In "The Genetic and the Operative Evidence Relating to Secondary Sexual Characters," Thomas Hunt Morgan explores the intricate relationship between genetic factors and the manifestation of secondary sexual traits in various species. Utilizing a meticulous blend of experimental data and field observations, Morgan elucidates the principles of inheritance while examining the evolutionary significance of these characteristics. The book is acclaimed for its precise organization and rigorous scientific methodology, situating it firmly within the context of early 20th-century genetics and evolutionary biology, just before the modern synthesis was fully articulated. A Cultural History of Heredity【電子書籍】[ Staffan M?ller-Wille ]

“Thought-provoking…any scientist interested in genetics will find this an enlightening look at the history of this field.”ーQuarterly Review of Biology

It was only around 1800 that heredity began to enter debates among physicians, breeders, and naturalists. Soon thereafter, it evolved into one of the most fundamental concepts of biology.

Here, Staffan Muller-Wille and Hans-Jorg Rheinberger offer a succinct cultural history of the scientific concept of heredity. They outline the dramatic changes the idea has undergone since the early modern period and describe the political and technological developments that brought about these changes. They begin with an account of premodern theories of generation, showing that these were concerned with the procreation of individuals rather than with hereditary transmission, and reveal that when hereditarian thinking first emerged, it did so in a variety of cultural domains, such as politics and law, medicine, natural history, breeding, and anthropology.

The authors then track theories of heredity from the late nineteenth centuryーwhen leading biologists considered it in light of growing societal concerns with race and eugenicsーthrough the rise of classical and molecular genetics in the twentieth century, to today, as researchers apply sophisticated information technologies to understand heredity. What we come to see from this exquisite history is why it took such a long time for heredity to become a prominent concept in the life sciences, and why it gained such overwhelming importance in those sciences and the broader culture over the last two centuries.

The Evil That Men Do: 'No one would question the fact of heredity''【電子書籍】[ M P Shiel ]

Matthew Phipps Shiell was born in Montserrat in the West Indies on the 21st July 1865 and was believed to be illegitimate.

He was educated at Harrison College, Barbados before moving to Englsand in 1885 to work as a teacher and translator. He soon began to write and published a series of short stories in The Strand magazine and other periodicals. Some of his works were as a writer for hire and it seems probable that even his first novel ‘The Rajah's Sapphire’ (1896) was one of these.

Perhaps his best-known work was ‘The Purple Cloud’ (1901) and it is still considered an important early work of British science fiction.

His first marriage to the Parisian-Spaniard, Carolina Garcia Gomez in 1898 provided him a muse for a character in ‘Cold Steel’ (1900) and several short stories. They separated around 1903 and his daughter was taken to Spain after Lina died the following year. Money seemed to be at the heart of the marriage’s problems.

Shiel, like many writers wanted to write literature but his finances needed more commercial fare. With his more artistic efforts failing to provide he collaborated with Louis Tracy on a series of romantic mystery novels.

In 1902, Shiel published in book form ‘The Weird o'It’ which he described as a "true Bible or Holy Book" for modern times and its attempt to present "Christianity in a radical way."

Soon after Shiel turned his pen to contemporary themes with an historical novel about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904?1905. But he faced declining sales and tried to boost them by returning to a previous success ‘The Yellow Danger’. These efforts failed to capture any meaningful sales.

By 1914 Shiel was in prison for "indecently assaulting and carnally knowing" his 12-year-old de facto stepdaughter. He served sixteen months of hard labour.

Over the next decade Shiel wrote five plays, dabbled in radical politics and translated pamphlets for the Workers Socialist Federation. In 1919, he married Esther Lydia Jewson. The marriage lasted a decade but fell apart over his sexual interest in and possible abuse of his wife’s young female relatives.

Financially life was difficult, but he was helped in 1931 to obtain a Civil List pension despite his criminal record.

Shiel published 25 novels, several collections of short stories, essays poems and plays.

M P Sheil died on the 17th February 1947. Charles Darwin played a crucial part in turning heredity into a scientific question, and yet he failed spectacularly to answer it. The birth of genetics in the early 1900s seemed to do precisely that. Gradually, people translated their old notions about heredity into a language of genes. As the technology for studying genes became cheaper, millions of people ordered genetic tests to link themselves to missing parents, to distant ancestors, to ethnic identities...

But, Zimmer writes, “Each of us carries an amalgam of fragments of DNA, stitched together from some of our many ancestors. Each piece has its own ancestry, traveling a different path back through human history. A particular fragment may sometimes be cause for worry, but most of our DNA influences who we areーour appearance, our height, our penchantsーin inconceivably subtle ways.” Heredity isn’t just about genes that pass from parent to child. Heredity continues within our own bodies, as a single cell gives rise to trillions of cells that make up our bodies. We say we inherit genes from our ancestorsーusing a word that once referred to kingdoms and estatesーbut we inherit other things that matter as much or more to our lives, from microbes to technologies we use to make life more comfortable. We need a new definition of what heredity is and, through Carl Zimmer’s lucid exposition and storytelling, this resounding tour de force delivers it.

Weaving historical and current scientific research, his own experience with his two daughters, and the kind of original reporting expected of one of the world’s best science journalists, Zimmer ultimately unpacks urgent bioethical quandaries arising from new biomedical technologies, but also long-standing presumptions about who we really are and what we can pass on to future generations.

In the blink of an eye it was over, but the curse of the night sky remained. Without their mighty technology, they went on with the slaughter, bloody hand to bloody hand. Until the problem became too obvious to ignore. 9 out of every 10 were infertile, and the brilliant men of science had arrogantly failed the world again.

Populations collapsed.

500 years passed and the curse only grew worse. Those that survived in peace were simply too remote for those who lived by the ways of war to reach. A band of refugees hears rumors of a village with a young seer, a paradise of sorts. Heredity and Infection The History of Disease Transmission【電子書籍】

Ideas about the transmission of disease have long formed the core of modern biology and medicine. Heredity and Infection examines their development over the last century. Two scientific revolutions - the bacteriological revolution of the 1890s and the genetic revolution at the start of the twentieth century - acted as the catalysts of major change in our understanding of the causes of illness. As well as being great scientific achievements, these were social and political watersheds that reconfigured the medical and administrative means of intervention. By establishing a clear distinction between transmission by infection and genetic transmission, this shift was instrumental in separating hygiene from eugenism.
The authors argue that the popular perception of such a sharp divide stabilized only after 1945 when the use of antibiotics to end epidemics became commonplace. For health professionals the separation has never become an absolute one, and the book examines the various blends of heredity and infection that have preoccupied biology, medicine and the social sciences. Heredity and Infection recontructs the changing epidemiology of such historically important pathologies as tuberculosis , cancer and AIDS. In doing so, it demonstrates the role of experimental models, medical practices and cultural images in the making of contemporary biochemical knowledge.

Scientists probing the deep workings of organisms have discovered that all living things, from yeasts to worms to humans, are guided by similar genes and proteins, which have passed down nearly intact for hundreds of millions of years. At the most fundamental level, humans are genetically linked to every part of the natural world. The award-winning science writer Jennifer Ackerman brings these astonishing discoveries together for the first time, weaving a mesmerizing story of heredity that is only now being understood. Far more than a report from the field, CHANCE IN THE HOUSE OF FATE offers an encompassing vision of what these unities mean for our everyday lives. Ackerman's remarkable skills of description lend wonder and awe to the striking connections between our microcosmic makeup and the macrocosm of the visible world. Her voice is rich in imagery and poetry, vivid and deeply personal. Pregnant with her first child, she anxiously calculates the odds that her baby will inherit the gene that caused her younger sister's profound retardation. Illuminating the science of cell growth, she describes the heartbreaking cancer that claimed her mother's life. Carrying her daughter on her hip at the crack of dawn to observe the millennial orbit of a comet, she contemplates the universal circadian rhythms that measure the passing of time. "This is the alchemy of art with solid science -- the real thing," said Edward Hoagland in praising Jennifer Ackerman's NOTES FROM THE SHORE. Her new book is a magnificent addition to both science and literature.

Handbook Of Forensic Genetics: Biodiversity And Heredity In Civil And Criminal Investigation【電子書籍】[ Antonio Amorim ]

The use of genetics for the resolution of legal conflicts has recently been gaining a higher profile, largely as a result of scientific and technological advancements and the substantial broadening of applications. The theoretical framework underlying forensic genetics is the same irrespective of the materials and technology involved, however a great divide still exists in the manner and processes related to human and non-human analyses. This advanced handbook intends to overcome the historical barriers between the scientific fields of legal medicine, biodiversity and conservation, and food analysis by presenting a unifying, global perspective on the implications of genetic analyses on forensic affairs. This global perspective is presented in three parts: modes of inheritance and reproduction and taxonomic implications; current technological approaches and future perspectives; and a comprehensive systematization of the types of applications and organisms. Finally, a critical revision of the current investigative/expert systems and future perspectives is undertaken. This book provides a collection of international research, thereby constituting a reference platform for the forensic community and an advanced textbook for graduate students. It encompasses the theoretical bases of the field, and presents in the context of both perspectives of forensic action ー probative and investigative ー a comprehensive coverage of the current applications and technological state of the art.

Jukes-Edwards: A Study in Education and Heredity Unveiling the Legacy of Jukes-Edwards: Exploring the Genetic Influence on Education and Inheritance【電子書籍】[ Albert E. Winship ]

In "Jukes-Edwards: A Study in Education and Heredity," Albert E. Winship presents a groundbreaking exploration of the intricate interplay between nature and nurture, using the infamous Jukes family as a case study to discuss broader societal implications of heredity on social morality and educational outcomes. Written in the early 20th century, Winship employs a meticulous blend of statistical analysis, anecdotal evidence, and socio-political commentary to analyze the impact of familial legacies on individual potential. The narrative is compelling and methodologically rigorous, offering insights that resonate with contemporary discussions about the influence of genetic predisposition versus environmental factors in shaping human behavior and societal roles. Albert E. Winship was an esteemed educator and sociologist who contributed significantly to the understanding of social dynamics within educational contexts. His fascination with the nexus of heredity and education arose from his commitment to progressive educational reforms, wherein he sought to dismantle prevailing deterministic views. His observations were informed not only by his academic background but also his engagement with various social research and policy endeavors aimed at bettering educational practices among disadvantaged populations. This seminal work is highly recommended for scholars, educators, and policy-makers interested in the historical context of education and social science. Winship's incisive analysis remains remarkably relevant, providing profound insights into the continuing debates surrounding heredity, education, and social responsibility.

Extended Heredity A New Understanding of Inheritance and Evolution【電子書籍】[ Russell Bonduriansky ]

How genes are not the only basis of heredityーand what this means for evolution, human life, and disease

For much of the twentieth century it was assumed that genes alone mediate the transmission of biological information across generations and provide the raw material for natural selection. In Extended Heredity, leading evolutionary biologists Russell Bonduriansky and Troy Day challenge this premise. Drawing on the latest research, they demonstrate that what happens during our lifetimes--and even our grandparents' and great-grandparents' lifetimesーcan influence the features of our descendants. On the basis of these discoveries, Bonduriansky and Day develop an extended concept of heredity that upends ideas about how traits can and cannot be transmitted across generations.

By examining the history of the gene-centered view in modern biology and reassessing fundamental tenets of evolutionary theory, Bonduriansky and Day show that nongenetic inheritanceーinvolving epigenetic, environmental, behavioral, and cultural factorsーcould play an important role in evolution. The discovery of nongenetic inheritance therefore has major implications for key questions in evolutionary biology, as well as human health.

Extended Heredity reappraises long-held ideas and opens the door to a new understanding of inheritance and evolution.

Introduction to Genetics: Science of Heredity presents a linear programmed text about hereditary and genetics. This book discusses a variety of topics related to heredity and genetics, including chromosomes, genes, Mendelism, mitosis, and meiosis. Organized into six chapters, this book begins with an overview of some of the experiments that first provide an understanding of heredity and laid the foundation of the science of genetics. This text then provides detailed information about the cell and explains how the essential parts of it reproduce and divide. Other chapters consider how the chromosome theory can explain not only the facts of Mendelism, but also the many complications that arise in genetics. This book discusses as well the problems that can happen during the process of mitosis and meiosis. The final chapter deals with the practical problems that confront the plant breeder. This book is a valuable resource for teachers and students of biology.

Darwin and After Darwin: An Exposition of the Darwinian Theory and a Discussion of Post-Darwinian Questions of Heredity and Utility (Complete)【電子書籍】[ George John Romanes ]

Several years ago Lord Rosebery founded, in the University of Edinburgh, a lectureship on “The Philosophy of Natural History,” and I was invited by the Senatus to deliver the lectures. This invitation I accepted, and subsequently constituted the material of my lectures the foundation of another course, which was given in the Royal Institution, under the title “Before and after Darwin.” Here the course extended over three yearsーnamely from 1888 to 1890. The lectures for 1888 were devoted to the history of biology from the earliest recorded times till the publication of the “Origin of Species” in 1859; the lectures for 1889 dealt with the theory of organic evolution up to the date of Mr. Darwin’s death, in 1882; while those of the third year discussed the Further developments of this theory from that date till the close of the course in 1890. It is from these two coursesーwhich resembled each Other in comprising between thirty and forty lectures, but differed largely in Other respectsーthat the present treatise has grown. Seeing, however, that it has Grown much beyond the bulk of the original lectures, I have thought it desirable to publish the whole in the form of three separate works. Of these the firstーor that which deals with the purely historical side of biological scienceーmay be allowed to stand over for an indefinite time. The second is the one which is now brought out and which, as its sub-title signifies, is devoted to the general theory of organic evolution as this was left by the stupendous labours of darwin. as soon as the translations shall have been completed, the third portion will follow (probably in the autumn season), under the sub-title, “post-darwinian questions.” As the present volume is thus intended to be merely a systematic exposition of what may be termed the Darwinism of Darwin, and as on this account it is likely to prove of more service to general readers than to professed naturalists, I have been everywhere careful to avoid assuming even the most elementary knowledge of natural science on the part of those to whom the exposition is addressed. The case, however, will be different as regards the next volume, where I shall have to deal with the important questions touching Heredity, Utility, Isolation, &c., which have been raised since the death of Mr. Darwin, and which are now being debated with such salutary vehemence by the best naturalists of our time. My obligations to the Senatus of the University of Edinburgh, and to the Board of Management of the Royal Institution, have already been virtually expressed; but I should like to take this opportunity of also expressing my obligations to the students who attended the lectures in the University of Edinburgh. For alike in respect of their large numbers, their keen intelligence, and their generous sympathy, the members of that voluntary class yielded a degree of stimulating encouragement, without which the labour of preparing the original lectures could not have been attended with the interest and the satisfaction that I found in it. My thanks are also due to Mr. R. E. Holding for the painstaking manner in which he has assisted me in executing most of the original drawings with which this volume is illustrated; and likewise to Messrs. Macmillan and Co. for kindly allowing me to reprintーwithout special acknowledgment in every caseーcertain passages from an essay which they published for me many years ago, under the title “Scientific Evidences of Organic Evolution.” Lastly, I must mention that I am indebted to the same firm for permission to reproduce an excellent portrait of Mr. Darwin, which constitutes the frontispiece

Genetics in the Madhouse The Unknown History of Human Heredity【電子書籍】[ Theodore M. Porter ]

“Porter has unearthed a radically new history of human genetics, one that evokes not the double helix but the humble filing cabinet.” ーEmily M. Kern, Science

In the early 1800s, a century before there was any concept of the gene, physicians in insane asylums began to record causes of madness in their admission books. Almost from the beginning, they pointed to heredity as the most important of these causes. As doctors and state officials steadily lost faith in the capacity of asylum care to stem the terrible increase of insanity, they began emphasizing the need to curb the reproduction of the insane. They became obsessed with identifying weak or tainted families and anticipating the outcomes of their marriages. Genetics in the Madhouse is the untold story of how the collection and sorting of hereditary data in mental hospitals, schools for “feebleminded” children, and prisons gave rise to a new science of human heredity.

In this compelling book, Theodore Porter draws on untapped archival evidence from across Europe and North America to bring to light the hidden history behind modern genetics. He looks at the institutional use of pedigree charts, censuses of mental illness, medical-social surveys, and other data techniquesーinnovative quantitative practices that were worked out in the madhouse long before the manipulation of DNA became possible in the lab. Porter argues that asylum doctors developed many of the ideologies and methods of what would come to be known as eugenics, and deepens our appreciation of the moral issues at stake in data work conducted on the border of subjectivity and science.

Heredity under the Microscope Chromosomes and the Study of the Human Genome【電子書籍】[ Soraya de Chadarevian ]

By focusing on chromosomes, Heredity under the Microscope offers a new history of postwar human genetics. Today chromosomes are understood as macromolecular assemblies and are analyzed with a variety of molecular techniques. Yet for much of the twentieth century, researchers studied chromosomes by looking through a microscope. Unlike any other technique, chromosome analysis offered a direct glimpse of the complete human genome, opening up seemingly endless possibilities for observation and intervention. Critics, however, countered that visual evidence was not enough and pointed to the need to understand the molecular mechanisms.

Telling this history in full for the first time, Soraya de Chadarevian argues that the often bewildering variety of observations made under the microscope were central to the study of human genetics. Making space for microscope-based practices alongside molecular approaches, de Chadarevian analyzes the close connections between genetics and an array of scientific, medical, ethical, legal, and policy concerns in the atomic age. By exploring the visual evidence provided by chromosome research in the context of postwar biology and medicine, Heredity under the Microscope sheds new light on the cultural history of the human genome.
