Democracy, Populism, and Neoliberalism in Ukraine On the Fringes of the Virtual and the Real【電子書籍】[ Olga Baysha ]

This book explores the reasons behind the unexpected rise to power of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, a former comedian with no political background, and offers an in-depth analysis of the populist messages he delivered to the Ukrainian people via his TV show.

Taking a discourse analysis approach, the author draws on two main arguments of critical scholarship: the “populist explosion” of the recent decade came as a reaction to the inequalities and injustices of the global neoliberal order, and the success of neoliberalism can be explained by its ability to mask itself under attractive progressive covers. Developing these lines of argument, the book demonstrates not only how the “populist explosion” can lead to further neoliberalization, but also that the euphemizing effect can be achieved by mixing the virtual and the real, as in the case of Zelensky.

This first of its kind study will resonate with any scholar or upper-level student working on populism, neoliberalism, political communication, media studies, political science, European studies, Ukrainian studies, and discourse analysis.

Following his first book, Another Bloody Saturday: A Journey to the Heart and Soul of Football, Mat Guy continues his exploration of the 'beautiful game' in Minnows United; an ode to the unsung heroes of football matches taking place out of the limelight, all over the world.

From little known teams within the UK, to teams representing countries that, to most of the world, don't even exist, Mat Guy travels to remote parts of the globe to experience football not only on the fringes of the pitch, but on the fringes of the world. On his travels, he watches matches in Iceland, interviews members of the Tibetan Women's Football team, explores the impact of football in war-torn Palestine and explores the unsung heroes in the football clubs present throughout the length of the UK.

What he finds is countries transcending the game itself and instead building communities, lifelines and friendship with football at the centre.

From Marginal to Mainstream Why Tomorrow’s Brand Growth Will Come from the Fringes - and How to Get There First【電子書籍】[ Helen Edwards ]

Legacy brands are struggling. The hand-to-hand combat for advantage has become a zero-sum game - producing small share gains and losses but nothing to bring about sensational new growth.

This book shows why businesses, marketers and entrepreneurs need to break free from their 'mainstream inhibition' and turn their attention to the margins - to confront, evaluate and embrace the 'strangeness' of behaviours, ideas and ways of life at the fringes.

Why? Because marginal behaviours can break through and take off. They can go mainstream. They can unleash 'consumer-driven disruption', promoting new innovation, new routes to market, new winners and losers - and new growth.

Using original research and analysis of the brands that have successfully backed marginal behaviours, From Marginal to Mainstream provides a framework for understanding and evaluating this non-obvious, untapped potential.

Marginal behaviours may be unpromising, untested, weird, even sometimes repulsive - yet they can point the way to the future.

Today's margins are tomorrow's pot of gold - if you know where and how to look.

Small Groups for the Rest of Us How to Design Your Small Groups System to Reach the Fringes【電子書籍】[ Chris Surratt ]

Most churches in America struggle to have a significant percentage of their adult attendance in small groups. According to recent research done by Lifeway Research, only “33 percent of churchgoers attend classes or groups for adults (such as Sunday school, Bible study, small groups, or Adult Bible Fellowships) four or more times in a typical month. Fourteen percent attend two or three times a month.”

Life transformation happens best within the context of community, so if a church is going to be intentional about discipleship they have to develop on-ramps to small groups that reach people on the fringes and beyond. If we continue to offer small groups to the normal church attenders, a majority of the people who show up to church are never reached.

Pastors, church staff and small group leaders are trying to figure out how to make small groups work in their church and they don’t know how. Small Groups For The Rest Of Us gives them practical, proven strategies on moving people from the fringes into biblically based communities.

Labor on the Fringes of Empire Voice, Exit and the Law【電子書籍】[ Alessandro Stanziani ]

After the abolition of slavery in the Indian Ocean and Africa, the world of labor remained unequal, exploitative, and violent, straddling a fine line between freedom and unfreedom. This book explains why. Unseating the Atlantic paradigm of bondage and drawing from a rich array of colonial, estate, plantation and judicial archives, Alessandro Stanziani investigates the evolution of labor relationships on the Indian subcontinent, the Indian Ocean and Africa, with case studies on Assam, the Mascarene Islands and the French Congo. He finds surprising relationships between African and Indian abolition movements and European labor practices, inviting readers to think in terms of trans-oceanic connections rather than simple oppositions. Above all, he considers how the meaning and practices of freedom in the colonial world differed profoundly from those in the mainland. Arguing for a multi-centered view of imperial dynamics, Labor on the Fringes of Empire is a pioneering global historyof nineteenth-century labor.

An Uncommon Road: How Canadian Sikhs Struggled out of the Fringes and into the Mainstream【電子書籍】[ Gian Sandhu ]

A riveting, incisive account of some of the most complex politics in modern Canada, from the founder of the World Sikh Organization of Canada.
Widely publicized atrocities in the mid-80s came to define Canada’s Sikhs: the 1984 assault on the Golden Temple by the Indian military, the assassination of Indira Gandhi and subsequent pogroms that left over 3,000 Sikhs dead in Delhi alone, and the bombing of Air India Flight 182 one year later. In An Uncommon Road Gian Singh Sandhu traces the evolution of Sikhs’ place in Canada: from Sikhs’ dealing with the assumption of blame for the Air India bombing; to combatting incendiary false news stories; to overcoming rampant disdain by governments in India and at home. Sharing never-before-heard stories, Sandhu offers a remarkable view of some of the most complex modern politics Canadian citizens have ever faced.
But struggle can lead to liberation. Over three decades, the World Sikh Organization fought for landmark human rights legislation, from the rights of Sikhs in the RCMP to wear turbans, to campaigning on behalf of religious freedoms for others, and championing the acceptance of gay marriage.
An Uncommon Road is the celebration of an extraordinarily resilient people and a moving roadmap for how individuals, and a community, can fight for their own social justice andーin doing soーgain justice for all.

* * * * * * *
Gian Singh Sandhu became the founding president of the World Sikh Organization of Canada in 1984 and remains active in that group today. Having emigrated from India in 1970 to Williams Lake, B.C., he is also a proud Canadian and was recognized in 2002 with the Order of British Columbia. He lives in Surrey, B.C.

* * * * * * *
“An Uncommon Road provides the first credible compilation of facts, evidence, and missed opportunities pertaining to and affecting Canadian Sikhs.”
ーDavid Kilgour, human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee

“Gian Singh Sandhu takes us on a journey rarely articulated so passionately. By weaving his personal life into the largest story of Sikhs in Canada, An Uncommon Road encapsulates his entire being. It’s an engrossing read.”
ーKiranjot Kaur, scholar and former General Secretary of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee

“An Uncommon Road is a classic treatise on a community’s attempts at diplomacy, statesmanship, and advocacy. Although told in first person, it is neither parochial nor self-centered, but an extremely well written account of the Canadian Sikh community’s movement toward a broad humanistic and secular outlook.”
ーJagmohan Singh, editor, World Sikh News

“An Uncommon Road is a work of nonfiction that reads like a novel and presents a truly unique perspective. It’s a valuable resource for the casual reader and the scholar alike. I expect it will be included in any array of university courses. Moreover, it’s an entertaining read!
ーCorey D. On the Fringes Preventing exclusion in schools through inclusive, child-centred, needs-based practice【電子書籍】[ Jackie Ward ]

In On the Fringes: Preventing exclusion in schools through inclusive, child-centred, needs-based practice, Jackie Ward opens up the debate surrounding school exclusion and its link to special educational needs (SEN), and shares action-oriented strategies designed to bring about a more inclusive approach.

Too many of our vulnerable young people are being excluded even those with SEN and the very young who are only just on the cusp of school life. And having seen first-hand the impact that exclusion has on children with often unmet medical needs such as autistic spectrum condition (ASC) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Jackie explores in this book the realities of what exclusion means to each of us and its impact on wider society.

Jackie examines this critical issue through the lens of her experiences in both mainstream and specialist settings and presents practical, solution-focused guidance to help schools deliver the inclusive education that every child deserves. Drawing upon a range of sources, Jackie's wide-reaching analysis is backed up with case studies, up-to-date research and anecdotal reports setting out a balanced view focusing on the stated and underlying needs of schools, staff, parents, children and other agencies.

On the Fringes scrutinises exclusion procedures and reviews the SEND Code of Practice in depth, particularly highlighting the role of early interventions in detecting underlying SEN and medical needs. Jackie also explores a range of pre-emptive and alternative approaches that can be employed as part of a whole-school approach to pastoral care and behaviour management that develops pupils' self-awareness and self-regulation.

In doing so she offers informed inspiration to teachers and SEN practitioners working with some of our most vulnerable children who, without our care, compassion and tailored provision, are too often destined for lives on the fringes of society.

Suitable for teachers, school leaders, SEN professionals, policy-makers and parents.

The Siblys of London A Family on the Esoteric Fringes of Georgian England【電子書籍】[ Susan Sommers ]

Ebenezer Sibly was a quack doctor, plagiarist, and masonic ritualist in late eighteenth-century London; his brother Manoah was a respectable accountant and a pastor who ministered to his congregation without pay for fifty years. The inventor of Dr. Sibly's Reanimating Solar Tincture, which claimed to restore the newly dead to life, Ebenezer himself died before he turned fifty and stayed that way despite being surrounded by bottles of the stuff. Asked to execute his will, which urged the continued manufacture of Solar Tincture, and left legacies for multiple and concurrent wives as well as an illegitimate son whose name the deceased could not recall, Manoah found his brother's record of financial and moral indiscretions so upsetting that he immediately resigned his executorship. Ebenezer's death brought a premature conclusion to a colorfully chaotic life, lived on the fringes of various interwoven esoteric subcultures. Drawing on such sources as ratebooks and pollbooks, personal letters and published sermons, burial registers and horoscopes, Susan Mitchell Sommers has woven together an engaging microhistory that offers useful revisions to scholarly accounts of Ebenezer and Manoah, while placing the entire Sibly family firmly in the esoteric byways of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Siblys of London provides fascinating insight into the lives of a family who lived just outside our usual historical range of vision.

Francophone African Narratives and the Anglo-American Book Market Ferment on the Fringes【電子書籍】[ Vivan Steemers ]

In recent years, the material circumstances governing the production of African literature have been analyzed from a variety of angles. This study goes one step further by charting the trajectories of a corpus of francophone African (sub-Saharan) narratives subsequently translated into English. It examines the role of various institutional agents and agenciesーpublishers, preface writers, critics, translators, and literary award committeesーinvolved in the value-making process that accrues visibility to these texts that eventually reach the Anglo-American book market. The author evinces that over time different types of publishers dominated, both within the original publishing space as in the foreign literary field, contingent on their specific missionーbe it commercial, ideological or educationalーas well as on socioeconomic and political circumstances. The study addresses the influence of the editorial paratextual framingーpandering to specific Western readershipsーthe potential interventionist function of the translator, and the consecrating mechanisms of literary and translation awards affecting both gender and minority representation. Drawing on the work by key sociologists and translation theorists, the author uses an innovative interdisciplinary methodology to analyze the corpus narratives.

What she discovered online, at sex clubs, and elsewhere was truly eye-opening.

She started talking to men and womenーfrom across America of all ages and sexual orientationsーwho make no apology for how they fire their imaginations and satisfy their desires. Soon she found herself invited to be a voyeurーlistening in on phone sex, reading e-mails describing sexual encounters in graphic detail, and attending BDSM mixers and workshops. It was all astonishing… and enticing. At every turn she felt herself pulled deeper into people’s secret lives and began questioning her own choices about relationships and sex. Secret Sex Lives is an intimate account of a journalist who is seduced by her subject; a woman who sets out to look behind closed doors but ends up on a personal, revealing journey to find herself…

On the Fringes of Diplomacy Influences on British Foreign Policy, 1800?1945【電子書籍】[ Antony Best ]

In recent decades the study of British foreign policy and diplomacy has broadened in focus. No longer is it enough for historians to look at the actions of the elite figures - diplomats and foreign secretaries - in isolation; increasingly the role of their advisers and subordinates, and those on the fringes of the diplomatic world, is recognised as having exerted critical influence on key decisions and policies. This volume gives further impetus to this revelation, honing in on the fringes of British diplomacy through a selection of case studies of individuals who were able to influence policy. By contextualising each study, the volume explores the wider circles in which these individuals moved, exploring the broader issues affecting the processes of foreign policy. Not the least of these is the issue of official mindsets and of networks of influence in Britain and overseas, inculcated, for example, in the leading public schools, at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and in gentlemen's clubs in London's West End. As such the volume contributes to the growing literature on human agency as well as mentalit? studies in the history of international relations. Moreover it also highlights related themes which have been insufficiently studied by international historians, for example, the influence that outside groups such as missionaries and the press had on the shaping of foreign policy and the role that strategy, intelligence and the experience of war played in the diplomatic process. Through such an approach the workings of British diplomacy during the high-tide of empire is revealed in new and intriguing ways.

Fisher Row & the Watery Fringes of Oxford Through Time【電子書籍】[ Nancy Hood ]

Fisher Row was created as a consequence of the Castle Mill, recorded in the Domesday Book on the western edge of Oxford. This book records the myriad changes that have taken place on the Oxford Canal and on the rivers Thames and Cherwell, Oxford's watery fringes. Although the history of these areas was shaped by the fishermen and boatmen who settled there, and by the Dissolution of the monasteries that once dominated the landscape, there is more to see. Nancy Hood records the landscapes which inspired Lewis Carroll, who told the stories which became Alice in Wonderland on a boat trip along the river, Colin Dexter and Philip Pullman, not to mention the idyllic riverside pubs and University rowing events. Colonial Fantasies, Imperial Realities Race Science and the Making of Polishness on the Fringes of the German Empire, 1840?1920【電子書籍】[ Lenny A. Ure?a Valerio ]

In Colonial Fantasies, Imperial Realities, Lenny Ure?a Valerio offers a transnational approach to Polish-German relations and nineteenth-century colonial subjectivities. She investigates key cultural dynamics in the history of medicine, colonialism, and migration that bring Germany and Prussian Poland closer to the colonial and postcolonial worlds in Africa and Latin America. She also analyzes how Poles in the German Empire positioned themselves in relation to Germans and native populations in overseas colonies. She thus recasts Polish perspectives and experiences, allowing new insights into identity formation and nationalist movements within the German Empire.

Crucially, Ure?a Valerio also studies the medical projects and scientific ideas that traveled from colonies to the German metropole, and vice versa, which were influential not only in the racialization of Slavic populations, but also in bringing scientific conceptions of race to the everydayness of the German Empire. As a whole, Colonial Fantasies, Imperial Realities illuminates nested imperial and colonial relations using sources that range from medical texts and state documents to travel literature and fiction. By studying these scientific and political debates, Ure?a Valerio uncovers novel ways to connect medicine, migration, and colonialism and provides an invigorating model for the analysis of Polish history from a global perspective.

Political Corruption and Organizational Crime The Grey Fringes of Democracy and the Private Economy【

Level of compliance - one of the most important prerequisites of good governance - varies widely across countries of the Global North and the less developed, Global South. Acts of non-compliance, such as electoral irregularities, dubious deals between private and public sectors, questionable role of the justice systems and financial scandals, though they vary greatly across countries, are an omnipresent reality of contemporary life. This volume has brought together a number of case studies of such deviant behavior in political, juridical and corporate fields, from several countries of Asia, Europe and South America, within a common framework. Instead of a moral approach based exclusively on the legality and illegality of the act, the authors of these essays dissect non-compliance analytically, taking culture and context into account. They argue that, while criminal and corrupt dealings deserve to be exposed by all means from an ethical point of view, seen from an interdisciplinary angle, one needs to probe deeper into the dynamic that leads to such non-compliance with the law in the first place.

The Fringes of Belief English Literature, Ancient Heresy, and the Politics of Freethinking, 1660-1760【電子書籍】[ Sarah Ellenzweig ]

The Fringes of Belief is the first literary study of freethinking and religious skepticism in the English Enlightenment. Ellenzweig aims to redress this scholarly lacuna, arguing that a literature of English freethinking has been overlooked because it unexpectedly supported aspects of institutional religion. Analyzing works by John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, Aphra Behn, Jonathan Swift, and Alexander Pope, she foregrounds a strand of the English freethinking tradition that was suspicious of revealed religion yet often strongly opposed to the open denigration of Anglican Christianity and its laws. By exposing the contradictory and volatile status of categories like belief and doubt this book participates in the larger argument in Enlightenment studiesーas well as in current scholarship on the condition of modernity more generallyー-that religion is not so simply left behind in the shift from the pre-modern to the modern world.

Fringes Life on the Edge of Professional Rugby【電子書籍】[ Ben Mercer ]

Updated edition of the #1 Amazon Bestseller
LONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR PRIZE 2020

Sports books tend to detail extraordinary achievements, triumphs against the odds or commemorate World Cup winning captains.

This book does not do that.

For many, playing professional sport is the Dream Job. Few manage it, very few make it to the top and for the rest, life is very different. This is their story.

In Fringes, Ben Mercer invites you to witness life at the outer edges of professional rugby. This is a first hand account of what life is like as a journeyman professional athlete. You play, but to the wider public you don't exist. You earn but you don't drive a flash car. You sometimes pack out a stadium but sometimes, you play in a deserted park. This is the story for the majority of sports professionals. Only the minority taste the top, only one person gets to lift the cup or win the medal, only 15 get to play for England at any one time. For the rest, that’s not the case.

Ben Mercer is a former professional rugby player who after becoming disillusioned and uninspired plying his trade in the English Second Division, accepted an offer out of the blue to go to France and do something different - help an amateur team turn professional. This is a first hand account of what life is like in the lower reaches of professional sport - where your employment status is as precarious as your health and barely anyone will know your name.

It's about how it feels to live year to year, with teammates constantly on the move. It's about how professionalism irreversibly changes the French club Stade Rouennais as they move up the divisions, about the tension between progress and identity in a rugby team. It's also about how it feels to actually be out there on the field, how it feels to occasionally do something extraordinary and how it feels when this is no longer enough for you to make the sacrifices that you need to make to keep playing.

There's no ghostwriting, it's an unmitigated meditation on how it feels and what it means to play rugby for a living, to dedicate yourself to an uncompromising but occasionally beautiful game.

If you've wanted to know what life is really like as a professional athlete, on the Fringes, away from the glitz and glamour of the international game then look no further.

Theological Fringes of Phenomenology【

This book focuses on the relationships between phenomenology and theology, which have been varied and complex but seem currently in an inconclusive and loosely defined state. Methodological rigor is not much in evidence, and the two disciplines continue to defy any authoritative synthesis. While both disciplines grapple with questions concerning the fundamental structures of human experience, their relationship is troubled by the elusive roles of Revelation and faith, which threaten the scientific autonomy of philosophy on one side and disable theologians for consistent philosophical discourse on the other. This volume revisits that conundrum from various perspectives, as it at once repristinates some of the most vibrant points of encounter and opens possibilities for new beginnings. It begins with the theological musings into which leading phenomenologists have been drawn from the start, with special reference to Husserl, Heidegger, and Michel Henry, as well as backward glances to Fichte, Schelling, and Blondel. A second section takes up specific theological themes and examines how phenomenological approaches can refine thinking on them. These include the Incarnation, the Resurrection, the Eucharist, Grace, and Prayer. A dialogue between phenomenology and classical theologians is staged in the third section: Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, Eckhart, and Karl Rahner. The closing section ranges more widely, discussing atheism, non-realist theology, and Hinduism from phenomenological angles, and showing how these topics too come within the ambit of theology.

Tayo Tersoo And The Hunter Of Souls Fringes Of Infinity, #5【電子書籍】[ Edward Allen Karr ]

Note: This is Book 5 in the Fringes Of Infinity series. This novel is time-matched to Book 4, but it tells everything that's going on in Tayo's world and from his perspective. Read Book 4, then Book 5, or match them chapter-for-chapter.

"I must pursue something that hunts in a place without life. And when I find itーif I can find itーeven though it's not alive, I must find a way to kill it? Is that all?" ~Tayo Tersoo, from Lin Finity And The Islands Of Time

Tayo Tersoo, a man pure of heart, dedicated, and very focused, was asked by Lin Finity to combat an entity that she and Gloriana had trapped and brought back from the Godless spaces between the Islands of Time. They call it a Hunter because it hunts souls in those empty spaces, bringing death to the living and chaos to everything else.

What Tayo did not know when he accepted Lin's task was that the entity, the Hunter of Souls, would invade him physically and from there, launch horrific attacks on him and those around him. Is his heart pure enough? How dedicated is he? If he loses his focus and can't keep the Hunter contained, it will roam the Earth, slaughtering wholesale.

"I do not mean these walls," Gabriel said while pointing all around the room and looking from face to face, then pointing down at Tayo, on the floor and losing his mind. "He is the wall." ~From the time-matched novel: Lin Finity And The Flights To Forever (Book Four)

Laughter on the Fringes The Reception of Old Comedy in the Imperial Greek World【電子書籍】[ Anna Peterson ]

This book examines the impact that Athenian Old Comedy had on Greek writers of the imperial era. It is generally acknowledged that imperial-era Greeks responded to Athenian Old Comedy in one of two ways: either as a treasure trove of Atticisms or as a genre defined by and repudiated for its aggressive humor. Worthy of further consideration, however, is the degree to which both approaches, and particularly the latter one that relegated Old Comedy to the fringes of the literary canon, led authors to engage with the ironic and self-reflexive humor of Aristophanes, Eupolis and Cratinus. Authors ranging from serious moralizers (Plutarch and Aelius Aristides) to comic writers in their own right (Lucian, Alciphron) to other figures not often associated with Old Comedy (Libanius) adopted aspects of the genre to negotiate power struggles, facilitate literary and sophistic rivalries, and as a model for autobiographical writing. To varying degrees, these writers wove recognizable features of the genre (e.g. the parabasis, its agonistic language, the stage biographies of the individual poets) into their writings. The image of Old Comedy that emerges from this time is that of a genre in transition. It was, on the one hand, with the exception of Aristophanes' extant plays, on the verge of being almost completely lost; on the other hand, its reputation and several of its most characteristic elements were being renegotiated and reinvented.
