Failing Universities How Higher Education Became a Commodity and What We Can Do About It【電子書籍】[ Howard Karger ]
|

Colleges and universities were once places where students came to learn, experts, intellectuals, and others came to teach, and where knowledge was created. Today, America's higher education system is severely compromised by commodification and corporatization, which have transformed higher education into a marketplace. This book examines the effects of these transformations, providing a comprehensive critique of the problems the sector faces.

It outlines how higher education's commodification has impacted areas including affordability, access, waste, hierarchal administrative structures, faculty governance, the college sports industrial complex, and status and social mobility based on institutional prestige. The authors explore alternative policy solutions and examples of systems of higher education that are both effective and cost-effective. They propose a forward-looking agenda for structural reform that is less expensive and more educationally sound than the current model. Emphasising social cohesion, sustainability, a respect for diversity and an understanding of democracy and democratic principles, Failing Universities offers alternative solutions for US higher education to return to its basic mission.

Why Eating Less and Exercising More Makes You Fat Current Health Advice is Failing Us - Learn the Four Fundamentals For Burning Fat and Getting Healthy【電子書籍】[ Stephanie J Moore ]
|

Health care professionals and fitness experts constantly tell people who want to lose weight they should eat less and exercise more. Counting calories and eating low fat food while spending hours at the gym has become a modern day dogma for weight loss, but such advice is profoundly flawed and clearly not working. This book explains in a clear and accessible way, why this seemingly logical advice fails most people over and over again.

This book is a culmination of Stephanie’s years of training and experience along with personal experimentation to understand the true cause of weight gain, or more precisely fat gain, and the mechanisms with which you can re-set your body into being a fat-burner and not a fat-storer. Stephanie shares with you a system of interventions based on science to trigger fat burning and regulate appetite control, which leads to permanent fat loss and food freedom. This includes why blood sugar management is fundamental to long-term health and weight loss; how to exercise less to burn more fat; the surprising importance of a healthy gut microbiome ? the 100 trillion bacteria that live in your gut and their influence on your weight, and why intermittent fasting is one of the quickest and easiest ways to restore the body to a fat-burning machine.

Failing States, Collapsing Systems BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence【電子書籍】[ Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed ]
|

This work executes a unique transdisciplinary methodology building on the author’s previous book, A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization: And How to Save it (Pluto, 2010), which was the first peer-reviewed study to establish a social science framework for the integrated analysis of crises across climate, energy, food, economic, terror and the police state. Since the 2008 financial crash, the world has witnessed an unprecedented outbreak of social unrest in every major continent. Beginning with the birth of the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, the eruption of civil disorder continues to wreak havoc unpredictably from Greece to Ukraine, from China to Thailand, from Brazil to Turkey, and beyond. Yet while policymakers and media observers have raced to keep up with events, they have largely missed the biophysical triggers of this new age of unrest ? the end of the age of cheap fossil fuels, and its multiplying consequences for the Earth’s climate, industrial food production, andeconomic growth. This book for the first time develops an empirically-ground theoretical model of the complex interaction between biophysical processes and geopolitical crises, demonstrated through the analysis of a wide range of detailed case studies of historic, concurrent and probable state failures in the Middle East, Northwest Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Europe and North America. Geopolitical crises across these regions, Ahmed argues, are being driven by the proliferation of climate, food and economic crises which have at their root the common denominator of a fundamental and permanent disruption in the energy basis of industrial civilization. This inevitable energy transition, which will be completed well before the close of this century, entails a paradigm shift in the organization of civilization. Yet for this shift to result in a viable new way of life will require a fundamental epistemological shift recognizing humanity’s embeddedness in the natural world. For this to be achieved, the stranglehold of conventional models achieved through the hegemony of establishment media reporting ? dominated by fossil fuel interests ? must be broken. While geopolitics cannot be simplistically reduced to the biophysical, this book shows that international relations today can only be understood by recognizing the extent to which the political is embedded in the biophysical. Although the book offers a rigorous scientific analysis, it is written in a clean, journalistic style to ensure readability and accessibility to a general audience. It will contain a large number of graphical illustrations concerning oil production data, population issues, the food price index, economic growth and debt, and other related issues to demonstrate the interconnections and correlations across key sectors.

Dropsy, Dialysis, Transplant A Short History of Failing Kidneys【電子書籍】[ Steven J. Peitzman ]
|

Small and bean shaped, the kidneys are sophisticated organs that filter waste from the blood. A number of diseases and disordersーincluding diabetes and hypertensionーcan harm the kidneys and cause them to fail.

Historian and nephrologist Steven J. Peitzman traces the medical history of kidney disease alongside the personal experience of illness. Drawing on diaries, letters, literary narratives, and scientific writings, Peitzman charts the triumphs of medical innovators like Richard Bright, Thomas Addis, and Belding Scribner as well as the stories of persons, famous and not, who have struggled with the disease.

Conditions once known as "Bright’s Disease" are now recognized as complex disorders with names such as glomerulopathy and acute tubular necrosis. Treatments have evolved from abdominal tapping and dietetics to hemodialysis and transplantation. Medical advances have improved the well-being and prognosis of persons with failing kidneys. Yet such persons continue on an arduous journey of chronic illness. Peitzman travels with them, from diagnosis to treatment, and witnesses their remarkable ability to cope.

Joining the clinician’s perspective with the historian’s analysis, this fascinating chronicle offers insight into how diseases are defined, categorized, and understood and explains current concepts of how kidney disease behaves and how modern therapy works.

Building on Borrowed Time Rising Seas and Failing Infrastructure in Semarang【電子書籍】[ Lukas Ley ]

A timely ethnography of how Indonesia’s coastal dwellers inhabit the “chronic present” of a slow-motion natural disaster

Ice caps are melting, seas are rising, and densely populated cities worldwide are threatened by floodwaters, especially in Southeast Asia. Building on Borrowed Time is a timely and powerful ethnography of how people in Semarang, Indonesia, on the north coast of Java, are dealing with this global warming?driven existential challenge. In addition to antiflooding infrastructure breaking down, vast areas of cities like Semarang and Jakarta are rapidly sinking, affecting the very foundations of urban life: toxic water oozes through the floors of houses, bridges are submerged, traffic is interrupted.

As Lukas Ley shows, the residents of Semarang are constantly engaged in maintaining their homes and streets, trying to live through a slow-motion disaster shaped by the interacting temporalities of infrastructural failure, ecological deterioration, and urban development. He casts this predicament through the temporal lens of a “meantime,” a managerial response that means a constant enduring of the present rather than progress toward a better futureーa “chronic present.”

Building on Borrowed Time takes us to a place where a flood crisis has already arrivedーwhere everyday residents are not waiting for the effects of climate change but are in fact already living with itーand shows that life in coastal Southeast Asia is defined not by the temporality of climate science but by the lived experience of tidal flooding.

Failing Our Veterans The G.I. Bill and the Vietnam Generation【電子書籍】[ Mark Boulton ]
|

Returning Vietnam veterans had every reason to expect that the government would take care of their readjustment needs in the same way it had done for veterans of both World War II and Korea. But the Vietnam generation soon discovered that their G.I. Bills fell well short of what many of them believed they had earned. Mark Boulton’s groundbreaking study provides the first analysis of the legislative debates surrounding the education benefits offered under the Vietnam-era G.I. Bills. Specifically, the book explores why legislators from both ends of the political spectrum failed to provide Vietnam veterans the same generous compensation offered to veterans of previous wars.

Failing Our Veterans should be essential reading to scholars of the Vietnam War, political history, or of social policy. Contemporary lawmakers should heed its historical lessons on how we ought to treat our returning veterans. Indeed, veterans wishing to fully understand their own homecoming experience will find great interest in the book’s conclusions.

Failing Our Veterans The G.I. Bill and the Vietnam Generation【電子書籍】[ Mark Boulton ]
|

The original 1944 G.I. Bill holds a special place in the American imagination. In popular mythology, it stands as the capstone of the Greatest Generation narrative of World War II, a fitting reward for the nation’s heroes. Given the almost universal acclaim afforded the bill, future generations of warriors might well have expected to receive similar remuneration for their sacrifice. But when soldiers of the Vietnam conflict shed their fatigues and returned home to civilian life, they found that their G.I. Bills fell well short of what many of them believed they had earned.

In this first legislative history of the G.I. Bill during the Vietnam Era, Mark Boulton takes the story of veterans’ politics beyond the 1944 G.I. Bill as he seeks to uncover the reasons why Vietnam veterans were less well compensated than their predecessors. In crafting their legislation, both conservative and liberal politicians of the Vietnam era wrestled with fundamental questions about the obligations of American citizenship. What does it mean to serve one’s country? What does society owe those civilians it puts in uniform? Repeatedly, in answering those questions, lawmakers from both ends of the political spectrum found reasons to curb the generosity of the benefits offered.

The G.I. Bills should play a central role in our understanding of the Vietnam veteran’s post-service lives, just as they do for World War II veterans. Taking the story of the G.I. Bills beyond the World War II generation allows for a more complete understanding of the veteran experience in America.

Lost Boys How Education is Failing Young Working-Class Men【電子書籍】[ Alex Blower ]

Since the mid-2000s, consistent commentary from politicians and media outlets in the UK have presented low educational attainment and low aspiration as defining attributes of working-class boys in education. It has often characterised them as misogynistic, aggressive and unwilling to learn. But how true is this?

Combining research, real-life case studies and the author’s experience of navigating school exclusion, this book provides clear recommendations for how to better support the health, wellbeing and vulnerabilities of working-class boys and men through both policy and practice.

Challenging us to reconsider ideas about the role of masculinity in the lives of working-class boys and men, the book asks what would change if, instead of focusing on perceived individual failures, we considered the troubled relationship between working-class boys and the social and educational systems in which they reside.

Girls, Interrupted: How Pop Culture is Failing Women【電子書籍】[ Lisa Whittington-Hill ]
|

The past decade has seen a rise in documentaries, memoirs and podcasts that revisit the legacies of women wronged by pop culture. With movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp challenging long-standing narratives around female celebrities, it’s no surprise so many believe the representation of women in the media has improved. In her scathingly witty collection of essays, Girls, Interrupted: How Pop Culture is Failing Women, Lisa Whittington-Hill argues otherwise. Pop culture’s treatment of women, writes Whittington-Hill, is still marked by misogyny and misunderstanding. From the gender bias in celebrity memoir coverage to problematic portrayals of middle-aged women and the sexist pressure on female pop stars to constantly reinvent themselves, Girls, Interrupted critically examines how mainstream media keeps failing women and explores what we can do to fix it. A work of searing relevance, this candid and often cathartic debut marks Whittington-Hill as a cultural critic of the first rank.

There he stumbled across two South African brothers who had founded a business to help unbanked smallholder farmers receive mobile payments in a market where cash was king. After convincing his retired parents to mortgage their house and lend him $100,000, Mike joined as a co-founder of Zoona and became CEO for nine of the next ten years.

With his partners, Mike built a network of more than 3,000 entrepreneur agents across Zambia and Malawi that enabled millions of unbanked consumers to send and receive $2.5-billion in money transfers and remittances. Zoona faced tremendous adversity along the way: currency crises, investment round collapses, ruthless pushback from the major mobile network operators, and a continuous internal struggle to discover and execute a growth strategy that matched the company's billion-dollar ambition. It was by failing to win that Mike learned what entrepreneurship - specifically purpose-driven entrepreneurship - is all about, and it was what motivated him to double down and try again.

"This raw, honest account is a must-read for anyone thinking about starting a company and for every entrepreneur who feels alone in the journey."

- Elizabeth Yin, Co-Founder & General Partner of Hustle Fund

"Startups are hard. And Now Let's Move Into a Time of Nonsense Why Worship Songs are Failing the Church【電子書籍】[ Nick Page ]

Have you ever felt frustrated with the words of the worship songs that we sing? Why are they so forgettable? Why are they filled with such weird language? Where have all the writers gone?

Combining humour with strong argument, Nick Page analyses how worship song writers have bought into a disposable, 'pop-song' model; how they have filled their songs with a kind of semi-Biblical code and how songs suffer from poor technique and a lack of specialist lyric writers. Above all it encourages writers to really think about the words of their songs and whether they really communicate truth about God - truth which should lead to worship. Passionate, controversial and laugh-out-loud funny, this is essential reading for Christians today.

Out of Her Mind How We Are Failing Women's Mental Health and What Must Change【電子書籍】[ Linda Gask ]
|

For centuries so called 'difficult women' have been labelled as 'hysterical' and 'out of their minds'. Today they wait longer for health diagnoses, often being told it's 'all in their heads'. Although healthcare systems are overburdened, why are women the first to feel the effects of this? Why is it so hard for women to find the kind of help they need? Why is no one listening to them? And why have so many lost faith in mental healthcare? Drawing on the lived experiences of women, alongside expert commentators, recent history, current events, and her own personal and professional experience, Dr Linda Gask explores women's mental healthcare today. In doing so she confronts her role as a psychiatrist, recalling experiences treating women and as a woman who has received mental healthcare, illustrating the dire need for more change, faster. Women can't all be out of their minds.

|

America is having a nervous breakdown. Its national character has fragmented. Americans no longer stand united, and they never will again. They are at each other's throats. What happened? What went wrong? This is the strange tale of how America is being destroyed by its conflicting character types. Even worse, this is a problem that cannot be resolved. There is no "one-size-fits-all" set of policies that can accommodate character types that seek radically different things. This makes consensual government impossible. Oswald Spengler, in his apocalyptic masterpiece "The Decline of the West", wrote, "2000-2200: Formation of Caesarism. Victory of force politics over money. Increasing primitiveness of political forms. Inward decline of the nations into a formless population, and Constitution thereof as an imperium of gradually increasing crudity of despotism." America, with the advent of Donald Trump, has entered its Caesarian period. Things will never be the same again.

Rescue Your Failing Brain Before It's Too Late! Optimize All Hormones. Increase Oxygen and Stimulation. Steady Blood Sugar. Decrease Inflammation. Improve Immunity. Heal Leaky Gut. Swartz M.D. ]

In this book, “RESCUE YOUR FAILING BRAIN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!” you will learn simple action steps to prevent and reverse brain degeneration. It is easy to ignore subtle signs of mental deterioration. But if you don’t take action now, sooner or later you may end up with serious cognitive issues like my mother, who was found by the neighbors wandering around naked in the middle of the night. Act now, before it is too late! We have been taught to believe that nothing can be done once you get Alzheimer’s disease. If told that you have it, you are counseled to get your affairs in order now while you can still make decisions, because you will not be able to make decisions as the disease progresses. Unfortunately, this advice is still being given out. But, it does not have to be true. There is something that we can do. Alzheimer’s disease is not only preventable, but is also reversible, especially in the early stages. Individualized programs can be developed to specifically address each person’s problem areas. We can identify and address the causes. Many of these causes revolve around diet and lifestyle. Common causes include antibiotic use, prediabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. If no action is taken now, your symptoms will probably progress over time. If you notice that you are losing your memory abilities, think about how long you have noticed this and think how much it has progressed over the last year or over the last two years. This is a clue to how fast the brain degeneration is happening. You may notice that the degeneration is speeding up as time goes on. Next year will be even faster. Waiting until your memory declines even further is the worst thing that you can do. This is the mistake made by standard-of-care health care. If you notice symptoms, you must take matters into your own hands and not depend on your primary-care physician to act. If you are determined to get your brain working better, it won’t be hard. With diligent application of the strategies that you will learn in this book, your brain will reverse gears, bursting out of the sickening downhill slide of memory, mood, cognition, energy, and digestion, and into the recovery of lost abilities. Follow the advice given in this book to stop your brain from degenerating further and to begin to rehabilitate your lost brain health. Learn how to prevent and reverse the progression of dementia and other cognitive problems in yourself and in your loved ones.
