Why International Cooperation is Failing How the Clash of Capitalisms Undermines the Regulation of Finance【電子書籍】[ Thomas Kalinowski ]

Since the global financial crisis of 2008/09, international cooperation has failed to curb volatile financial markets. Changes in the global rules of finance discussed in the G20 during the last decade remain limited, and it is uncertain whether they are suitable to help mitigate and manage future crises to come. This book offers an alternative to the popular notion that this failure is the result of the 'nature' of the international system, the clash of national egoisms, or lack of leadership. It instead investigates problems of international cooperation by looking at their deeper structural origins in the competition of different models of capitalism. US finance-led, EU integration-led, and East Asian state-led capitalism complement each other globally but have conflicting preferences on how to regulate international finance. This interdependence of capitalist models is relatively stable but also prone to crises caused by volatile financial flows, global economic imbalances, and 'currency wars'. By bringing together approaches from International Political Economy and Comparative Capitalism, this book shows that regulating international finance is not a technocratic exercise of fine-tuning the machinery of international institutions, but rather a political process. International cooperation can only be successful if it goes hand in hand with deep domestic changes in each of these capitalist models.

Joe Biden Tweets During the First Year of His Failing Presidency, Volume One Reversing Trump, while Dividing and Destroying America, January through June 2021【電子書籍】[ Gary F. Zeolla ]

Joseph R. Biden Jr. was inaugurated as President of the United States (POTUS) on January 20, 2021. In his inauguration speech, Biden gave glowing remarks about his goal being to unite America and to “Build Back Better.” But in fact, his main goal seems to have been to reverse everything his predecessor, Donald J. Trump, accomplished during his four years as President. Never mind if a policy was benefiting America, if Trump did it, it had to be reversed. This reversal of Trump’s policies did little to unite and benefit America. Instead, Biden’s policies began alienating the half of Americans who supported Trump for those very policies. By reversing Trump’s beneficial policies, Biden began destroying America, as his presidency began to be failing. Biden’s early actions also set the stage for more failures later in his presidency, so it is important to remember them. On the day Biden was inaugurated, he took over the @POTUS account on Twitter and began tweeting profusely. His tweets promoted his “Build Back Better” policies. But with them being a reversal of Trump’s policies, they were often subtle attacks on Trump and his supporters. This two-volume set reproduces Biden’s tweets for the first year of his presidency. It also includes my comments I posted on Twitter in response to his tweets. Some of my comments were added later and reflect later developments. I have also added an occasional “Extended Comment” to provide further context and commentary to some tweets. This Volume One of this two-volume set records all of Biden’s tweets from January 20, 2021 to the end of July 2021. Volume Two will cover his tweets from the beginning of August 2021 to January 20, 2022.

Searching for Hope Life at a Failing School in the Heart of America【電子書籍】[ Matthew Tully ]

“A gritty, wonderfully honest investigation of life in an urban American high school in the 21st Century.” ーJay Mathews, Washington Post education columnist

Searching for Hope is a gripping account of life in a once-great high school in a rough Indianapolis neighborhood. Granted unfiltered access to Manual High throughout an entire school year, award-winning journalist Matthew Tully tells the complex story of the everyday drama, failures, and triumphs in one of the nation’s many troubled urban public high schools. He walks readers into classrooms, offices, and hallways, painting a vivid picture of the profound academic problems, deep frustrations, and apathy that absorb and sometimes consume students, teachers, and administrators. Yet this intimate view also reveals the hopes, dreams, and untapped talents of some amazing individuals. Providing insights into the challenges confronting those who seek to improve the quality of America’s schools, Tully argues that school leaders and policy makers must rally communities to heartfelt engagement with their schools if the crippling social and economic threats to cities such as Indianapolis are to be averted.

“[W]hile the book offers no unfamiliar insight into the plight of urban schools, it does give a powerful, ultimately genuine voice to the complicated, imperfect individuals whose victories and hopes are often unreported.” ーPublishers Weekly

“[T]his keen observation of teens at a troubled high school makes for fascinating reading.” ーLibrary Journal

Failing Up A Professor's Odyssey of Flunking, Determination, and Hope【電子書籍】[ Barbara Hong, Ph.D. ]

KIRKUS STAR REVIEW--Failing Up was recognized as one of only 2% of books reviewed to earn a Kirkus STAR--the most prestigious designation in the book industry in awarding books of exceptional merit.
"An absorbing, eye-opening narrative about the value of grit and education, sure to inspire a wide audience."
In this stunning debut memoir, Hong recounts her exceptional transformation from floundering student to flourishing professor. Born in Singapore to an uneducated mother and an alcoholic, abusive father, Hong grew up in severe poverty. She attended school against her parents' wishes. Despite her intellectual curiosity, she consistently failed her subjects because she couldn't keep up with the fast-paced, competitive, shame-inducing educational style.

Hong's eloquent present-tense narration animates scenes of family strife and academic struggle and evokes an astounding range of emotions--commiseration, frustration, and eventually elation. Something is always developing, whether it's the narrator herself or the plot.

Though the memoir charts the author's intellectual growth, it also considers complex family relationships, poverty, Southeast Asian culture and education, disability, and determination. Hong demonstrates, through her own experiences, the pleasures and rewards of scholarship and effective teaching, and her account underscores how ordinary people can have life-changing effects on others.

To read the full review, visit: kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/barbara-hong/failing-up/

In this new edition we will be introduced to the interplay of these facets and how they can help and in some cases hinder our schools, our teachers, and our students from thriving. We also learn why it is more complicated now than ever, and the stakes are even higher than when Hidden Dangers was originally published back in 2008.

Normative Intermittency A Sociology of Failing Social Structuration【電子書籍】[ Gregor Fitzi ]

This book addresses the manifold crisis of current societies and understands it as a failure of normative social structuration. As an exemplar for this development, it analyses the decline of welfare state models and the corresponding societal compromise. Yet, it evaluates them as a symptom of a wider malaise of normative orders in complex societies. The question thus arises as to how social science can study the ongoing societal transformation. The book frames the phenomenon as ‘normative intermittency’ to capture its fluid alternation of social structuration and destructuration and develops its analysis in three steps: first, it draws a theoretically reflected symptomatic of its occurrences; it then establishes the sociological diagnosis necessary to understand its unfolding and finally evaluates its political outcomes. Methodologically, the book advocates a complete overhaul of the analytical frames of sociology to gauge the intermittent rhythm of the ongoing societal transformation. Thus, it develops an innovative reading of classical sociological theory beyond a number of unreflected axiomatic assumptions of the current sociological mainstream. Thanks to the assessment of the political outcomes of failing social structuration the book turns to a discussion of the development of possible emancipation paths in the form of ‘transformative social action’; reflexively, this accounts for the results of the sociological diagnosis of the crisis of normative social orders. The main analyses within the book scrutinise a number of empirical phenomena that establish normative intermittency in current societies and refer to the major debates that are taking place on the related topics in the state of art of sociological and political theory.

SLAVE SCHOOLS: Why Are Black Students Held in Bondage of Failing Schools? A Guidebook for Parents and Policymakers【電子書籍】[ Armand A. Fusco Ed.D. ]

SLAVE SCHOOLS WHY ARE BLACK STUDENTS HELD IN BONDAGE OF FAILING (SLAVE) SCHOOLS? Abstract This book is unique because it’s two books in one: Pt I includes all minorities to 2012; Pt II concentrates on black issues between 2012 to 2024 encompassing the racial agenda known as Critical Race Theory based on past slavery. However, it omits white slavery that started sooner, lasted longer and it was cheaper to buy white slaves than black slaves. More striking is that absolutely no mention is made of present-day bondageーslavery--where blacks are required by law to attend failing City Schools. Although there have been national and state reforms to close the achievement gap between blacks and whites none had succeeded. Among the efforts to do so is to eliminate meritocracyーmeasurementsーand without testing there is no gap to measure. Another effort is simply to lower standards which 37 states have done. Furthermore, to hide the problem is introducing a major disruptor that does nothing to improve academic achievement such as the racial agenda that is causing money woes, chaos and conflict among parents and school officials. In its extreme form the concept is infused in every school subject K-12 requiring indoctrination rather than education. That’s the real issue causing the conflict. The problem is vividly illustrated with on the 2022 NAEP results with 75% of students below proficiency in math and 67% below in reading with blacks at 16%. Then followed by test two states, the Connecticut Enigma; and the simple solution with the Mississippi Miracle. Very important is a step-by-step approach to show what blacks can do to bring pressure on school officials and school boards to close or turnaround failing schools by kneeling and striking. When all else fails, then do the school board nightmare.

Failing Our Fathers Confronting the Crisis of Economically Vulnerable Nonresident Fathers【電子書籍】[ Ronald B. Mincy ]

Maligned as "deadbeat dads" or sexually and financially irresponsible inner-city fathers and overlooked in discussions of poverty and family policy, economically vulnerable nonresident fathers are a greatly misunderstood population. Failing Our Fathers summarizes the most recent quantitative and qualitative research, and undertakes new analyses to fill in important gaps, to produce a comprehensive picture of who these fathers are, what types of relationships they have with their families and children, and the challenges they face meeting what their loved ones and taxpayers expect from them. The great majority of these men see their children on a regular basis, despite the financial, legal, and extra-legal barriers they face. Besides requiring fathers to support their children, we must enable them to do so by supplementing their earnings and supporting their co-parenting, in ways that parallel how we require and enable vulnerable single mothers to support their children. The book lays out specific reforms required to achieve this goal as well as tips for those resources for economically vulnerable nonresident fathers.

Never Enough for Yourself: The Fear of Being Seen, the Fear of Failing, and the Anxiety That Keeps You Paralyzed【電子書籍】[ Walter L. Joyce ]

For those caught in the relentless grip of self-doubt, there is a silent, ever-present fear that keeps them from moving forward. A fear of being seen, of showing their true selves to the worldーcoupled with a constant, nagging anxiety about failing. These emotions don't just hinder progress; they paralyze, keeping you locked in a cycle of inaction, constantly second-guessing, and unable to move toward your goals with confidence.

Never Enough for Yourself dives deep into this paralyzing fear, providing an insightful exploration of the psychological factors at play. It uncovers how the fear of exposureーthe anxiety that accompanies the idea of being judged or scrutinizedーprevents people from living authentically. This book takes a hard look at why we avoid being seen for who we truly are, how we sabotage our own potential, and the cost of living in this self-imposed hiding.

Throughout this book, readers will gain a clear understanding of how the fear of failure and the overwhelming sense of never being "enough" keep them locked in a state of constant self-doubt. The narrative doesn't just highlight the problem; it dissects the internal dialogue, offering a clear map of the mind's constant battle between ambition and insecurity. It challenges the idea that failure is something to be avoided at all costs and shows how this mindset actually limits growth.

Each chapter is dedicated to unmasking a layer of fear that holds people backーfear of being judged, fear of being vulnerable, fear of not measuring up. By dissecting the nuances of these fears, the book reveals how they quietly dictate actions, keeping the individual from taking risks or stepping into new opportunities. The narrative brings light to the fact that these fears are often rooted in deeper insecurities, learned behaviors, and societal expectations that have been internalized over time.

What becomes clear is that the anxiety driving these fears isn't merely about the fear of external judgment or failure. It is a fear rooted in the very core of self-worth. The idea of never being enough creates a deep sense of inadequacy, which further reinforces the cycle of avoidance and paralysis. The book shows how individuals are caught in this loop, never quite able to embrace their full potential because they are trapped in a state of constant self-criticism.

Through real-life examples and insightful analysis, Never Enough for Yourself shows how fear manifests in various aspects of lifeーfrom work to relationships, from creativity to self-expression. The constant pressure to prove oneself, to meet expectations, and to avoid mistakes, prevents people from taking the necessary steps toward success. The book explores how even those with apparent outward success can be secretly drowning in their own insecurities, afraid that any misstep will expose their inadequacies.

But the book does not leave readers in this state of helplessness. It also provides practical guidance for how to break free from these fears and anxieties. Through a series of exercises and strategies, it empowers readers to challenge the beliefs that fuel their self-doubt. The book encourages shifting the focus away from perfection and external validation to self-compassion and acceptance. It offers tools to help readers confront their fears head-on, allowing them to take the necessary steps toward personal growth and self-empowerment.

What readers will find most valuable is the sense of clarity they will gain from this book. It's not about simply identifying fears but understanding how these fears operate and how to disrupt them. By understanding the mechanisms behind the fear of failure and the anxiety of never being enough, readers can start to shift their mindset and take bold actions without being paralyzed by self-doubt.

The program and abstracts were published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Vol. 15, Supplement 4, September 1983, Academic Press. This Symposium Proceedings consists of three sections. Section I deals with the mechanical factors and their i'nfluence on coronary blood flow in the normal and failing heart. Section II is developed around the area of vascular smooth muscle and the factors that may control it which ultimately play such an important role in the regulation of coronary blood flow. Section III is primarily devoted to the mechanical aspects of the function of the heart in both hypertrophy and failure including the molecular changes in the myocyte, alterations in neural control, and in inotropic responsiveness of the hypertrophied and failing heart. The editors hope that these three areas encompass a significant body of new and ongoing information that will be helpful to those who work in these areas as well as those who treat patients with varying degrees of myocardial failure or with compromised coronary circulations.
