Mixed Family Life in the UK An Ethnographic Study of Japanese-British Families【電子書籍】[ M. Nakamura Lopez ]
|

This book offers a nuanced picture of mixed family life in the UK. Specifically, the book explores how parents from different backgrounds create a place of belonging for their children, while also negotiating difference and attempting to transmit various aspects of their cultures, including religion, hobbies, language and food to their mixed children. Based on data collected from 26 months of fieldwork, the author concludes that the intergenerational transmission of culture, instead of being tied to the idea of "national culture", is actually more organic and fluid, allowing individuals to share their "cultures", from traditions and customs to preferences and habits, with the next generation.

As mixedness increasingly becomes the norm in our global society, the book will be of interest to students and scholars of race, ethnicity and family studies, as well as social workers, school teachers, counsellors, and parents and kin of mixed children.

The Protection of Children (Second Edition): State Intervention and Family Life【電子書籍】[ Robert Dingwall ]
|

This classic study of law and social work in action (by Robert Dingwall, John Eekelaar and Topsy Murray) is based on the most extensive investigation of child abuse and neglect ever carried out in Great Britain. The authors followed the course of numerous cases from the first detection of ill-treatment to the resolution (or otherwise) of the problem. Famous for coining the much-used (and misunderstood) phrase "the rule of optimism," this book is updated with an extensive Postscript from 1995 and a new, 2014 Preface that explains the uneven history of the optimism principle.

The Children of Montana- The Spirit of Life An African American family life goes off-centre when the boxer Lennox Lewis comes to visit.【電子書籍】[ Anne N Iwobi ]
|

Paul, a.k.a. Boy O's love of life is bursting at the seams. Articulate, agile and full of mischievous fun, he sees the potential to enjoy himself in all that he does. His well-heeled life, in Glendale (an imaginary town in Montana), cruises along just nicely. A partial rural and urban community, his equally affluent and poor neighbours, all know Boy O. If they do not, well, he knows them, including the town's chief of police, whom, from time to time, he comes to offer some advice.

Life, takes a delightful and unexpected turn for Boy O, when “Little Ellie" (full name “Ellington”), arrives to live in Boy O's home. A household assiduously run by the discreet, strict, clean and fantastic cook and housekeeper, Mrs Simpkins. Ellie, the daughter of an Afro- American US Ambassador, known affectionately by Ellie, as 'Marmee', cannot effectively carry out her job, involving travelling with a small child in tow, so she begs to elect Jessie, Boy O’s mom, who is a congregation at her church, to act as Ellie's guardian.

A major menace to Boy O's idyllic existence, which threatens to throw his whole happy family set up into total disarray occurs when the boxer Lennox Lewis, known as 'Noxie', comes into town to drum up some business, stays with their family, sustains an injury deliberately inflicted by the children to send him away, becomes ensconced in a bed within their home to convalesce and soon begins a 'phantom affair' with Paul's mother to boot! Ellie and Boy O who at first welcomed him are outraged at Lewis’s gross abuse of their hospitality and prepare for the mother of all battles.

They employ all the dirty tricks in their little possession to knobble the affair and send Knoxie packing. It is this major battle of wits between Noxie and the children with their little friends joining in, including Guy Fawkes that spins the story on a wild and humorous axis. The story climaxes in a funny showdown, when the boxer’s wife, Violet Chang, whom the boxer holds in fear and awe, comes to drag her absent husband back to his life of domesticity and humdrum existence in brash Miami, where he wears the apron rather than the boxer shorts, within the marriage.

Another event which destabilises Boy O’s life and more so, his friend, Monica's, is when her father Jon has an emotional breakdown, barricading himself in their home in an incident that involves the police's special unit. Oddly, Kepple and Ellie, Monica's close friends close in and cocoon Monica, while Boy O becomes inadvertently sidelined from making a contribution as a friend and is badly hurt at the unintended exclusion.

Boy O's life takes on another pleasurable angle when the Irish/Scandinavian Patrick, 'Patty', comes onto the scene. Green at the gills, Patrick is a delightful innocence, a beauty. His contrasting personality makes him Boy O's best friend. They bond very easily and love each other deeply. Patrick's home life is a sad one. On the outside, it looks like he comes from a loving family but his mother, is jealous and secretly cruel to him, behind her husband's back, as in their failing marriage, Patrick's father bestows all his adoration on his lovely son. Patrick, almost martyr-like, accepts his mother's cruelty, secretly understanding with a child's intuition, why his mother behaves so destructively.

The Children of Montana: the Spirit of Life, is a life of chuckles, innate happiness, a secure, idyllic and yet real world.

Revolution in the Bleachers How Parents Can Take Back Family Life in a World Gone CrazyOver Youth Sports【電子書籍】[ Regan McMahon ]
|

A journalist and mother of two athletic kids exposes the physical and emotional dangers of our over-the-top youth sports cultureーand offers practical solutions for positive change.

A decade ago, Joan Ryan’s expos?, Little Girls in Pretty Boxes, changed the way we look at elite sports, namely figure skating and gymnastics. Today, there is another crisis in youth sports. It may affect any child, from the kindergartner on the soccer field to the high school athlete competing for scarce scholarship money. Regan McMahon’s Revolution in the Bleachers is a wake-up call for parents who spend their lives shuttling their kids from one field and practice to the next and wonder what happened to family life.

Have late weeknight practices made family meals a thing of the past?

Do you spend hours in the car each week, driving to games across town (or across the state)?

Do you worry that your kids will miss out (on competitive experiences, college scholarships, and other advantages) if they do not specialize in one sport early on?

Do you feel pressured to have your kids join elite club teams with steep fees and demanding travel schedules?

Do your kids get repetitive stress injuries that necessitate trips to orthopedic surgeons or physical therapists?

Do you miss your non-sports-related vacations as a family?

If so, the good news is, you are not alone. Other parents and kids (and even some coaches) are on your side. And you have a choice. Regan McMahon’s book began as a cover story for the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine. Titled "How Much is Too Much?" it got a tremendous response. Finally, someone had dared to say what many parents were thinking! Parents, kids and coaches responded, prompting McMahon to criss-cross the country, doing interviews and research to find out how deep the problem goes and how to fix it.

In Revolution in the Bleachers, McMahon traces the evolution of the over-the- top youth culture and gives you a practical plan of action to bring balance back to kids’ lives and our families. McMahon’s rallying cry for a revolution in the bleachers could not be more timely or useful for parents trying to do the best for their kids.

The Nature and Dynamics of Family Life【電子書籍】[ Richard Demeritte ]
|

In today’s twenty-first century, we live in a world of perfect means, but confused goals. There is a crisis in the world momentarily, which is unpredictable as politics and uncontrollable as inflation. It is the breakdown of morality and discipline in the home and ultimately the family. Behind this background, the times are confusing and young people everywhere are searching for a standard to believe in, an example to follow and a world they can relate to. In this atmosphere, it is important for the family to preserve society for upcoming youth as the society can only be as strong as the family. Regrettably, as you look around at your fellow human beings, you find it hard to ignore the fact that very few are fulfilled and leading focused lives. Most of them are unable to cope with their problems and the circumstances of daily living. The majority settling for the average, having resigned themselves to, “just getting by.” Acceptance to mediocrity has become a way of life. The feeling of inadequacy causes them to blame society, people, circumstances and surrounding conditions for their failure and disappointments. The idea that people and things control their lives is so ingrained in their thinking that they normally will not respond to logical arguments. There is a growing awareness that if democracy is to survive and its precious strength are not to be strangled by international and internal chaos, then we must get on with the work of constructively analyzing our family system. Our thinking must then be from the concern of quantity, toward attention of quality and from the concept of individuality, toward the concept of interdependence. Planning must be aware of its origin in hope, as hope is nurtured by images of the future that we desire. To refuse to hope is an act of disloyalty against our humanity, as hope is always the future now. To hope is to evoke the future.

Family Life and the Law Under One Roof【
|

This book brings a modern critical approach to bear on the broad range of subjects that used to constitute 'family law.' A key consideration in this collection is the way in which law itself is premised upon, constructing a particular image of the family. By bringing different areas of law together, Probert et al suggest it is possible to explore how differing ideas about 'the family' inform different areas of law. This approach allows Family Life and the Law to analyze the extent to which the law is consistent and/or inconsistent in its concept and treatment of the family across and within disciplines. The book is particularly timely in view of the passage of the Civil Partnership Act 2004, the implications of which reverberate throughout family law and allied disciplines, and the current reconsideration of the position of cohabiting couples.

Freedom Is Not Enough The Moynihan Report and America's Struggle over Black Family Life -- from LBJ to Obama【電子書籍】[ James T. Patterson ]
|

On June 4, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson delivered what he and many others considered the greatest civil rights speech of his career. Proudly, Johnson hailed the new freedoms granted to African Americans due to the newly passed Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act, but noted that "freedom is not enough." The next stage of the movement would be to secure racial equality "as a fact and a result."

The speech was drafted by an assistant secretary of labor by the name of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who had just a few months earlier drafted a scorching report on the deterioration of the urban black family in America. When that report was leaked to the press a month after Johnson's speech, it created a whirlwind of controversy from which Johnson's civil rights initiatives would never recover. But Moynihan's arguments proved startlingly prescient, and established the terms of a debate about welfare policy that have endured for forty-five years.

The history of one of the great missed opportunities in American history, Freedom Is Not Enough will be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand our nation's ongoing failure to address the tragedy of the black underclass.
