Central to Carl Philipp Emanuel's output was the clavier, with the composer writing more than 50 concertos for this instrument - an astounding number considering how new a genre the keyboard concerto still was at the time, and a small number of which are detailed on this disc. While J.S. Bach is usually credited with elevating the harpsichord from it's traditional role to a solo concerto instrument, his harpsichord concertos are almost certainly arrangements of earlier compositions for oboe, violin etc., and Carl Philipp Emanuel's collection therefore stands as the first important one of it's kind. The works indeed number among the finest of their time, their quality reinforced by the fact that a good few were subject to regular revisions by the composer. Emanuel's own outstanding ability as a keyboard player is also reflected in the concertos, most of which were conceived with players of advanced technique in mind - the sparkling cascades of the soloist's arpeggios in the final movement of the E major Concerto Wq14 come especially to mind. Performing Wq3, Wq6 and Wq14 and bringing to the fore the infectious vitality of these works is Brilliant Classics regular Pieter-Jan Belder. For the theorist Mattheson, Krieger was likewise the pre-eminent exponent of complex counterpoint in his generation. Yet music-lovers have hitherto been able to sample Krieger's work only in excerpted compilations. The present album occupies a unique place in the catalogue as by far the most extensive recorded survey of Krieger, containing his two published collections of keyboard music. Album 1 is filled with the six harpsichord suites which were published in 1697 in Krieger's home town of Nurnberg, though by then the composer himself was employed as an organist in the Saxon town of Zittau: a post he filled for 54 years until his death. The Suites are themselves prefaced by an elaborate fantasia, and they contain the standard sequence of dance numbers - allemandes, courantes, sarabandes and gigues. Published two years later, the Anmuthige Clavier-Ubung was probably written earlier, and functions as a small library of preludes, ricercares, fugues, fantasias, toccatas and a chaconne, which are not grouped together by key. Both collections make clear that Krieger deserves to rank with Fischer, Kuhnau and Pachelbel as one of the outstanding German keyboard composers of the generation before Bach. Boccaccio has paid careful attention to the details of old fingering techniques; the resultant variety in phrasing and articulation gives new life to figurations that with a more modern legato approach can seem plain. Jones' first publication appeared in 1720, a solo cantata While in a Lovely Rurall Seat. In 1732 he was associated with the Drury Lane Theater Orchestra in London, succeeding Stefano Carbonelli as the orchestra's leader. He was a stage composer at a time when Georg Frideric Handel's music dominated the British stage, and much of his music, or what of it survives, shows clear Italianate influence. Like the details of his life, little of Jones's music survives. His pantomime stage works and ballad operas are all lost. His keyboard and violin suites however did survive and are noted for their wide, angular leaps and unconventional structure. The 6 Harpsichord Suites (or Lessons), possible inspired by the great keyboard suites by Handel, are of a very high quality, beautifully written, original and enormously appealing, with inventive handling of sweeping melodies, unexpected cadenzas and frequent changes of direction. They are also rich in harmony, with some bold inventions and plenty of vigorous rhythm that can be quite challenging from a technical point of view. In other words, they are compositions that on occasion rival those of Purcell and Handel. Now in newly released recordings made for Brilliant Classics in 2012-19, he presents the harpsichord music of Christoph Graupner (1683-1760). Hitherto known if at all as the most talented of Johann Kuhnau's pupils, who had been hired by the Town Council of Leipzig to replace his late teacher as Cantor in 1723 before withdrawing his application and remaining in post in Darmstadt - thus clearing the way for the post to be grudgingly offered to one Johann Sebastian Bach - Graupner was renowned in his day for his gifts as a harpsichordist, much as Bach was known for his prowess at the organ. He advanced technical innovations with his first published set of Partitas in 1718. Another set of suites followed in 1722, and in 1733 he began publication of a series of partitas called The Four Seasons, but either he never pursued the enterprise beyond 'Winter', or the others have been lost, like so much else of Graupner's music. However, he continued writing dance-themed partitas into the 1750s. The 'Monthly Keyboard Fruits' of 1722 are structured as a musical diary like Tchaikovsky's Seasons. A different dance suite describes each month, and Graupner allows himself some freedom with the Preludes which draw the curtain on the suites.
