Socialist Agriculture In Transition Organizational Response To Failing Performance【電子書籍】[ Joseph C Brada ]

Because of altered investment priorities, policymakers in socialist countries can no longer increase the resources devoted to agriculture as they have in the past. Instead, they must seek alternative means of improving agricultural performance. One approach has been to change the structure of socialist agriculture and to foster organizational changes within agricultural units. The contributors to this volume evaluate such reforms and weigh their implications for agricultural output and trade. They examine the normless links being introduced in the USSR and compare Soviet experiences with the successes of Chinese and Hungarian reorganizations; describe and analyze the changes being implemented in the German Democratic Republic, Yugoslavia, and Vietnam; and pay particular attention to the role of Polish agriculture in the production crisis and to agriculture's potential for improving Poland's overall economic performance. The contributors also address issues of infrastructure development, the incentives being developed to foster more efficient allocation of resources within the agricultural sector, and the likely growth of East-West and intra-socialist agricultural trade.

Failing Our Fathers Confronting the Crisis of Economically Vulnerable Nonresident Fathers【電子書籍】[ Ronald B. Mincy ]

Maligned as "deadbeat dads" or sexually and financially irresponsible inner-city fathers and overlooked in discussions of poverty and family policy, economically vulnerable nonresident fathers are a greatly misunderstood population. Failing Our Fathers summarizes the most recent quantitative and qualitative research, and undertakes new analyses to fill in important gaps, to produce a comprehensive picture of who these fathers are, what types of relationships they have with their families and children, and the challenges they face meeting what their loved ones and taxpayers expect from them. The great majority of these men see their children on a regular basis, despite the financial, legal, and extra-legal barriers they face. Besides requiring fathers to support their children, we must enable them to do so by supplementing their earnings and supporting their co-parenting, in ways that parallel how we require and enable vulnerable single mothers to support their children. The book lays out specific reforms required to achieve this goal as well as tips for those resources for economically vulnerable nonresident fathers.

Denied! Failing Cordelia: Parental Love and Parental-State Theft in Los Angeles Juvenile Dependency Court Book One: the Cankered Rose and Esther's Revenge【電子書籍】[ Simon Cambridge ]

The Cankered Rose and Esther's Revenge begins the author's dramatic journey of adopting his teenage daughter with severe attachment issues in Seattle. The heartbreak of then seeing Cordelia "stolen" by the efforts of his former wife and the child-welfare legal complex in Los Angeles, alongside that of the trauma of being denied during efforts to reunify with her are each foreshadowed here.

Issues surrounding adoption trauma, parenting children with reactive attachment disorder, and the author's own struggles with Asperger's syndrome will be his constant companions on this perilous journey of adopting, losing, and then trying to reunite with his beloved daughter.

In this and subsequent volumes, the author will also be questioning the ability of the child-welfare legal complex and the Los Angeles Juvenile Dependency Court to understand the nature of damaged child attachment or the therapeutic parenting needed to heal children with "special needs." Ultimately, each would be as responsible for "failing Cordelia" as the breaking of the violent waves for the shattering movement of the rocks on the beach.

Detroit's School Failure By Design! Why Urban Schools Are Failing And How To Fix Them!【電子書籍】[ Roosevelt Williams ]

This book explains how Detroit earned its reputation as the worst public school system in the country. It is the story of one man’s attempt to teach his students traditional history in a Detroit classroom, and the District’s determination to stop him. Along the way, he was selected by the principal for “special assistance” because of the number of failing grades in his classes. Detroit officials disapproved of his students reading the textbook, preparing outlines as a study tool, his lecturing to students, and his insistence that his students work to pass his classes. That teacher, Roosevelt Williams, the author wrote the book so that the public can understand that urban schools are failing because of the decisions and policies of the school’s administrators.

Using the administrative hearing transcripts, the teacher/author exposes the official’s thinking and the tragic consequences on the Detroit students. The Michigan Teacher Tenure Commission, charged with protecting tenured teachers, endorsed the dismissal decision, stating the Detroit Board: “sought to advance the learning process beyond the level of memorization and rote learning prevalent in appellant’s classroom to capture the attention of the students, to engage them in the learning process and to develop higher level thinking skills by the students.”

Finally, the author points out a number of shortcomings to help the schools live up to their public responsibilities to the students and community.

Putin's Russia Life in a Failing Democracy【電子書籍】[ Anna Politkovskaya ]

A searing portrait of a country in disarray and of the man at its helm, from "the bravest of Russian journalists" (The New York Times)

Hailed as "a lone voice crying out in a moral wilderness" (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Here, she turned her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them Vladimir Putin himself.

Rich with characters and poignant accounts*, Putin's Russia* depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sons' bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extra-judicial killings, rape, and torture beget terrorism rather than fighting it. Finally, Politkovskaya denounces both Putin, for stifling civil liberties as he pushes the country back to a Soviet-style dictatorship, and the West, for its unqualified embrace of the Russian leader.

Sounding an urgent alarm, Putin's Russia is a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter, who received death threats and survived assassination attempts for her scathing criticism of the Kremlin. Tragically, on October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and found dead in an elevator in her Moscow apartment building. After several years of investigations, five men were imprisoned for her murder.

Cardiovascular Health How Conventional Wisdom is Failing Us【電子書籍】[ Jay N. Cohn M.D. ]

We all think we are well-informed about cardiovascular health. But is what we think we know really accurate? Here, a renowned cardiologist describes the biological processes leading to heart and blood vessel disease. He challenges the conventional view that risk factors, poor diet, and lack of exercise are the biggest culprits. Each of these widely-described risk factors is individually discussed and Dr. Cohn concludes that their role in affecting cardiovascular health is often overstated. He promotes a greater emphasis on an individual’s personal and largely inherited cardiovascular health by simple assessment of the function and structure of the arteries and heart. By identifying early disease likely to progress he advocates for early intervention, often with drug therapy, to slow disease progression and prevent symptoms of cardiovascular disease.

ThroHe concludes that health care providers can better treat patients with medications that slow the biological processes that contribute to the development of artery and heart disease. These medications lower blood pressure and cholesterol, but their main effect is to slow progression of disease even in those whose blood pressure and cholesterol levels are not elevated. He describes a strategy for identifying and treating these early abnormalities before symptoms develop. Ultimately, early diagnosis and treatment, he argues, can contribute to better prevention and the slowing of cardiovascular disease progression that would otherwise shorten our lives.

Why America Is Failing【電子書籍】[ George Burdette Jr ]

Money
What is money? We spend a very large part of our lives chasing the very thing we know so little of. When we are asked what we do, the answer usually is our occupation, not recreation. We place ourselves at the mercy of a system far removed from our daily lives.
Money is defined as: “something (as metal currency) accepted as a medium of exchange.” Money is freedom, a means to an end, it represents time saved for the participation in the preservation and safeguarding of both. Metal is used as a basis for currency ensures durability, divisibility, and transportability when storing your excess labor in the form of wealth. The value of industry and its fruits are recognized, “by promoting the introduction and circulation of the precious metals, those darling objects of human avarice and enterprise…” 1
Article I. Section 8 Clause 5 of the Constitution authorizes Congress “To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures.” The U.S. Treasury prints paper money with “The Unites States of America” and “Reserve Note” on it. However, “from the pestilent effects of paper money on the necessary confidence between man and man…”, “The power to make anything but gold and silver a tender in payment of debts, is withdrawn from the States, on the same principle with that of issuing paper currency.” 2
For hundreds of years people have been trying to use alchemy to turn lead into gold. The modern equivalent is our servants printing paper money. The Federal Reserve is the agent of circumvention around the intent of the prevention of the existence of a government run bank. This fiat (fake) currency is printed by the U.S. Government for an independent, centralized banking system for distribution; an act that seems to be in clear violation of Article X. of the Bill of Rights, which states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” The authority afforded to the government has already been specifically outlined in the Constitution in reference to currencies. Any additional attempt to control the value of labor will only prove detrimental to the property rights of the citizenry.
This paper currency is transferred to the Federal Reserve, which then places it into the market knowing full well this action will reduce your buying power. This technique has been described as “magical” by participants in the banking system. This magical event is nothing more than using one dollar as collateral to lend nine, which is borrowed and re-lent in a cycle that fabricates counterfeit wealth from nothing more than ones and zeros in the Federal Reserve computers; an event that places you on a type of hamster wheel, for the purpose of creating wealth for those who run the banks, and those who own the stock.

The Supreme Court on Unions Why Labor Law Is Failing American Workers【電子書籍】[ Julius G. Getman ]

Labor unions and courts have rarely been allies. From their earliest efforts to organize, unions have been confronted with hostile judges and antiunion doctrines. In this book, Julius G. Getman argues that while the role of the Supreme Court has become more central in shaping labor law, its opinions betray a profound ignorance of labor relations along with a persisting bias against unions. In The Supreme Court on Unions, Getman critically examines the decisions of the nation’s highest court in those areas that are crucial to unions and the workers they represent: organizing, bargaining, strikes, and dispute resolution.

As he discusses Supreme Court decisions dealing with unions and labor in a variety of different areas, Getman offers an interesting historical perspective to illuminate the ways in which the Court has been an influence in the failures of the labor movement. During more than sixty years that have seen the Supreme Court take a dominant role, both unions and the institution of collective bargaining have been substantially weakened. While it is difficult to measure the extent of the Court’s responsibility for the current weak state of organized labor and many other factors have, of course, contributed, it seems clear to Getman that the Supreme Court has played an important role in transforming the law and defeating policies that support the labor movement.

Communications means failing - Workbook How to build communication bridges【電子書籍】[ Vuran ]

The workbook - Put into practice what you have learned. In this digital age, successful communication has become more important than ever. But why do we fail so often in our conversations?
"She's 22 years old, for heaven's sake! We thought she'd be grown up by now. But no, it's one more crisis after another. And then she calls on usーfor emotional support, problem-solving advice. Even money…although we've gotten pretty tough about that. It's like she's still a teen! Why is it so hard for her just to act like an adult?"

Around age 18, most young people expect, and are expected to, move out and live on their ownーeither at college or in an apartment. But more and more often, "boomerang kids" are returning home defeated, leaving you frustrated and at a loss for how to help them.

In this breakthrough book, Carl Pickhardt, author of Why Good Kids Act Cruel, exposes the hidden period of development that's causing increasing numbers of post-high school and college age kids to fail on their own and tells parents what you can do to fix it. His new approach to understanding young adulthood proposes that 18?to?23 year-olds have reached not adulthood, but a final stage of adolescence called "trial independence."

Boomerang Kids helps parents understand this little-discussed period in your children's lives, so you can help them get through this last and most difficult stage of adolescence and get back out on their own, to become fully, and successfully, independent adults.

In this book, Dr Chaturvedi shares ten personal anecdotes of mistakes and failures and gives a perspective of his interpretation, where he positions failures as a part of the process rather than a definitive outcome. Explaining with humorous caricatures and situations, he demonstrates numerous benefits that arise from such mistakes, why they are important and how they have helped him shape his career.

Even though the mistakes and failures made by Dr Chaturvedi may appear trivial and in-significant when compared to those faced by many others in the general population, they highlight the principles of a very unique and positive perspective that may be applied in mistakes and failures of greater magnitudes as well. This book may serve to be food for thought for many who believe that failures are detrimental and that they should be aggressively avoided and not embraced. It may change their minds to think about failures as steps towards success, by showing how key insights from these failures can be used to empower new skills and opportunities.

Failing Moms Social Condemnation and Criminalization of Mothers【電子書籍】[ Caitlin Killian ]

While many claim that being a mom is the most important job in the world, in reality motherhood in the United States is becoming harder. From preconception, through pregnancy, and while parenting, women are held to ever-higher standards and are finding themselves punished ? both socially and criminally ? for failing to live up to these norms.

This book uncovers how women of all ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses have been interrogated, held against their will, and jailed for a rapidly expanding list of offenses such as falling down the stairs while pregnant or letting a child spend time alone in a park, actions that were not considered criminal a generation ago. While poor mothers and moms of color are targeted the most, all moms are in jeopardy, whether they realize it or not. Women and mothers are disproportionately held accountable compared to men and fathers who do not see their reproduction policed and almost never incur charges for “failure to protect.” The gendered inequality of prosecutions reveals them to be more about controlling women than protecting children.

Using a reproductive justice lens, Caitlin Killian analyzes how and why mothers are on a precipice and what must change to prevent mass penalization and instead support mothers and their children.

21st-Century Virtues How They Are Failing Our Democracy【電子書籍】[ Lucinda Holdforth ]

Authenticity. Vulnerability. Humility. Transparency. These are some of the 21st-century virtues proselytised by mindset gurus, paraded (if not practised) by big corporations, and lauded by professionals on LinkedIn. The quest for authenticity, for example, is central to progressive campaigns for greater diversity and inclusion, while our political and business leaders are highest praised if they appear to be humble. But are Australia’s newest virtues fit for purpose?

In this provocative book, Lucinda Holdforth questions the new orthodoxy. She suggests that these virtues are not only unhelpfully subjective and self-referential but also, in the absence of broader civic values, fail to serve our democracy. This matters when experience around the world, especially in the United States, shows us that no democracy is guaranteed.

Holdforth reminds us that arguments for transparency and authenticity are routinely used by totalitarian regimes to justify ultra-nationalism, artistic censorship and population surveillance. Vulnerability may be a facet of the human condition but that is surely no reason to make it an aspiration. Well-meaning people may talk about the power of ‘my’ truth, but if pushed too far this risks a dissolution of agreed facts and shared reality, breaking down the decision-making processes essential to effective democracy.

If we agree that Australia needs confident, rational, optimistic and outward-looking citizens to shape our future, then Holdforth challenges us to reconsider the contemporary virtues shaping our society.

Red Line American Foreign Policy in a Time of Fractured Politics and Failing States【電子書籍】[ P. J. Crowley ]

Over the past quarter century, four consecutive American presidentsーtwo Democrat, two Republicanーhave spent more time, diplomatic capital, and military resources on Iraq than any other country in the world. Much as the Vietnam syndrome cast a long shadow over American security policy in the decades after the end of the Vietnam War, Iraq provides the commanding narrative for this generation of American leaders. In this book, former Deputy Secretary of State P. J. Crowley, one of America’s most insightful national security commentators, unpacks the legacy of American triumphs and failures in Iraq . He argues that presidents have fallen victim to the Iraq Syndromeーthe disconnect between politics, policy, strategy, and narrativeーthat has hampered America’s foreign policy in the Middle East and hotspots throughout the world. In order to maintain America’s global leadership role, Crowley argues that the next president must realign American’s national security politics, policies, strategies, and narrative for the long term.

Prisonomics Behind Bars in Britain's Failing Prisons【電子書籍】[ Vicky Pryce ]

In March 2013, Vicky Pryce was sentenced to eight months in prison for accepting her ex-husband's penalty points on her driving licence some ten years earlier. After a very public trial, she was sent first to the notorious Holloway and then to East Sutton Park, an open prison in Kent. Inside, she kept a diary documenting her views and experiences; from this diary, Prisonomics was born. Faced with the realities of life behind bars and inspired by the stories of the women she met, Pryce began to research the injustices she found within the prison system. In this informed and important critique, she draws upon her years of experience in economics to call for radical reform and seeks to change how we look at crime and punishment. Prisonomics is not only a personal account of Pryce's experience in prison. It is also a compelling analysis of both the economic and the very human cost of keeping women behind bars.
