Carved in Stone The Artistry of Early New England Gravestones【電子書籍】[ Thomas E. Gibson ]

Evocative photographs and essay illuminate early American gravestones

Gravestones are colonial America's earliest sculpture and they provide a unique physical link to the European people who settled here. Carved in Stone book is an elegant collection of over eighty fine duotone photographs, each a personal meditation on an old stone carving, and on New England's past, where these stones tell stories about death at sea, epidemics such as small pox, the loss of children, and a grim view of the afterlife. The essay is a graceful narrative that explores a long personal involvement with the stones and their placement in New England landscape, and attempts to trace the curious and imperfectly documented story of carvers. Brief quotes from early New England writers accompany the images, and captions provide basic information about each stone. These meditative portraits present an intimate view of figures from New England graveyards and will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in early Americana and fine art photography.

The Man who Cleaned Gravestones【電子書籍】[ Jim Smith ]

Why would a retired detective be cleaning gravestones? Bob Macinaly had to retire from the job he loved after having been shot by a bank robber. He had taken a holiday in Mallorca trying to get his life back together. By chance, he found himself in a Salvation Army charity shop and purchased a second-hand book. A letter hidden inside changed his life forever. As a police officer he moved from one case to another and very seldom could he follow up on the unseen victims left behind, namely the close families who would suffer forever whilst the convicted murderer would live out life in, some would say, comparative luxury. From now on this would be different; he would become close to human trafficking and the evil controllers and the crime lords making millions at the cost of human lives.

Reading the Gravestones of Old New England【電子書籍】[ John G.S. Hanson ]

The graveyards of old New England hold an incredible range of poetic messages in the epitaphs etched into the gravestones, each a profound expression of emotion, culture, religion, and literature. These epitaphs are old, but their themes are timeless: mourning and faith, grief and hope, loss, and memory. This book tells the story of a years-long walk among gravestones and shares insights gained along the way. It identifies the source texts and authors chosen for these stones; interprets something of the tastes and beliefs of the people who did the choosing; offers some hypotheses on the various ways these texts were accessible to readers in remote towns and villages; gives a brief summary of the religious context of the times; and reflects on how the language and literature chosen for these epitaphs express these peoples' conflicted and evolving attitudes towards life, death, and eternity.

Abraham Lincoln's Honored Dead At The Gettysburg National Cemetery Profiles of the 2,000 Soldiers with Names Preserved for Their Gravestones【電子書籍】[ James A. Christian ]

Being released on the 161st observance of the Gettysburg Dedication Day, this new book is being published to follow up the solemnity and caring characterizing how Lincoln eulogized these honored dead by presenting these profiles of the lives of the 2000 of these honored dead of the over 4000 total buried, the ones fortuned with having their names preserved on their gravestones.

This new book presents the profiles of these named soldiers in a tabular format, matching the sequential grave-by-grave location that these men today lie buried in the cemetery. The profiles seek to resurrect the individual personhoods of these men by identifying distinguishing characteristics in their lives and military service. The profiles provide each soldier's birth year and residence and occupation prior to enlisting into the Union army. Irish and German immigrants are identified. The profiles give the army unit that each soldier was enlisted into, his rank upon enlisting, promotions, court martials and interesting detachments during their service, as with men sent to work as hospital stewards before later they themselves would die in such hospitals.

The profiles attempt to retrieve from the over 2500 soldiers' service records examined for this book at the D.C. National Archives the nature of each soldier's mortal wounding at Gettysburg, the day it was received, the care and any amputations the soldier received, and the date the soldier died. The profiles highlight the age or approximate age at which each soldier died. Minors who surreptitiously enlisted in the army and were killed before their 18th birthday are identified. The youngest of these deaths is found in a boy soldier killed at only 14 years old. The profiles identify the soldiers who fought and died under aliases and the nine Confederates mistakenly buried in the cemetery. The profiles identify the pension recipients of the killed soldiers, these being the widowed mothers, the pregnant wives, and the now fatherless children given with their names and ages.

Over 300 footnotes are appended throughout the text to flag the profiles of the soldiers killed as minors and also the profiles warranting more detail regarding the soldiers' pension recipients. Over 700 U.S. pension records were examined at the D.C. National Archives to report these pension recipients.

This book gives the U.S. pension certificate numbers, facilitating their viewing on the Fold.com website. The tabular format of these profiles are separated, as in the cemetery, by the states. This book offers at the end of each state chapter a technical illustration of a monument today on the Gettysburg battlefield, given with a caption commenting on the monument's significance for the veterans who oversaw their erections some 20-30 years after the battle.

No Gravestones in the Ocean: The emigrant ship Scimitar 1873-1874【電子書籍】[ Mike Beith ]

In March 1874 an emigrant ship arrived at Port Chalmers, New Zealand, triggering a series of events that ranged from a Royal Commission of Inquiry to demands for an explanation from the UK Secretary of State for the Colonies. For several weeks emigrant ships had been arriving in the colony with disease on board and having experienced significant numbers of emigrant deaths en route. The New Zealand media reported that the means of selection and conduct of the emigrant process in England was clearly at fault and demanded action.

The arrival of Scimitar flying the yellow flag, the international signal warning of disease on board, confirmed what they already feared ? that yet another ship would be quarantined and her passengers and cargo detained at extra cost and with the risk of importing contagious disease to the young colony. There was also a reputational cost to be considered as New Zealand had embarked on an ambitious programme of expansion to its infrastructure which needed a large influx of immigrants and already incurring enormous loans to finance it. It had experienced difficulty in attracting immigrants in sufficient numbers and had just started to encourage agricultural and rural trade unions to assist in recruitment of suitable candidates.

Responsibility for emigrant selection and transportation lay with New Zealand’s first diplomat, Dr Isaac Earl Featherston resident in London. Since 1871, when he began his quest for emigrants, he had received frequent criticism of his management style and now he was firmly in the firing line to take the blame. His prime adversary in New Zealand was no less a person than the Premier himself, Julius Vogel CMG, architect of the expensive colony development plan.

This book examines the Scimitar story from before she set sail, including the daily account written by her captain, James Fox, full details of the Royal Commission of Inquiry and of the evidence submitted to it. The repercussions of the Inquiry’s conclusions resulted in a stream of letters and reports between New Zealand officials, UK institutions and others accused of hindering the safe passage of emigrants. The Commission’s report revolved around the evidence of Scimitar’s surgeon-superintendent, Dr. William H. Hosking, who contested the manner in which his evidence was used and recorded. The book reveals how the poor working relationship between Julius Vogel and Dr. Featherston delayed improvements to the emigration process.

Abraham Lincoln's Honored Dead at The Gettysburg National Cemetery Profiles of the 2,000 Soldiers with Names Preserved for Their Gravestones【電子書籍】[ James A. Christian ]

At the November 19, 1863, dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous address, eulogizing the "honored dead" being interred there. Only half of the four thousand soldiers who would be interred in the cemetery would have names inscribed on their gravestones, the remainder being simply interred as unknowns.

Abraham Lincoln's Honored Dead at the Gettysburg National Cemetery presents capsulized profiles of the two thousand soldiers with preserved names on their gravestones.

The soldier profiles are organized by state and presented in the order, by row and space, that a visitor to the cemetery would encounter each next inscribed grave in walking along the row in the state plot. Each profile gives the soldier's birthdate or birth year; his birthplace, if recorded; his enlistment date and rank; his pre-enlistment residence and occupation, if documented; his promotions, detachments, and absences during his service; his record of capture or wounding in battle preceding Gettysburg; the date of his wounding at Gettysburg, along with any record of the wound care he received, this mainly being amputations; and his date of death.

Of singular importance, the inscribed names on the gravestones show hundreds of errors. The profiles cite each of these errors and report corrected names, as confirmed by the soldiers' military service files. A special addition in this second edition is an index of these corrected gravestone names, offering historical and genealogical researchers a quick reference to the hundreds of otherwise misidentified soldiers. This second edition also augments and updates much of the information in the book's first edition.

Profile focuses carried over in this edition include referencing the names and grave locations of the nine acknowledged Confederates who were mistakenly buried in this Union cemetery; the names and grave locations of the underaged enlistees who would be killed at Gettysburg before their eighteenth birthday, including the youngest of these minors documented killed before his fifteenth birthday; the true names of soldiers who today lie buried under aliases; and the names of soldiers' wives, children and widowed mothers, who made successful applications for U.S. Pension Office stipends, included with their ages as of the dates these applications were made. The identification of these soldiers' children by name, and with their ages as of 1863, is of particular value for genealogical researchers, as these children are the great-great-grandparents and distant ancestors of millions of Americans alive today. The profiles also include the serial numbers of each of these so-termed Widow's Certificates, allowing for full reviews of these pension documents on the Fold3.com website.

The author examined over 2,000 Civil War service files and over 700 U.S. Pension Office records in order to present the intimate detail in these soldier profiles. With these profiles, the book has sought to enable glances into the lives of these two thousand men sacrificed at the Battle of Gettysburg. The readers of this book honor the sacrifices of these men by learning of their lives. The book simultaneously rewards the reader by presenting an unparalleled snapshot of the men who fought the Civil War.
