Pharaoh’s Magicians Evolution, the Bible, and Modern Gnosticism【電子書籍】[ Gregory C. Benoit ]

The ancient heresy of Gnosticism has seeped into the church and is being taught in our most influential seminaries today. This can be seen most readily in the willingness-and even determination-of leading scholars and theologians to force the doctrines of evolution into the sacred text of the Scriptures. This book looks closely at the Bible to determine whether or not evolution can be endorsed by the Word of God. It then moves on to examine how today's theologians have played tricks with the text in order to seduce ordinary Christians into embracing Gnosticism. This book is a call to God's people to eradicate this heresy and return to an honest reading of the Bible. "These 'higher critics' have castrated Christianity; they themselves are spiritual eunuchs, incapable of producing any spiritual seed with which to grow the church in the coming generations. They hope to bring some reconciliation between the teachings of modern science and the traditional teachings of Scripture, but instead they only serve to instill doubt in the ordinary Christian-doubt that an ordinary believer can ever again trust his own uneducated reading of the Bible. It is sad to think that William Tyndale was martyred for bringing the Bible to the common man, while modern theologians are being praised for taking it away again."

The Beliefnet Guide to Gnosticism and Other Vanished Christianities【電子書籍】[ Richard Valantasis ]

From its earliest days, Christianity has been marked by a rich diversity of beliefs and practices. Different interpretations of Jesus’ life and mission, as well as conflicting views about worship and rituals, gave rise to numerous sects in the first centuries C.E. Condemned as heretical by the official Church, these early movements were lost to history until the twentieth century, when the discovery of ancient documents opened a new perspective on the evolution of Christianity.

The Beliefnet? Guide to Gnosticism and Other Vanished Christianities is a fascinating look at the diverse strands of the early Christian church. It examines the alternative Christian ideas propagated by the Gnostics, Sethians, Valentinians, Marcionites, Encratites, and Montanists, illuminating the philosophical sources and religious traditions that fostered them. Special attention is given to sects that presented the greatest challenges to the developing orthodoxy: the Hermeticists, the Manicheans, and the Neoplatonists. There are also thought-provoking discussions about the secret Gospel of Mark and the Gospels of Mary and Thomas, and the newly discovered Gospel of the Savior.

From the premier source of information on religion and spirituality, the Beliefnet Guides introduce you to the major traditions, leaders, and issues of faith in the world today.

This authoritative, fully accessible guide to early Christian movements sheds light on the hidden histories and intriguing mysteries that fueled the extraordinary success of books ranging from Dan Brown’s blockbuster The Da Vinci Code to Elaine Pagels’s critically acclaimed Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas.

Gnosticism and the History of Religions【電子書籍】[ Prof David G. Robertson ]

Building on critical work in biblical studies, which shows how a historically-bounded heretical tradition called Gnosticism was 'invented', this work focuses on the following stage in which it was “essentialised” into a sui generis, universal category of religion. At the same time, it shows how Gnosticism became a religious self-identifier, with a number of sizable contemporary groups identifying as Gnostics today, drawing on the same discourses.

This book provides a history of this problematic category, and its relationship with scholarly and popular discourse on religion in the twentieth century. It uses a critical-historical method to show how and why Gnosis, Gnostic and Gnosticism were taken up by specific groups and individuals ? practitioners and scholars ? at different times. It shows how ideas about Gnosticism developed in late nineteenth- and twentieth-century scholarship, drawing from continental phenomenology, Jungian psychology and post-Holocaust theology, to be constructed as a perennial religious current based on special knowledge of the divine in a corrupt world.

David G. Robertson challenges how scholars interact with the category Gnosticism, and contributes to our understanding of the complex relationship between primary sources, academics and practitioners in category formation.

Rethinking "Gnosticism" An Argument for Dismantling a Dubious Category【電子書籍】[ Michael Allen Williams ]

Most anyone interested in such topics as creation mythology, Jungian theory, or the idea of "secret teachings" in ancient Judaism and Christianity has found "gnosticism" compelling. Yet the term "gnosticism," which often connotes a single rebellious movement against the prevailing religions of late antiquity, gives the false impression of a monolithic religious phenomenon. Here Michael Williams challenges the validity of the widely invoked category of ancient "gnosticism" and the ways it has been described. Presenting such famous writings and movements as the Apocryphon of John and Valentinian Christianity, Williams uncovers the similarities and differences among some major traditions widely categorized as gnostic. He provides an eloquent, systematic argument for a more accurate way to discuss these interpretive approaches.

The modern construct "gnosticism" is not justified by any ancient self-definition, and many of the most commonly cited religious features that supposedly define gnosticism phenomenologically turn out to be questionable. Exploring the sample sets of "gnostic" teachings, Williams refutes generalizations concerning asceticism and libertinism, attitudes toward the body and the created world, and alleged features of protest, parasitism, and elitism. He sketches a fresh model for understanding ancient innovations on more "mainstream" Judaism and Christianity, a model that is informed by modern research on dynamics in new religious movements and is freed from the false stereotypes from which the category "gnosticism" has been constructed.

Wrestling with Archons Gnosticism as a Critical Theory of Culture【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Cahana-Blum ]

This book demonstrates that ancient Christian Gnosticism was an ancient form of cultural criticism in a mythological garb. It establishes that, much like modern forms of critical theory, ancient Gnosticism was set on deconstructing mainstream discourses and cultural premises. Strains of critical theory dealt with include the Frankfurt School, queer theory, and poststructural philosophy. The book documents how in both ancient Gnosticism and modern critical theories issues that used to serve as premises for discussion or as concepts relegated to the realms of the “natural” and the “given” in their respective historical contexts, are transformed into objects of contention. The main aim of this book is to salvage the historical category of Gnosticism from its present scholarly disavowal, if only because Gnosticism, when read as a cultural, and not only a religious phenomenon, presents us an ancient form of culture criticism which would be hard to parallel until (post) modernity. While Hans Jonas remarked many years ago that “something in Gnosticism knocks at the door of our Being and of our twentieth-century Being in particular,” by the 21st century global world this something has already entered and lives with us. We can thus still benefit from another perspective, even if it comes from Mediterranean people who lived almost 2,000 years ago.

Gnosticism Through the Prism of the Third Millennium Or Between God and the Creator【電子書籍】[ Alexander Maistrovoy ]

In the epoch of the late antiquity, Gnostic schools gave their own exhaustive answers for the eternal questions of humankind: Who are we? Where did we come from, and why do we exist? What gives rise to endless and inescapable evil and suffering? Jorge Borges describes the Gnostic view of lifethat we are a careless or criminal blunder, the fruit of engagement of the flawed deity and crude material. Thus, the Gnostic answers to these questions were radically different from those espoused by traditional religions of the time. Gnosticism through the Prism of the Third Millennium explores this Gnostic view of life and how they viewed a material world as a distortion of celestial spheresand how in humanity they saw a being doomed to suffering yet carrying inside the spark of the supreme, divine world. Author Alexander Maistrovoy offers a history of Gnosticism and its confrontation with the church, showing how despite the crash of Gnostic schools, its teachings and its questions did not disappear. Today we can make sense of Gnostic philosophy not through the prism of mysticism or mythology, but from the point of view of rationalism, scientific knowledge, and historical experience. And what we will discover is that Gnostic thought has meaning and relevancy today, shedding light on fundamental questions about the universe, ourselves, and the divine.

Aristotle on the Meaning of Man A Philosophical Response to Idealism, Positivism, and Gnosticism【電子書籍】[ Peter Jackson ]

Why was (and is) Aristotle ≪right≫ and why are we ≪wrong≫? In other words, why are Aristotle’s philosophical reflections on man and the world full, real, and convincing and why is so much of our modern philosophy partial and false? This work offers a detailed assessment of Aristotle’s thought in response to these questions.

Using ≪man≫ as a case study, this work shows how Aristotle philosophically treats ≪him≫ as a physical, biological, social, political, ethical, creative, poeticising, and philosophising object in the world. It then continues by laying out his consequent conclusions regarding the necessary capacities of natural objects in the world.

Regarding the modern philosophical approach to ≪man≫, this work shows that it flows from several directions into narcissism, nihilism, and a desire to control and manipulate the world and other people. In short, this work considers these approaches and seeks to show that Aristotle’s philosophy is ≪right≫, true, and commendable and that our modern philosophy is (often) ≪wrong≫, vacuous, and distasteful.

Apocalyptic Patience Mystical Theology / Gnosticism / Ethical Phenomenology【電子書籍】[ Revd Canon Dr Andrew Shanks ]

Andrew Shanks brings together a grand narrative of theology and continental philosophy to argue that the 'solidarity of the shaken' is the kingdom of God in secular dress.

Shanks engages with the philosophy of Jan Patocka; specifically, his Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History, which culminate in the concept of the 'solidarity of the shaken'. Such solidarity is quite simply that which empowers the most radically thoughtful openness to others, embattled against even the most repressive closure; a solidarity without any other essential qualification.

Split into three distinct parts, Shanks begins by discussing Patocka's philosophico-centric grand narrative, and drawing wider reference to the pre-philosophic origins of Abrahamic religious tradition. This is followed by an exploration of mystical theology, Christian and Islamic; of its decay into 'mysticism', and its influence on Christian and Jewish gnostic traditions. The final third presents a discussion on ethical phenomenology. Analysing the proponents of a 'pathos of shakenness' such as Kierkegaard, Levinas, L?gstrup, he juxtaposes 19th-century thinkers such as Arendt and Hegel with Heidegger and Strauss as he moves through the century, and eventually to the rise of secular public conscience movement.

Beyond Gnosticism Myth, Lifestyle, and Society in the School of Valentinus【電子書籍】[ Ismo Dunderberg ]

Valentinus was a popular, influential, and controversial early Christian teacher. His school flourished in the second and third centuries C.E. Yet because his followers ascribed the creation of the visible world not to a supreme God but to an inferior and ignorant Creator-God, they were from early on accused of heresy, and rumors were spread of their immorality and sorcery.

Beyond Gnosticism suggests that scholars approach Valentinians as an early Christian group rather than as a representative of ancient "Gnosticism"-a term notoriously difficult to define. The study shows that Valentinian myths of origin are filled with references to lifestyle (such as the control of emotions), the Christian community, and society, providing students with ethical instruction and new insights into their position in the world. While scholars have mapped the religio-historical and philosophical backgrounds of Valentinian myth, they have yet to address the significance of these mythmaking practices or emphasize the practical consequences of Valentinians' theological views. In this groundbreaking study, Ismo Dunderberg provides a comprehensive portrait of a group hounded by other Christians after Christianity gained a privileged position in the Roman Empire.

Valentinians displayed a keen interest in mythmaking and the interpretation of myths, spinning complex tales about the origin of humans and the world. As this book argues, however, Valentinian Christians did not teach "myth for myth's sake." Rather, myth and practice were closely intertwined. After a brief introduction to the members of the school of Valentinus and the texts they left behind, Dunderberg focuses on Valentinus's interpretation of the biblical creation myth, in which the theologian affirmed humankind's original immortality as a present, not lost quality and placed a special emphasis on the "frank speech" afforded to Adam by the supreme God. Much like ancient philosophers, Valentinus believed that the divine Spirit sustained the entire cosmic chain and saw evil as originating from conspicuous "matter."

Dunderberg then turns to other instances of Valentinian mythmaking dominated by ethical concerns. For example, the analysis and therapy of emotions occupy a prominent place in different versions of the myth of Wisdom's fall, proving that Valentinians, like other educated early Christians, saw Christ as the healer of emotions. Dunderberg also discusses the Tripartite Tractate, the most extensive account to date of Valentinian theology, and shows how Valentinians used cosmic myth to symbolize the persecution of the church in the Roman Empire and to create a separate Christian identity in opposition to the Greeks and the Jews.

Living Gnosticism: An Ancient Way of Knowing【電子書籍】[ Jordan Stratford ]

Twenty-two centuries ago in Alexandria, a sect of philosopher-poets fashioned a myth the strands of which weave through Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Greek philosophy, and inspired the legends of the Holy Grail. Long banished to the realm of notorious heresy, the myths of the Gnostics took root in the fertile imagination of the nineteenth century's artistic movements and esoteric circles, bearing fruit in the daily spiritual practice of thousands today. In 1945, a library of Gnostic writings surfaced form the Egyptian desert, allowing the movement--after 1500 years of propaganda and slander--to speak with its own voice. Rich in imagery, nostalgic in tone, Gnosticism quietly restores Wisdom to her place as a Goddess in Western religion, reveres Eve as the first saint, and acknowledges Mary Magdelene as foremost of the Apostles.

Apocalypse of the Alien God Platonism and the Exile of Sethian Gnosticism【電子書籍】[ Dylan M. Burns ]

In the second century, Platonist and Judeo-Christian thought were sufficiently friendly that a Greek philosopher could declare, "What is Plato but Moses speaking Greek?" Four hundred years later, a Christian emperor had ended the public teaching of subversive Platonic thought. When and how did this philosophical rupture occur? Dylan M. Burns argues that the fundamental break occurred in Rome, ca. 263, in the circle of the great mystic Plotinus, author of the Enneads. Groups of controversial Christian metaphysicians called Gnostics ("knowers") frequented his seminars, disputed his views, and then disappeared from the history of philosophyーuntil the 1945 discovery, at Nag Hammadi, Egypt, of codices containing Gnostic literature, including versions of the books circulated by Plotinus's Christian opponents. Blending state-of-the-art Greek metaphysics and ecstatic Jewish mysticism, these texts describe techniques for entering celestial realms, participating in the angelic liturgy, confronting the transcendent God, and even becoming a divine being oneself. They also describe the revelation of an alien God to his elect, a race of "foreigners" under the protection of the patriarch Seth, whose interventions will ultimately culminate in the end of the world.

Apocalypse of the Alien God proposes a radical interpretation of these long-lost apocalypses, placing them firmly in the context of Judeo-Christian authorship rather than ascribing them to a pagan offshoot of Gnosticism. According to Burns, this Sethian literature emerged along the fault lines between Judaism and Christianity, drew on traditions known to scholars from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Enochic texts, and ultimately catalyzed the rivalry of Platonism with Christianity. Plunging the reader into the culture wars and classrooms of the high Empire, Apocalypse of the Alien God offers the most concrete social and historical description available of any group of Gnostic Christians as it explores the intersections of ancient Judaism, Christianity, Hellenism, myth, and philosophy.

The History of Gnosticism【電子書籍】[ Peter Harrison ]

This book explores the history, concepts, and enduring influence of Gnosticism, tracing its evolution from ancient origins to its manifestations in contemporary culture. Gnosticism, characterized by its emphasis on hidden knowledge (gnosis), cosmic dualism, and the soul's quest for liberation, has shaped spiritual, philosophical, and cultural landscapes for millennia. Beginning with its roots in Jewish apocalypticism, Hellenistic philosophy, and early Christianity, the book examines how Gnostic movements articulated a worldview that challenged orthodox religious doctrines and emphasized personal spiritual enlightenment.

The text delves into the development of Gnostic sects, such as the Valentinians and Sethians, and their complex cosmologies, which reimagined creation as the flawed work of a Demiurge. It analyzes the suppression of Gnosticism by the early Church and its persistence through medieval heresies like the Cathars and Bogomils. The Renaissance revival of Gnostic and Hermetic traditions is highlighted, as are the contributions of thinkers like Carl Jung, who reframed Gnosticism within the context of depth psychology, emphasizing its relevance to the human psyche and the process of individuation.

Modern religious movements, including Theosophy and Anthroposophy, reinterpreted Gnostic themes, integrating them with Eastern philosophies and contemporary spirituality. Popular culture has further embraced Gnostic ideas, as seen in films like The Matrix and the novels of Philip K. Dick, which explore themes of simulated realities and spiritual awakening. The book concludes by examining "Digital Gnosticism," a phenomenon emerging in the internet age that reimagines Gnostic ideas within virtual realities and artificial intelligence, offering a lens for understanding the ethical and existential challenges of technological advancement.

Through historical analysis, textual commentary, and exploration of cultural impact, this book demonstrates Gnosticism's adaptability and enduring resonance. It provides a comprehensive account of how Gnostic ideas have evolved, influencing theology, philosophy, literature, art, and digital culture, and offering insights into humanity's perpetual quest for meaning, liberation, and self-understanding.

In this book an attempt is made to single out those elements in the philosophical system of the Enneads that stand apart from the Platonist tradition. On the basis of an extensive analysis of fundamental texts the author shows that what Plotinus had in mind was a quite independent paradigm of metaphysical theology, with at its centre the human person.

Gnosticism New Light on the Ancient Tradition of Inner Knowing【電子書籍】[ Stephan A Hoeller ]

Gnosticism developed alongside Judeo-Christianity over two thousand years ago, but with an important difference: It emphasizes, not faith, but direct perception of God--Gnosticism being derived from the Greek word gnosis, meaning "knowledge." Given the controversial premise that one can know God directly, the history of Gnosticism is an unfolding drama of passion, political intrigue, martyrdom, and mystery. Dr. Hoeller traces this fascinating story throughout time and shows how Gnosticism has inspired such great thinkers as Voltaire, Blake, Yeats, Hesse, Melville, and Jung.

The Absolutely Essential Guide To Agnosticism【電子書籍】[ Aaron Caldwell ]

No matter how many falsehoods the theist has spread about agnosticism, it has survived quite well over the decades and is a theology to be reckoned with. An international poll of most western countries taken in the early 90's, asked people their religion. 17% wrote agnostic. How many millions of acknowledged agnostics are there in the US alone? No one knows for sure. In addition, how many more Americans lean towards agnosticism and don't realize it? Millions more probably.

This book has been written to give a better understanding of both the agnostic and contemporary agnostic theologies. The theistic religion most discussed is Christianity. This is not because Christianity is better than other religions but because (1) agnosticism was developed in response to orthodox Christianity, (2) the theology of agnosticism is most prevalent in Christian dominated cultures and (3) because Jesus was not only a great teacher but the religious visionary western civilization is most familiar with.

Reference information on Christianity will be provided to help us better understand how and why contemporary agnosticism and its grandfather, agnosticism, developed. We'll gain a better understanding of contemporary agnostic principles by discussing this theology's position on key religious doctrines such as the fear of God, the apocalypse, life after death and prayer. To aid in this process, the reader is encouraged to take advantage of the glossary and several appendixes in the back.

This publication will use the power of knowledge and history to explore theology. Facts generally are presented from the standpoint of science and history rather than from the standpoint of faith. This book won't spend a great deal of time with drawn out essays. Instead, one point will be clarified concisely so the reader can move on to another. In this publication, the "Jesus of faith," which for so many centuries was unquestioned, will give way to the more likely "Jesus of history." We'll utilize a perspective of Jesus that has been intensely scrutinized by scientific and historically oriented research methods. In doing so, we hope to provide a better understanding of what this wondrous sage and visionary had to offer mankind.

This more scrutinized perspective of the life and teachings of Jesus began emerging in 1906 when Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweitzer (also known as a great doctor and humanitarian) wrote "Quest Of The Historical Jesus." Research on the subject of a historically more accurate Jesus has dramatically increased in the last 30 years. As well as being called "the Jesus of history," this perspective is also referred to as "the historically more accurate Jesus," and "the historical Jesus." More than 100 biblical scholars, researchers and professor participated in this scientific research. Almost all of these scholars have P. h Ds. or the theological equivalent. What they found was a better understanding of the founding prophet of Christianity and what this man of great wisdom said.

Aaron can be reached at the book's discussion board - aaron-caldwell.boards.net

Books by Aaron Caldwell include:

The Ultimate Collection of Famous Virgin Births: A Reference Book

The Location of Hell is Here on Earth: Arguments For and Reasons Why

100+ Famous Figures with Virgin Births and/or December 25th Birthdays Prior to Jesus Christ: A Reference List

The Ultimate Collection of Resurrections and Rebirths

The Contemporary Agnostic Believer

Resurrections

The Absolutely Essential Guide To Agnosticism

The Location of Hell is Here on Earth: Arguments For and Reasons Why Special Edition - 3 Books in One.

Agnosticismo y fe po?tica en Jorge Luis Borges【電子書籍】[ Lucrecia Romera ]

In this engrossing work, written for a doctorate in theology at the Catholic University of America, George J. Lucas crafts a rebuttal to Herbert Spencer’s work The Unknowable, which claims agnostic science and metaphysics render the concept of a deity untenable. Lucas begins his work with a history of agnosticism, believing it a misunderstood philosophy, before launching into his argument that religion and science can work in harmony, one does not prove the other false.

The Attitude of Agnosticism【電子書籍】[ Avery Archer ]

We often describe ourselves as agnostic on a wide range of topics, such as does God exist, is String Theory true, or will the President win re-election? But what, precisely, does it mean to be agnostic? This monograph employs the tools and techniques of analytic philosophy to offer a broad account of what it means to be agnostic in both theological and non-theological contexts, and offers a critical discussion of the major descriptive accounts of agnosticism in the contemporary analytic philosophical literature. Unlike most other volumes on the subject, which approach the question from a theological point of view, this is the first book-length discussion of agnosticism from a purely philosophical, as opposed to theological, point of view. It serves as a natural starting-point for students and specialists in philosophy and anyone who is interested in the topic of agnosticism through the lens of analytic philosophy.
