Becoming Citizens Family Life and the Politics of Disability【電子書籍】[ Susan Schwartzenberg ]

Following the Second World War, a generation of Seattle parents went against conventional medical wisdom and chose to bring up their children with developmental disabilities in the community. This book presents a stunning visual narrative of thirteen of these remarkable families. With a rich array of interviews, photographs, newspaper clippings, official documents, and personal mementos, photographer Susan Schwartzenberg captures moving recollections of the struggle and perseverance of these parents. Becoming Citizens traces their dogged determination to make meaningful lives for their children in the face of an often hostile system.

Breaking the silence that characterizes the history of disability in the United States, Becoming Citizens is a substantive contribution to social and regional history. It demonstrates the ways in which personal experiences can galvanize communities for political action. The centerpiece of the book is the story of four mothers-turned-activists who coauthored Education for All, a crucial piece of Washington State legislation that was a precursor to the national law securing educational rights for every person with a disability in America.

Becoming Citizens is a deeply compassionate testament to the experience of family life and disability, as it is to the ways in which ordinary citizens become activists. It will be important to anyone interested in disability studies, including teachers, friends, and families of those with disabilities.

Sold People Traffickers and Family Life in North China【電子書籍】[ Johanna S. Ransmeier ]

A robust trade in human lives thrived throughout North China during the late Qing and Republican periods. Whether to acquire servants, slaves, concubines, or childrenーor dispose of unwanted household membersーfamilies at all levels of society addressed various domestic needs by participating in this market. Sold People brings into focus the complicit dynamic of human trafficking, including the social and legal networks that sustained it. Johanna Ransmeier reveals the extent to which the structure of the Chinese family not only influenced but encouraged the buying and selling of men, women, and children.

For centuries, human trafficking had an ambiguous status in Chinese society. Prohibited in principle during the Qing period, it was nevertheless widely accepted as part of family life, despite the frequent involvement of criminals. In 1910, Qing reformers, hoping to usher China into the community of modern nations, officially abolished the trade. But police and other judicial officials found the new law extremely difficult to enforce. Industrialization, urbanization, and the development of modern transportation systems created a breeding ground for continued commerce in people. The Republican government that came to power after the 1911 revolution similarly struggled to root out the entrenched practice.

Ransmeier draws from untapped archival sources to recreate the lived experience of human trafficking in turn-of-the-century North China. Not always a measure of last resort reserved for times of extreme hardship, the sale of people was a commonplace transaction that built and restructured families as often as it broke them apart.

Parents in Recovery Navigating a Sober Family Lifestyle【電子書籍】[ Sarah Allen Benton ]

**"For parents in recovery (PIRs), the process of recovery is so much more than just stopping drug and alcohol abuse.... Parents facing these challenges will feel understood and supported." -**Booklist
“I am just like other parents, except...”

Parents in Recovery is not a book about “how” to parent. It is also not a book about “how” to get sober. Instead, it is meant to be a guide for parents in recovery (PIRs) from substance use disorders that provides insights and strategies for coping with the many unique and not so unique, challenges they may face. It is also intended to give the loved ones and families of PIRs an inside look at this world and explain why certain changes and behaviors are necessary to maintain long-term recovery. Each chapter is an integration of research, the voices of parents in recovery, input from addiction treatment experts, parent recovery wisdom suggestions and the author's past journal accounts. This guidebook can support mothers and fathers in navigating their way through parenting with a sober lifestyle-which includes physical, emotional, social, spiritual, behavioral, environmental, and vocational wellness. It is written for those who have embraced sobriety before, during or after becoming a parent and can serve as a “job-aid” on this journey. Key topics include love and marriage, family systems, work and life balance, self-care, parenting types, sober socializing, coping with hard times, mental health and recovery pride. This book also addresses modern-day challenges, including the use of electronics, social media, career identity, social trends, non-traditional parental roles and living in a post-COVID-19 pandemic world. While many parents feel shame associated with aspects of their addiction, this book emphasizes the gifts and accomplishments of being in recovery and how they positively impact the entire family system.

Unequal Childhoods Class, Race, and Family Life【電子書籍】[ Annette Lareau ]

Class does make a difference in the lives and futures of American children. Drawing on in-depth observations of black and white middle-class, working-class, and poor families, Unequal Childhoods explores this fact, offering a picture of childhood today. Here are the frenetic families managing their children's hectic schedules of "leisure" activities; and here are families with plenty of time but little economic security. Lareau shows how middle-class parents, whether black or white, engage in a process of "concerted cultivation" designed to draw out children's talents and skills, while working-class and poor families rely on "the accomplishment of natural growth," in which a child's development unfolds spontaneouslyーas long as basic comfort, food, and shelter are provided. Each of these approaches to childrearing brings its own benefits and its own drawbacks. In identifying and analyzing differences between the two, Lareau demonstrates the power, and limits, of social class in shaping the lives of America's children.

The first edition of Unequal Childhoods was an instant classic, portraying in riveting detail the unexpected ways in which social class influences parenting in white and African American families. A decade later, Annette Lareau has revisited the same families and interviewed the original subjects to examine the impact of social class in the transition to adulthood.

Bipolar Disorder & Family Life: Practical Solutions for Managing Mood Episodes and Strengthening Family Bonds【電子書籍】[ Babette J. Arnold ]

Living with bipolar disorder is a challenge that extends far beyond the individual diagnosed. It ripples outwards, affecting not only the person struggling with the disorder but also the entire family system. The emotional and psychological toll can be immense, creating confusion, frustration, and often, a sense of isolation for all involved. Families, though supportive at their core, are sometimes left to navigate the unpredictable terrain of manic and depressive episodes without the tools they need to stay connected, informed, and resilient. In "Bipolar Disorder & Family Life," readers are offered a comprehensive guide to understanding the disorder's impact on the family unit and, most importantly, how to cultivate a supportive and healthy environment for both the individual and their loved ones.

The book addresses the complex dynamics of living with bipolar disorder, highlighting the emotional rollercoaster that comes with sudden shifts in mood and behavior. From manic highs, where everything feels possible and unstoppable, to crushing lows that create a sense of hopelessness and despair, the disorder can leave everyone in its wake feeling vulnerable. Families often struggle to comprehend the sudden changes and may not know how best to respond, leading to feelings of helplessness and even tension. But what if this turbulence could be understood? What if families could manage the chaos in a way that strengthens relationships rather than erodes them? This book shows that it's not just possible, but essential.

Through practical, actionable strategies, "Bipolar Disorder & Family Life" equips families with the knowledge and skills needed to foster understanding, communication, and compassion in the face of mood episodes. Instead of focusing solely on the person living with bipolar disorder, the book takes a holistic approach, recognizing the needs of the entire family system. The impact of bipolar disorder on family life isn't isolated to one individual but creates a ripple effect that touches everyoneーfrom the spouse, children, and extended family members to close friends and even colleagues.

Additionally, "Bipolar Disorder & Family Life" offers invaluable guidance on how to deal with the stigma and misunderstandings surrounding bipolar disorder. It's no secret that mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, are often misunderstood and stigmatized. This can add an additional layer of stress and isolation to families already dealing with the complexities of the disorder. The book provides families with the tools to address stigma, educate others, and advocate for themselves and their loved ones in a way that fosters acceptance and compassion.

For families in crisis, the book offers support in navigating the more difficult moments, providing strategies for managing conflict and stress. The reality is that mood episodes can lead to tension, miscommunication, and emotional exhaustion. Families often feel at a loss when they encounter these moments, unsure of how to respond or how to keep the peace. The book addresses these concerns directly, offering clear steps for managing high-stress situations and minimizing emotional fallout.

At its core, "Bipolar Disorder & Family Life" is a guide not just for surviving but for thriving together as a family despite the challenges of living with bipolar disorder. It helps families shift from a place of fear and uncertainty to one of empowerment and resilience. It offers hope to those who feel overwhelmed by the unpredictable nature of the disorder, and it helps families take ownership of their journey by providing them with the knowledge, strategies, and mindset to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Family Life and the Law Under One Roof【

This book brings a modern critical approach to bear on the broad range of subjects that used to constitute 'family law.' A key consideration in this collection is the way in which law itself is premised upon, constructing a particular image of the family. By bringing different areas of law together, Probert et al suggest it is possible to explore how differing ideas about 'the family' inform different areas of law. This approach allows Family Life and the Law to analyze the extent to which the law is consistent and/or inconsistent in its concept and treatment of the family across and within disciplines. The book is particularly timely in view of the passage of the Civil Partnership Act 2004, the implications of which reverberate throughout family law and allied disciplines, and the current reconsideration of the position of cohabiting couples.

To meet demand in Canada, more and more women are migrating from the Philippines to become domestic workers. What happens to family left behind? Tender Labour investigates the experiences of young people as they navigate precarity in all its forms when their mothers work elsewhere.

Jennifer Shaw conducts nuanced research with youth who have been separated from and later reunited with their mothers in Canada, incorporating their own voices through poems, song lyrics, and photographs. She focuses on how their tender labour ? the work they perform within their families ? emerges not only from necessity but also from the stresses and dreams that tug at the threads of kinship.

The role of young people in familial migrations reveals the hard consequences of capitalist extraction of transnational labour. Nonetheless, despite childhoods shaped by economic inequality and racialized disparity, Shaw discovers that these Filipina/o young people keep their hope of a good life.

Family Life in the Seventeenth Century The Verneys of Claydon House【電子書籍】[ Miriam Slater ]

The great issues and conflicts of the early seventeenth century were played out not only on the stages of the Court and Parliament, and, latterly, on the battlefield, but within the confines of the family. Originally published in 1984, in this pioneering study of the Verney family, based on more than 10,000 family letters and papers, Professor Miriam Slater shows how a family of country gentry lived and behaved in a time of political and social crisis. Most of their energies were directed within the family, their concerns with marriage and children, with relationships between members of the Verney clan, with managing their estates and property. They emerge as real people with passions and hatreds, made to live their lives by correspondence when the head of the family was forced to live abroad as an exile and casualty of the political tumults. But their misfortunes have created a unique archive which allows the author to delve deep into the very heart of their personal lives, and to create an extraordinary collective portrait of a family in times of troubles.

Professor Slater describes and analyses the way in which Verney family members actually treated each other, and gives an account of their ideas ? on marriage, from both the male and female points of view; on the roles of children and parents; on the relationships among adult siblings; on the place of servants within the family. She offers a detailed and systematic examination of family psychological dynamics, and the values, attitudes and goals which affected individual behaviour. She also moves beyond individual idiosyncrasies by linking the nature of personal interaction within the family to the wider social structures of the society, including laws of inheritance, patriarchal control, the different treatment of men and women, and financial arrangements and family strategies.
