The Ontology, Psychology and Axiology of Habits (Habitus) in Medieval Philosophy【
|

This book features 20 essays that explore how Latin medieval philosophers and theologians from Anselm to Buridan conceived of habitus, as well as detailed studies of the use of the concept by Augustine and of the reception of the medieval doctrines of habitus in Su?rez and Descartes. Habitus are defined as stable dispositions to act or think in a certain way. This definition was passed down to the medieval thinkers from Aristotle and, to a lesser extent, Augustine, and played a key role in many of the philosophical and theological developments of the time.

Written by leading experts in medieval and modern philosophy, the book offers a historical overview that examines the topic in light of recent advances in medieval cognitive psychology and medieval moral theory. Coverage includes such topics as the metaphysics of the soul, the definition of virtue and vice, and the epistemology of self-knowledge. The book also contains an introduction that is the first attempt at a comprehensive survey of the nature and function of habitus in medieval thought.

The material will appeal to a wide audience of historians of philosophy and contemporary philosophers. It is relevant as much to the historian of ancient philosophy who wants to track the historical reception of Aristotelian ideas as it is to historians of modern philosophy who would like to study the progressive disappearance of the term “habitus” in the early modern period and the concepts that were substituted for it. In addition, the volume will also be of interest to contemporary philosophers open to historical perspectives in order to renew current trends in cognitive psychology, virtue epistemology, and virtue ethics.

The Structure and Habits of Spiders【電子書籍】[ J. H. Emerton ]
|

In "The Structure and Habits of Spiders", J. H. Emerton meticulously examines arachnid anatomy and behavior, employing a blend of empirical observation and rigorous scientific analysis. Emerton's literary style is characterized by clear, concise prose, accompanied by intricate illustrations that elucidate the complexities of spider morphology. This groundbreaking work situates itself within the context of 19th-century natural history, reflecting a burgeoning interest in entomology and the systematic classification of species, influenced by contemporaries such as Charles Darwin and John Lubbock. J. H. Emerton, a noted entomologist and arachnologist, was profoundly influenced by the scientific discourse of his time. His passion for the natural world is evident in his dedication to studying spiders in their habitats, which inspired this seminal text. Emerton's contributions to the field were pivotal, as he sought to bridge the gap between biological science and public understanding, advocating for the appreciation of these often-misunderstood creatures. This book is highly recommended for anyone keen on expanding their understanding of biodiversity or the intricate lives of spiders. Both scholars and casual readers will find Emerton's detailed observations and insightful interpretations illuminating, making it a valuable addition to the libraries of nature enthusiasts and scientific scholars alike.

Scarcity Brain Fix Your Craving Mindset and Rewire Your Habits to Thrive with Enough【電子書籍】[ Michael Easter ]
|

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? The author of The Comfort Crisis asks: Are we hardwired to crave more? From food and stuff to information and influence, why can’t we ever get enough?

“Reveals the biological and evolutionary foundations behind your brain’s fixations, so you can stop seeking and start living.”ーMelissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and author of The Book of Boundaries

“Michael Easter’s genius is that he puts data around the edges of what we intuitively believe. His work has inspired many to change their lives for the better.”ーDr. Peter Attia, author of Outlive

Have you ever found yourself wondering “Why do I want more than I have?” Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis and one of the world’s leading experts on behavior change, shows that the problem isn’t you. The problem is your scarcity mindset, left over from our ancient ancestors. They had to constantly seek and consume to survive because vital survival tools like food, material goods, information, and power were scarce and hard to find.

But with our modern ability to easily fulfill our ancient desire for more, our hardwired “scarcity brain” is now backfiring. And new technology and institutionsーfrom dating and entertainment apps to our food and economic systemsーare exploiting our scarcity brain. They’re bombarding us with subversive “scarcity cues,” subtle triggers that lead us into low-reward cravings that hurt us in the long run. Scarcity cues can be direct and all-encompassing, like a sagging economy. Or they can be subtle and slight, like our neighbor buying a shiny new car.

Easter traveled the world to consult with remarkable innovators and leading scientists who are finding surprising solutions for our scarcity brain. He discovered simple tactics that can move us towards an abundance mindset, cement healthy habits, and allow us to live our lives to the fullest and appreciate what we have, including how to:

? Detect hidden scarcity cues to stop cravings before they start, from a brilliant slot machine designer in a Las Vegas casino laboratory
? Turn alone time into the ultimate happiness hack, from artisanal coffee-making Benedictine monks
? Reignite your exploration gene for a more exciting and fulfilling life, from an astronaut onboard the International Space Station
? Reframe how we think about and fix addiction and bad habits, from Iraq’s chief psychiatrist
? Recognize when you have enough, from a woman who left a million-dollar career path to adventure the world

Our world is overloaded with everything we’re built to crave. The fix for scarcity brain isn’t to blindly aim for less. It’s to understand why we crave more in the first place, shake our worst habits, and use what we already have better. Then we can experience life in a new wayーa more satisfying way.

However, despite the number of things we're doing, we're not accomplishing much of anything. The problem is, we're performing a tremendous number of small and insignificant tasks that eat up most of our day.

We must differentiate between being efficient and being effective. If you have the correct productive habits, your results will grow and become astronomically positive. If you have destructive or counterproductive habits, your results will deteriorate and become incredibly negative. Your habits can either work for you or against you.

Most people have many unfulfilled dreams and desires. They need to make changes right now, so they can enjoy the positive results while they're still young and healthy, instead of waiting until they're old and sick, or worse yet, never reaching their goals.

The truth is, all that's necessary to get the results you want is for you to do a few basic fundamentals really well. Doing the basic fundamentals really well is always the fastest, easiest, and most effective way to get excellent results. Don't waste time on trendy advice that quickly fizzles out. Instead, learn timeless fundamentals that will always be relevant.

You'll be able to start applying what you've learned immediately after you've finished reading this book by using the example procedures, responses, strategies, behaviors, and action steps.
If you feel that you have become your worst enemy, feel stressed and panicked a lot… then read on.

Do you feel pressured and demotivated every time you need to focus on something important?

Do you think that circumstances outside of your control, or maybe some influential, powerful people, are always set against you?

Would you rather go to sleep, forget about worries and responsibilities, and just shut down instead of facing another day because your inner critic just can’t stop nagging you?

We have all been there. But the truth is very simple ? although it’s an amazing creation, it’s your brain working against you because it’s heavily cluttered.

Your brain works hard all day long. Even when you sleep, it processes everything from the experiences you had during the day, through past memories, to future worries, plans, and tasks ahead. Add to that controlling every aspect of your physical body’s wellbeing, and you have a long list of requirements it needs to fulfill.

An overworked brain can respond in unpredictable ways. It can cause you to panic, feel stressed and unmotivated.
It produces that little voice that criticizes everything you do, puts pressure on every single task at hand and makes you worry.

A study published in 2018 in Neurology has proven that chronic stress makes your brain shrink.

The cause of all of that is very simple ? it’s mental clutter.

In “Declutter Your Mind”, you will discover:

- What are the 8 most common negative thought patterns and how to combat them

- The 4 symptoms that if you manage well, your life will get better (let them be, and your health will deteriorate)

- The one and only thing a UCLA study found that is more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol

- The first steps you should take to reduce the clutter in your mind

- How being alone and focusing on yourself can lead to better mental organization

- 5 ways in which becoming your own best friend can lead to a calm life filled with optimism you deserve

- The best ways to identify beneficial and toxic relationships, and the best methods of organizing them

- How to maintain a peaceful, relaxed mind with 3 proven habits to stay confident and in control

And much more.

Catch the issue before it becomes a problem. If left alone, it could cause serious repercussions in all areas of life. Even if for now it seems like you can handle the situation, you can peel yourself off the bed and cope with the stress and pressure, it can soon be too much to handle.

Remember, chronic stress is a legitimate ailment.

According to Mental Health Foundation, 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope.

With the right techniques, empowerment, and mindfulness, you too will be able to make those issues a thing of the past.

If you want to get rid of excessive stress and clutter that poisons your life, then check out this guidebook right now!

|

Discover the Life-Changing Strategy of This Worldwide Bestseller in 17 Languages!

Lasting Change For Early Quitters, Burnouts, The Unmotivated, And Everyone Else Too

When I decided to start exercising consistently 10 years ago, this is what actually happened:

I tried "getting motivated." It worked sometimes.

I tried setting audacious big goals. I almost always failed them.

I tried to make changes last. They didn't.

Like most people who try to change and fail, I assumed that I was the problem.

Then one afternoon--after another failed attempt to get motivated to exercise--I (accidentally) started my first mini habit. I initially committed to do one push-up, and it turned into a full workout. I was shocked. This "stupid idea" wasn't supposed to work. I was shocked again when my success with this strategy continued for months (and to this day). I had to consider that maybe I wasn't the problem in those 10 years of mediocre results. Maybe it was my prior strategies that were ineffective, despite being oft-repeated as "the way to change" in countless books and blogs.

I was right.

Is There A Scientific Explanation For This?
As I sought understanding, I found a plethora of scientific studies that had answers, with nobody to interpret them correctly. Based on the science--which you'll find peppered throughout Mini Habits--we've been doing it all wrong.

You can succeed without the guilt, intimidation, and repeated failure associated with such strategies as "getting motivated," New Year's Resolutions, or even "just doing it." In fact, you need to stop using those strategies if they aren't giving you great results. They don't work because they all require you to fight against your subconscious brain (a fight not easily won). It's only when you start playing by your brain's rules and taking your human limitations seriously--as mini habits show you how to do--that you can achieve lasting change.

What's A Mini Habit?
A mini habit is a very small positive behavior that you force yourself to do every day; its "too small to fail" nature makes it weightless, deceptively powerful, and a superior habit-building strategy. You will have no choice but to believe in yourself when you're always moving forward. The barrier to the first step is so low that even depressed or "stuck" people can find early success and begin to reverse their lives right away. And if you think one push-up a day is too small to matter, I've got one heck of a story for you!

Aim For The First Step
They say when you aim for the moon, you'll land among the stars. Well, that doesn't make sense, as the moon is closer than the stars. I digress. The message is that you should aim very high and even if you fall short, you'll still get somewhere. I've found the opposite to be true in regards to productivity and healthy behaviors. When you aim for the moon, you'll won't shoot because it's too far away. But when you aim for the step in front of you, you might just keep going and reach the moon.

I've used the Mini Habits strategy to get into the best shape of my life, read 10x more books, and write 4x as many words. It started from requiring one push-up from myself every day. How ridiculous is that? Not so ridiculous when you consider the science of the brain, habits, and willpower. The Mini Habits system works because it's how our brains are designed to change.

I relished the opportunity to share this life-changing strategy with the world. I loved writing Mini Habits. You'll see my passion in the content as well as the overall quality and presentation of the book.

Note: This book isn't for eliminating bad habits (though some principles could be useful for breaking habits). Mini Habits is a strategy to create permanent healthy habits. Some categories include: exercise, writing, reading, thinking positively, meditating, drinking water, eating healthy foods, etc.

In Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind, noted educators Arthur L. Costa and Bena Kallick present a comprehensive guide to shaping schools around Habits of Mind. The habits are a repertoire of behaviors that help both students and teachers successfully navigate the various challenges and problems they encounter in the classroom and in everyday life. The Habits of Mind include

* Persisting

* Managing impulsivity

* Listening with understanding and empathy

* Thinking flexibly

* Thinking about thinking (metacognition)

* Striving for accuracy

* Questioning and posing problems

* Applying past knowledge to new situations

* Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision

* Gathering data through all senses

* Creating, imagining, innovating

* Responding with wonderment and awe

* Taking responsible risks

* Finding humor

* Thinking interdependently

* Remaining open to continuous learning

This volume brings togetherーin a revised and expanded formatーconcepts from the four books in Costa and Kallick's earlier work Habits of Mind: A Developmental Series. Along with other highly respected scholars and practitioners, the authors explain how the 16 Habits of Mind dovetail with up-to-date concepts of what constitutes intelligence; present instructional strategies for activating the habits and creating a "thought-full" classroom environment; offer assessment and reporting strategies that incorporate the habits; and provide real-life examples of how communities, school districts, building administrators, and teachers can integrate the habits into their school culture. Drawing upon their research and work over many years, in many countries, Costa and Kallick present a compelling rationale for using the Habits of Mind as a foundation for leading, teaching, learning, and living well in a complex world.

Improving your life is much easier than you think. Whether it’s losing weight, sleeping more, or restoring your work/life balance ? the secret is to start small.

For years, we’ve been told that being more healthy and productive is a matter of willpower: that we should follow the latest fad and make constant changes to our lifestyles. But whether in our diets, fitness plans or jobs, radical overhauls never work. Instead we should start with quick wins ー and embed new, tiny habits into our everyday routines.

The world expert on this is Silicon Valley legend BJ Fogg, pioneering research psychologist and founder of the iconic Behaviour Design Lab at Stanford. Now anyone can use his science-based approach to make changes that are simple to achieve and sticky enough to last.

In the hugely anticipated Tiny Habits, BJ Fogg shows us how to change our lives for the better, one tiny habit at a time. Based on twenty years research and his experience coaching over 40,000 people, it cracks the code of habit formation. Focus on what is easy to change, not what is hard; focus on what you want to do, not what you should do. At the heart of this is a startling truth ー that creating happier, healthier lives can be easy, and surprisingly fun.

Mini Habits for Weight Loss Stop Dieting. Form New Habits. Change Your Lifestyle Without Suffering.【電子書籍】[ Stephen Guise ]

|

You will never diet again.

Say goodbye to calorie counting, restrictive food bans, or other forced behaviors. In Mini Habits for Weight Loss, you will learn how to lose weight naturally, in the precise way your body and brain are meant to change.

We’ve blamed ourselves for lack of discipline. That didn’t help.
We’ve blamed calories, carbs, and fat. That didn’t help.
We’ve blamed our diet formulas. That didn’t help.

It’s time we looked at the practice of dieting.

Nearly all diets are ineffective because they’re based on dieting. Every person has a diet (noun), but it’s only if you are trying to lose weight that you diet (verb). Dieting is eating and drinking sparingly or selectively to reduce your weight.

It doesn’t work. If you’ve tried dieting, you know that.

Even the “perfect diet” with the right foods will fail if it’s approached from the traditional dieting perspective. Since weight loss experts are more concerned with biology than neuroscience, we get brilliant discussions on nutrition followed by the same dumb suggestion to “immediately start eating completely different foods than the ones you’re habitually used to eating, and give up everything else.”

Are You Fighting Your Own Body and Brain?

The brain resists dramatic behavioral shifts. Recognizing this and developing a strategy around it made the original Mini Habits the #1 selling self-help book in a number of countries. In Mini Habits for Weight Loss, you’ll see that we also biologically resist such changes, which explains why most dieters and smoothie-cleanse aficionados lose weight in the short term, only to gain it all back (and more) when the body adjusts.

Mini Habits for Weight Loss will show you how to make dietary changes in a sustainable, permanent way that doesn’t trigger biological or neurological resistance.

It’s a specialized version of the method that made the original book a hit in 14 languages. The mini habits remain easy to implement, but the reasoning and supporting tactics are more sophisticated. This is by necessity, as weight loss factors are many and varied. The strategies in the book are rooted in extensive biological and neuroscience research.

You’ll discover:

Why it’s a terrible idea to forbid junk food.

How some of the most impactful changes you can make don’t involve either diet or exercise.

Why conscious calorie restriction causes long-term weight GAIN, and how this science has been publicly available (and ignored) for more than 30 years.

How the body’s change process mirrors that of the brain, and why that is great news for losing weight.

Creative strategies to mitigate weight gain from eating out, social events, and holiday binge sessions.

Why eating fruit is essential to losing weight (for lots of reasons).

The role of exercise and an active lifestyle in weight loss, with appropriate strategies.

Most importantly, you’ll learn how to change your behavior and lose weight in the long term with mini habits.

Instead of reading yet another dieting book, why not try a proven behavioral change strategy that your brain and body will welcome and respond to?

Lasting change won't happen until you take that first step toward a strategy that works.

Read Mini Habits for Weight Loss, and you’ll never diet again.

Sustainable Health: Simple Habits to Transform Your Life【電子書籍】[ Susan L. Roberts ]

Simple practicesーa marriage of science and spiritualityーthat will help you take charge of your health.

Ancient healers understood the universe as an interconnected conscious relationship between natural elements. As Western medicine took hold, we lost our sense of intuitive healing and practices. Here, occupational therapist Susan L. Robertsーwho also has a degree from Harvard Divinity Schoolーgives us tools for self-care based on the five-element theory of traditional Chinese medicine. These elementsーfire, earth, wood, metal, and waterーcan also be linked to contemporary science and the elements of energy, matter, time, and space. Through focus on these elements, readers will learn how to impact tangible experiences of living, such as sleeping, eating, working, and understanding one’s own body. Roberts argues that our bodies communicate with the world, and that symptoms we may experience, such as headaches or exhaustion, can be mitigated by tapping into our ability to take care of ourselvesーthe essence of sustainable health.
