The Promise of Friendship Fidelity within Finitude【電子書籍】[ Sarah Horton ]
|

Argues that friendship is the gift of a world that is not one's own and that transforms one's world in unforeseeable ways.

The Promise of Friendship investigates what makes friendship possible and good for human beings. In dialogue with authors ranging from Aristotle and Montaigne to Proust, Levinas, and Derrida, Sarah Horton argues that friendship is suited to our finitude-that is, to the limits within which human beings live-and proposes a novel understanding of friendship as translation: friends translate the world for each other so that each one experiences the world not as the other does but in light of the friend's always-unknowable experience. The very distance between friends that makes it impossible for them to know each other wholly also makes it possible for them to be transformed by friendship. Friendship, then, is possible and good for those who love precisely that they can never wholly know the friend. Friendship is a profound, mutual self-giving that highlights the irreplaceability of each person, fundamentally shapes the self, and is one of the greatest joys of human existence.

Ethics and Finitude Heideggerian Contributions to Moral Philosophy【電子書籍】[ Lawrence J. Hatab ]
|

This book explores what anyone interested in ethics can draw from Heidegger's thinking. Heidegger argues for the radical finitude of being. But finitude is not only an ontological matter; it is also located in ethical life. Moral matters are responses to finite limit-conditions, and ethics itself is finite in its modes of disclosure, appropriation, and performance. With Heidegger's help, Lawrence Hatab argues that ethics should be understood as the contingent engagement of basic practical questions, such as how should human beings live?

Arts of Dying Literature and Finitude in Medieval England【電子書籍】[ D. Vance Smith ]
|

People in the Middle Ages had chantry chapels, mortuary rolls, the daily observance of the Office of the Dead, and even purgatoryーbut they were still unable to talk about death. Their inability wasn’t due to religion, but philosophy: saying someone is dead is nonsense, as the person no longer is. The one thing that can talk about something that is not, as D. Vance Smith shows in this innovative, provocative book, is literature.

Covering the emergence of English literature from the Old English to the late medieval periods, Arts of Dying argues that the problem of how to designate death produced a long tradition of literature about dying, which continues in the work of Heidegger, Blanchot, and Gillian Rose. Philosophy’s attempt to designate death’s impossibility is part of a literature that imagines a relationship with death, a literature that intensively and self-reflexively supposes that its very terms might solve the problem of the termination of life. A lyrical and elegiac exploration that combines medieval work on the philosophy of language with contemporary theorizing on death and dying, Arts of Dying is an important contribution to medieval studies, literary criticism, phenomenology, and continental philosophy.

A finitude humana: consci?ncia e nega??o【電子書籍】[ Glaucio Martins ]

Worth Doing Fallenness, Finitude, and Work in the Real World【電子書籍】[ W. David Buschart ]
|

Reimagine Your Theology of Faith and Work

Conversations about faith and work often miss an important truth: limitations are not a problem; they're a key part of what it means to be human. Work has always been part of humanity's purpose, but we're no longer in the perfect Garden of Eden, nor are we in the future new heavens and new earth. To truly address the challenges of work, we need a new theological perspective.

In Worth Doing, David Buschart and Ryan Tafilowski embrace the realities of limitations, challenging the myths of "You are what you do" and "Do what you love." Instead, they propose a theology of work that affirms the goodness of human limits while addressing the realities of fallenness, offering hope for those who may not find deep fulfillment in their daily jobs.

Buschart and Tafilowski outline a new vision of work that resonates with all workers, recognizing that every job has value, even when it doesn't align with idealized notions of purpose or calling. By embracing this perspective, people can find new ways to approach daily labor, even when it doesn't feel deeply fulfilling.

In Worth Doing, readers will:

Gain a theology of work that moves beyond only ideas of productivity or calling.

Learn how to embrace human limitations as part of God's good design.

Reflect on the ways work connects to broader questions of purpose and human flourishing.

Worth Doing invites readers to consider their limitations as valuable aspects of their vocational journey, offering a thoughtful framework for addressing the complexities of work. This book is particularly relevant for theologians examining the intersections of work, faith, and rest; Christian educators; and leaders in the faith and work space. By moving beyond conventional theological approaches to faith and work, Worth Doing presents a hopeful and theologically rich perspective on vocation that acknowledges and embraces human limitations.

Navigating Everyday Life Exploring the Tension between Finitude and Transcendence【電子書籍】[ Peter J. Adams ]
|

Navigating Everyday Life explores the special moments, big and small, that rupture the surface of everyday life and that can help readers adjust to the disrupting effects of major life crises. Peter Adams delves into the two forces, finitude (the aspects that constrain a person to a situation) and transcendence (those aspects that enable movement beyond such constraints). Building on this framework, Adams looks at the processes and circumstances that both facilitate and block the tensions between finitude and transcendence. He then illustrates how these tensions function in the personal and existential challenges faced by five members of a modern suburban family. Their stories traverse life transitions such as separation, depression, chronic illness, injury, violence, addiction, aging, death, and forgiveness. This book is recommended for scholars and others interested in the intersections between psychology and philosophy.

The Kalam Cosmological Argument, Volume 1 Philosophical Arguments for the Finitude of the Past【
|

Did the universe begin to exist? If so, did it have a cause? Or could it have come into existence uncaused, from nothing? These questions are taken up by the medieval-though recently-revived-kalam cosmological argument, which has arguably been the most discussed philosophical argument for God's existence in recent decades. The kalam's line of reasoning maintains that the series of past events cannot be infinite but rather is finite. Since the universe could not have come into being uncaused, there must be a transcendent cause of the universe's beginning, a conclusion supportive of theism.

This anthology on the philosophical arguments for the finitude of the past asks: Is an infinite series of past events metaphysically possible? Should actual infinites be restricted to theoretical mathematics, or can an actual infinite exist in the concrete world? These essays by kalam proponents and detractors engage in lively debate about the nature of infinity and its conundrums; about frequently-used kalam argument paradoxes of Tristram Shandy, the Grim Reaper, and Hilbert's Hotel; and about the infinity of the future.

Embracing Our Finitude Exercises in a Christian Anthropology between Dependence and Gratitude【電子書籍】[ Stephan Kampowski ]
|

Memento mori--remember death--this is how the medieval monks exhort us. Our life, given in birth and taken by death, is radically marked by finitude, which can be a source of great fear and anguish. Our finitude, however, does not in itself need to be something negative. It confronts us with the question of our life's meaning and spurs us on to treasure our days. Our contingency, as evidenced in our birth and death, reminds us that we have not made ourselves and that there is nothing necessary about the marvelous fact that we exist. Particularly from a Judeo-Christian perspective, embracing our finitude will mean gratefully accepting life as a completely gratuitous gift and living one's days informed by a sense of this gratitude.

The Metamorphosis of Finitude An Essay on Birth and Resurrection【電子書籍】[ Emmanuel Falque ]
|

This book starts off from a philosophical premise: nobody can be in the world unless they are born into the world. It examines this premise in the light of the theological belief that birth serves, or ought to serve, as a model for understanding what resurrection could signify for us today. After all, the modern Christian needs to find some way of understanding resurrection, and the dogma of the resurrection of the body is vacuous unless we can relate it philosophically to our own world of experience.

Nicodemus first posed the question "How can anyone be born after having grown old?
Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" This book reads that problem in the context of contemporary philosophy (particularly the thought of Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Deleuze). A phenomenology of the body born "from below" is seen as a paradigm for a theology of spiritual rebirth,
and for rebirth of the body from "on high."

The Resurrection changes everything in Christianityーbut it is also our own bodies that must be transformed in resurrection, as Christ is transfigured. And the way in which I hope to be resurrected bodily in God, in the future, depends upon the way in which I live bodily today.

Biopolitics of Security A Political Analytic of Finitude【電子書籍】[ Michael Dillon ]
|

Taking its inspiration from Michel Foucault, this volume of essays integrates the analysis of security into the study of modern political and cultural theory.

Explaining how both politics and security are differently problematised by changing accounts of time, the work shows how, during the course of the 17th century, the problematisation of government and rule became newly enframed by a novel account of time and human finitude, which it calls ‘factical finitude’. The correlate of factical finitude is the infinite, and the book explains how the problematisation of politics and security became that of securing the infinite government of finite things. It then explains how concrete political form was given to factical finitude by a combination of geopolitics and biopolitics. Modern sovereignty required the services of biopolitics from the very beginning. The essays explain how these politics of security arose at the same time, changed together, and have remained closely allied ever since. In particular, the book explains how biopolitics of security changed in response to the molecularisation and digitalisation of Life, and demonstrates how this has given rise to the dangers and contradictions of 21st century security politics.

This book will be of much interest to students of political and cultural theory, critical security studies and International Relations.

Hope, Trust, and Forgiveness Essays in Finitude【電子書籍】[ John T. Lysaker ]
|

A new ethics of human finitude developed through three experimental essays.

As ethical beings, we strive for lives that are meaningful and praiseworthy. But we are finite. We do not know, so we hope. We need, so we trust. We err, so we forgive. In this book, philosopher John T. Lysaker draws our attention to the ways in which these three capacitiesーhope, trust, and forgivenessーcontend with human limits. Each experience is vital to human flourishing, yet each also poses significant personal and institutional challenges as well as opportunities for growth. Hope, Trust, and Forgiveness explores these challenges and opportunities and proposes ways to best meet them. In so doing, Lysaker experiments with the essay as a form and advances an improvisational perfectionism to deepen and expand our ethical horizons.

Music, Time, and Its Other Aesthetic Reflections on Finitude, Temporality, and Alterity【電子書籍】[ Roger Savage ]
|

Music, Time, and Its Other explores the relation between the enigmatic character of our temporal experiences and music’s affective power. By taking account of competing concepts of time, Savage explains how music refigures dimensions of our experiences through staking out the borderlines between time and eternity. He examines a range of musical expressions that reply to the deficiency born from the difference between time and an order that exceeds or surpasses it and reveals how affective tonalities of works by Bach, Carolan, Debussy, Schoenberg, Messiaen, and Glass augment our understanding of our temporal condition. Reflections on the moods and feelings to which music gives voice counterpoint philosophical investigations into the relation between music’s power to affect us and the force that the present has with respect to the initiatives we take. Music*, Time, and Its Other* thus sets out a new approach to music, aesthetics, politics, and the critical roles of judgment and imagination.

ENCOUNTERS IN A NOISY WORLD - The finitude of eternity If the view of things is different from the hitherto accustomed one, something is formed, which does that service to the well-worn life, the appearance of which does not become aware of its distinctness to everyone. If, nevertheless, wise souls tell each other stories about sensitive people, whose world is a lot quieter than that of the others outside, it seems as if they are completely drawn into the spell of the events, wherever this path leads. Heights & depths crossing the voices sound invites to listen to those whose cry once overheard. Only very few hear their call, which knocks on the border of eternity and asks for admission. Drowned out in this world as well as in the other, that heart only finds rest, whose word purely faces the questions, which life gives it. Each tone interwoven with the finiteness, its sound leads into that connectedness which knows the vastness of the unspeakable. A story of a young man at the limit of his resistance.

Finitude Self, The USA, The Human Species【電子書籍】[ Anton Androv ]
|

This book contains observations, philosophy, and advice from a manufacturing-era engineer at end-oflife. It started as an investigative report on an environmental issue that the author had been working on for more than 30 years: damming of the Great lakes to produce hydro power to be used by politicians to buy votes. It is destroying the Great Lakes, which is 20 % of the earth’s fresh water. However, in doing research for this book, the author stumbled on to a worse threat then ruining the Great Lakes: extinction of the human race. The birth rate in most countries is below replacement and the numbers point to extinction of the human species possibly as soon as 2300. There are too few babies being born. This book details our current problems. All of the USA’s current issues play a role in humanity’s decline: birth circumstance, peace and order, education, economics, health, jobs, etc. The author presents observations in each area, draws conclusions, and proposes solutions. Adoption of actions items may lengthen our finitude. Maybe when the earth’s population gets down to one billion, humans will respond by altering their behaviors and governance to keep themselves, USA’s democracy, and the human species going for a while longer. That is the purpose of this book. Ed.

Intimations of Mortality Time, Truth, and Finitude in Heidegger's Thinking of Being【電子書籍】[ David Farrell Krell ]

|

Heidegger’s thinking has an underlying unity, this book argues, and has cogency for seemingly diverse domains of modern culture: philosophy and religion, aesthetics and literary criticism, intellectual history and social theory. “The theme of mortalityーfinite human existenceーpervades Heidegger’s thought,” in the author’s words, “before, during, and after his magnum opus, Being and Times, published in 1927.” This theme is manifested in Heidegger’s work not “as funereal melodramatics or as despair and destructive nihilism” but rather “as a thinking within anxiety.”

Four major subthemes in Heidegger’s thinking are explored in the book’s four parts: the fundamental ontology developed in Being and Time; the “lighting and clearing” of Being, understood as “unconcealment”; the history of philosophyーwith emphasis on Heraclitus, Hegel, and Nietzscheーinterpreted as the “destiny” of Being; and the poetics of Being, explicated as the “fundamental experience” of mortality.

Neither an introduction nor a survey, this book is a close reading of a wide range of Heidegger’s books, lectures, and articlesーincluding extensive material not yet translated into Englishーinformed by the author’s conversations with Heidegger in 1974*?*76. Each of the four subthemes is treated critically. The aim of the book is to push its interrogations of Heidegger’s thought as far as possible, in order to help the reader toward an independent assessment of his work and to encourage novel, radically conceived approaches to traditional philosophical problems.

Death and Finitude Toward a Pragmatic Transcendental Anthropology of Human Limits and Mortality【電子書籍】[ Sami Pihlstr?m ]
|

Death and Finitude offers an examination and defense of a pragmatic transcendental anthropology applicable to the concepts of limit, finitude, and mortality that are constitutive of human life as we know it. Sami Pihlstr?m develops a special kind of philosophical anthropologyーa pragmatic yet transcendental examination of the human conditionーthat interprets what is worth preserving in the tradition of transcendental philosophy in such a manner that this unusual combination will crucially enrich our understanding of a human problem we all share: mortality.

In some sense, all serious philosophy inevitably reflects on the human condition and is thus philosophical anthropology, broadly conceived. There can hardly be any more serious problem concerning the human condition than the problem of death. Yet, mainstream analytic contributions to the philosophy of death usually addresses death in general, and it is far from obvious that such contributions are philosophically relevant in the sense of addressing the agony of an individual human being trying to understand their own mortal condition. “Continental” philosophy of death may be frustrating in a different sense, as it often fails to be conceptually as clear and argumentatively as rigorous as the analytic literature. Claiming to address my “being-toward-death”, such contributions may also fail to speak to the mortal individual if they end up in endless pseudo-philosophical jargon. It is against this background of frustration that Death and Finitude contributes to humanity’s on-going reflections on death, dying, and mortalityーfrom a pragmatist yet transcendental perspective, seeking to accommodate these topics within a broader philosophical anthropology.

The book is primarily intended for academic philosophers, but the potential readership includes not only scholars but also both graduate students and advanced undergraduates, as well as general educated readers. It is relevant to the concerns of philosophers specializing in transcendental philosophy, philosophical anthropology, pragmatism, Wittgenstein, and the philosophy of religion. As the book may be said to be an attempt to “philosophize historically,” it is in principle of interest to both systematically and historically oriented philosophers and students.

A Finitude Do Ser【電子書籍】[ Davi Roballo ]

|

REUNION IN A NOISY WORLD The finitude of eternity【電子書籍】[ Kati Vo? ]
|

Kati Vo?
