profoundly important to our self-understanding, our interpersonal relationships, and our moral and legal practices. If it turns out that no one is ever free and morally responsible, what would that mean for society, morality, meaning, and the law?

Just Deserts brings together two philosophers ? Daniel C. Dennett and Gregg D. Caruso ? to debate their respective views on free will, moral responsibility, and legal punishment. In three extended conversations, Dennett and Caruso present their arguments for and against the existence of free will and debate their implications. Dennett argues that the kind of free will required for moral responsibility is compatible with determinism ? for him, self-control is key; we are not responsible for becoming responsible, but are responsible for staying responsible, for keeping would-be puppeteers at bay. Caruso takes the opposite view, arguing that who we are and what we do is ultimately the result of factors beyond our control, and because of this we are never morally responsible for our actions in the sense that would make us truly deserving of blame and praise, punishment and reward.

Just Deserts introduces the concepts central to the debate about free will and moral responsibility by way of an entertaining, rigorous, and sometimes heated philosophical dialogue between two leading thinkers.

Determined A Science of Life without Free Will【電子書籍】[ Robert M. Sapolsky ]

**The instant New York Times bestseller

“Excellent . . . Outstanding for its breadth of research, the liveliness of the writing, and the depth of humanity it conveys.” ?Wall Street Journal

One of our great behavioral scientists, the bestselling author of Behave, mounts a devastating scientific and philosophical case against free willーan argument with profound consequences**

Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: we may not grasp exactly how nature and nurture create the physics and chemistry that cause all human behavior, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self who tells our biology what to do.

Determined offers a marvelous synthesis of what we know about consciousnessーthe tight weave between reason and emotion and between stimulus and response in the moment and over a life. One by one, Sapolsky takes out all the major arguments for free will, cutting a path through the thickets of chaos theory and quantum physics. But as Sapolsky acknowledges, it’s sometimes impossible to uncouple from our zeal to judge people, including ourselves. Determined applies this new understanding to some of our most essential questions around punishment, morality, and living well together. Most of all, Sapolsky argues that while accepting the reality about free will is monumentally difficult, it will make for a much more humane world.

THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL Luther's Reply to Erasmus' On Free Will【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]
|

In 'The Bondage of the Will', Martin Luther explores the theology of predestination and free will, engaging in a theological debate with Erasmus over the nature of human choice and God's sovereignty. Written in a clear and persuasive style, Luther presents his arguments with biblical references and logical reasoning, making it a seminal work in the development of Protestant theology. The book is a crucial text in understanding the Reformation movement and its implications on Christian beliefs. The arguments presented are structured and thought-provoking, challenging readers to reexamine their views on salvation and human agency. Martin Luther, a German theologian and key figure in the Protestant Reformation, wrote 'The Bondage of the Will' in response to Erasmus' views on free will. Luther's background as a monk and scholar influenced his strong convictions on the relationship between God's grace and human obedience, shaping his theological writings. I highly recommend 'The Bondage of the Will' to readers interested in philosophy, theology, and the history of Christianity. Luther's insights into the complexities of divine sovereignty and human will offer valuable perspectives on faith and salvation.

Free Agents How Evolution Gave Us Free Will【電子書籍】[ Kevin Mitchell ]
|

An evolutionary case for the existence of free will

Scientists are learning more and more about how brain activity controls behavior and how neural circuits weigh alternatives and initiate actions. As we probe ever deeper into the mechanics of decision making, many conclude that agencyーor free willーis an illusion. In Free Agents, leading neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell presents a wealth of evidence to the contrary, arguing that we are not mere machines responding to physical forces but agents acting with purpose.

Traversing billions of years of evolution, Mitchell tells the remarkable story of how living beings capable of choice arose from lifeless matter. He explains how the emergence of nervous systems provided a means to learn about the world, granting sentient animals the capacity to model, predict, and simulate. Mitchell reveals how these faculties reached their peak in humans with our abilities to imagine and to be introspective, to reason in the moment, and to shape our possible futures through the exercise of our individual agency. Mitchell’s argument has important implicationsーfor how we understand decision making, for how our individual agency can be enhanced or infringed, for how we think about collective agency in the face of global crises, and for how we consider the limitations and future of artificial intelligence.

An astonishing journey of discovery, Free Agents offers a new framework for understanding how, across a billion years of Earth history, life evolved the power to choose, and why it matters.
