The United States Constitution Foundational Principles of American Democracy: Enlightened Governance and Essential Freedoms【電子書籍】[ United States ]

The United States Constitution stands as a profound testament to the principles of governance and individual rights that have shaped the American political landscape. Written in 1787, the document employs a clear and structured literary style that reflects Enlightenment ideals, emphasizing the balance of power and the importance of a government accountable to its citizens. Through its intricate framework, which includes the Bill of Rights and various amendments, the Constitution engages with themes of liberty, justice, and federalism, making it a pivotal text not only for legal scholars but for anyone interested in the evolution of democratic ideals in the Western world. Drafted by a group of visionary delegates during a time of political upheaval, the Constitution emerged from a desire to create a more unified and effective system than what was provided by the Articles of Confederation. Key figures such as James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin infused their Enlightenment-influenced philosophies into its articles, all while negotiating the contentious issues of their day, including federal authority and individual freedoms, thereby solidifying its place in the annals of history. The United States Constitution is essential reading for those seeking to understand the foundation of American democracy. It invites readers to reflect on the ongoing relevance of its principles in contemporary society and challenges them to consider their role in a participatory government. A must-read for scholars, students, and engaged citizens alike, this enduring document continues to inspire dialogue and promote civic responsibility.

COVID-19, Law & Regulation Rights, Freedoms, and Obligations in a Pandemic【電子書籍】[ Belinda Bennett ]

COVID-19 is the most severe pandemic the world has experienced in a century. This book analyses major legal and regulatory responses internationally to COVID-19, and the impact the pandemic has had on human rights and freedoms, governance, the obligations of states and individuals, as well the role of the World Health Organization and other international bodies during this time. The authors examine notable legal challenges to public health measures enforced during the pandemic, such as lockdown orders, curfews, and vaccine mandates. Importantly, the book contextualizes the legal analysis by examining the broader social and economic dimensions of risks posed by the pandemic. The book considers how COVID-19 impacted the operation of the criminal justice system, civil litigation concerning negligently caused deaths and business losses arising from contractual breaches, consumer protection litigation, disciplinary regulation of health practitioners, coronial inquests and other investigations of unexpected deaths, and occupational health and safety issues. The book reflects on the role of the law in facilitating the remarkable scientific and epidemiological achievements during the pandemic, but also the challenges of ensuring the swift production and equitable distribution of treatments and vaccines. It concludes by considering the possibilities that the legal and regulatory responses to this pandemic have illuminated for effectively tackling future global health crises.

Manufacturing Freedom Sex Work, Anti-Trafficking Rehab, and the Racial Wages of Rescue【電子書籍】[ Elena Shih ]

Sex worker rescue programs have become a core focus of the global movement to combat human trafficking. While these rehabilitation programs promise freedom from enslavement and redemptive wages for former sex workers, such organizations actually propagate a moral economy of low?wage women’s work that obfuscates relations of race, gender, national power, and inequality. Manufacturing Freedom is an ethnographic exploration of two American organizations that offer vocational training in jewelry production to women migrants in China and Thailand as a path out of sex work. In this innovative study, Elena Shih argues that anti?trafficking rescue and rehabilitation projects profit off persistent labor abuse of women workers and imagined but savvily marketed narratives of redemption.

Freedoms, Faiths and Futures Teenage Australians on Religion, Sexuality and Diversity【電子書籍】[ Andrew Singleton ]

How do contemporary teenagers experience and understand religious, spiritual, gender and sexual diversity? How are their experiences mediated by where they go to school, their faith and their geographic location? Are their outlooks materialist, religious, spiritual, or do they have hybrid identities?

Freedoms, Faiths and Futures: Teenage Australians on Religion, Sexuality and Diversity offers powerful insight into how teenagers make sense of the world around them. Drawing on rich data from a major national study, this book creates new ways of understanding the complexity of young people's lives and how school education covering diversity best addresses their world.

This book argues that school education focused on worldviews is founded on ways of thinking about young people that do not reflect the complexities of Generation Z's everyday experiences of diversity and their interactions with each other. It argues that certain kinds of education in schools can play a significant role in developing religious literacy, tolerance and positive attitudes to diversity.

Freedoms of Speech Anthropological Perspectives on Language, Ethics, and Power【

Bringing together leading anthropologists, this collection sheds light on the vast topic of freedoms of speech from a comparatively human perspective. Freedoms of Speech provides a sustained, empirical exploration of the variety of ways freedom of speech is lived, valued, and contested in practice; envisioned as an ideal; and mediated by various linguistic, ethical, and material forms.

From Ireland to India, from Palestine to West Papua, from contemporary Java to early twentieth-century Britain, and from colonial Vietnam to the contemporary United States, the book broadly interrogates the classic vision of a singular “Western liberal tradition” of freedom of speech, exploring its internal complexities and highlighting alternative perspectives on the relationship between speech, freedom, and constraint in other times and places. Chapters analyse subjects commonly linked to freedom-of-speech debates, shedding new light on familiar topics that include campus speech codes, defamation, and press freedom, while also exploring unexpected ones such as therapy, gift-giving, and martyrdom. These analyses not only provide unexpected perspectives and unique insights but also address a myriad of questions, contributing to a rich, interdisciplinary, and human understanding of the nature of freedom of speech.

Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood The Impacts of New Freedoms and New Responsibilities【電子書籍】[ Jerald G. Bachman ]

Why do some young adults substantially change their patterns of smoking, drinking, or illicit drug use after graduating from high school? In this book, the authors show that leaving high school and leaving home create new freedoms that are linked to increases in the use of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. They also show that marriage, pregnancy, and parenthood create new responsibilities that are linked to decreases in drug use.

The research is based on more than 33,000 young people followed from high school through young adulthood by the nationwide Monitoring the Future project. Every two years, participants reported on their drug use, as well as their schooling, employment, military service, living arrangements, marriages, pregnancies, parenthood, and even their divorces.

The unique qualities of this research--large nationally representative samples, follow-ups extending up to 14 years beyond high school, and multiple approaches to analysis and data presentation--allowed the examination of several important influences simultaneously, while retaining much of the rich detail encountered in the real world. On the whole, the results are encouraging, suggesting that the potentials for change and improvement during the transition to adulthood are as important as the detrimental effects of problem behavior in adolescence. This research is a "must" read for anyone concerned with how new freedoms and responsibilities impact adolescents, young adults, and the use of licit and illicit drugs.

Civil Peace and the Quest for Truth The First Amendment Freedoms in Political Philosophy and American Constitutionalism【電子書籍】[ Murray Dry ]

The freedoms of speech and religion assumed a sacrosanct space in American notions of civil liberty. But it was not until the twentieth century that these freedoms became prominent in American constitutional law; originally, the first ten amendments applied only to the federal government and not to the states. Murray Dry traces the trajectory of freedom of speech and religion to the center of contemporary debates as few scholars have done, by looking back to the American founding and to the classical texts in political philosophy that shaped the founders' understanding of republican government. By comparing the colonial charters with the new state constitutions and studying the development of the federal Constitution, Dry demonstrates the shift from governmental concern for the salvation of souls to the more limited aim of the securing of rights. For a uniquely rich and nuanced appreciation of this shift Dry explores the political philosophy of Locke, Spinoza, Montesquieu, and Mill, among others, whose writings helped shaped the Supreme Court's view of religion as separate from philosophy, as a matter of individual faith and not a community practice. Delving into the polyvalent interpretations of such fundamental concepts as *truth,*faith, and *freedom,*Civil Peace and the Quest for Truth immeasurably advances the study of American constitutional law and our First Amendment rights.

Beyond Collective Memory Structural Complicity and Future Freedoms in Senegalese and South African Narratives【電子書籍】[ Cullen Goldblatt ]

Beyond Collective Memory analyzes how two African places became icons of collective memory for certain publics, yet remain marginal to national and continental memory discourses. Thiaroye, a Senegalese location of colonial-era massacre, and District Six, a South African neighborhood destroyed under apartheid, have epitomized a shared "memory" of racist violence and resistant community. Analyzing diverse cultural texts surrounding both places, this book argues that the metaphor of collective memory has obscured the structural character of colonial and apartheid violence, and made it difficult to explore the complicit positions that structures of violence produce. In investigating the elisions of memory discourses, Beyond Collective Memory challenges the dominance of collective memory, and calls attention to the African pasts, metaphors, and imaginaries that exist beyond it.

The First Freedoms and America's Culture of Innovation The Constitutional Foundations of the Aspirational Society【電子書籍】[ Narain D. Batra ]

This is a book about the dynamics of the aspirational society. It explores the boundaries of permissible thought--deviations and transgressions that create constant innovations. When confronted with a problem, an innovative mind struggles and brings forth something distinctive--new ideas, new inventions, and new programs based on unconventional approaches to solve the problem. But this can be done only if the culture creates large breathing spaces by leaving people alone, not as a matter of state generosity but as something fundamental in being an American. Consequently, the Constitutional mandate of “Congress shall make no law…” has encouraged fearless speech, unrestrained thought, and endless experimentation leading to newer developments in science, technology, the arts, and not least socio-political relations. Most of all, the First Freedoms liberate the mind from irrational fears and encourage an environment of divergent thinking, non-conformity, and resistance to a collective mindset. The First Freedoms encourage Americans to be iconoclastic, to be creatively crazy, to be impure, thus, enabling them to mix and re-mix ideas to design new technologies and cultural forms and platforms, anything from experimental social relations and big data explorations to electing our first black president.

Are there different varieties of freedom?

Are there real and unreal freedoms?

Is freedom a basic human right?

Or is freedom a terribly misused slogan to incite violent rebellions?

Certainly, human survival as a species on Earth trumps getting additional freedom anytime.

Recognizing that freedom is not a panacea for human problems, and does not solve every problem in the world, the way to achieve peace, prosperity, sustainability, and harmony for all is through mutual understanding and collaboration among nations and peoples, and not by fighting ostensibly for freedom with destructive violence or by waging wars.

Gaining Freedoms Claiming Space in Istanbul and Berlin【電子書籍】[ Berna Turam ]

Gaining Freedoms reveals a new locus for global political change: everyday urban contestation. Cities are often assumed hotbeds of socio-economic division, but this assessment overlooks the importance of urban space and the everyday activities of urban life for empowerment, emancipation, and democratization. Through proximity, neighborhoods, streets, and squares can create unconventional power contestations over lifestyle and consumption. And through struggle, negotiation, and cooperation, competing claims across groups can become platforms to defend freedom and rights from government encroachments.

Drawing on more than seven years of fieldwork in three contested urban sitesーa downtown neighborhood and a university campus in Istanbul, and a Turkish neighborhood in BerlinーBerna Turam shows how democratic contestation echoes through urban space. Countering common assumptions that Turkey is strongly polarized between Islamists and secularists, she illustrates how contested urban space encourages creative politics, the kind of politics that advance rights, expression, and representation shared between pious and secular groups. Exceptional moments of protest, like the recent Gezi protests which bookend this study, offer clear external signs of upheaval and disruption, but it is the everyday contestation and interaction that forge alliances and inspire change. Ultimately, Turam argues that the process of democratization is not the reduction of conflict, but rather the capacity to form new alliances out of conflict.

Native American Cultural and Religious Freedoms【

First Published in 2000. The fight to have the American legal system recognize Native American religions has taken many forms, from the confrontation over Indian usage of eagle feathers and the ingestion of peyote in religious ceremonies to the right of students to have traditional Indian hair styles while attending public schools. It was thought that the passage of the American Indian Religious Freedoms Act of 1978 would alleviate these problems, but Supreme Court interpretations have essentially eviscerated this law. In addition to these issues, the articles in this collection address the ongoing conflict between Native Americans and museums and states over who has rights to the skeletal remains and burial objects that have been illegally recovered throughout the U.S.

Patchwork Freedoms Law, Slavery, and Race beyond Cuba's Plantations【電子書籍】[ Adriana Chira ]

In nineteenth-century Santiago de Cuba, the island of Cuba's radical cradle, Afro-descendant peasants forged freedom and devised their own formative path to emancipation. Drawing on understudied archives, this pathbreaking work unearths a new history of Black rural geography and popular legalism, and offers a new framework for thinking about nineteenth-century Black freedom. Santiago de Cuba's Afro-descendant peasantries did not rely on liberal-abolitionist ideologies as a primary reference point in their struggle for rights. Instead, they negotiated their freedom and land piecemeal, through colonial legal frameworks that allowed for local custom and manumission. While gradually wearing down the institution of slavery through litigation and self-purchase, they reimagined colonial racial systems before Cuba's intellectuals had their say. Long before residents of Cuba protested for national independence and island-wide emancipation in 1868, it was Santiago's Afro-descendant peasants who, gradually and invisibly, laid the groundwork for emancipation.

The San Francisco Nexus in World War II Freedoms Found, Liberties Lost, and the Atomic Bomb【電子書籍】[ Philip E. Meza ]

In The San Francisco Nexus in World War II: Freedoms Found, Liberties Lost, and the Atomic Bomb, Meza tells the story of important events in the San Francisco Bay Area that have consequences still felt to date. He traces the invention of the atomic bomb, from a speculative design for a nuclear weapon sketched on a chalkboard at Berkeley by theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer and helped made real by “Big Science” that was pioneered by his friend and colleague, experimental physicist Ernest Lawrence. During this time, Black Americans migrated to San Francisco to escape the Jim Crow South, finding new freedoms, good jobs, and a leader in a singer-turned-welder named Joseph James. Meza shows how James fought for and won an end to segregation in his union, taking a large step toward the civil rights movement. At the same time, Japanese Americans were forced from their homes by a tragically misguided presidential executive order, upheld by the US Supreme Court, illustrating the fragility of liberty in America. These events continue to shape the world today.

Fundamental Freedoms Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights【電子書籍】[ Facing History and Ourselves ]

Surveying Eleanor Roosevelt's early years and then concentrating on her life-long commitment as an activist, Fundamental Freedoms tells of Eleanor's pivotal role in creating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. As demonstrated throughout all four parts of this resource, Eleanor was no ordinary person: she redefined the role of a first lady as she established her own career as a nationally-syndicated journalist and continually spoke out on behalf of the underprivileged. In 1945 after the death of her husband, President Franklin Roosevelt, she participated in the birth of the United Nations and embraced a new role, advocating across the globe for the rights she fought for at home. This resource examines Eleanor's development into a diplomat and renowned human rights leader of the twentieth century, and shows the challenges and determination required to realize the UDHR.

Don't Bring Ayn Rand to a Gunfight - Guns, Freedoms, Defense, and the State (A Libertarian Dream!)【電子書籍】[ Greg Perry ]

Do you value freedom? Do you read freedom writers such as Rothbard, Bastiat, von Mises, Hayek, and of course, Ayn Rand? If so, you know the arguments for freedom, the dangers of a socialistic agenda, the evils of a closed society. Now for the $64,000 question: Do you have skills to back up your arguments?

If not, you're a philosopher without teeth. You don't know how to put into action words you spout.

? Do you know the best way to get trained?
? Are you certain why might you want to get a concealed carry permit... and why you might not!
? Want to know a far better way to celebrate Independence Day than fireworks? (This really makes the left reel with anger!)

Even among conservatives, Libertarians, and Christians so many love the 1st Amendment’s right to free speech but don’t understand that the 2nd Amendment gives the 1st Amendment its teeth! Taking this further, you had the right to defend yourself and your family long before the Constitution’s framers penned the 2nd Amendment. What rights man gives you, man can take away... What right God gives you, no man can take away! You have the inalienable right to protect yourself, your family, and those around you whom you want to protect. Can you do so? Quoting Ayn Rand when someone pulls a gun on you will not save your life!

Oh, this book is so good if you love freedom! But the focus is not the typical gun or defense book. Oh not at all!

Here you learn not only how to hone your arguments to protect your gun rights, more important you learn:

? How to get trained correctly, even if you’re a public school graduate and can’t even spell GUN! This book focuses not on the gun expert (although they will love what it says!), this book focuses on newcomers to the shooting arena who aren’t sure why they might want a weapon themselves but understand the importance of maintaining a legal right to defense as individual citizens.

? What guns you should never get for self-defense (the list probably does not contain guns you think it might!)

? How to use a rifle to celebrate every national holiday and memorial and why you should do just that! And if you don’t have a rifle, you are even better off because you’re now going to get one, only you’ll do it the right way!

? Why Americans have lost their ability to shoot which means our military and law enforcement have too! Consider the America of 75 years ago when every boy and many girls grew up hunting and shooting. Upon entering the military or law enforcement they were taught how to take their skills up a notch, giving America a major boost in enemy battles. Today, recruits enter without ever having held a gun. The time spent on training is still the same. The result is a military and law enforcement, in general, who have virtually no true firearm experience, often less than the bad guys! Gun control laws kill more people than guns do!

Now only will this book give you major advice and insight into the individual’s gun armory and defense preparation, you get a Bonus Appendix that you can use to better your own community! If you live in a state that allows concealed carry (and if you do not, why don’t you?) but you see stores with No Guns signs, you get a step-by-step blueprint on how to get that store owner to change his policy faster than Mayor Bloomberg can veto a gun right bill!

First They Came for the Gun Owners The Campaign to Disarm You and Take Your Freedoms【電子書籍】[ Mark W. Smith ]

Bestselling author and attorney Mark W. Smith exposes the all-encompassing nature of the anti-gun lobby’s attack on the right to keep and bear armsーand how it serves as a proxy to empower government to control other important aspects of our lives. Smith notes that it’s no accident that the people who oppose the Second Amendment also argue for bigger government in other areasーas well as favoring sharp limits on free speech and property rights. Taken together, it is an all-encompassing attack on individual liberties by those who consider themselves intellectually and morally superior to average Americans.

Smith makes a compelling and urgent case that protecting and preserving our right to bear arms is an imperative for all who value freedom, whether you own a gun or not.

Radical Revolution of Values Reclaiming Our Spiritual Heritage, Preserving Our Freedoms, and Countering Terrorism【電子書籍】[ Azam Saeed ]

In this thoroughly researched and hopeful examination inspired by Rev. Martin Luther King' s call for "a radical revolution of values," the author guides readers through a worldly and spiritual voyage, taking a deep dive into the holy scriptures of various religions and their guiding light to move toward justice, peace, and global harmony. Grounded in the principle that our religions can be a source of solutions towards the world' s disputes, Azam delves into the emotionally charged and polarized identities that are too often used as tools of exploitation and control instead of empowerment and freedom. This book inspires readers to ask intricate questions about the world around them by unraveling the complex web of geopolitics, politico-economic systems, and religion in international conflicts.
